Cypress Hill: Tiny Desk Concert

The first thing I noticed as Cypress Hill strolled into NPR headquarters was Sen Dog cradling his signature bucket hat. I asked him if my assumptions were correct; it was indeed the original hat seen in all the videos from the early '90s. Before I could process that confirmation, B Real asked me, "Yo, is your greenroom a greenroom?" We got everything we expected and more from Cypress Hill at the Tiny Desk.
While the term "pioneer" is used loosely in pop culture today, few terms describe Cypress Hill's impact over the past three decades more adequately. They are the first Latino hip-hop group to achieve platinum and multi-platinum status. B Real, Sen and producer DJ Muggs crafted a sound in the '90s that stretched beyond regional boundaries. It was dark, psychedelic and at times directly addressed mental health before the topic was commonplace. Many dismissed the group as "stoner rappers," yet the members were fervent advocates for the legalization of weed long before it came to fruition.
Touring members Eric Bobo and DJ Lord joined the duo along with Money Mark from Beastie Boys fame. The band summoned a horn section to fill out this rare minimalist approach to five, funky Cypress Hill things. Between each song, B Real took his time to shed some historic light on the group's journey thus far.

We thank NPR and Tiny Desk Concerts for having us. This inspired us to do more musical pieces like this!! Much love to everyone here! And remember Cypress Hill forever 💯👊🏼
haha it's so cool to see this. grew up on your stuff in high school in russia! btw i've really like your metal stuff guys, that was fire🔥
Yea😊

This is banging!
You guys gave Life and Fire at the same time!!! Made my day, month, year!!! Love all you guys and the Horn section is straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Nobody has seen Sen Dog’s eyes in decades. The bucket hat is always working overtime.
The brocha as well😅
Yup
But he can see you, just like the sheep dog in looney tunes lol
It's gonna wind up in a museum someday.

B Real is one of the few artists where his actual rapping voice voice sounds EXACTY like the record. Sen Dog does too. Even 30 years later they sound so good.
Um...
no need for efx and autotune. just a dj, raps and a beat (with horns) the new bs nowadays sux big time
Soooo Gooooood
They bring so much energy just parked there on the stools.
Go take a look at the CH beginnings, the label wanted to kick B and only have Sen. B had to come up with his unique voice.
NPR Tiny Desk concerts are quite possibly one of the greatest things to ever happen to UA-cam and the internet in general. Bringing all these legendary artists together in an acoustic space is brilliant.

Tiny desk is on fire this summer!!!!
Fire 🔥
came here to say this

Oh my Lord. Tiny Desk needs to host their own block party at this rate
The Tiny Block Concert?
Yes, in DC at the National Mall. Would be 🔥🔥🔥
I need a trip to DC
A Tiny Block Party 🫨
Defo worth a travelling festival
Can we all recognize the fact that the one and only Money Mark is just chilling back there on the keys at like 63(?) years old jamming with Cypress Hill
Yo!! I was psyched to see him, was JUST coming to comment this you beat me to it by months! 🎉❤
Edit: HAD to add, you mean “Thrifty Mark”? 😎
Yeah I thought that was him. Nice!
Cool to see $Mark and Eric Bobo too!
B Real's voice is absolutely unique. I'd recognise it anywhere.
The sound of Cypress Hill ⭐️
B is 100% unique and flawless bi lingual bars.
Check out Psycho Realm. It’s his side project he did a while back.

Good idea

So f*cking true

Wow I'm loving this old school hip hop revival thats happening on tinydesk. Juvi, Cypress Hill, etc. Who's next? House of pain? Naughty by nature? The Fugees? Bring them all!
A performance of the fugees would probably break the Internet
Just waiting on Arrested Development to show up like "We still here y'all!"
Eric B and Rakim ❤
NBN would be crazy dope
Fugees 🔥
that’s exactly when you know you’re 43 when you listen to Cypress Hill in jazz version, in a private concert!
..on NPR
Yes! On NPR! 💯🤣💯 I found this series because of a scarface clip on tiktok and I love it for some reason!
@anthonycimino9941 that scarface TD concert was as good as any concert ever could be! These bands and engineers are elite.
Or 46...
Its like the simpsons tho when they ordered the orchestra
B-Real one of the greatest lyricists ever. Cypress still doing it as good as when they came out. Legends 🔥
I'm 40 and this was the stuff I grew up with .Thank You Cypress Hill
🤘

Same here. Born in 1983 and the first rap mixtape I got my hands on (at the age of 9) had Cypress Hill, Naughty by Nature, NWA, Slick Rick, LL Cool J and all the other Kings of the scene back then.
I listened to that tape over and over until it eventually disintegrated.
I'm 45 and remember buying this tape at tower records when it came out.
The drums and horn section make a live performance like this really come to life.
i saw them in denver with the colorado symphony. it was awesome.
and the dj
B Real's flow is so unique, unmistakable and clean. Up there with Snoop. Never biting anyone else's style, no effects needed. Respect!
maybe the best live hip hop drumming ive seen, really diligently sticking to the loops and not throwing in unnecessary fills, keeping that tension and staying clean and clear is one of the most underrated things about drumming for something like this.
Agreed. There's a powerful minimalism to his style.
It's almost as if he's a professional musician doing the job he's being paid to do 🤔
The hot rods are killing me though, takes all the punch out of the snare
His dad was a drummer/percussionist so it's in his blood.
That man was living in the pocket.
hip hop just sounds so much better with a live band , those jazz horn samples and the drum loops played live is just something so dope . Love this tiny desk
Agreed a hundred! Check out and search on YT some hip hop acoustic and acapela covers as well.
I wanna see lil pump with a live band
Agreed! Saw Jay-Z perform with a big band in Rotterdam 15 years ago, it blew my mind.
💯I had a wonderful idea probably 15 years ago. A year in Hip Hop "Music" theme. Get the big name artist to do a year of shows with live bands. Concerts, tv appearances, promos everything. Would've been nice.
agreed 100 % . Saw these guys in the mid ninetees in Europe , it was a fresh breeze of rap genius beats among all those alternative cross rock bands also playing at the time
Who ever came up with the tiny desk series is a genius. I love the diversity! It's cool to hear Cypress Hill is this form.
bob ross, and tiny desk, NPR should stop all other efforts, I'm cool with this use of taxpayers dollars.
Cool that Jay z played the drums..
I did that. Youre welcome.
Diversity = not white.just say it .
Hear, hear
❤ Anytime I hear Cypress Hill I'm "transported" back in junior high!!! Miss the 90's 😢
The horns are killing it! Fire!! 👍👍💥
B-Real's voice is as sharp as ever. Cuts through the mix so nice
He had some issues too. He said he got with a vocal coach to help with how to best use his vocal chords
Nice like ice! Keeeeeep Killing them noizys yo!
Also very well spoken as his storytelling is top notch!!
Saw them live a few years ago, and it's actually insane how clearly he annunciates the lyrics.
For a guy that smokes like he has for 35+ years, madness
These guys are absolute LEGENDS. There is no other group in hip hop anything like them. And they're still killing it after 20+ years in the game. Much respect to B Real, Sen Dog, Muggs and Bobo.
30+ yrs. 😉
they didn't disappoint!
WHERE WERE MUGGS AND BOBO??? THEY DIDNT
Thanks y’all 😖

Cypress Hill's appearance at the Tiny Desk was completely unexpected. Thank you. I send my maximum respect to the true musicians from Japan.🇯🇵
I saw them twice in concert in 2017 and 2019 and it was amazing both times. I knew from there that they were true artists, so it doesn't surprise me that much to see them here

This is what Rap music should be in the first place. This jazz mixture with real instruments is just fantastic.
Amazing! Love the great sounds they bring to my ears. It's a 420 for me.💚
This has made me appreciate these dudes so much more than in my youth. The added jazziness of this format really suits their style. Full album like this, please!❤
They could easily release this show as a live EP !
watch DJ Premier's episode if you like the horns in this one
Gotta agree with you, Lee. Although they always had some funky sounds going. Hope all's well with you there in CM ✌ MHS is treating me wel 😁
Their album Black Sunday was actually released 30 years ago today as well. Great to see Money Mark sitting in with the crew!

I love how back in the day, songs had a good story attached to them.
Thank you for this, Cypress Hill and NPR. Having the drums and horns there was fantastic! I was lucky enough to see Cypress Hill on their Black Sunday tour and it's one of my favorite concert memories.

I walked into a small record store in Aalborg, Denmark back in 1991 and had a listen to Cypress Hill for the first time and I was blown away.
Live Hip Hop doesn’t get much better than this right here. So much respect for these brilliant artists.
Another Tiny Desk concert homerun! I loved the live band and also hearing the insights between songs. Thank you Cypress Hill and NPR🔥
Totally agree
Cypress hill, спасибо, что вы есть! Вырос на вашей музыке. Красавцы!
I had this on cassette when It came out in 92 93 I believe... and it never gets old.

Fk they still got it man! Grew up on Cypress hill. Black Sunday and Temples of Boom two of my fav albums of all time!!!! Keep rocking lads 👊
I want to hug the person who came up with the idea of brass backing. Truly genius level for creating a fresh sound and accentuating what is legendary about these guys and how talented they are. Loved the humble and real commentary as well. It's gonna be hard to top this one.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
The Simpsons predicted this like 20+ years ago when they stole Peter Frampton's orchestra
Brilliant! 🤩
OK these horn players simulating samples is too much for my brain
It's such an easy way to bring intimate performances alive.
Clearly someone at Tiny Desk got a promotion within the past yr and they're showing out 👏🏽 👏🏽

I’m glad I witnessed Cypress Hill in my childhood. This is 🔥🔥😊
Sen Dog bring so much to the table as a hype man. His voice is instantly memorable
I miss his signature "holdin' it in" style tho
I’m transported back to the 90s every single time Sen Dog spits a lyric. His were my favorite lyrics to single along with. 🔥
One of the best of the west
Bought those first two Cypress Hill albums back in the early 90's. Always a fan of Sen Dog, he was perfect for CH, love what he brought to the table.
Watching this for the 10th time this week 😂 party 123 🎉
the memories came flooding back. First tape Cassette I ever bought was Cypress Hill... a lanky 13 year old from Hertfrodshire, England 🤣
Wow! I found it hard for Cypress to work on this format but wow, they did it awesome! Those horns sound incredible and smooth and the vocals blend together very well! Thumbs up!!
Love hearing rap with live instruments 🔥
Tiny Desk Concerts have had the best lineup of any festival this year and I don't even gotta leave my chair - thank you guys for not only continuing this awesome series, but pushing the boundaries and elevating the format. To me, these performances are incredibly important pieces of human history
