Muggs' sampling skills are craaaazy. I don't think, that everyone realizes, how hard it is to have the right ear to bring so many samples together to make a hit!!!
@@DJFurio Have you thought about doing a video on Beastie Boys Paul's boutique album? That blends so many samples too. I'm sure I read an article somewhere saying it holds the record for most samples used on an album.
The fact that Muggs is behind most of the production for Cypress Hill, House of Pain, Funkdoobies and Soul Assassins speaks volumes. This is a very strong resume without even pointing out GZA, MF DOOM.. the list goes on. Somehow Muggs always slips under the radar when people are talking about sample based producers, but the guy doesn't left a few well known beats behind him, he left a whole legacy. When you take into consideration all of this you suddenly realize how big of a producer DJ Muggs actually is.
@@jasonmurray4714 How Could I Just A Man & Hand On a Pump (you have to hear both as a unit!) are unique masterpieces, the apex in storytelling, painting an audio landscape in your head that is terrifying.
Holy crap I can't believe the plethora of samples Muggs used on "Insane in the Brain". Mind blowing. My favorite production of his is "How I Could Just Kill a Man". That is one of the hardest beats in history. Great sampling use as well. Furio God Bless you. RIP.
One of my biggest influences is Muggs. The elements of the samples he chose and the way they were flipped were always on point! Thanks for the trip back through his timeless creations
DJ Muggs is indeed one of my top 10 favorite hip hop producers! From the funky and groovy catchy sample laden first album production style, to switching to a more melodic-dark, but moody and sinister production style in CH’s later music makes DJ Muggs a one of a kind producer that helped shape and influence hardcore 90s Hip Hop. Nothing is like their first album but Cypress Hill’s Black Sunday and Temple of Boom…😮💨
Gary Burton - Las Vegas Tango (sampled in Illusions) Grover Washington Jr - Hydra (sampled in Stoned Raiders) Isaac Hayes - Walk on By (sampled in Whatta you know) Just a few of the crazy samples Muggs has used
Muggs produced a lot of my favourite music in the 90's but this video has just given me a whole new appreciation for his sample layering skills. I also saw Cypress Hill tour with Funkdoobiest, at the Barrowlands in Glasgow, but instead of House Of Pain they had Lords Of The Underground, fresh off releasing their first album. Great times!
Man to just imagine a show with Cypress Hill, Funkdoobiest, AND house of pain is nuts! I bet that show was awesome! Muggs is a monster when it comes to beats ive always loved his production! My older brother introduced me to cypress hill when I was younger and ive been a fan ever since!
Thanks again for you video I always loved the 90's rap , your video showed me and taught me how to educate my ears. You motived me to work hard on my MPC live. Thank you again bro'.
Thank you for the video. It is very enlightening and just shows you the genius of Larry Muggerud AKA’s Muggs. Just one correction, “How I Could Just Kill A Man” was not the 1st single from debut album, it was “The Phuncky Feel One”. Kill A Man was the B-side
Dope breakdown! The way Muggs can blend multiple songs into one track is amazing. You should do a video of The Beatnuts sometime. They definitely don't get enough props for creating some dope music.
Muggs is definitely one of my favorite hip-hop producers. Recently I rediscovered two albums from the first decade of the century, for which he provides the production - "Grandmasters" (2005) in collaboration with GZA, and "Legend of the mask and the assassin" (2007) - with Sick Jacken. These are not as popular as his work for Cypress Hill but for me are great examples of his abilities as producer and beatmaker and, in addition to that, there is also a solid lyrical contribution from the MC's. So I strongly recommend to give them an ear.
I enjoyed his production. I didn’t know he produced Xzibit’s Foundation in 1996. And when I hear How I Could Just… , I think of Tupac’s movie Juice as it was featured in the movie.
He contradicts himself a lot in interviews though. He says his memory is hazy due to how much he was smoking at the time. He’s previously said it was a guitar sample as well, which it definitely isn’t.
Thanks for watching. I got hit with a crazy copyright when I scratched some DOC vocals over one of my own beats, saying I had copied the melody from his music. Not sure I want to make a video about him with the copyright owner being so strict.
In the early '90s, after buying Cypress Hill's debut (and best) album, I think I brought anything with DJ Muggs name on it. House of Pain, Funkdoobiest.....anything that DJ Muggs did anything on!
Great video but it’s only about the 1/100 of Muggs crafty catalog. It would be super nice to see how his style changed through 30 + years. Amazing skills and dedication.
that funkdoobiest sample! sounds like muggs added some keys over it. oh, and muggs actually used the outro of billy joel's "everybody has a dream" for "the foundation". same album. same melody but a little different. thank you. great vid
At 1:59 appears a JR Walker sample. From the same album, "Shotgun", cames a sample composed of high pitched Sax and guitar from The song *"Do The Boomerang" for **#PublicEnemy** "Cold Lampin With Flavor"* , performed on a rhythmic repetitive way.
@@DJFurio it's no big deal but im not sure why he would say that if it was not true makes no sense. Also Divine style song came couple years earlier and was popular song as he was also from west cost.
