I saw Soul Asylum in the early '90's with Screaming Trees and Spin Doctors. My ears rang for three days after. Soul Asylum was by far the best band of the three. Probably one of, if not the best, live performances I've ever seen.
Exactly. It's not about love: it's about something to put things in motion, to take you from where you are to where you want to be. You're waiting by the phone for it to ring, you're waiting for somebody to shove you - something to make things happen and to create something new in your life. That's what makes this song so universal and fascinating - everybody needs somebody to shove.
Underrated is an understatement considering they had so many great songs. Let your dim light shine should alone put these guys in the rock and roll hall of fame. It won't happen but they're worthy in my book.
Saw Soul Asylum Live tonight at the Osage Event Center, in Tulsa Oklahoma, They opened for Candlebox, The show kicked ass. They rocked it out tonight. I saw them in 1993 at "The Station" in Fern Park florida and they were as good tinight as they were back then. It was a kickass 38th Birthday for me
Waited almost 25 years but I saw them live at a music fest in 2018 and at a side stage, early evening/ late afternoon. Fairly full house but only like 10 other fans plus me were rocking out. Everybody there only knew Runaway train. You and I would call them amateurs. Top 10 band of the 90s.
I remember they were labeled as "sellouts" by hardcore fans when they signed to a major label... it was either because of the signing itself or the change in musical style on "Grave Dancers Union" as long as I remember... then "Runaway Train" came, they were bigger than ever, the "new Nirvana fad" on majors faded away and they couldn't keep up with the music industry. "Misery", "Summer of Drugs" are great songs but I don't doubt that this softer music direction was the label's idea after the "Runaway Train" success. Sadly, a lot of bands suffered the same destiny. Of course, regardless of that the band is awesome.
The words remind me of my maternal grandad. He died a lonely guy. He even bought my mum a brand new car in the hope she'd visit him but she couldn't be bothered. He literally used to wait by his phone hoping someone would call. I visited on Sundays to watch football on TV with him, and he vented his frustration for about half an hour then he was fine, actually a nice guy who'd been pretty well frozen out of my early life because my mum had a big row with them, all to do with my mum not being able to cope with motherhood, which she made a train wreck out of. Shame really, he was an ex soldier, coal miner, fireman and post master, I enjoyed his stories and did at least make friends with him before he died, as well as telling him the truth about my mum.

That's so sad 😭 I don't have the same story but there were some in my family who couldn't be bothered to visit grandpa when they lived fairly close, and after he helped generously with all of us financially. Generous, but not "wealthy". Also we're a mixed race family and "some" members of the family have so much blind ree-ing hatred of white ppl that I suspect they included him in that hatred. They hate their own white half, shall we say. My mother took care of him at the end but ridiculed everything he believed even while he's proven right.
Very touching. There's an old pub where I usually go alone to read and write. I've met a couple of elderly men who were beaten by life. I'm just a normal guy, but I could see through their smile that I was a momentary bliss for them to have a deep conversation. Amazing feeling! Never let loners always be alone. (sorry for bad einglish)
Thirty years later and I don't think that I'll ever grow tired of listening to this. Ever. This is also one of those music videos (directed by a young Zack Snyder) that works perfectly with its song.

Back in the mid to late '80s Athens GA was a college rock mecca with REM, Pylon, Dreams So Real, Love Tractor, the B-52s etc (plus other bands like the Indigo Girls and the Georgia Satellites from the nearby ATL). I would dare say that Minneapolis had the same magic with even a bit more success with Bob Mould's Husker Du, Westerberg's The Replacements, Babes in Toyland and these guys Soul Asylum who I feel were one of the most underrated bands of the early '90s. Nothing against that great sound that was coming out of Seattle 30 years ago but these guys deserved far more attention than they got. I do miss the days of MTV when all the above mentioned bands were set prominently in their rotation and many of these bands did the college concert tours.........
This song is SO GOOD because it is SO REAL!!! It has more substance than most Top 40 songs that only show faces with makeup and 'music' that could be 'made' within 3 minutes. Anyone who is able to FEEL understands loneliness and the desperation that this Masterpiece conveys.

I found out only recently this video was directed by Zack Snyder. Now the guitar riff and/or chorus constantly plays in my head when someone gets pushed, punched, or simply shoved in 300, Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and/or the Snyder Cut of Justice League. How very poetical.
Kind of amazing how deep the stable of talent was back then, that these guys were never even really a top attraction aside. I mean, they hit it big with Runaway Train because of the tie-in, but I don't think they were ever even considered top-10 when you'd name bands. Mind you, I love these guys. I've seen them like 3 times now. And they're still going strong. Saw them about a year and a half ago and Dave still sounds great. Almost a completely different lineup now though.
dirtyfacelifttool51 you are so right. The music from that time was the best, so many great times occurred for me during those years of this great music, alternative/grunge forever!
That's amazing. I love grunge. I'm the "rebel" kid at my school because I hate modern music. I started out listening to metal then punk and now grunge. It was quite a change of genre
This is a good song. In addition to the "Grave Dancers' Union" album I also got "Gravity" and "A Change of Fortunes" out from the local library, and I was pleased to hear that Soul Asylum had not changed that much.
Most praise for Soul Asylum usually goes to Runaway Train, Black Gold, or Misery, and rightfully so, but this song hits the hardest for me👍

Let's talk it over, let's go out and paint the town
I'm waiting by the phone
Waiting for you to call me up and tell me I'm not alone
'Cause I want somebody to shove
I need somebody to shove
I want somebody to shove me
You're a dream for insomniacs, prize in the Cracker Jacks
All the difference in the world is just a call away
And I'm waiting by the phone
Waiting for you to call me up and tell me I'm not alone
Yes I'm waiting by the phone
I'm waiting for you to call me up and tell me I'm not alone
'Cause I want somebody to shove
I need somebody to shove
I want somebody to shove me
Yes I want somebody to shove
I need somebody to shove
I want somebody to shove me
Yet another great tune from my youth (it came out the fall of my senior year). SA is from here, much love to them! GDU is one of the best 90s albums.
Every now and then you need to start a mosh. This helps with that!
This song and Misery are my FAVORITE Soul Asylum tunes 👏👏👏🏆🏆🏆🔥🔥🔥😍😍😍
Man, this makes me yearn for being a teenager again - what an awesome time to be alive!
It's a crime how underappreciated and undervalued this band was and still is! They are unreal
Man, I forgot how $#@! good this song is ...
This band is so underrated it amazes me
This was my dads fav song. He just passed but I've loved this song since I was a little girl!
Brings back so many good memories of my Senior year in highschool. The parties, the pranks in the neighborhoods, and just fun.
One of the most underrated songs of all time
One of the best songs ever written
Kind of amazing how deep the stable of talent was back then, that these guys were never even really a top attraction aside. I mean, they hit it big with Runaway Train because of the tie-in, but I don't think they were ever even considered top-10 when you'd name bands.
Mind you, I love these guys. I've seen them like 3 times now. And they're still going strong. Saw them about a year and a half ago and Dave still sounds great. Almost a completely different lineup now though.
The ultimate Valentines Day song!
Good days (1991-95). Some of the best music ever made was released between 1991-95. There's no beating early to mid nineties music.
Couldn't agree with you more, also nice profile pic
Amen to that man.
amen brotha [or sista].
Couldn't agree more.
dirtyfacelifttool51 you are so right. The music from that time was the best, so many great times occurred for me during those years of this great music, alternative/grunge forever!
This takes me back to a time in my life where they helped me get through some a very abusive home. I loved them and still do. Thanks
i love soul asylum so much. i grew up with my dad listening to this musoc. im only 15 and love this stuff. its not like todays music
hayley west my sons 9 and lives with just me he knows every word of 90s grunge alternative hits. Tell ur dad he's doing a good job
@TheLate70s Im 39 yrs. old and hearing this makes me feel in accord with your sentiments towards this song!
I am 60 years old...when I first heard this at rock clubs I wasn't that impressed...sooner hear Led Zep! lol
But now. this is feckin ace!
Best Band ever for just what you need.
one of my fav Soul Asylum song-this album is wicked!
This song made me uneasy .... What a gift
This so reminds me of 1993 when I was 23 back in the days when music was great in that grunge transition!
Frim 91 92 I love this group.
I loved this song when i was a youngster i think i was maybe 8 but i had the tape grave dancers union.. it was one of my favs
How in the hell did I forget about this song O_O
I miss the grunge acts of the 90's.
