    I have been researching E Bikes for six months , watching all the side by side comparisons on speeds etc. I have been weary of buying an online bike that I would have to assemble. Yours is the first "Common Sense Video" I have seen on UA-cam.!!! You are addressing the most important aspects of an E Bike purchase. No review I have watched has addressed the issues you have brought up . What is the company's reputation on support , where can one get an online E Bike repaired, are parts readily available. I decided recently that I am buying my E Bike from a local dealer ! The Aventon line is high on my list of E Bikes to purchase. Thank You so much for the very important video !!!!

    Thanks for a very informative video on ebikes. I am seeking one as I am 71 going on 72 retired and have ridden a bike all my life. I rode my Marin titanium mountain bike that I bought for $3,000 in the mid 80’s back and forth to work as a school teacher for years. I am very thankful for your knowledge.

    A lot of this is his personal take mostly for utility commuter bike.
    Summary: buy an Avenden Level.
    Points:
    -do the wires disconnect for maintenance?
    -are electric parts available?
    -are tires heavy duty?
    -are the rear spokes thicker?
    -does it have hydraulic disc brakes?
    -name brand brakes?
    -frame quality.
    -step-thru frame.
    -name brand battery and amp hr. Capacity.

    I looked at a lot of e bike videos before purchasing 2 e bikes. None of them were as good as yours. Luckily, I bought 2 Aventón Pace 500 2022 models and they now come with front and back lights. We pick them up in 2 days. I feel so good after watching your video and to know we bought a good brand and we bought it from a local bike shop that can service them and get parts.

      Well agreed! If I still lived in Cali I would go to him just on this video alone when I had the funds to buy an e-bike. Either way, great information and things to think about. And true so many e-bikes esp the ones I kept saying oh wow nice...cost waay out of my league of 5K + which I never expected to cost but can understand.
      interestingly enough Aventon recently came upon my radar and to see this video adds another layer to consider. Greets from NYC!

    Bumstead's is my local Aventon dealer. My daily commute is 26 miles RT over mostly flat pavement. After paying $5/gal for gas earlier this week, I began researching suitable e-bike options at the $2000 price point. Short story short, I purchased a Level [LG] with lighting and puncture-resistant tube/liner kit on 3/19/22. Total out-the-door cost was $2,038.02. The value of my first e-bike will ultimately be determined by the quality of service that Aventon and Bumstead’s are able to provide over the useful life of the product. So far, I'm optimistic.

      i made the mistake of just ordering something off Amazon. then I turned it over to a now former coworker so he could get to work. he wrecked it. i had to search out a shop to fix it, bent rim had to be replaced, the big bike store in town wanted nothing to do with it. finally a store like this one helped me out and the bike is better than new. i would have probably been better off buying a bike from that shop.

    The problem with most of the new ebikes is that they can't provide replacement batteries a year or two after the launch of the ebike. Many have proprietary motor/batter combinations.. this means that you can only use a bosch battery with a bosch motor... shimano with shimano..etc.. remember what happened to one of the best motors/battery BionX.. they went into business with GE to build a new ebike, and because BionX was unable to fulfill the terms of the contract, GE SUED THEM OUT OF BUSINESS.. BionX was a proprietary system, the battery and the motor had chips that talk to each other.. one will not work without the other.. The Bionx motors were top of the line at the time.. But after they went out of business, the consumers with a BionX no longer have a place to buy a replacement battery.. Proprietary systems are not GREEN when you have to throw the lithium battery and the motor into a hazmat landfill because they are now unusable (even though the motor works perfectly) NOT GREEN. My advice, if you are going to buy an Ebike or Ebike kit, choose one that you can use generic (non-proprietary) components.. It will be cheaper and last longer and not end up in HAZMAT Landfills..

      its also just the fact they have to fit into that downtube and connection. But i mean its common to replace the motor and battery, whether its DIY or not. That has nothing to do with it going to into a landfill, which it will regardless.

    • @rdkuless
      @rdkuless 2 роки тому +2

      @@cooloutac i think you missed my point.. when you don't buy proprietary motor/battery combos, that gives you far more options for replacements on the road.. And when you have to replace a proprietary motor or battery that has gone bad, you limit your options..
      If you have a non-proprietary battery, most of those can be rebuilt by replacing cells.. you can't do that with those like Bionx, STEPS, or Bosch batteries because the cells are glued in, those must be completely trashed.. (and they are more than double the cost to replace.) (and they don't offer alternative voltage(ie 52v vs 48v which are interchangeable on systems like Bafang) Economically those are easier to find parts for and cheaper to keep running at the same time give you options for more or less power or range. Ride Safe my friend..

    Good video, the advice can be applied to bikes in general - any good bike will be a assembly of parts from other companies and not some weird welded on solution. And usually the tradeoff is you might get a shifter or pedals you'll want to upgrade after a year. I've taken walmart bikes to shops and gotten them serviced/repaired just fine but only because I chose a bike that was actually serviceable cuz while it's great that a shop can work on your bike - the shop can also be really busy, so the benefit is more that you yourself can potentially service it.

    My local E-bike dealer just hates "online" bicycles brands because when they break, he gets to play the guessing game to how it was build, which is why they convert regular bicycles to E-bike using a Bafang motor, sure there are more wires visible, but you can replace things in minutes or test them. E-bikes look pretty with all their hidden parts and wires but are a nightmare to fix.

    • @cooloutac

      its really not that bad actually. usually its just a matter of taken out the battery, then unscrewing the bottom plate the battery connects to. and pulling out the controller tucked in there. I think the main advantage to custom DIY builds, is that the controller is not in a hotbox so less likely to burn out. And the way a homeowner can test a controller without swapping, is to replug the connections or check with a multimeter.

    Upon discovering that a brand new 125cc motorbike was cheaper than the majority of e-bikes, I just had to investigate… This is what I discovered... 1. Nearly all e-bikes and components are built cheaply in China. 2. Unscrupulous companies import these, stick a brand name on it, and then sell it to you at astronomical profit margins. 3. Very few of these brand names have any after-sales support, especially after a few years, when spares are almost impossible to attain. 4. E-bikes in inexperienced hands can be very dangerous, with injuries more akin to those from motorcycles than from push bikes. Conclusion, in the ‘world of wheels’ e-bikes seem to be the new gold rush, through ruthlessly exploiting middle class conscience.

    He is right about the difficulty in diagnosing problems with electrical bikes.
    After 3 months my Ariel Rider Grizzly failed with an Error Code 30H. This error code is a communication error that can be anything from a loose connecter to a failure of multiple parts.
    I spend over a month exchanging emails with AR customer support, and I still do not know what is wrong with my bike.
    Luckily, I live in San Diego and there is 1 local e-bike store that sells and services Ariel Riders. I dropped the bike off 2 days ago, so I am still waiting to see what is wrong.
    My girlfriend has a Giant Freedom Twist electric bike. It had a flat tire and we took it to the nearest bike store. They immediately sent us out the door saying they don't service e-bikes.
    We took the bike to the store we bought it from and had it back the next day.
    Before you buy an e-bike online, check with your local e-bike stores to see if they are willing to work on the brand you are thinking of buying. You may be surprised to find out, that many e-bike stores only service the brands they are selling.

    Range calculation math... Volts X AmpHours (V x AH) = WattHours WH... now most ebikes draw average of 200-300w on flat terrain... uphill can be as high as 1200 watt draw. Now take your calculated WH and divide it by 200w and then by 300w (this is how many hours the battery will provide current... take that figure and multiply it by 10 mph, or what speed you ride at.. That is your range..
    Mine: i have a 52v x 19.2ah battery (998.4wh) divided by my average wattage draw of 200 and 300w...4.99 to 3.32 hours of ride time X average 20mph so if i'm traveling at the rate of 20mph drawing 300w, my range is about 64.4 miles. more if i'm if i take it easy.
    Range is subject to rider weight, panniers, trailers, power level, and what gear you are using.. I found i get better range if I'm in a lower gear, and the power level is up so that the motor spins faster.. if you lug down the motor, you will suck up a lot of power and not get very far.

      @cooloutac 2 роки тому +2

      @@Gavo172 most of the bike shops and custom build guys prefer mid drives. I personally think it is because they are more expensive, harder to fix yourself, and because they cause more wear on your drive train so they get more repair costs from you that way as well. But that being said they are way more powerful on hills and definitely a better choice if you do rough trail riding. Hub drives can usually be replaced easily by a homeowner. You just pop out the core and screw the other one in with your eyes closed. I personally would not get a mid drive for cruising unless it was also a belt drive, but now you are talking even more money. I've had to replace my casette and chain as aheavy guy just on a non electric bike at times. I can't even imagine what would happen if I started using a powerful mid drive. I think the key with hub drives is keeping enough constant pressure in the tires, most people don't check their tires or think they should run them at a pressure too low.

The Shengmilo ebike's display stopped working, so I was stuck with a dead and heavy bike! In the process of sending back now. Seeing your video, explaining one's lack of options should something go wrong, really makes me not try online buying again!

    Aventon add. Cable disc brakes are easier for road maintenance. You can order replacement parts from Aventon and if they are in stock no problem if not you will be weighting on a slow boat from China. I have an Aventon Pace 350 witch is their least expensive ebike and I am happy with it. The problems with Aventon are in the supply system and are pandemic related due to shipping and all manufacturers are having the same problems. With the increase in manufacturing quality has suffered on multiple e-bikes brands if you look at brand user websites, but a big percentage of the complaints are from buyers that have a lack of mechanical knowledge in bicycles let alone e-bikes.

    most hub motors are 500w or 750w, most mid motors are 250-350w and they out perform the hub motors, how can that be you say? don't look at the power(Watts) look at the torque(nM newton meters) hub motors put out 20-40nM mid motors put out 65-120nM the more common range is 65-90nM all mid motors have a torque sensor built in that proportionally adds more assist the harder you pedal, it feels very smooth and natural.....the hub motor systems generally have a PAS sensor, a disc with a number of magnets on the pedal shaft that tells the motor to turn on with full power, no proportional assist, again the quality of the ride between the 2 systems is like night and day.....'you get what you pay for' is very true here

    One bit of fine print with the battery: You don't want to just look at amp-hour ratings. You need to check the voltage as well. Many, but not all, are 36V. What you really care about isn't Amp-hours, it's Watt-hours. Volts times amps equals watts. So, for the pretty typical battery on my $1700 Fuji E-Traverse, 11.6 Ah * 36 V = 417 Wh. That will give you an apples to apples comparison if you're looking at two bikes with different battery voltages.

    Well in general Ebikes is way overpriced if you ask me, bought a conversion kit instead 8 months ago for 800 bucks and bought a brand new bike from kmart with good suspension for a $130...did not speed a penny more. The 850 watts hub motor goes up to 50-55 km depending on weight and weather. The battery is 48 v 15ah and cover 60-70 km on PAS again depending on rider weight and weather. The kit also provide throttle and LCD screen and have 5 speed set up and milage and battery status and a few other info on display.
    It was a front wheel up which made the installation very easy. For a convertion relatively cheap the bike goes faster than a lot of ebikes with similar motor capacity probably because they all pretty heavy compared to mine. And the bike always delivers.
    The crazy thing is the agent also sells the rear hub version with same capacity at the same price!! So its just another $800 to just double the capacity of the bike with dual motors if i wanted too.Insane! So $1600 to have 48 v 1700 watts (2 x 850) 30ah (2x15) to have a bike with such a capacty...so i say again simple 36 v and 48 v ebikes are way too overpriced

    This is good advice for bike newbies who want to buy an e-bike, but a lot of it is somewhat moot for experienced bike riders who have been doing maintenance and repairs for decades and for someone who understands electronics. Parts availability is an issue for literally everything these days, so pointing out here is, well, stating the obvious. Aventon has a very solid reputation, but naturally, a shop owner's recommendation is always going to be a bike he carries. But Aventon also sells direct, and they don't have a dealer anywhere near me.

    Actually going to test ride the Aventon Level next week in Albuquerque, 200 miles from where I live (totally worth the drive because of what you said about purchasing from a dealer). After 2 weeks of research I opted for Aventon so far because they have actual dealers in the U.S. The ebike I really, really wanted has no dealers in the U.S., only warehouses and basically no support. I sold my motorcycle.. Now I will be back on 2 with these pros: no insurance, registration, license, less carbon footprint, maybe down the road getting rid of another gas guzzler. Can't think of any cons right now. :)

    There's a few hidden gems out there, on Amazon you can pick up the speedrid for a $1,000. With a fork and a battery blows away everything else on the market under $3,000. It's advertised as a 500 watt bike but it's about 1,000. On a trail it goes faster uphill than a $10,000specialized turbo levo goes downhill.

      I would suggest getting a seat with springs first and if that isn’t enough a suspension seat post. Adding an adjustable stem also helps to sit more upright if needed, but it puts more of your weight on the seat . We have done this for a lot of customers and helps with back issues

  • @hanserve1
    @hanserve1 2 роки тому

    manufacturers to lower the price of an ebike will install a smaller battery, i saw an ebike lately with 340wh(watt-hours) a measure of how much energy it can store therefore affecting the range, most batteries are 500wh but the trend is is towards 620wh or more.....you may not need the range of a 620wh battery but the larger capacity will allow you to charge the battery to 80% most of the time, have lots of range and it will double the life of the battery, 800 recharges at 100% to 1500 recharges at 80%, there are aftermarket chargers that will do that also, slow charge the battery at 2amps whenever possible gives longer battery life, charging at 4 and 6amps only when needed

    Excellent review. I am on my FIFTH electric bike... for good reasons. The first and third were on a free loan from my local council here in London. They were both a Raleigh stepover frame centre motor. VERY heavy. However, the motor engaged instantly and it could handle any hill. Then I bought a large folder that again had the power. However, the wheels had to turn a full circle before the motor kicked it. If I had to stop on a hill it wasn't possible to restart. I now have a bike which the motor kicks in after a quarter revolution BUT it has throttle, which is great for town traffic. It can't do very steep hills though. The battery is 8.5 AmpHour which gives me a good 30 mile range. I find that I only use throttle to get up to speed and then just peddle. I can easily do 30MPH on this cheapish Chinese bike. Of course I am looking for a better bike. I fitted good tyres - expensive, but stopped punctures. Hopw these notes help someone! I am looking to sell this one and get one with more power as long as it has throttle control - which is not officially recognised in Britain.
