    Yeah, I remember a explanation like this during a behind the scenes moment during the clones wars show. Which where Lucas said that the elimination of the sith brought balance. Basically he said that just using the dark side like the sith creates a cancer in the force which makes them enemies of life since their whole ideal is to gain more power no matter who or what gets in your way.

    There is a lot of people who really NEED to see this video. I'm tired to read people comments who claim to know about SW and be saying that Anakin brought balance to the force because after his decision= 2 jedi & 2 sith.
    Balance is not about equality, atleast not in this case.

    Disney is like the Dark Side corruption that came and bent Star Wars to its own will, while George Lucas' Star Wars was just like The Force: balanced.

      blue_pearl_22 If you are referring to balance, that comes straight from Lucas. The dark side is viewed as a corruption of the force. With Anakin kills Sidious and then Anakin dies the force goes back into balance (no more dark side users). Just like before Rey kills Palpatine, Anakin says to her “Restore the balance, Rey. As I did.”.

      Thor Skywalker If you ever get a job with Disney, I swear this to you here and now, I will FedEx Bullsith to you to keep on your desk and inspire you while you write...or corrupt you to the dark side...one of those two. Lol. But seriously, when you either get hired by Disney, or reach 250,000 subscribers...I want Bullsith chilling on your desk while you work!

      Thor Skywalker Have you ever heard the "Tragedy of Darth Bullsith the Wise?" Lol, no, for real though, have I ever told you the story behind Bullsith? Its ironic that I use him as a kind of a dark side alter ego, because his story is one of helping me conquer my dark side, so to speak.
      When I was in rehab, we had these small group (4-8 people) sessions with a counselor. Bullsith at the time was actually called Bullshit, and my counselor left him in the middle of the circle we sat in. His purpose, was to be a cut and cuddly way to call people in small group out on "their bullshit." If someone was sharing and one of us thought they were lying, being manipulative, exaggerating, or phony in any way, we were to pick up Bullshit, and toss him over to that person. That way, they had this soft, cute, cuddly stuff animal they could hold while enduring the imminent uncomfortable conversation...while they were being called out.
      About two weeks into treatment, I found myself struggling with my motives in seemingly benign situations. Addiction tends to go hand-in-hand with dishonesty, and for a time I found myself lying, being manipulative, making up stories...crap like that, seemingly for the sake of it. I didn't know why I was doing it, and I usually couldn't even tell I was doing it until I was either knee deep in it or someone called me out.
      I came up with an idea.
      I asked my counselor at the end of the next small group if I could barrow Bullshit until the next session (it was a Friday, so that would give me three days with him, until Monday). She looked kind of puzzled, but agreed.
      I had made an observation while lying about something shortly before that session...I tended to not look people in the eyes whenever I was lying, manipulating, misleading, or whenever my motives were poor in general. Whenever I would speak, or even just think that way, my eyes would wander.
      That entire weekend, I walked around with Bullshit on my shoulder. Why? Because anytime my eyes would wander, I would inevitably see his head in the corner of my eye, and it would alert me to something off with my thinking..."seeing my Bullshit" always would remind me to check my motives in that very moment.
      I continued to do this the entire three weeks I had left in treatment, and with great success, as I noticed myself seeing Bullshit's head less and less as time went on. Sometimes I would forget he was there until he fell off of me when I would lay down at night. Lol.
      When I graduated from treatment, I went to give Bullshit back, but my counselor refused to accept him back, saying that "he (was) my Bullshit now." Lol.
      He still serves his purpose. I keep him prominently displayed in my room in such a way that anytime I leave or enter my room, seeing him reminds me to check my thinking in that moment. As my google avatar, he reminds me to do the same online.
      BullSITH became a thing because of you and this channel. It started as a joke but has obviously become a running gag for us. The irony of it all though, is that while I joke that he is my fallen apprentice, consumed by the dark side, in real life, he really represents me having found a way to fight my own inner dark side.
      Now you know the true legend of Darth Bullsith the Wise.

    Your definition of balance is spot on! Im glad I am not the only one who thought the term was more of a reference to normalcy or restrained action as opposed to the dark side being the lack of restraint or "will over nature"!! this is great. I hope that "The Last Jedi" proves you right

  • @JustinFosterJustinchi

    Great and on-point explanation of SW force balance! Even in other Disney films, the goal is to destroy the villain(s) so I hope they don't do a 180 all-of-a-sudden and start introducing weird dualism into this film.
    I think that also explains Luke's response to Rey when she said, "the light, the darkness, balance..." and he says, "There's so much more." In other words, we have to look beyond our own concepts and see what's actually going on. The force actually has an answer. It has Awakened.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому +6

      Ilove the idea that Rey sees the Force in simple terms (light, dark, balance) and Luke is basically telling her no, there is so much more to the Force than just that.

  • @WhoWouldWantThisName
    @WhoWouldWantThisName 7 років тому +11

    Thank you for reminding me of this, or rather setting me straight. I, like most, have been caught up in the whole light vs. dark, the grey, the Bendu, Ahsoka, etc., etc.. I remember once seeing the way you described here then, I'm not sure what changed my perception. Maybe it was Anakin's journey, or Ahsoka's. It appears that the story group is going down this path of light plus dark = balance philosophy. I hope Kathleen Kennedy is watching :). I do have a suspicion however that the Bendu is not between the Jedi and the Sith but rather IS balanced and unbiased. Bendu serves the will of the force and possibly sees the Jedi as misguided hypocrites. If the Bendu sees the Jedi as merely believing they are doing the will of the force but truly serving their own, or some other parties, interests then I would understand it as seeing them as being almost the same. Beings trying to USE the force rather than follow it.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому

      Wow, I love what you have to say about the Bendu here and your idea of what he is and how he sees himself as the truly balanced one. Also, I myself talk about 'the gray' quite a bit because it does (for good or bad) seem to be a direction Disney is taking Star Wars in.

    • @WhoWouldWantThisName
      @WhoWouldWantThisName 7 років тому

      Thank you. I actually must confess that the grey idea appeals to me. I like the characters that don't quite commit to the Jedi way but won't be pulled or seduced so far to the dark that they align with the Sith either. They are just force users, good, bad, or otherwise. So I understand the temptation to follow that path with their portrayal of how the force works. I also believe though that it is imperative that they at least stay true to George Lucas' vision where the force is concerned. It is the very heart and soul of the entire thing. Of course we can still have those characters like Ahsoka and post Dooku Ventress that are either lost or just not going to be a munk in the order or apprentice for some Sith lord. I just hope that kind of middle ground isn't what they turn balance into.

      Luke Skywalker the 2nd Don't forget The Mortis Arc in The Clone Wars, it touched on this idea with The Father Son and Daughter. George was involved in making those episodes so I think taking things to a middle ground direction wouldn't really conflict with George's vision much

    Awesome video, sir! I would only add that the stability of balance can not be static, but must be dynamic. Just like riding a skateboard, the flexibility of the trucks, one's hips and knees, etc. are required to maintain balance in always changing terrains. We see this in Qui-Gon. And we see the lack of flexibility being a vital part of the reason the Jedi fall. Indeed, in spite of their issues, I'd argue the Obi-Wan and Yoda survive the purge due to being the most flexible of the Jedi, which may be way Yoda can hear Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan can confront and defeat Anakin.
    It's important to add here that, in spite of Palpatine's statements, the whole point of the Sith is to create and enforce stasis. Which is the meaning and purpose of the Empire. The Jedi, philosophically at least, understand peace to be a dynamic process, hence their support of democracy. The Sith want the peace of stasis, hence their fascism.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому +2

    thank the Force! honestly thought I was the only person with this kind of vision of the story/ the Force. little cocky I know... anyway totally agree with you that Anakin was the Chosen One, if nothing we've got bloody 6 films about it and I most honestly hope that Disney won't fuck up the whole concept in the upcoming movies. maybe (at this point) the strongest evidence of your point stated in the clip is the thing from the Last Jedi trailer where Luke tells Rey that there's something more than just light , dark and their balance. and personally I think that that "more" is the Force itself. I don't sympathise with the Jedi in the Revenge (the whole prequel era) at all. they really caused their tragic end by themselves by their overconfidence and very often narrow mindedness something that at the end happened to the Emperor himself. and on both that occasions we had a one particular person present and of course that was Anakin. so there's really no point of further discussion. so we have one (or two) chapters closed. the next movie will be a really braking point in the new saga and it'll show us where the story will make its next turn or where's Disney going with SW saga itself.

  • @ashleyjohansson230

    People keep getting this wrong about the star wars lore, no the balance to the force isn't literally a balance between dark and light, balance simply means that there isn't anyone abusing the force for power, causing the user to have powers like lightning and force choke. The balance to the force is just a jedi who isn't abusing the force for destruction.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  6 років тому +2

      I agree. Most people think of balance in Star Wars like a scale where you need equal parts dark to light. That's not how George Lucas ever saw it... though now I get the sense the sequel trilogy is making it out that way.

    I've always thought the same as described in this video. But, another interesting balance is this: When Obi-Wan and Yoda were alive so were Vader and Sidious. When Obi-Wan died Luke stepped into his role. When Yoda Died, Sidious died. Then Vader died and there was no yang to Luke's yin. Except maybe Snoke rising from out of nowhere. As Leia learned from Luke it would mean Ben Solo would turn to the dark side or she would. None of this takes into account Rebels of course, but it's an additional interesting balance of sort.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому +2

      You are right, it does look to be that balancing the Force is equal parts dark to light. And, within the movies, Lucas never really explains what he means by balance... so I certainly understand why this is something that so many people think to be the case.

And who knows like you said maybe Disney will change some aspects, like anakins lightsaber now Being Rey's, and maybe they'll change the prophecy in some ways. I know anakin is without a doubt the chosen one like Lucas has stated before the Disney purchase. there is change coming and I think it'll be something kinda core shaking. (Again amazing videos man)

    When I was thinking about this, I kept hearing the line -If you only knew the power of the Darkside. Have we really seen that power? I think Sidious showed Vader some things in the Darkside we can't grasp.In the movies both sides have their own special powers if you will, But I feel we didn't even scratch the surface of that darkside power.I think that Aftermath gave us a hint of yes the Darkside has so much more,on the flipside Luke discovers that there is so much more when it comes to force in general.So yes I think we are going to get a major update to the force. The Light,The dark, no, it's so much bigger!

    In Rebels Yoda does tell Ezra that the Jedi fighting in TCW was wrong and that by doing so they were using the dark side of the force themselves. If you think about it...All the lies and the stuff the Jedi hid from Anakin was part of Anakin starting to not trust the Jedi council. By doing this Anakin started to trust Palpatine more than he trusted the council and grew a closer bond with him. The council's behavior was part of Anakin's fall to the dark side. Had the council followed the true ways of the force it could be said that Anakin's path could have been different.

    Couple points to consider: First I thought the aspects of the The Force were based off Daoist/Taoist concepts of harmony (ying/yang) thus requiring equal parts light and dark. This balance is best highlighted in the Legends "Dawn of the Jedi" series where it talks about the physical representation of the dark and light sides of the force through two moons that orbit the central planet Tython. These moons are the Ashla (light) and Bogan (dark). The Bendu episode of rebels acknowledges Ashla and Bogan thus making it Canon now.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому +2

      You do make good points, but as I say in the video: This has always been how Lucas described balance. And that is by the absence of the dark side, not equal parts dark to light. Yes, the Bendu mentions the Ahsla and Bogan in Rebels, but as I say in the video we are now in a post George Lucas era, so it could be that many of the ideas brought forth in what is now called Legends will be brought into the new canon... and less of what George Lucas' original vision was.

      jamesqgrossman you're forgetting that in East Asian cosmologies demons come into being because of an imbalance between yin/yang. Hence, "evil," as such, is imbalance not yin or yang. This is shown in the Mortis arc in CW when the Father refers to the Son as falling to the Darkside. The Son creates imbalance by pushing for domination by the entropic, yin aspect of things her represents over the balance represented by Father, thus harming the extropic, yang aspect of things represented by the Sister.

    a couple questions:
    how do The Ones and the Son work if this is the case? also, if your definition of balance is achieved, does that achieve pure morality throughout the galaxy? or is morality another scale detached from the Force? nobody acts immorally or selfishly or malevolently when the force is in balance? i'm just trying to understand how all-encompassing the Force is in the SW universe.
    because to me it seems more like the Dark Side is in literally everyone naturally and to balance the Force is not a 50/50 thing like some people have come to assume, but is more like a 95/5 thing that requires some small level of acceptance and absolute dominion/control over the dark self (or what we would call the Shadow in the real world). but i guess that's a more personal level than the Whole that the Chosen One is working to balance?

    It makes sense, especially when looking at George's original vision, but when compared to real life it's much more complexed.
    Looking at Daoism, the inspiration for the Force, yin and yang are codependent. Hot and cold, dark and light, active and inactive, hard and soft, ...
    Neither is necessarily good or bad, just opposite, different, yet both would be useless without the other. A refrigerator can only cool down your food because it first creates a great heat that is compressed and funneled through a long tube that rapidly cools the air. An AC unit fires cool air into a room, but at the same time expels hot air outside, and foes the opposite in the winter.
    A personal experience, I was in the military for a few years, came across all kinds of violence. It was unnerving at first, but I became so desensitized to it that I could calmly sit in a chair and watch a bar fight going on in front of me, without my heart rate going up.
    After I got out, I went to a wonderful meditation retreat for a few weeks, did nothing but be mellow. It was wonderful, I didn't feel an ounce of anger or negative emotions in me. I gave off such chill vibes that random people would come up to me and hug me.
    A couple months later, a friend asked me to bounce at his bar for a special event. Everything was super chill, until a fight broke out and I was paralyzed with fear and didn't respond how I should have right away. The problem with not feeling the dark emotions was when I needed to, when they came rushing back, it was overwhelming. All my martial arts training went out the window.
    Going to either side too much is bad, I try and keep a balance.
    What do you think?

  • @DarkLordArmanus
    @DarkLordArmanus 5 років тому

    The huge flaw in this is if balance is people bending it to their own will instead of following its will is there will always be a virtual entropy back to imbalance. The force grants power and as long as it does there will be those who will use it for selfish motives, and we’ve seen that it doesn’t take many beings to cause this.
    It’s just going to be an endless cycle, and as we see in the prequels the jedi are hardly a solution since they contributed to the imbalance, and I think that’s inevitable. There’s truth to what Palpatine says to the effect of those who attain power seek to keep, maintain and even expand it, including the jedi. As long as the force grants power the jedi will eventually become an institution of power and also inevitably succumb to making their own power and influence the most urgent priority. They would feel it necessary to be effective defenders of peace and justice in the galaxy.
    That requires power. Might. Immovable.
    This leads to question: if the force is always seeking balance then isn’t the best way to achieve and maintain this simply to eliminate the means of imbalance (granting power through the force)? If you think about it, the force should not need to have others actively follow its will. It is the force, after all. If no one can use the force to mess up anything then the force does as it will. It can influence all beings covertly and achieve what it desires. The idea that the force grants power then requires active pursuance of its will when we know it will inevitably fail is insanely counterproductive and illogical.
    That’s why I think where Disney seems to be taking it makes more sense. The force isn’t some distant intelligence. It is nature, reactive to its status. It has creative and destructive aspects that will always balance out if allowed to do so naturally. Balance is neither aspect in dominion or overwhelming the other. The force cannot grant or take power of its own accord since force sensitivity would presumably be an evolutionary development.

    Hey Thor, I think the elusive thing that Obi-Wan felt was their impending encounter with DARTH BINKS! Lol.
    Anyways, another good video my friend. How are you? What do you make of Disney's announcement to pull its content (minus live action Marvel series) from Netflix and start its own streaming service in a couple of years? I was kind of shocked when mere days after you posted that video, complete with Netflix logo, that Disney announced it was severing ties with Netflix.
    Do you think it decreases the chances of a KOTOR or Rule of Two type series, or increase it? I think it will delay how soon we might get one, but increases the chances overall, as Disney will need content to fill out its streaming service and will obviously need to target more than the 12 and under demographic to compete with Netflix and Amazon.

      Anyway, I'm doing pretty good after a couple hectic days of work and life in general. But I am moving down to part time so I will have more time for videos and talking some Star Wars.
      As for the Netflix thing, I swear they waited for me to put that video up about it to make the announcement. And I'd say a Star Wars show is still inevitable... but I don't know how 'adult' oriented it will be. Though you are right, a Star Wars cartoon or show for kids will not bring in the subscriptions like a show for older audiences will... so maybe this does actually up the chances for it?
      Either way I think this just makes it feel more inevitable than ever. I mean if they truly want to sell this thing to people, you tell them Star Wars is coming to it and it'll take care of itself.

      Thor Skywalker What you just said there...that is why I am proud to be a part of this. As you've heard me say countless times: I love your content, that you engage with your subscribers, and the community that has formed around it.
      With that said, eight months ago this channel had 700 subscribers, and you had, from what I can gather by your posting dates, long periods where you had stepped away from doing this. Then you put that "Last Rey Theory You Will Ever Need To Hear," video up. That also happened to be the first video of yours that I watched, and when I left a comment (it was the first comment I had ever left on a UA-cam video by the way), I was nothing short of shocked that I got a quick reply back. Shortly after, I noticed you had replied to all the comments. From when you put that video up and I joined what is now a select group of people who can claim to be pre-1K subscribers, you have rocketed forward and not looked back. I remember congratulating you on 1,000 subs.
      Back then, we had a lot of conversations, ranging from goofy comments with tongue-in-cheek uses of dialogue slipped in, to back and forth discussions about the philosophy behind Star Wars and its characters, and even a select few personal discussions, such as when I discussed my being an addict in recovery when I likened Kylo Ren to being an addict, and the dark side like a drug.
      Now, here we are, eight months later, and you're not far from 20,000 subs, one of the most common comments I see from people is that you're "the best Star Wars channel on UA-cam," which is true by the way, though I know you're too humble to acknowledge that.
      You are not just putting out observational or theory based content, but have written original stories that have been extraordinary and compelling. This channel is truly unique and something special to be a part of. I am grateful that I have been a part of it.
      If I'm being honest though, that stuff, while all amazing, is not what is making me proud right now. What you just said...that you have reduced your job hours to pursue your dreams...that brought tears to my eyes, my friend. I have had a front row seat to watch someone I call a friend, go from saying things like, "I don't know, I've never tried that, but I'll give it a shot," to, "F*** it, I'm going to pursue my dreams!" Wow. If I were just a fly on the wall that would be moving, but at the risk of sounding prideful, I know you have pushed yourself at times because we're friends...because of conversations we have had. In Narcotics Anonymous, we have a saying, "we only keep what we have by giving it away." Its basically a cliché to remind us that we can only help ourselves by helping others.
      I claim zero credit for the content you have produced, the following you have amassed, and the talent you are gifted with. What I do know is that numerous times you have told me that you tried something new because I suggested it...that I have encouraged you...that, after your fiancée, you considered me your greatest source of support in this endeavor.
      I say none of that in hopes of any accolades. I just want you to know how truly meaningful it is for me to know that I had any kind of a role in helping a friend realize and pursue their dream, because helping others is my dream. I am extremely proud of everything you have accomplished, but I am most proud of your decision to take such a big step towards making your passion your "real" job.

    Loved this one, you're content is always top-notch. I may be a little off-topic, but from your point of view, does the light side temptation experienced by kylo make sense? I mean, it is a nice variation on the theme and at a surface level it is ok (like the gray jedi concept)... but if you look closer the idea of temptation should be linked to the dark and only the dark, at least in my opinion. When in SW a character goes back to the light is not because he's tempted by it, but because of a redemption. It may seem the same (in fact, I could be wrong and may be just a metter of definitions), but I think there's a slight difference: if you remove the tempting element, Kylo looses all his originality as a character, since Anakin/Vader has been there before...

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому +1

      You're right, Kylo being tempted by the light side is very strange and doesn't really make sense. I can only imagine it is more or less Kylo's way of saying he misses his family (mother?) and wants to go back to the way things were before he turned to the dark side. In other words, it was just his way of expressing to his grandfather that he's not sure the dark side is the right path for him.

      I'm not saying the Force is a tool persay just.. it simply "is" a part of the Galaxy.
      When they introduced the Father, Brother, Sister and Abbaloth. I loved the concept of the Force basically taking forms, each an aspect of itself. But still a "family" and single thing with many arms.. heh literally after Abbs went off her Rocker.
      I fear if they go into to it too much, the Force will become more of a god like being that moves the galaxy, I really hope they don't do that. Very good video! I think Disney keeping the EU, but relabeling it as "Legends", is a hint that they'll try and keep some aspects, perhaps the foundation, of what Star Wars and the Force itself is true to what George Lucas envisioned while introducing and expanding on that. That's why the line "I know one truth...the Jedi must end" doesn't mean anymore Jedi, but just an official death to the Prequel era mindset that cost the Jedi, and galaxy, so much.
    It will be interesting to see just how Disney and Lucasfilm will expand upon this.

    I feel like this goes against a lot of things we've been learning recently in the new canon. During the Yoda arc at the end of the Clone Wars, Yoda learns the dark side is a part of everyone and that denying it and rejecting it only makes it stronger. There really is no way to get rid of the dark side in the universe because it is simply a part of the force, and the force is everything. It seems as thought that when one accepts and follows the totality of the force, not just adhering to one component or side, then balance is achieved and the will of the force is more clear. In The Last Jedi trailer, Luke mentions the light, the dark, and then the balance which is so much bigger. Why would he say this if the balance was just the light side? When I say the light side and the dark side, I'm not immediately associating them with the Jedi and the Sith. The Jedi of the Clone Wars and the Sith both caused imbalance by not listening to the will of the force and adhering to one side. A true Jedi would accept and follow the force as a whole, in totality, in order to truly understand it. The light and the dark are not inherently good or evil, but the Jedi and Sith can be good or evil. Let me know what you think about this Thor.

    I like to think that the prophecy includes both Anakin and his descendants as balancers of the force. If you think about it, Anakin would have never turned back to the light and killed Sidious had it not been for Luke, his son. Perhaps Luke, Leia, and Ben won't be able to fulfill their destinies without each other (and maybe Rey as well)? Maybe the Skywalkers will have to deal with a powerful darkside user during each successive generation until the corruption is destroyed forever? I kinda like that idea ;D (could also explain the confusion with Anakin/Luke being the chosen one).

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому +4

      That is a pretty good theory: that each generation of Skywalkers have their own evil to overcome to keep the Force balanced (or to rebalance it). They will have to do something to explain where Snoke came from and how the Force was 'balanced' with him somewhere in the shadows.

      I feel like that would be a great way for Disney to be able to keep making saga films. That the Skywalkers are a sort of peacekeepers or as you put it, balancers of the Force. That the Force will always at some point be out of balance, and the Skywalker family is there to allow for the Force to course correct itself.

  • @masher1965
    @masher1965 7 років тому

    I really like the explanation of balance in the Force, great job!! So, I've been thinking on how will Disney and Lucas Film handle Snoke while keeping Anakin and the ROTJ intact with canon? If they aren't careful, Anakin will be unable to be the Chosen One, and that will cause a huge uproar they really don't want.
    They could try and go the dumb way and imply the prophecy is not for a singular Chosen One , but for as many as needed throughout history. I really hope not, there are simply too many snares and traps for that. They could also make the prophecy mean Chosen One pertaining to a family, (aka Skywalker family) but again, that has a lot of backlash and pitfalls to it.
    I think your idea that Snoke is a physical embodiment of the corruption of the force itself will keep things intact. If Snoke was at one time someone who dabbled in the Dark side and then then Dark Side used him, corrupted him, like a parasitic or evil symbiotic relationship at first to only become the embodiment of the Dark Force, I think it works.

  • @vanquish5023
    @vanquish5023 7 років тому

    I believe the Force is constantly trying to come back into balance. When the Jedi (as in the prequels) are using the Force for their own will (whether that be good or not) the Force allows for the dark side to gain strength so that it can go back to being in balance. Now, the same is true of the other side. During the Galactic Civil War, the dark side was much stronger, so the force overcorrected this by Luke. The Force wants to be in balance. I like your description of what balance is but I think that when the Force is not being followed, then it will allow the dark side to gain strength to hopefully return back to balance.

    I honestly don't think this is some deliberate subversion of the Force on the part of Disney, I think that the people in charge at Lucasfilm just don't understand Star Wars or it's lore. To me, if it's true, that's much worse. If it was a deliberate attempt to change the way things work then they could course correct, if it's because they just don't understand it then there's no hope unless they bring someone in to explain it to them. Maybe I'm wrong, I haven't seen The Last Jedi, not after the Force Awakens, once bitten, twice shy. For me the film saga ended with RotJ then moved on to the Thrawn Trilogy.

One cannot exist without the other. Which is not a new idea. Though my personal belief is that darkness is merely the absence of light

    Anyway, if Anakin destroyed the Sith and the dark side and brought balance to the Force, why have the Sith and the dark side existed long after Anakin's death? The original prophesy simply stated that a chosen one would bring balance to the Force. The line "destroy the Sith" was added much later, and it reveals the Jedi to be arrogant and be self-serving, to assume cosmic balance means a status quo where you effectively rule the galaxy. Even Yoda thinks the prophesy may have been misread.

      Bogdan Cvetkovic No the Entire prophecy was correct, the jedi weren't wrong or incorrect. Lucas said himself that the Anakin will bring balance BY DESTROYING THE SITH. There is no misconception other than you grey idiot fanboy

    After watching your video, I feel as though the title "The Last Jedi", and the comment "it's time for the Jedi to ens" is saying, that the ways of the Jedi of the Republic must end. Rather the Jedi should be the followers and welders of the force being in tune with it, instead of using it to fight for the Republic and it's gain. I think this is why "grey Jedi" or the Bendu are being pushed because they are truly following the will of the force as the Jedi were originally intended

      You could be on to something there. Perhaps Luke implies the way the prequel era Jedi did things must end... and they must return to true servants of the Force.

    We're definitely going to learn more about the Force. About the proper way to tap into it. And that way will be, as you've said, different from the Jedi of the prequels and sith in general.
    The will of the force is something I've thought a lot about. Personally, I believe only Jedi who have surrendered themselves to the will of the Force can become Force Ghosts. Kenobi and Yoda are two such examples. Consider their abuse of the Force in the prequels. Opening doors with it, augmenting their strength and acrobatics, mind tricking strangers that really meant no harm. Now consider their use of the force in original trilogy -- very sparring use of the Force. I mean, Yoda was already several hundred years old in RotS, yet he was the most acrobatic. Then in RotJ he hobbles around, old and frail -- but it's only been 19 years!He already was old. What happened? He stopped abusing the Force.
    So my Theory is -- Link is conflicted about abusing the Force to stop Snoke because the will of the Force is not to kill Snoke. Why that is must have to do with Snoke being something other than Sith. An ancient Jedi, following the will of the Force?... So does that mean a change this new trilogy will make to the Force is that it can condone the darkness if its will is still carried out? We'll see...

      Again, great insights... and I think you're on to something about Yoda abusing the Force (and perhaps Obi-Wan as well) and that when they went into exile they reexamined their ways and realized they had not been following the Will of the Force. And part of the 'training' Qui-Gon had for them was to fully align themselves with that Will.
      I also think it would be very interesting if Luke is conflicted because the Will of the Force (for some reason) isn't to kill Snoke....

      Thor Skywalker, or that the end of his Jedi order had been the Will of the Force...and now he knows that the Jedi must end...

    This really is a great video on food for thought though, I do have some disagreements. I see where you bring up how balance is things going smoothly, not really swimming up stream - though how balance works is that the choas dosen't affect harmony. The idea of balance is to be level with the situation at hand, the force isn't a scale just as you said though the problem comes up that training with/using the force is a bend on the will of the force - to have any knowledge of the force creates a corruption to the force. Wouldn't it make more sense that the force is more like destiny, regardless of how we interact with it, the force has already "seen" it happen and is allowing the situation to happen? It is reaching a balance by stopping the schools that split the will of the force in the first place, at least in my opinion. Again really awesome video you brought up something I never even knew was a possible discussion or theory - thanks and, keep it up!

      I think I get what you're saying here, that everything is predetermined by the Force no matter what we do... and I think you're right, in a sense. But I think that wielding the dark side, or having knowledge and access to the Force (if you will) and using it for your own will alters what the Force had planed. Which kinda relates back to what Yoda said in ESB: "Always in motion the future is." In other words, he could see what was 'supposed' to happen according to the will of the Force. But all too often something happens that goes against the will of the Force to change that outcome.

      Thor Skywalker Thanks for the reply! You know thats an incredible point on the dark side essentially throwing the force off course, as well point on Yoda was super on point - though can't I spin it in that the force is stopping Yoda (and other jedi) from seeing the true future because it's corrupting the will of the force by trying to see into its plans?:)

      Luke: "You mean the Force controls your actions?"
      Obi-Wan: "Partially. But it also obeys your commands."
      This would seem to indicate that someone following the Will of the Force can be / is creatively involved in the process of fulfilling the Will. That creativity and free-will within a given, determined context is an aspect of the Will. Without this, there could be no moral agency or Darkside. The Force is not domineering. In terms used by Process thinkers like Whitehead or Catherine Keller, the Force provides a "lure" toward the best possible thing to do situationally and in general, and it is up to people to listen to and creatively follow this lure. Germane to this discussion, this is how the concept of "ming" (which roughly translates as "mandate" or "destiny," but is understood to be non-binding, non-deterministic) is understood within East Asian cosmologies, particularly within Neoconfucianism and post-Neoconfucian Daoist and Buddhist thinking.

      @FacelessonaThrone 7 років тому

      Jeff Miller good points on the quotes and following subject matter, you kinda lost me towards the end but, I see you're bringing the east thought process of ming, though ming isnt a western destiny like how the catholic god says how things will and, will not happen. Ming is a "flowing" destiny where you can walk several different paths but you will always go to where you were suppossed too. Like anakin could be a great jedi but he still would have cause the jedi downfall and rise to the sith it just didnt have to happen as in RotS; also one point on the Confucious/Toaism/Buddhist side remember george lucas based the jedi off the samurai, toaist/buddhists, just keep that in mind.

    • @jeffmiller6025
      @jeffmiller6025 7 років тому

      Nick Schlacter The way I understand Ming is that it is not the case that you will go where you were supposed to go. In Neoconfucianism for certain, as well as Buddhism generally and post-Neoconfucian Daoism, ming is what you are supposed to do if you follow he "lure" of your ming (the "lure" in East Asian terms being the humanity/empathy of the Confucians, compassion of the Daoists, loving-kindness of the Buddhists and how this is always trying to draw one into balance that one may do the most good in the world and fulfill one's ming). However, you do not have to follow your ming; you can choose not to. And in East Asian theories of evil, particularly after the Song Dynasty, evil arises out of the imbalances caused by not following your ming.
      I do agree that there are many ways one can follow their ming, and indeed that it's that creative dynamism in how one goes about following one's ming that allows space for rectifying the wrongs of other who choose not to follow their ming. In terms of Anakin, I'd argue that he refused his ming when we fell to the Darkside. He could have brought balance by destroying the Sith and reforming the Jedi along the lines of what Yoda and Obi-Wan do under the guidance of Qui-Gon. The Jedi didn't have to be destroyed. Instead, he refused his ming until he heard the "lure" of it once again when Luke threw down his lightsaber and refused to join the Darkside.
