I wish I welded enough to get good at it. I probably wear out more grinders than any other welder on the planet 🤣! Fun/interesting video, brother! A+++++

I agree with the other comments. Good to see you back at it. Nice review of my video and thanks for the positive comments. Believe it or not, we actually already met. We met at the Good of The Land Fest in Temple TX. I met you, Scott (Essential Craftsman, Adam Booth (Abom79) and Jimmy Diresta. Wish they still had those shows. Maybe one day we'll meet again.

Isaac has a CNC arm. I've never seen anyone make such clean and straight cuts with a torch or air arc.

Best part of ICWeld, he's training the next generation. ICWeld often runs a Lincoln LN25 and flux core or dual shield

He was using a air arc to cut out the cracks

Nice to see you back on YT! My though in why he just welded the crack is that the customer is going to replace that section of boom completely so they told him just get it running until the new part comes in.

Man, I don't miss that heavy equipment repair / arc gouging. So much easier on hot rod stuff :D

I have an auto repair shop. I work on even newer cars. I live in rust belt. I weld on cars every day and never unook the battery. Im pretty certain that every "welding fried my brain box" video or story will begin with Improper grounding. I weld exhaust that rusts out. I grind a spot for the ground clamp. Got a ford with rusted exhaust manifold? Ground clamp goes right on the head. Not on the block or starter to ground through the head gasket. The stray voltag when the thing is hunting with 200a to find the path to ground is when the problem happens. Id argue if the battery "acts as a sponge" for the alternator it should do the same for a welder. If your using mig its not even 20v you would use so even on heavy equipment that is 24v your covered. If you operate any machine wrong enough you can turn it into a smoke machine.

Hey Sthephen, I like watching IC welding as well. He is a very good welder! Years ago I did a lot of repairs on heavy equipment like IC does. Back in my day all we had was stick welders so that’s what we used. Welding has come a long way since I was out there welding.

At 9:06 he's not welding, he's gouging out material. Different rod, burns the steel out. Has air running through the nozzle that blows out the waste.

At that timestamp he was welding. You can see the bead when he moves the camera in. Just prior to it was him gouging.

On big cracks like that--- if it's not too mangled up: I tend to beat everything back together, gouge it out, and weld several passes to fill it in; then I'll take another piece of scrap in a diamond shape and weld it across the crack. The heat from the weld can make the metal brittle.. just like heat treating a knife or something. Well, when you put another piece of scrap over it in a longated diamond shape-- it will spread that heat along the boom better and not give it one weak spot where your hardened crack is. It all depends on the customer at the end of the day; some guys want everything to look stock again, and I just make it clear-- That's gonna cost you a lot more. Vs a patch over; which is quick and dirty, but still ends up stronger than it was stock.. since it's reinforced with that extra patch. There's no right or wrong way to do any of this stuff. It's just a matter of balancing aesthetics vs function .. down time vs repair cost .. vs also what you have on the truck that day to "just get it done". A lot of customers don't want to wait on parts and materials and just want it up and running asap. So it's all a trade off and just depends on the customer.

Deja-vu… I’ve had to do these repairs. We used a mix of technique… Stick to get it together enough to bring it home to our shop, then a mix of stick and tig to finish out the repair and reinforcement. Digging in frost is hard on the gear when most of what you do is in ancient glacial lake bed. Not a lot of rocks ‘round my way.

From my experience from welding in the field to join the metal back together stick weld 6010 or how to the metal is which is what he's using in the video 6010 and he is stick welding at a vertical down position cuz you could do that with 6010 its a fast freezing rod and you want you to lay down your foundation of that kind and then switch to a 7818 or you can mig weld it the only problem with MIG welding with gas there can't be very much of a breeze or the weld will just come out like bird s*** that's why 90% of the time used flux core its just a matter of preference that's all everybody has their preference but yes this guy is very good at what he does I'll give him that

  • @mr.nobody68
    @mr.nobody68 5 місяців тому +1

I bet he's using Dual Shield and not MIG. It's Flux Core with gas.
I took welding all through High School and worked in a couple of structural steel fab shops, building columns and beams for skyscrapers. Those shops are 100% Dual Shield.
They'll use MIG for hand rails and inconsequential shit but anything that's holding the skyscraper off the ground is Dual Shield. It's every bit as strong as SMAW without the downtime changing rods and wasted rod ends.
I was told by a pipeliner that the only reason they use SMAW on oil pipe is because they're outdoors and the wind will just blow away Dual Shield gases.
Anyhow, I know enough to be dangerous, so if I had to hire out a weld, I'd be looking for a guy to fix it like he fixed the end of that bucket arm. And I would just pay to pull the damn boom off of there and fix the son of a bitch right.
You watch, it'll fail again, and the customer will pay more in the long run to fix it twice.
It's always cheaper to fix shit right the first time.

I'd think the uphill welds would keep the pool in the groove for a more dense weld instead of letting the pool pull your weld along - more metal means stronger metal, right? PS. Where's Chuck-E's new channel? I miss him.

9:06 yes, you really don't know why ppl choose rods over mig on open area... IF there is a wind Mig is useless..

Dude, he is welding 7018 "up hill" because that rod is for that, 6010 is fast freezing rod so you can both ways...
