  • The line-up of Maddy Prior, Gay Woods, Peter Knight, Bob Johnson, Tim Harries and Liam Genockey only released the one studio album together, 'Time' in 1996. In the same year, a VHS videotape of the album was released with the band miming to the album tracks in front of a UK audience! (Not Steeleye's usual practice.)
This song is a band original; written, sung and with a spoken introduction by Peter Knight.

I'm a lifelong fan and I mean that literally as I've loved them since I was old enough to know what music is. This has to be one of my favourite and Time, the album from which it is taken, is one of my all time favourite albums by any act.

Maddy Prior is one of the greatest female vocalists of the 20th/21st century.

This song is purely magical! It's also scary, beautiful, nasty and awesome. In other words, I don't know what to think of it, but I keep on listening to it. It's a very strong song!

Peter Knight's pre-log is very helpful here. This song as powerful as it is is not a traditional folk-song. However it is in the sprite of such and so is a welcomed song. It may become a folk-song in the decades ahead. Powerful song.

I have been very familiar with this song since about 2008, thanks to the Houston, TX bsed band, Clandestine. They recorded a more up-tempo interpretation of this on their 2008 album, ReD. I love the song, and just a week ago I decided to learn it myself. I styled my version after Clandestine’s, with driving, passionate rhythm. After transcribing the chords from memory, I went searching for a UA-cam version to check my work. I could not find any recordings by Clandestine. Only then did I learn that this is a Steeleye Span original.
I was a big fan of Steeleyeye Span in my college days and I have all their albums on vinyl up through “Live at Last” (1978). For reasons unclear to me, although I saw them play live at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby in May 1985 (with Fairport Convention and Renaissance!), I don’t have any of their more recent recordings (yet!). That’s the problem with having thousands of recordings and hundreds of favorite bands across a dozen or more genres.
I love the dark theme and the clever writing. This is a great composition and it shows very well in both the Steeleye Span and Clandestine versions.

I heard someone cover this song last night at an open mic in PA. Had to look it up to make sure I heard it right. 😬. I did. Great song. A little creepy

Can't hardly find this song anywhere. One of Steeleye's best. Too bad they're not very mainstream, then again maybe that's a good thing.

a great exaample of how authority fgures can program peoples subconcious into doing things there logical mind would rebel at as inlogical, but because there subconciuos has been programed directly by a authority figure(it acepts anything as fact from a authority figure) it feels like the right thing to do

Without knowing more about who wrote this song and what message they were trying to convey, you have to remember that there are religious extremists in any faith who use the tenets of said faith for evil. Don't throw out all the good that also comes from people of faith because of those who used it for evil. And remember too a lot of evil has come about from people of no faith!!

"It's there we will forgive you...".
Well, we all know who really requires forgiveness for their genocide against non-Christian cultures, but I ain't forgiving the Catholic Church and their Protestant peers until they acknowledge (and not just in words) their crimes and ask for forgiveness.

Amazing song, Maddy gives it her all, but Gay seems to stand there like a tailor's dummy, totally uninvested in the music
