Not to end the sith, but to bring the force back into balance and rid of all of the Jedi and Sith, so that it could start anew, in balance. the jedi were not good, they were not light. They may have had the intention to use the light to help those who cannot help themselves, but they were not the jedi of old. they had become too involved in a political system controlled by the dark. there was no light or dark, just dark, no balance, no half and half, just 100% of one side. So, by ROTJ, the jedi and sith were dead...for awhile. Palpatine returning regardless of continuity (Legends or Disney Canon) doesn't undermine Anakin's sacrifice at all, because it was never to destroy the sith. It was to bring balance to the force, with the help of his son luke. That is why it is said a lot that Luke is the catalyst of Anakin's prophecy coming into fruition. Vader destroyed both the Jedi and Sith, so that neither one side controlled the other or the galaxy. it was balanced again.
I disagree with balance meaning Light and Dark in equal measure. The Light Side is the Will of the Force, while the Dark Side is the Force out of balance. So the death of the Sith would normally result in balance... if this were another era. However, as you put it, the Jedi in the Prequel Era no longer served the Will of the Force. They served the corrupt Senate and so lost their way. In that sense, they were no longer Light Siders, at least not the way they should be. So destroying the Jedi Order as it is in the Prequel Era does still contribute to balance in the Force. It allows the Jedi Order to be rebuilt again, the correct way this time.
I recently had this conversation with my friend who is a really huge star wars fan. I do believe that anakin did infact bring balance to the force just based off you looking how things were before he joined with Palpatin. The Jedi were basically all over the place even without the clone army. The light side was way too much in power. Thus here come anakin to push back the jedi to equal out the force since the dark side would of been nearly wiped out. But as we also saw in Luke era. The dark side had becoming the dominant force and Luke was the lights chosen one to bring it back into balance. Hench why in the comics luke is one of the very few characters that truly understands that you need both light and dark. And that both aren't mutually "good" and "Evil" forces.
The way of the Sith is that the Sith apprentice becomes a Sith Lord by betraying and killing their mentor thus taking an apprentice and so the cycle continues. Except for plot reasons when Anakin/Vader does it then it’s different. And the whole rule of 2 thing is also untrue.
I finf it intresting in that opening clip obiwan says anakin wknt let him down...he never has But in ROTJ he as no faith that anakkn is stil lin vader somewhere
