Hi! Fun fact about John Longstreth. I'm his big sister, and our father was a professional Jazz musician (Russ Long). John was playing along to Buddy Rich by age 3.
Saw him in New Zealand with origin a few years ago. His feet almost become a blur. We met him in the street and got all shy like girls meeting beiber, but that's how metal heads get when they see one of the greatest drummers of all time just walking by. Please pass on my appreciation for them bothering to come all the way over here. Many bands don't bother
Dude fucking same. I got the privilege of playing with Unmerciful in a tiny dive bar when John was drumming for them and my jaw was on the floor the entire time. He’s also one of the nicest dudes I’ve ever met, super humble, super down to earth and really friendly
Flip the script! Since the metal community seems to be your main subscriber base. How about a video where you show the community an amazing jazz drummer? Particularly, for those in the metal community who haven't yet dove into jazz. Make the community aware of great jazz or at least accelerate learning jazz.
I really wish more musicians (and people in general) were as open-minded as you. You hit the nail on the head when you said (and I'm paraphasing) "I'm not going to listen to this band, but you have to admit it demands an amount of appreciation". You would be amazed at how many times I've tried to expose people to extreme metal only to have them dismiss it as "just noise" or having "no feel". They can't even admit that what I'm showing them requires an insane amount of skill and it infuriates me to no end lol. You obviously understand that musicians from different genres write music for a multitude of reasons and they all aim to evoke different kinds of emotions/feelings. Anyway, thanks again for going into all of these reaction videos with an open mind and sharing your thoughts. You have earned yourself a new subscriber, sir.
Well said brother, I have done the same thing, and I get pissed too. I have a very open mind for music, I'm like show me your stuff and 9x out of 10 I find SOMETHING good about it. Anyway, stay cool my friend 🤘🤘
Origin is so good. I saw them at a local dive bar more than 10 years ago, and there was NOBODY there. It was wild. They were in town during the Drake relays in Drake neighborhood, so it was just empty. Maybe, and I mean this literally, 5 paying customers. They still played like it was a packed house. Absolute mad men. I was noshing with my friend, we were the only two and everyone else was at the bar, and they just played their heart out. One if the coolest things I ever saw a band do, because that would have been super disheartening.
I got to meet the lead singer from Origin when he subbed for Psycroptic in Petaluma and he is literally one of the nicest dudes. I love the metal community omg. Them going full bore when no one is there definitely tracks haha.
I saw the lead singer from antithesis dayz sub for pathology vocals during one of the immolation shows they opened up for. Dude was fucking beast! Also saw him several times including at least a few times at summer slaughter. definitely one of my favorite bands especially with the old singer
I love the respect you give to the metal!! Here’s a little secret... A lot of these bands, their song structures (like the video you did for Gene Hogland), it’s basically jazz with different settings. Growls for vocals, guitars are super distorted, but the drumming of players like this guy, Hellhammer (of the band Mayhem), Trym of Emperor, Frost of Satyricon, Steve Ashiem of Deicide, those bells, crashes and ride flicks are just the best!!! I like that you see that and know how much talent and dedication it takes. I was in a black metal band, and we had a jazz drummer and it made so many things so interesting while playing that extreme style of music. All these heavier styles have no code when it comes to song structure.
I just found this video. I grew up with John in Kansas City when he first joined Origin. He was working on his technique 20 plus years ago. Incredible drummer and very technically minded.
Origin is not for everyone. They push their ballistic speed for so long that most of the listeners don't make that far, to the parts when finally the groove kicks in, and when the Origin's groove kicks in, there is nothing out there like that, even between a million of tech-death bands.
Im 43yrs old and Origins Staring into the Abyss is the song that turned me onto them. Ive also been a fan of death metal since I was 15yrs old in high school but man you are never to old to dig on something like this.
Origin is just one of those bands. One of the heaviest acts ever and I love them! Really funny guys. It's like metals version of Rallying, just going as crazy and fast as you can down small forest roads.
Fantastic.! I love how drummers can drum with our mouths. It's part of the package. John is as percise as it gets. I can remember how much people would stop and EXTREME listen to double bass back in the day. Early 90's. Morbid Angel, Deicide, Cannibal, Obituary(much slower, with Groove.!) just to name a few of the obvious. Those drummers were my reason for living man.! No UA-cam back then. Had to go to school, or figure that sh_t out for yourself. Pantera's Far beyond driven, was the album that changed me forever. Sounds so pure and powerful. Put feet on a new level (and difficulty) for many I'm sure. Becoming is a song that hit me in the heart.
I stumbled upon your channel the other day and I kept saying " I love his insightful honest reactions, I hope he looks at ... drummer" and lo and behold you've already reacted to them. Every time!
Do a video on the live performance Spencer Prewett of Archspire song is Rapid Elemental Dissolve on sick drummer magazine. I'd love to hear what you'd say about his gravity blast
Seen these play live twice and I made sure I was up front to see John playing and I was lucky enough to get a drumstick! The guitarist Paul Ryan is another magician!🤘🏻
Yeah Nils Fjellström AKA Dominator from Dark Funeral.Any video will do cuz he is a sight to behold. And dont go wonder about his leaning stance on the vids, its only for stamina at live cuz those DF-songs aint rly easy to hold up like 45 min straight :D
John is by far the best extreme metal drummer hands down. His power, control and consitence is out of this world. And he is one of the nicest down to earth guys I've ever met.
John is definitely a godfather among death metal drummers. There were plenty that came before him but he was one of the first “shock drummers” that came along in the genre where your drum buddies would go “you have to hear/see this guy!” Super influential for the younger cats who followed in his footsteps.
It’s so nice to see the recognition of something that the vast majority o people are not able to understand and I guess that can happen when looking at a painting or a ballet. Origin are 100 years ahead of their time and their work will endure trough time. Respect!

Lol “Origin I’m not going to listen to your music... I’m too old, I’m too rundown in my ways to get into something like that but I respect you.” One of the most honest statements I’ve ever heard. And Longstreth... helluva drummer btw.
I made a comment on Origin's IG page. Came over here to watch this after you liked that comment. I've met John and watched Origin live multiple times here in Topeka, where most of the band is from. Thanks for the reaction.
Longstreth (Legstrength?) playing this song is probably my favourite metal drumming video, despite the fact that there's a whole other world going on down at his feet which you can't see or hear, which is a shame.
Garrett, I've really been digging you're videos! Have you heard of Thank You Scientist? It's a really cool 7 piece prog rock band that takes influence from almost every genre, but particularly jazz! Also, their drummer, Joe Fadem, is a machine. Seen them live many times and he just KILLS IT! Unfortunately there aren't many drum cams of him playing but they do have a few live sessions! I'm pretty sure I had that same look on my face the first time I saw them live, but I was in awe of the bass player, lol This is a very impressive band to see live
John is such an amazing drummer and awesome person! He works at the music school I attend and we can just bullshit for hours. Him and another one of my teachers Tobias Ralph put together a CRAZY workshop called Murder Hands Bootcamp where they incorporate all the techniques and exercise they practice. Devin Townsend - Hear Me! Drum playthrough by 66samus! He is a monster on the drums and Devin Townsend is a composing genius! (he basically writes the drum tracks and hires drummers that can play them).
The thing is , in that video you cant hear his foot work wich Is awesome , and second the original versión of the song was recorded by James King who is another monster , but I liked the face you put when you saw IT, its the same face that all drummer experience when they see John!!!
Meinl Cymbals - John Longstreth - "Invariance Under Transformation" CYMBALS CYMBALS CYMBALS!!! And you get a very decent high frame rate video with it. And him giving an overview of his cymbals at the end of the video.
I've been a metal fan and guitarist for over 20 years and have always loved the use of cymbals in metal but never really thought to think of why until you broke it down here. Thanks! Also, react to anything by Dan Presland from Ne Obvliviscaris.
There's a band i really want you to check out for the drums! ! ... Beecher ... I couldn't find a drum video for this band. But there are blasts, odd time signatures and plenty of delicate cymbal work. And the recording style is incredible. Again a UK band, best of hardcore! ... 'Beecher'!!! .. 'breaking the fourth wall' is their killer album. I know you'll appreciate them. Love!!!

Facts.

As a guy that listens to both metal and jazz I agree 100%
@@dismemberingcarcass I've been diving deeper into classical recently. Would love to journey into jazz.
Just google "Buddy Rich".

I love jazz and metal. Big fan of Ed Blackwell, Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Philly Joe, Billy Higgins, Danny Amendola etc. I love music period.
"Hes got T rex arms."lomao
i *think* Garrett means that John is playing fingers-only, no wrist, no arms?
That comment about made me wake my whole family laughing.

"This boy... has done... his stickcontrol exercises" haha :D
The way John plays, there is totally groove. He is arguably one of the grooviest extreme drummer.
dude you get it. excellent. keep the knowledge coming
John Longstreth. Remember seeing this dude back in the early 2000s with Origin. Insanity. "this boy" is a LEGEND
And I would have to disagree on the groove part. John has tons of groove, it's just different and harder to grasp at his speeds.
This guy reacted immediately to John's ride playing - one of the keys to John's groove.
His grooves are literally what turned me on to Origin way back in like 08

John Longstreth is the first drummer I remember doing gravity blasts. Really mindblowing technique.
John was the first drummer to bring Gravity Snare Blastbeats to the spotlight.
First done by 'gin's original drummer, George Fluke
In my opinion John is the best drummer in metal. He is so creative and unique, not to mention his insane technique and stamina. He an absolute legend.
John "t-rex“ longstreth
