Tip #1 - Don’t look at the pictures, look at the ingredients
Many of the designs, pictures, and wording on the packaging of pet foods can be deceiving and sometimes misleading. Packaging is required to be truthful, but there is room for the rules to be bent. For example, the pictures on the package do not have to be in direct correlation with the food. The dog food could only have a single blueberry in it, but a picture of handfuls could be shown on the package. It is up to the manufacturer to accurately depict the contents of the package.
Tip #2 - Look for whole ingredients
This should go without saying, but the more whole ingredients the better. A dog food that has a diversified group of fruits, vegetables, meats, and grains is going to be better than a food consisting of mostly corn with nutrient and vitamin additives. Sweet potatoes, real chicken, beef, fish, peas, lentils, spinach, and other ‘normal’ sounding items should be as close to the top of the ingredient list as possible.
Tip #3 - Due your due diligence
Be weary of what you see on the internet and UA-cam. Not everything on the internet is factual and you should take everything you see with a grain of salt. Don’t forget to do your own research, and consider your own situation before blindly following whatever you hear.
Tip #4 - Check the FDA recall list
All recalls are posted on the FDA’s website. Although these recalls are voluntary, they can provide some indicators into the reliability of the manufacturer. If you consistently find recalls for a specific brand or line of food that may be an indicator to stay away.
Tip #5 - Not all grains are bad
There’s a ton of grain-free options out there, but is there any benefit? Some evidence suggests so, but not all grains are bad for dogs. Whole grains are a good source of complex carbs that help to keep your dog energized all day. Some allergy problems occur with corn because of storage or processing methods.
Tip #6 - Go the DIY route, or try a 50/50 blend
There’s only one way to be 100% sure you know what’s in your dog’s food and that’s by making it yourself. While homemade dog food is a little more time-intensive and can be more expensive, you will know with 100% certainty the ingredients. If you don’t have enough time, or find it too expensive you can make a smaller amount and mix it with regular food.
Tip #7 - Work with your vet
Your vet knows best and definitely knows more than I do. They’ll understand your dog’s needs on an individual basis and can give you the best advice.
Tip #8 - Remember food isn’t everything related to your dog’s health
Your dog’s food is important, but so is love, attention, socialization, and other things besides food. Be aware of known issues with your dog’s breed. Hip Dysplasia is a common issue with larger breed dogs such as Labradors and German Shepherds.

Ok.. you used my clip for showing the vinegar glasses. I totally agreed with everything you said. I do the test just to see how fast and how much gas is in the food. I have never said it is a perfect test and have never said you have to buy this. It is about starting a conversation about dog food. That is all

Gosh finally! Someone who spoke out against those dull vinegar tests! You’re correct. Dogs chew and have a lot of movement which those tests don’t dictate accurate results. Good content!

I thought avocados were bad for dogs that could kill them so I’m wondering why does the dog food contain avocado in the food? It makes me concerned.
