Worked at Cat for 35 years ,, put on a few of those bails ,, and used to press the bearings in that hitch half you were leaning on .. oh the memories , lol...
People so often fail to appreciate the importance of a good stomach and its associated core strength; whether used for alignment, support, or extra ugga-duggas when forearms alone are insufficient, the belly is a lad’s best friend when sending it. Superb demonstration of the foregoing principle.
My compliments on such great work. You make it look so easy. Ill bet you are the go to shop in your area. Take care of that cold and dont be welding any galvanized until you get well. Bill
A point of interest. The crack that you found on the other butt weld, was at the edge of the weld in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the pipe to pipe weld. It is very likely the crack started because of a stress riser caused by sharp edge in the weld to pipe joint. If the welds you completed were ground down, this would eliminate those stress risers. I know it’s more work, but with the butt welds ground flush, when the PT is done, circumferential cracks are easy to see. Also with all stress risers removed from the HAZ, cracking is much less likely
Another great video I learn so much from watching you and the work you do, sorry that you have been sick I thought you where coming down with this bad cold or the flu in your last video I hope you get well soon and get back to feeling normal again.
I too have had two 'colds' this season, and still I'm coughing my head off each day for a few minutes. Man, it wears you out, doesn't it? Nice repair on that bail., I can imagine the real test of your welds will come soon enough, I'm also pretty sure those welds will pass the test.
Great explanations, I could follow all the steps, you are quite good at that, along with the work itself! Really a joy to watch you and I think I can make a use from all your tips and hints to solve a problem, thanks a lot! 👍👍👍
Having seen the push/pull units worked in the field, it is amazing the steel and the welds hold up as well as they do. I've seen the machines working. The back unit pushes to help load the front unit which usually takes 90+/- seconds and the front unit pulls the back unit via the bail you just repaired and they will load the back unit in about 50-60sec. A 627 hauls about 25 yds, a 637 hauls about 35, and a 657 hauls about 45yds. It is an amazing sight to see the dirt just come spilling over the sides of the bowl.
The Goat of welding! Awesome repair brotha. Kurtis did one too and he said he lets it cool before closing it completely because they get so hot and to let out the fumes and moisture. I liked how you did something similar by doing half and then the other bottom half.
Thanks for the welcome 👍 hopefully you get to feeling better and not get the explosive diarrhea flu bug going around 😅 I'll be darn I always thought those were soild not hollow as much weight and force they take.
I sent 3M a message about the positive comments you make about Cubitron. Here's what they said: Thank you so much for sharing! We watched "On Fire Welding's UA-cam Channel" and it's amazing what he's doing! We appreciate the message! Have a nice day! 3M Product Application Support
Not getting off the stinger in time and the front scraper turned sharp when the back scraper was still hooked up . Beginners unless the bail ram failed . I have jigs for 637s And 657s .
To fix stubborn nosey throaty chesty ills, try your favourite pizza but with extra garlic sauce. You will wake up like a fish out of water, but when you go get in the shower, that crap in your throat will be screaming to get out! Make it suffer and wave it goodbye as it goes down the drain! 😂😂😂😂😂 It always cries out to me "I have a wife and phlegm to support!" My response is not fit for decent company unfortunately!😅😅😅😅😅 Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
I am glad I saw a respirator on your face (no offense!) You and youngblood should really try and wear them more often-with one setup for paint. Don't wait until you have problems. Nice job as usual!
we would heat treat these by building a big fire and laying the arch in the coals and covering in sand overnight. seemed to help with the fatigue cracking
For those asking what the Bail bar does can check out ' Digging new landfill cell with fleet of Caterpillar scrapers ' . 3 part video series , very good videos . .
Hey love the videos I have a question about weld's I was told that stick should be used for anything structural because it meltes the steel together but mig is like laying a bandaid over the seem is this true?
100% not true. Wire is just as strong or stronger than stick if done correctly. The people that say that have probably never welded with a proper wire setup.
Great job, seems like those bails snap to easy but I guess they're supposed to break before something more expensive does. Have you tried the cubitron 982cx pro purple discs?
You were running beads for most of the passes, then doing what looked like stitches (or dimes) rather than a continuous bead for the cap. Hard to tell because it's sped up but did I see that right, and if so what does do for the weld?
Thumbs up for the shopping cart alone. I am stunned though that this elaborate process should be cheaper than a mass-produced and fairly straightforward-looking spare part from Caterpillar. On a more OSHA note, I've discovered this excellent silicone rubber half-mask called the GVS Elipse, it is less that $30 and has very convenient elastic headbands. I use it for woodworking, especially while sanding. It would be great to see you use something like that when spraying paint, and worry a bit less about your health. Although it might mean shaving the magnificent beard. I have not found a really beard-friendly lung protection yet.

I like how you can take broken parts and make them like new and keeping tolerance at the manufacturer specs ! Great job as always ! 👍👍

*On Fire Welding* Bravo well done, thank-you sir for taking the time to bring us along. GOD Bless.
Amen! Such quality video content and admirable work ethic.
Thought you sounded under the weather, when I watched you repair the key way, get well soon brother, nice job on the repair
Hope you get feeling better and thanks for uploading the video
Have you ever thought about getting a reward for the operators for creating so much work for you to repair, they deserve something !!!
and the scrap yard guys! endless supply of work for the repair team
The Owners wouldn't like a Reward to their Operators ..and Repair Bills for them?
ok Greg, keeping me up all night watching your exploits,
but ya know what, that is a great thing, cheers, Paul down in Florida
Nice work Greg another quality repair , get well soon

Grinder and paint are your best friends
A grinder and paint make you the welder you ain’t, best damn quote I ever heard
Excellence comes as standard with your expert work. Thanks for posting, most enjoyable.
Sounds like you have a cold...not nice when the dust and fumes are all around you. Nice job yet again.

Excellent repair!!
Better than new as always you the man get well soon brother
Nice solid repair, Greg!
Nice disclaimer about the shopping cart. I also have a few Home Depot shopping carts that I also found at the scrap yard. Lol

Great job. Thanks
Brilliant channel 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Nice work! Being sick sucks! Glad to see you wearing that respirator tho!
Bad A!! as always. Nice pre-assembled welding cart!

Привет, обратил внимание, ваш голос не такой как обычно, вы не здоровы, берегите себя и скорейшего выздоровления! Ваши видео многому меня научили.
" I felt to bad to stay inside " Something only a father would say ....😁 BRAVO SIR
With his shitty tacky welds
Выздоравливай!!!!
OMG - the second I saw the shopping kart I thought to myself "SURELY they didn't steal a shopping kart!!..." 😂
They are quite cheap here where I live, you can take them with you for just 1Euro...
🤣😉😛
Hope you feel better my friend
Good work 👍

Alright! Morning coffees on! Here we go! Cheers!;-)!!
You mentioning the candy apple colour makes me want a candied Apple ha ha
FANCY! Doing two-tone paint jobs now, are you? Great repair! Hope you feel better.
I am glad I saw a respirator on your face (no offense!) You and youngblood should really try and wear them more often-with one setup for paint. Don't wait until you have problems. Nice job as usual!
Nice work , always need to careful when doing these they can explode from the heat when welding them up
562 👍's up on fire welding thank you for sharing 😅

Good too see you
So dapper with the plasma tip switch. Pinky out! haha. Great work man. Clean as fuck, as usual. Can't wait for the next video! Feel better soon!
Feel better ❤️🩹
For those asking what the Bail bar does can check out ' Digging new landfill cell with fleet of Caterpillar scrapers ' . 3 part video series , very good videos . .
I've seen those big hooks. They help move a lot of weight.
Great work! Thanks for sharing. Do you find the plasma gouge easier to control than an air arc?
Yes.
👍
Nice repair, Greg, hope you're feeling better soon. If I may, what brand wire wheels do you use/prefer?
I have been using harbor freight wire wheels with great results.
@@OFW Thanks, Greg!
Nice fix! 👍 What are you repairing on that Cat scraper hitch tower?
Line boring all the holes.
You rule!
Again a master at work. Have you ever done any work for SuKut. I know they have one of the biggest scraper fleets in the US if not the biggest.
I have not.
Greg, did you ever got one of these grinder wheels to break off especially that you don't use the guards ?
Not really. Maybe once a year.
How much does that bail weigh, guesstiment good video
1,000 lbs
Can i suggest you make a reaction commentary video on the pakistani truck or similar YT channel repairs. Those guys are total macgyvers.
Bon Boulo 😆😆👍👍
Western Truck and Tractor Repair gave you another mention on his video 3304 Cat reassembly pt1 at the 32:13 mark
Great job, seems like those bails snap to easy but I guess they're supposed to break before something more expensive does. Have you tried the cubitron 982cx pro purple discs?
Yes
Do you think the purple discs are any different to the brown ones you like to use or do they just cost more?@@OFW
You were running beads for most of the passes, then doing what looked like stitches (or dimes) rather than a continuous bead for the cap. Hard to tell because it's sped up but did I see that right, and if so what does do for the weld?
Yes, I changed my technique to try and fill the un even gap more uniformly.
👍👍
Love the channel. How much would it of been to buy that stock.
About 15k if you can find one
@@OFW that 10k more than I thought. Damn
Seems your shop dog is on holiday in the sunny south.
Never welded before, is the mask purely for protection or is there something you can see happening behind all the light?
It’s like wearing very dark sun glasses. You can see exactly what is going on in the weld puddle.
What are the height of your tables? Great video!
37” to the top.
What kind of steel did you use? Somewhat thick walled...
Customer supplied. It’s probably a standard DOM tube.
Thumbs up for the shopping cart alone.

Fixed it on UA-cam with a Newtube
That root pass weld looked so good, why change wire for the rest of the weld? Great video as usual. Thanks for sharing.
It definitely could be welded out with solid wire. Dual shield has a better deposition rate and is a little better under massive stress.
Ready to break again 😊
Had to use dye pen to check for cracks in aviation to be legal.
I never found a crack that I couldn’t see with a magnifying glass.
When should you preheat your materials ? when welding heavy thickness
Typically yes. Or depending on the alloys.
😊
Not too bad you said lol
Why is the dye used for finding cracks in this application vs something like magnaflux? Is it down to personal preference or is there more to it?
It’s all I had.
@@OFW Sorry, I meant to ask is one better than the other or are they used for different applications?
@@deathlyhopeI think it depends on the situation. Both can be effective.
Necesitas un training en PT testing man
5:40 Bro was zestyy 💅😂
