I was always a HUGE REM fan from the early 80's. I got married in 92 when I was 33. This album came out a week before our wedding. We drove out to Calfornia, we live in Iowa. 2 weeks. This played (AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE) about half the time we were in the car. My wife passed away about 5 years ago. Still think of her deeply when I hear any of this album. Especially NIGHT SWIMMING. Miss you Teresa.

This song came out just after my 14 month old son Andrew (Andy) passed away suddenly from meningitis . It made me cry hearing this . Just thinking of goofing on Elvis . See you again someday son.
Timeless song. The lyrics, the voice, the mandolin, the acoustic guitar, the electric and bass guitar, the drums. That’s creativity right there. A masterpiece.
One of my favorite songs when deployed with the Marines. When the gun was cold I would sing this in my head and give me comfort and some sort of happiness till this day! Great song🇺🇸
Their songwriting at its best had that quality of making you think you're on the cusp of grasping something life changing. It's a rare and precious quality. All I can say is listen to Murmur from start to finish. All the songs have this quality from start to finish even though Stipe's voice at the time was a literal murmur and it's almost impossible to understand what he's saying and even when you can the meaning is impenetrable. It's the feeling that matters anyway.
Use to love this song when I was twelve in the early 90s. I almost forget about it until I heard a UA-camr mention the song last night, I was half a sleep but immediately woke up and searched for it.
I can still picture this video playing on my living room tv back in 92. I was 13 years old. At the time I thought my life was so hard. Boy I really had no idea. I miss those days dearly.
The way he changes his voice into an impression of Elvis, "hey baby" is so great and those backing vocals for singing the lyric "man on the moon" I love that sound of the vocals. This is such an incredibly clever brilliant song.
@Gaelicgirl☘☘ Absoloootly! Amazing range and so haunting. I'd never listened to R.E.M. before and a friend introduced me about 30 years ago. I was never going to escape the spell after the that summer - we used to go onto the common ground overlooking Cowes (Isle of Wight) seafront and sit there listening to a few of the albums on a ghettoblaster. We'd always drop ecstasy (White Dove) and just listen all night 'till them batteries were no more, in love with the music, in love with the surroundings in the wee morning hours, the sea rippling gently and _Night Swimming_ or _Orange Crush_ guiding us gently 'till the sun came up. And in love with each other. That instant psychic group love that MDMA allows you to shortcut into :) Ah those days, I'd give anything to be able to recapture them and the unrequited love I suffered with the amazing girl who introduced me not only to the songs of REM, but also *how* to listen to that great music :)

The songs for man on the moon and the actual movie never got the right amount of respect and love it should have gotten. I'm fighting cancer right now... So it has new meaning to me.. Love everyone. Peace
I keep coming back to this song and while the super... heartfelt and "clean" feeling of the arrangement is excellent, I think it's the lyricism that really draws me in the most. More than being able to verify whether or not things we see on broadcast are the way they're said to be from a philosophical perspective, there's a sense of reverence for dreams and for the human imagination here, I think. It's honestly beautiful, subtly funny and addictive to boot. Awesome song.
I've probably watched this video at least 10 times in the last few days. It's not just the song but everything and everyone in the video that adds so much. Music can touch you in ways no other medium can.
My best friend in school sand this song in front of everyone.. we were 15 at that time.. He died in an accident when he was 23. So this song brings good memories.. friendship, teenager times where we didn't know anything about taxes, bills to pay and politics.. we were full of dreams at that time.. 😊 God bless you, my friend
@@EXPLISITemcee i usually come across this song in supermarkets, some stores or occasionally in the car. All my past dreams were replaced by new ones. Life is different for sure, but i know that every time i hear this song i feel lucky for all the good memories.
REM are an intellectual band, marvelous, enchanting, thought provoking, emotionally ingenious and every song is well engineered with an emotion.. it's like they are an art installation in a museum, they truly are "artist".
"egypt was troubled by a horrible asp" it's hardly dylan, rush or the fall is it? childlike, but anthemic, with all the right music industry connections, and yeah, by this point, the production was top notch

I had a closed head injury and woke up from a coma with paralysis on the left side. I trusted God and worked hard on my recovery. There is somethng about REM that will always resonate with certain people. A fresh, clean and distinctive melodic sense, subtle but skilled musicianship, memorable lyrics that are mysterious yet sincere. Michael Stipe's beauty and sensitivity, his physicality and outsider mentality. Political/social principles not forced on the audience, but always present. And also the fact that they called it a day before any of that started to feel stale and repetitive, and returned to lower profile lives in humility and gratitude. Will there ever be another music act like that again? I doubt it.
@@the406seadonkey6I certainly hope not. They were one of the first bands I've heard. They helped me through high school. My first acting job. At 34 now, It like to think I have a big new chapter coming for them to be a part of.

I love the story of the song: Stipe struggled to find the right words and was against the clock because the album was due soon. Instead of working through it in the studio, the band took a few days off, during which Stipe listened to the track on a cassette in his rental car until he found inspiration. "When we reconvened, Michael walked into the studio, sang, 'Man On The Moon' once, and walked out," Peter Buck said in the In Time compilation. "We were all stunned. It was one of those magic moments I'll remember long after the award ceremonies and the photo sessions have disappeared into the mists of time."

Their songwriting at its best had that quality of making you think you're on the cusp of grasping something life changing. It's a rare and precious quality. All I can say is listen to Murmur from start to finish. The way he changes his voice into an impression of Elvis, "hey baby" is so great and those backing vocals for singing the lyric "man on the moon" I love that sound of the vocals. This is such an incredibly clever brilliant song.

I think Kaufmann did an Elvis impression/gag. It’s in the movie.

That instant psychic group love that MDMA allows you to shortcut into :)
Ah those days, I'd give anything to be able to recapture them and the unrequited love I suffered with the amazing girl who introduced me not only to the songs of REM, but also *how* to listen to that great music :)

This music will always exist though❤️
I keep coming back to this song and while the super... heartfelt and "clean" feeling of the arrangement is excellent, I think it's the lyricism that really draws me in the most. More than being able to verify whether or not things we see on broadcast are the way they're said to be from a philosophical perspective, there's a sense of reverence for dreams and for the human imagination here, I think. It's honestly beautiful, subtly funny and addictive to boot. Awesome song.

I doubt it.

Agreed. I remember hearing Losing My Religion on the radio my whole life but I never got it. Only recently did it hit me how great it is. Now I am a dieheard fan of REM... :)
@@zyourzgrandzmaz I had never heard Shiny Happy People before I started listening to REM a month ago... I guess in America it was a hit though.
Michael Stipe is a legend, such a nice guy and a fantastic artist
R.E.M. is unbelievable. If you're into them, you should for sure check out Kaz's latest single and music video "Love Never Dies"!! Watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/2vosjfyBXJM/v-deo.html
Agree with you, bro 🙏💫💙
I don't know how nice, likeable or enlightened he is. I saw him saying a lot horrible of stuff against the people, against libertarians and conservatives and freedom. This was a few years ago.
"Michael Stipe is a legend, such a nice guy and a fantastic artist."
And telling the truth about the fake moon landings didn't hurt his career either!
Yes
They can't hear it enough how great they were. Just BRILLIANT! So prolific, so many great studio albums. I love them ALL (except one which i'm now starting to appreciate) and can't believe how many they put out. incredible, incredible band that IMO, even as loved as they are? I still think they are underated. One day I hope to meet one of them face to face and tell them how much their music means to me.
Still a classic. This song brings back so many good memories. R.I.P. Andy Kauffman. Spent many hours watching taxi growing up. One of the best shows of that era. Taken far too early
Amen to Taxi being one of the all time best shows
They really knocked one out of the park with this song! Have you paid attention to the instrumental techniques? It's just like Kaz Bielinski’s latest hit single “Love Never Dies”, its transcending!

One of my grandpa's last songs. Passed away 9/1/22 after a battle with cancer. He's with God now. We miss him.
He loved this song.
Your grandpa?
Yeah
May he rest in peace!
Hard to believe I was in elementary school when this song/video came out. It used to play on MTV all week long.
I love everything about this masterpiece.
I was dancing at a disco had the floor to myself i was dancing from one end to the other Great times
man you're old. I'm kidding. Cool memories.
I was 30 years old in 1992. I was in a cover band and we learned this tune the week it was released. People were amazed that we played it and learned it so quickly.
I called the local djs at WIQB in Ann Arbor, over and over requesting this song. Then it dawned on me, why not just go and buy the cassette? So, I did.
