Somehow this song is EVEN BETTER now than it was when I was 20, and it was amazing THEN. That's actually a trait of the BEST literature, that you can read it every ten years and find entirely new meanins in it.
This whole LP never got its due. How do some bands not make it with great music? There is a long list of those bands… it’s almost criminal. Great Album!!
These guys have to sign their names in blood. If they can't or won't agree to something everything is pulled just as easy as it was given. I love that with Internet we truly have the power to choose who and what we like vs agents and record companies telling us what we like. Ya know?
25yrs ago I would put my headphones on and hide in my room blasting this album.. songs like Homesick and without a trace shaped my youth. I was adopted at birth and always wanted to find my real family... found them 5yrs ago finally made tha call and asked for help... they immediately flew to San Diego and picked me up... ill be starting a new life with my twin brothers and sisters! Its never too late to ask for help! ❤❤
In grade 5 one of my close friends walked up to me and said 'do you know that Carrie is your sister'. I went home and asked my mom and dad wtf. They then told me I was adopted, that Carrie, whom I'd been babysitting for for a year now, and Kathy, who I'd been hanging around with as my godmother, was actually my birthmother. It nearly killed me, I wished I never found out. I'm on the opposing side of telling your adoptive children that they are adopted if you know they will never find out any other way. The hurt and anger it caused in me after being sexually abused for as long as I can remember. Then to find out she had another kid and kept them, like what did I do wrong that I wasn't good enough to be wanted. My parents said I was special because I was choosen. I can't even bring myself to talk to my blood sister and brothers because they didn't have the decentcy to tell me who they were before I was told in school. Peace and much love sent from Ontario, Canada. P.S. I'm now 50 and too old for change. I'm happy it worked out for you. Everyone deserves happiness.
The singer always reminded me of Kiefer Sutherland. I started listening to SA in 1991 when I was about 4 years old. My sister had the let your dim light shine album. One of the most well rounded bands out there. The new music is a bit too formulated & bubblegum for me. Let your dim light shine & Grave Dancers Union are the two albums I can listen to anytime, anywhere.
A woefully underappreciated song/video and band. These guys had a depth and integrity to their angst that only Nirvana could match. Somehow they escaped the media praise they so richly deserved. And that's a damn shame.
Patrick Waters I agree, and the only way people will know who you are talking about is by saying "you know the band that did runaway train" well at least with the people I know.
Underappreciated not totally unappreciated, Most of their songs did not see heavy rotation. The one that did see lots of airplay is the only song anyone seems to remember from this group. And, as you can see, they had much more to offer. Many very good songs that did not get decent airtime. Regards,
Criminally underrated yes. Hall of Fame, No! That's a bloated, corrupted institution which honours sales, not talent. If you get inducted there, it means you sold out and bribed the right people. Soul Asylum don't belong in that wannab elite.
You're missing the point, who gives AF about a soulless organization like RRHF, no class, no awareness, no real appreciation, it's a husk, a front, just like most radio stations, purely in it for the money - I've been there twice, it's ironic since we are talking about this on a song from The Grave Dancers Union, since that place feels more like a collection from grave robbing, than it does a museum
I caught their concert circa mid 90's when they were known as "the loudest band in the world" based on decibel measurements taken by Spin. This is the song they opened their set with. The recording doesn't convey how blistering that opening riff is live. Great show.
The quality of this video is unbelievable good, specially for the time it was released! I still have this album and I didn't know there was a video for this amazing tune. I love Soul Asylum to this day :]

I bought "GDU" the day after I saw an ad for it in Thrasher magazine. I had bought "And the Horse..." and "Hangtime" at a used music store previously and I wasn't really thinking I had to buy "GDU" when I saw the ad, but there it was in the same used music store the next day. The one time I saw them in concert was with Screaming Trees and Spin Doctors. Dave introduced "Nice Guys Don't Get Paid" saying "This song is for James." It's stupid significant for me to be watching this video for the first time today.
I've got four kids from 16 on down to eight and they all know how to sing standing in the sun with a popsicle, Anything is Possible, just watched this for the fifth time and there's a lot to absorb in this video, well done

My wife and I saw Soul Asylum on the campus of Cal State Long Beach not long after the album with this song was released. The Meat Puppets opened for them. We were the two oldest people in the room and may have had the most fun.
I Doubt Dave would categorize it as Grunge. Just happened to be out around the same time. In any case, the whole album is fantastic and I'm surprised they weren't bigger. I think they still tour but he's the only original member.
@@ShawnConrad-tw8du Musically I classify them as a grunge band but you’re right, they were outside of Seattle’s Grunge Scene as they’re from Minneapolis. Stone Temple Pilots also have the same situation. Although twin cities have their own music scene but Soul Asylum were different from other great bands from Minnesota. Bands like Husker Du or The Replacements were influenced by post punk/New Wave kind of music but Soul Asylum were really into 90s alternative rock… . Also you can call them a grunge band because of their fashion and (hair)style,… .
@@ShawnConrad-tw8du they’re kinda big in Minnesota. They’re kinda bigger than Replacements and Husker Du and that’s kinda surprising, because those bands are two of the greatest bands of all time. You google Minnesota rock bands and Soul Asylum comes up first… .
@@Abegoldhatch Those are good points. I'd still never classify them as Grunge. Pirner's songwriting is totally different to me. They obviously had albums before Grave Dancers but I really wasn't aware of them til "And the Horse they rode in On". Either way, they're a terrific, terrific band.
Complexity isn't always desirable, even in music. Better writers than I have commented on the beauty inherent in some of the most "simplistic" art. Also, I think part of what makes Soul Asylum songs generally good-to-great is the coupling of relatively simple music with fairly complex lyrics. The scales balance.
This is arguably the best song I have ever heard come from Dave. Lyrics are fantastic and the song is so damn catchy, i can put it on replay, over and over and over....

I'm really feeling some 90's nostalgia. Old girl friends, Zima, flannel, the music.....
bahaha zima for when you need cough syrup but want to get drunk too

Without a Trace
Soul Asylum
LYRICS
I fell in love with a hooker
She laughed in my face
So seriously I took her
I was a disgrace
I was out of line; I was out of place
Out of time to save face
See the open mouth of my suitcase
Sayin' leave this place
Leave without a trace
Leave without a trace
Leave without a trace
I tried to get a good job
With honest pay
I might as well join the mob
The benefits are okay
Standing in the sun with a popsicle
Everything is possible
With a lot of luck and a pretty face
And some time to waste
Leave without a trace
Leave without a trace
Leave without a trace
I tried to dance at a funeral
New Orleans style
I joined the Grave Dancer's Union
I had to file
Trying to do the right thing, play it straight
The right thing changes from state to state
Don't forget to take your mace
If you're out walking late
I liked to see your face
You left without a trace
You leave without a trace
