  • Steeleye Span performing 'The Elf Knight', from the album 'Time'. Available to buy from the Park shop here: parkrecords.com...
Released in 1996, after a seven-year hiatus. The impetus for the album was a 25th anniversary reunion tour the year before. In some ways, the album represents a revival of Steeleye Span. After a 16 year period during which the band released only three albums, the band entered a more productive phase that continues down to the present.

Steeleye's line-up has continually evolved and that has broadened their range. To be applauded. Only one constant, the incomparable Maddy Prior. I'm 73 and Maddy is two years older. Hope I go first. Can't imagine Steeleye without Maddy. I love her voice and her joie de vivre on stage.

Horkstow Grange (1999) had Gay Woods, but not Maddy, who was having vocal issues at the time.

The are several very fine performers who do justice to this song. But Steeleye Span is my favorite performer. Something about the musical instruments and their beautiful voices as they tell the story just puts me right there in the song. Thank you Steeleye Span.

! !! This is very nearly the (Scots) version I learnt - you can tell by the mangled rhyme/meter where English can't quite patch the missing dialect - but is so unfindable I'd begun to think I'd hallucinated it. Thank you, Park Records, for making this public, and Steeleye Span for singing it!

The thing with traditional songs is that they were verbal. People who couldn't read could remember them. We need to keep this tradition. If things go belly up word of mouth is all we will have. Songs are a way of carrying memories on.

This is the first time I've met this song and, yes, this is a great version of a good song.
BUT from a law and order and criminal justice point of view, there is so much wrong with it, I scarcely know where to begin. Like, 7 kings' daughters missing? No one thought to investigate, no one thought to warn other kings' daughters about going off with strangers?

I've forgotten most of what I knew from that time period, but I think those daughters were most heavily guarded by older women and strong 'human' knights. Counter to the song, they were probably taken away by the king's least favored knight? And while it isn't an 'absolute', most disappearnces are voluntary runaways with someone well known, but least expected, like the 'son of the cook, in the palace of the duke'. (a 1960 vs of cinderella) I'm sure a 'hunt' was sent after the missing daughter. Singularl as I don't think the elf could handle more than one spoiled/whining/bitching/screaming princess at a time. However, it appears here, that Lady Isobel has been paying attention, and lays a trap for yon knight on the hill. Best part of the song, IMO. Just so you know, I also have pondered the logic of so many women disappearing and nothing being said. Don't be fooled by prime TV. It happens a LOT in modern times. I wonder about the elf knight's horn, if only his intended victims can hear it? I am looking for written lyrics so I can better 'investigate' her 'plot'. I get caught up in the music and certain phrases so I don't hear 'all' the clues. At one point I thought somehow Lady Isobel had 'magicked away' the elf knight's horn. But I listen again, and for some reason that I haven't solved, he can't blow on his horn. Again, did Lady Isobel use 'human female' magic to silence the horn? I have got to record this song, and somehow silence the music! I swear Steel Eye Span used magic here! And I want to mow down all those .... flowers that keep getting in the way of how she lures him to her. OMG!!! WOULD SOMEONE MAKE A MOVIE????!!!!!!! I no longr go to the 'cinema' because just one good movie turns into a bevy of bad clones of the original. But I'd be first in line to see THIS one. IF the music is loud ONLY when no one is speaking. LOL Sorry for being so long winded. Writing is my hobby, and I can't submit for publication ... because I don't know how to say THE END. I'm not on FB very often, but if you want to drop by and further discuss the elf knight, or other equally mesmerizing and convoluted music, Dmf Forrester
