Very helpful... I was listening to people that said set an alarm for every 2 hours for the first several nights... 😒 ... Tomorrow I am bringing home an 8 week old pup -- my first dog in over 30 years. I'm binging on all your videos. 💞

Really appreciate your fun, but no-nonsense approach to the puppy's first night(s). "Don't wake the Momma!" YES!!

First night went as follows: Crated at 9:00; last potty at 11:30; she whimpered a couple times (crate elevated, by my bed). Slept till 5 am! Second night, last potty at 10 pm; whimpered at 2:00; really whining at 3:00 so I took her out; slept till 5:30 am. No cuddles or engagement other than getting her to and from her potty spot. She settled right back in to sleep when placed back in her crate. Thanks for the great pointers. Looking forward to extending her night-sleep to a solid 6 1/2 to 7 hours.

I've been watching your videos before getting my aussie puppy. The first night he's home, I used your "don't wake da mamma" method, and he started sleeping through the night the next day! (An 8 week old puppy) Now he is 3.5 months old, and everyone who met him complimented on how well behaved he was for a young puppy, thanks to all your training tips!

As always, a lot more beyond the topic gets delivered! “Forget it to get it”.... that’s a gem!

  • @annfry9072
    @annfry9072 3 роки тому +9

Gems: dogs are brilliant at figuring out patterns of reinforcement. Put the dog's meals in at different times so they can't figure out the thing before the thing. Forget it to get it * Very important gem. Don't wake the momma routine: 1. Exercise 2. Mental stimulation 3. pottying on a leash 4. Your responses. You do NOT say anything to the puppy if they've woken you up in the middle of the night, no reinforcement or engagement in any way other than to just go outside to do potty. Carry pup to place where they potty. Look for routines your dog can predict and try to break up those routines to prevent unwanted solicitation.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!
I'm 8 months pregnant and I was terrified I would have to get up throughout the night with our lab puppy.
One night of "don't wake the momma" and she sleeps like an angel.
This has given me a win that I keep thinking of anytime I'm overwhelmed by puppiness! (She's really good but I'm scared to "ruin her".)
Now we just need to get better at managing the day time.

Thank you so much for this video. Tried the don't wake mamma technique first night home with new pup, he woke 3 times and struggled to settle at 6am. Second night, only up once to toilet. I heard him stirring at 6.45 but he hadn't made a sound. Took him to toilet, straight back in where he is currently entertaining himself and quiet as a mouse! One very happy and well rested mamma here! 😊

Don't Wake the Momma is something I've always shaped for my dogs and cats. Just not responding at all works except when something is clearly needed. At the same time, I wake and am up instantly when I hear that cat "getting ready to throw up" sound. LOL.

We have a 2 year old dog that just loves to lick our face at 6 am (she sleeps through the night otherwise). She must really like bad breath because she won't do it after I've brush my teeth. 😷 Anyway, I showed this episode to my husband and he said "I see. It's not that our dog wants to wake us up early, it's that you are training her to." 😂 Seriously though, the "thing before the thing" made a lot of sense here for both of us and we've already started changing our morning routine and using "forget it to get it". Thanks as always!

We found this channel when our puppy was routinely waking us up at 4 am. “Don’t wake the momma” worked like a charm. 100% we gave her a pattern of reinforcement with feeding and playing when she woke us up. This content and channel is amazing! After watching these videos, we started crate games and given we enjoyed the content so much, joined Recallers this weekend. Thank you so much Susan!

Thanks for replying… he always goes out on a leash. I’m grumpy when I get woke up, so, no talking no praise, I can try more stimulation and exercise before bed, thing is sometimes it’s a big poo he does, and I definitely don’t want that in the house. Maybe I need to send him alone (fenced yard, when it’s dry, because he likes to frolic in mud puddles!)
He unfortunately is a Covid puppy so he’s never alone. And he has an attachment issue. And that’s something I need to work on in short intervals.

Susan you are a genius 🙌 I’ve been binging your videos to help with my now 17 week old border collie pup. Sleeping during the day doesn’t last long and he’s been waking me up earlier and earlier. I’ve just realised I’m probably reinforcing it because we have a big cuddle/affection session the second he gets out of his crate. That will be no more! Wish me luck 👌

What a difference just a tiny change in routine makes! My dogs start barking/whinging when my alarm goes off....the thing before the thing! This morning I ignored them when I came downstairs, made and ate my breakfast 1st instead of doing theirs. They were both like WTF??! but were calm and quiet for once and sat in their hot zones whilst I played collar grab and treat diving with the other one before they got the rest of their breakfast. Simples!

    Susan,
This has been amazing help, we have just got an 8 week old Lab pup and he mostly (woke up twice once to potty and once because my fingers had slipped out of the crate) slept sound through out his first night in the crate, the tip about leaving your fingers in the crate was amazing! The difference in his comfort with/ without fingers was like night and day.

I just used your method and it truly work! First couple night I keep on getting up to let him out to potty. Then, I tried not to interact and ignore him until he goes. The only thing is my puppy has a bell on his collar and every time he moves I tend to wake up as I’m a very light sleeper. I get up to check if he’s still sleeping. I put the crate In my room by the back door.

I wanted to say thanks for this, again! He has never woken me up unless he had to go out to poop, which has only happened a couple of times. I did set an alarm to take him out once in the middle of the night, but made it very un-exciting, not saying a word like you mentioned. He barely cried at all the first couple of nights, only a couple of minutes while he was falling asleep in beginning. Now he chooses to go in his crate half the time when he is ready for bed! Also, the breeder I got him from had played some white noise for the puppies when it was bed time, I also used the same white noise sound for him and I am guessing that helped too because it was something familiar. Now, we dont need that at all :) he is such a great pup!

My Vizsla puppy decided that it was time to whine between 3:30 and 5am. On Sunday. I take her out without a word and put her back. But that lasts about 30 minutes. I live in a condo so I can’t let her ‘cry it out’. I’m going to change what happens when she gets up so it’s not so much fun. Maybe that will help!

For the last 2 nights I have done "don't wake the momma". For the last 2 nights, my puppy has woken me 2-3 times in the night. I take up her water at 8:30pm. I take her outside, she does her business, and we come back in. At 10pm I take her outside again, put her in her bedtime crate and snuggle down into bed myself. The first night, she woke me at 3am and again at 5am. Last night, she woke me at 1:30am, 3:30am and 4:45am. I only know the times because I have a "Potty Training Tracker" that I fill out. Anyway, I have done everything you said for "don't wake the momma". I don't say a word to her. I don't praise her. I don't talk to her. I carry her outside, put her in the potty pen, watch her do her business, pick her back up and it's back to bed we go. I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong here but I'm so tired I can't figure it out. Is it because I'm putting her in the potty pen instead of using a leash. She's an 8 week old Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

Interesting! I had my first night with my new puppy last night and had seen alot of trainers that work with Malinois say not to have the crate in your room, so I put it in the kitchen. Maybe that was part of why he got so upset about being in the crate. I'll try it in my room tonight and see if he settles down better. Almost everything else you mentioned I did. I may have given him water too close to him going into the crate for sleep too because even though I only took him out to go to the bathroom once during the night, by morning when I got up he had to pee a ton even after he'd gone earlier and didn't make it before having an accident in the morning when taken out of his crate and set him on the floor for just a minute while I got ready. He doesn't always poop when I take him out on a leash but pees right away every time once I get him outside. He's good about that. He's a big boy so is soon going to be too heavy to carry but I did carry him when I took him out to pee during the night. His father weighs 87 Lbs. and he will probably end up at least that size if not bigger, as he has some big thick legs and paws. He's also got a good amount of length to him. Right now it's about like carrying a 2 or 3 year old child. I'm going to need to get him a larger crate soon. Will probably get one of those that's on wheels. That way I can wheel it out near the back door if I need to so that I won't have to have him walk to the door in the middle of the night.

My now 15 month old Mini Aussie was a breeze to potty train, slept through the night from his 2nd night home. Was reliable about letting me know it was time to go out after about 2 weeks of in home training. His new brother, an 11 week old Mini Aussie, however is a different story. He slept through the night his 2nd & 3rd nights home (YAY), and let me know when he needed to go outside when he was in his crate during the day (yay!). But on the 4th night, his crate was wet, and he did not let me know he needed out. After 2 nights of this, I took out his bedding…same thing, wet crate. No notification. He was also peeing in his crate during the day without notice. The during the day potty is now under control, I take him out frequently and he’ll usually go on command. Nighttime I’ve resorted to waking him up to take him outside. He goes on command & goes back to sleep. How do I get him to sleep through the night without pottying in his crate - and then laying in it! Thanks! Tamara …ps I’m a member of Recallers, HSTD & Wagnation, but haven’t seen this addressed in those forums.

Hi Susan, My pup is now 7 months old but constantly wakes me around 6am (when I would prefer to sleep until 7- 7.30) He was good at sleeping through the night after the the first week and I always used to get up as soon as he barked in the early morning as I assumed he needed to go potty. (Which was usually the case) but now he doesn't even go outside for at least an hour. So for the last month I have left him for 30 mins after his first bark before I get up.
When I do get up, I open his crate and give him a quick greeting (just a stroke), I open the door to the garden and then I go about making my breakfast. I don't play with him or feed him until I have finished. However he still barks when he wakes up. His room is dark and I also cover his crate with beach towels - mind you in Winter(I live in Australia) it is not even light at 6am. I would love another hour in bed now that it's getting colder! Any suggestions?
By the way a very big THANKS for your amazing podcasts. They are so different to all the others out there on dog training. I have recently joined Recallers too and would encourage all new puppy owners to do the same. The personal advice from your team is such a boon!

Hi Judy! Were you able to solve this issue? I am experiencing almost the same problem. My 6 month-old puppy starts barking at 5-5:30 am. I am sure he is not hungry and does not need to potty because he eats well and has his potty pan in his crate as he is potty pan trained. Sunrise here now is at 5:30am. He stays in a dark room. When he barks, I don't give him attention. I am really concerned that if this goes on, my neighbors will start complaining.

Hi Faye, I did get him to stop, and it was to do with the crate. First of all I had him in my bedroom for the night and was amazed at how fidgety he was. He was up half the night moving around although the crate was bigger than the recommended size for his breed. When I started thinking about it, I realised that he had always moved around a lot in the evenings too, from bed to bed, to lying on the floor or up on the sofa. I didn't want to let him roam free at night so I put two different beds in an ex pen. Problem solved!! I think even one bed and some floor space would also do the trick. It is a bit of a pain having to put the pen away during the day time but well worth it!

He slept until 7 the next day, I am wondering how long you advise leaving their crate on the night table, and do we want to eventually have them sleeping in another room, and do you advise always putting them in their crates at night or allow them to sleep in the room with you in their own bed?

She is 11 months old right now but still wakes me at 4, 5 or 6 am to go out. what do I do? I limit water at night, usually after dinner feeding and take out right before going to bed.

I have to laugh, when we start scrolling on the Ipad, the dog will jump up on our lap and put his paw on the Ipad.

I found this video super helpful but can this still work with my 11 week old golden retriever pup and I’ve been letting him sleep by me without a crate through the night.

Thank you! And yes, absolutely it can work! Just make sure they love their crate first ❤️

This was a very informative video, thanks! However we don't use crate for our 10 month old dog who we recently got from rescue. She tries to jum on the bed and wake me and my partner up at 4am and nothing stops her (otherwise she does not go or sleep on our bed, she has her bed next to ours). We tried "go to bed" and then "stay" commands (works only about 2 min and then goes again), tried ignoring her which does not work at all, tried petting and calming her down (which now I see could have reinforced that behavior more). Any suggestions how to fix this without crate? Thanks again!

My 5 month old Olde English Bulldog is STILL waking me up twice a night. I make sure it's not fun time. We get up, go pee, and go back to bed. That's it. But still. Every night. He's pawing the crate and waking me up.

Our 8 months old puppy brings toys to us when we are watching TV and relaxing but if we don’t react she gets very roudy and starts nipping our arms or ankles and gives a growl. Pls help us with that. Thank you!

Do you have tips for how to teach the dog not to start howling in the morning when you are up and getting dressed? We’ve tried ignoring her until she’s quiet, but nothing stops that first howl. When we do take her out, 9 times out of 10 she’s clearly not desperate and spends 5 - 10 minutes sniffing before she goes.

If I need to get up, not by whining, for me to go to the bathroom,, do I take them out to pee too? If they wake up or don't?

Hello, what if my puppy wakes up every morning at 6 am, making noises and waking up everybody in the building? Should I ignore him? I tried to but it's impossibile and I'm worried about my floor mates. Thanks

    • @DogsThat
      @DogsThat  2 роки тому

As I mention in the podcast I would get up, take him out on leash to potty, don't give him direct eye contact, do not talk to him and do not praise him then bring him back into the house and back into his crate and you go back to bed...even if it is your wake up time. Lay down for 5 more minutes. You want to work towards him not having any specific "triggers" that tell him "now we get up". Eventually he will stop waking you up because there is little reinforcement for him (unless he has to pee, in which case you should get up).

I did crate training when my dog was young. Once I can trust him not to wreck the house, he was never put into a crate again unless we’re flying. He’s very calm and obedient dog.

My dog Goes into the cage at night and then wakes up at 3:45 crying and barking, I'm guessing he needs the toilet, so he has peed in his cage a few times, I have tried a million things to stop him but to no availe, how do I stop the dog needing the toilet at 3:45??? Please help

You can’t. Eight week pups NEED TO PEE at night. It is not possible for a puppy to hold pee for 6-7 hours. Literally not possible. Just once a night is doable if you take water away 3-4 hours prior to bedtime.
