- The line-up of Maddy Prior, Gay Woods, Peter Knight, Bob Johnson, Tim Harries and Liam Genockey only released the one studio album together, 'Time' in 1996. In the same year, a VHS videotape of the album was released with the band miming to the album tracks in front of a UK audience! (Not Steeleye's usual practice.). This song features both Prior and Woods on lead vocals.

Tim Harries on bass has to be one of the most enthusiastic performers I've seen. Although more associated with jazz he was such a delightful addition to Steeleye and it would have been great had he continued.
Indeed , superb bass player , shame he did not stay , I have seen and heard him in other settings , always excellent.

Usually wears what I call my grandma's curtains. However, band and song fabulous. Great to see and hear Gay up front again.
I saw them do this live in Louisville, Kentucky during the "Time" tour. Great performance.
Gay Woods provides the dominant vocal throughout this song and does all the harmony to boot. Steeleye Span was at it's best when she was a member, the mellow timbre and purity of her voice offset and complimented the nasal quality of Maddy's.
What a great performance! Wish I had ben there. And Maddie Prior was revelling in it. She's such a natural and her voice is faultless. Thanks for uploading it!
I recently heard a song by the great folk singer Ralph McTell that was dedicated to Maddy and her fondness for dancing. It really shows here.
Where on earth is the wonderful Bob Johnson, not even a flash of.him , surely he was in this lineup . A brilliant guitarist and arranger much missed .

This is amazing. Really beautiful performance. I think that this is mimed as you say because Maddy misses at one stage and Gay stops singing before the track at another point. Great sound. Lovely!

Remember it's filmed with several cameras from several angles ... could easily be simply poor synching of sound with video files. Depends how much they paid the editor.
Bands that have "mimed" tend to do so for all the instruments too ... having recorded the vocals separately would make it darned hard for the musicians to time their playing for the predetermined timing. The strings and drums certainly look played live.
The band is immortal.....Maddy Prior has a voice .....40 years and still fresh.
Gay and Maddy will never "die an old maid in the garret." What a great twosome. Rest of the band were pretty good too.
"Take Her Out of Pity"--same theme and very similar words is certain verses. It always amazes me, the variations of some of the old folk songs.

That's got to be the best version of both songs I've heard! Although it has to be said, Maddy looks like she's having the time of her life, while Gay looks like she's having her teeth pulled....

Gay, who has a beautiful voice and who was an original band member, had been asked to help because Maddy was having trouble with her voice. Then she was told to keep inthe background and not draw attention to herself! No wonder she looked annoyed!

The first time I heard this song it was Anna McGoldrick singing it on Opportunity Knocks in 1969. And never heard it again until the Internet came along.

I was able to see them in concert for "time" in Austin, TX. They were awesome. Small venue.
Da** when did they play in Austin? I lived there for several years & am now just down the road in San Antonio. If I'd known that Steeleye Span was playing there I would have found some way to see them

I liked Gay's vocals on tracks(softer voice than Maddy) she did and thought she harmonised well with Maddy. if I was being replaced as lead vocalist by someone else I'd be pretty fed up!!!!

Mimed? That explains a lot. I was wondering why the vocals sounded exactly the same. I think I saw them on this tour in Atlanta, in 1996? Hard to forget Maddie's happy dance! I swear they both wore the same outfits, but I'l likely remembering it from this video? So wonderfully done!

We,ve grown old together and they have not l;ost any of their cutting folk sound.
Maddy always looks like she enjoys singing which is probably why her tone is always good.We were always told to smile during performances by our Music teachers.That said the two vocalists work great together no matter what the facial expressions are. Maybe Gay had something on her mind like The Electric Bill.

my mother 82 who i was listening asked me when doing a fry up on a Sunday and I asked if she knew what a garret was. She did even though from Ireland. Talk to ur old parents etc pls.

I was lucky enough to be invited back to steeleye's hotel in peterboro' for 'a Chinese takeaway for 30' when they played there in the 80s...lovely people...after eating and talking with them all I had a party with the roadies who told me they love working with the band because they pay when they say and folk music doesn't abuse the equipment like when they work for rock or reggae bands 😂

I saw this line-up in Adelaide (or Ipswich) and thought that although she has a great voice, Gay Woods wanted to be somewhere else. She looked miserable through the gig. And it isn't the record...They certainly were not miming when I saw them!!

I notice, that if you go on-line, more often than not this song is claimed to be of Irish origin. It almost certainly isn't. Its more likely Scottish. Not all that unusual as Irish folkies have a habit of claiming virtually everything as Irish. The song found its way into the Irish repertoire possibly through seasonal agricultural workers from Donegal who used to come over to Scotland at harvest times for work.
I've heard a very good version of the song by an Irish band which pretty much states that clearly. The only problem I have with this version is that it sounds a bit anglicised. When my Ma and her pal, Aggie, used to sing it the first line went "Lang be it said by ma faither and ma mither, 'tae gang tae a waddin is the makins o' anither.' " and it went on like that in pretty broad Scots.
Having written that one of the earliest printed sets of lyrics appear to be English from the 17th century.
