Circa 1985, Portland Oregon. My mom was a hopeless romantic, she could have stayed in the 60's. Who wouldn't ?! Took her to see the Kinks, one of the best days of my life !!
Great band in concert fer sher
The Kinks, one of the most brilliant yet criminally underrated rock bands ever.
Ray Davies has never received the credit he deserves as songwriter, and a singer. I saw them live three times in the late '70s & early '80s, and was never disappointed.
Respectfully, asking why would you use the word. 'criminally' when describing the Kinks? There wasn't a crime committed.
@@gregorykunz9017 And lol he did receive a knighthood in 2017 , thats some credit
@@gregorykunz9017 He was saying the public and critics were the "criminals!"
@@johnp5351 Such a long time to wait! I love that he said he thought about not accepting, but he thought his parents would haunt him, and he already had enough problems!

I get it now. Thank you for clarifying his statement. Great song
Dave kicks ass on that guitar
I consider myself very fortunate to have seen them live. One of the all time greatest rock and roll bands to date
I sat in the front row in Melbourne in June '64 at the Beatles concert, then the Stones in Feb '65. Sorry to say never saw perhaps the greatest band of them all: the Kinks; certainly the greatest song writers. And Yes Dave Davies is underrated as a Guitarist!. I still might get to see them as they are the only 60's Band with all members still alive!
Saw them in the late 70s at the Milwaukee Arena. It was right after they released Low Budget: still one of my favorite albums. Went with my girlfriend but most of my buddies didn’t want to go. Didn’t share my appreciation for them. They didn’t even sell out the relatively small venue but they put on a great show. My girlfriend became a fan.
Saw the Kinks four times and saw Ray on his solo tour twice. 👍👍👍
The Kinks were such a special voice through the 60s & 70s. IMO Ray is a master songwriter, eclipsing Lennon/McCartney and the Glimmer Twins. Waterloo Sunset was the quintessential pop song of the era. BTW, Dave is an under-appreciated guitarist. He was the first one with metal chops.
Me, too. I saw them in 1977 opening for Hall & Oates. In my humble opinion I think the line-up I saw was backwards….Hall & Oates should have been the opening act for The Kinks.
While everyone else was raving about the Beatles & Stones .... This Band.
Beatles or Stones they asked. Kinks, I replied.
@@fellowtraveler4358No doubt!!
Celluloid Heroes will always be my favorite Kinks song.
Kinks are the best band ever take that to the BANK
I'm from London... I now live in Norway. Whenever I hear the opening chords of Waterloo Sunset it fills me with a nostalgia that I can't describe in words.
One of the greatest songwriters and rock n roll singers of our time. I love Ray Davies and Dave Davies since the early sixties. I still love their great lyrics and songs. Fascinating, unique, and genius in composing. I'm now 70 years old but still love the
Kinks sound. I'm so grateful to grow up with their great music . Celloloid heroes are still around. They are legends of talent in our time like the Beatles, Rollings Stones, Petula Clark and many others. Long live rock n roll.
I have loved them my whole life too, I think I was about eight yrs.old dancing to All day and all of the Night. My opinion they are better than the Beatles.
Oh! Yeah! They were dissed in LA by yahoo club owners! Like the Beatles they told interesting stories that are now timeless!
I totally agree !! We have seen them quite often in our `BEAT CLUB `on Saturday afternoon!! Greatings from Köln
The kinks are England. ...I feel in my soul their Englishmen, their understanding compassion a musical mastery I'm unable to forget .. wherever I'm at I'm looking at Waterloo sunset
I'm not like everybody else. The Anarchists anthem.
You may not hear him mentioned amongst the all-time guitar masters, but Dave Davies is as good as any of them!
Always played for the song, and great tone.
One of the most underrated guitar player. And he was what? Sixteen when they recorded their first son?
Stephan Arminski much agreed Stephan!
Johann Bogason
If not the greatest!
My theory is that if you want a short, concise solo, you need Dave Davies, George Harrison and Robbie Robertson. Lots of contenders for the longer jams, but these three were the best and concise
Among all the Kinks' amazing songs, this is one of the most affecting. Simply beautiful.
The best song
Agree!! Their best followed by Days
“To those who are successful be always on your guard ,success walks hand-in-hand with failure on the Hollywood Boulevard.” Words to live by.
You got that right
That is the take away line. I wished the hell I knew that in 1981 when i got turned on to this song. God I wish I knew what that meant back then
@@thomasmartin7425 hear hear
Beautiful look at the people at the shows from the 70's! I paid $8.00 to see this show. No phones, selfies, just focused on the music.
Dear Kinks, thanks for some of the greatest music of my lifetime!
Amen.
We lived during the greatest time of rock.
The Original Anti Establishment Band.....The Kinks.....True Rock n Roll Pioneers.....This Music is Timeless
Ray Davies was ahead of his time and the Kinks created so much great music that others admired for the style and substance. Waterloo Sunset is the most underrated songs ever created, layered with unique style and texture.
Dave's playing is both powerful and tasteful, very underrated even after all these years.
True!
In the 60s there was rebellion. There were the Beatles and innovative nest. So were the Rolling Stones and then there were the rebellious Kinks without apology. They paid the price and remained noncompromising and today they still remain the same. And that is why they are relevant to this day.
freaking great song by one of the most underrated bands and songwriters of the rock era.....as proven by number of views of this video
Daniel Isenstein
Because, they. never sold out to the Illuminati
Somehow I like this way. Its like an enormous secret that few care to know. This way when I run into another die-hard Kinks fan I feel like we have a bond of working class life and understanding the sentiments of these songs from Ray and the boys.
How old are you? I was there in that era and they were big! Real big.
Completely agree. They are on the same level as the stones and the beatles. They were banned from the states during the height of the british invasion because of a fight or something which affected their fame here. Clive Davis was a big fan and worked very hard to promote them here in the 70s
Ducks on the wall..my fav album
Dave absolutely crushes this opening! Epic badass!
But the camera work didn’t show it
legendary live album. simply a must for music lovers.
Don't think the director ever really figured out that Dave was playing the solos. Instead we get shots of Ray's back
Such a great song and Dave nailed it on that lead guitar... One of the greatest bands and song writers of rock...
those lyrics!
I always think the Kinks should have made it much bigger. But then again, their music is out there and whoever has ears should listen.
If the union hadn't banned them from America for 4 years during the height of Beatlemania, I think they would have made it much bigger!
They were their own worst enemies
Wow! Dave's guitar intro is incredibly fantastic!❤️😊
The Greatest songwriter in Rock N Roll History. Just listen to the massive Catalog he has amassed. Genius. WIsh they would of focused on Dave's solo in this song, tremendous.
Super live band, no computers, bombs, light show. just music.
Is anyone in 2024 loving this beautiful song????
I do,,, a matter of fact I play this song on open mic 🎤 🎸
@@markmalanaphy3374 excellent!!
Yes I do
FYI boys and girls, the late Tom Petty's favorite songwriter was Ray Davies.
There is a clip of Tom and the hearts on David Letterman doing the B side to All Day and All of the Night - “I Gotta Move’.
I love Ray and Dave Davies!
In a way, I'm glad that I overlooked the Kinks in their heyday; As a mature musician, I can appreciate them now much more than I would have as a young gunslinger.
Their songs are so well crafted it's insane.
Bravo Roc!
"You Really Got Me", "All Day and All of the Night" and "I Need You" . That distorted insane guitar! It was first time me or anyone else ever heard anything like it. God Save the Kinks!
So am i, not as any decent sort of guitarist but they've a massive catalogue to explore that awesome & has many of the bgest songs ever that never got airplay :D
@@michaelward9880 Anyone that has seen this video, I think is 🍀 lucky. This is the 2nd time I happened upon it. The band, Davies, they all looked like they were having fun.
saw them several times in concert. The highlight was this song. Being a lifelong movie fan - it touched every chord within me
I love this song! I love the lyrics. I’m not musician so that is my main draw to good music. Ray painted a picture with his lyrics. Beautiful!
Dave Davies wrote this song, though Ray wrote most of their songs. Dave was staying in Hollywood, even though the Kinks were banned from performing in the USA throughout the 60’s, into the 70’s. So sad…
Love the Kinks. One of the greatest. Underrated big time compared to other classic rock bands.
Anyone else think their live performance is better than the studio recording?
yes
Absolutely! They rocked live! Such a great experience!
Theo opening keyboard roll on One from the Road lays the groundwork for Dave’s blistering opening salvo. How many songs open like that?
Yes for sure
They were a great live band, better than the Beatles, to be sure. On a par with the Stones, without the Histrionics. Loved them.
Among the greatest of them all...This was recorded at The Providence Civic Center....Everybody's a Hero ....
I was there. I remember it like it was yesterday , even though it was 30 plus years ago.
@@MsSmitty9 Coming up on 42 years ago...Shortly before we opened Center Stage in East Providence....
I was in the crowd photo in the album sleeve...
The greatest! You can’t find songwriting like this anywhere. This song should be played at the Academy awards. My favorite band at 10 years old and still is ..None better!
Genius lyrics, nostalgic, smart, emotional. One of the best bands. One of their best songs!
My favorite part is when Ray and Dave lock eyes. We got this brother!
I'm not really old.. But old enough to remember when they still played this on the radio. This song oozes nostalgia
Saw the Kinks in Buffalo, NY 1981. Greatest concert I've ever attended.
So jealous, you didn't ask me !
Saw them in late 70s and they were great.
I believe you.
I saw them in Geneva NY at Hobart College and they rocked.
We always thought of them as a 3 chord band but when playing live they were phenomenal.
Saw them in Boston garden in 1981. Simply fabulous show.
I love those film noir heroes . Absolutely .
Saw them in MA in 1978, a great concert--wish I could remember more of it now! I wish we had tried harder back then to find the time and $ to see them again and again! They were very popular in New England. God Save The Kinks!
👍I used to crank this live album up in my car in the CCRI lot in Warwick not long after! 😄
Outstanding rock band. One of the first albums I got back in 1968. I was 13. Only regret was never seeing them
What an incredible band! Really great performance here, awesome solo from Dave
This is the best Kinks video song! Dave Davies killed it on the guitar! How I miss the simple days of being a teen! Not like the teens of today! There is nothing simple about it!
Vinyl heroes never die either!
Damn, Dave is a great guitar player, he’s killing it
The Kinks were the best at modernizing live versions of their late 60s and early 70s hits. I saw them in the mid 80’s and they seemed to be in their prime.
Thank you.
Kinks!
'Celluloid Heroes'
Never really die.
One of the best songs ever!
I like this version better than the original but I can't say why. Beautiful song!
@@Anca820 I think you can hear Ray's words way clearer on this recording, and hence it is more emotional
For those interested I'm opening up a bottle of wine, to the Kinks.
I had the double cassette of this album when I was a kid.. Played it a thousand times till I wore the tape out and couldn't fix it anymore. Got chewed a few too many times 😂
haah! :) I dubbed the vinyl to cassette and cranked it in the car with those sweet 6X9 read deck speakers 👆
~ KINKS ~
(one of the best/greatest bands- without a doubt)
One For The Road is an awesome live album! Ray, Dave and the band were in great shape.
Great song. Heart felt. Just think...many will never recognize the names he's singing about.✌
Ray"s lyrics were right up there with Dylan. Dave's guitar sound was the template for rock and punk alike. The Kinks set the bar very high.
I was there at The Providence Civic Center when this was recorded
Great song! 👍
Great band! 👍
This and Sweet Jane on Rock and Roll Animal are two of the best guitar intros ever done.
Yes!! Great observation!
The Kinks music, love, understanding and honesty of the human condition helped me through a rough period in my life. A song a bout many dead people made me feel alive! God bless them!
Yep still awesome 👍
Never Surrender Never Give Up ❤🎭
I saw this tour. It was so damn good. These guys were already legends at this point and kept getting better. The late 70’s to mid 80’s Kinks were a great resurgence.
Hello Kinks, I grew up listening to this wonderful music and I just wanted to thank you for it,was a happy time in my childhood. THANK YOU
Me too. I hadn't thought of what a part they were of my growing up until i read your comment and reflected.
My youngest brother is 8yrs younger than me. We've been Kinks fans forever. Best was seeing them at the Santa Barbara Bowl...not sure the year...1977, 78, or 79 ! I'm almost 70 now...still love 'em 💕
I was in Providence Rhode Island and saw this live. Over 40 years ago and will never forget it. One hell of a great concert
I saw them on Cape Cod around then, probably the same tour.
love this track. what an intro.
It's totally awesome!
Love this version and Dave's guitar work on this is great... Saw Dave about a month ago... We're all older but Dave still rocks and loves his audience and they love him...
Where?
Me too in NYC. God bless 'im
Dude, one day all the people will know how Dave Davies single handedly invented hard rock, heavy metal and punk rock with his simple guitar riif on You Really Got Me. JimiHendrix, The Ramones, Van Halen, Metallica testify to that.
@@coreyzimmerman9782 Sorry, was replaying this video again and just now saw your question. Better late than ever I guess. At the Genesee Theater in Waukegan Illinois it was in 2018.
LOU REED
Not sure how to put it. I'll try this: one of the livest live bands ever? 50,000 voices in a baseball stadium singing choruses together. I mean everybody! Always worked our way close to the stage before the Kinks' set. I'd turn and look around, everybody up and singing..la,la,la,la Lola, etc...
This concert was at the Providence RI Civic Center I believe back in 1981. It was a great show. Much better, simpler times back then. People behaved so differently compared to the whiney, complaining, sensitive and lazy idiots taking charge today.Wish I could go back to that concert!!!!
Great band, saw them several times and yes Ray stopped Lola a few times if we didnt sing loud enough.
The genius of Ray Davies and the Kinks Thank You SIR
I cover this solo with a harmonizer for the three part harmonies. Glorious song.. I dedicate it to the entire audience whenever I play it.
They are the Hidden Gem of Rock & Roll. Love these guys sense I was 12 Im 65 now. Some rockers nevers grow old just like me.
Great fucking song, one of the Kinks best❤❤❤❤❤❤ I’m going to be 70 years old tomorrow so I have been there from the beginning during the British Invasion 🥰🥰🥰🥰 I think they were underrated; Ray Davies and Dave Davies were and still are are brilliant!!!!!!
I saw them 3 times in concert back in the 70's. One of the greatest of the British Invasion bands and incredibly, almost forgotten today.
I saw them twice in the 70's and at this show at the Providence Civic Center, Providence, Rhode Island 1980, all three concerts were the best I ever went to. In my opinion the Kinks have always been greatly underrated and did not get the recognition they deserved.
@@vangogo6819 100% dead-on. They were probably my favorite of the Brit bands, along with the sadly, almost forgotten these days, The Animals.
@@mattconnor8677 I loved the Animals too, I seem to always have liked bands that weren't as popular as some others, fine with me.
Us Brits will never forget how good they are. This song..the lyrics are poetry ,but there's a lot of irony in the humour.Typical Brit.
The Best Jewel for all movie stars of that time is this beautiful song by THE KINKS
Truly one of the greatest rock and roll songs and a live performance at that. Wow people who could get out there, no gimmicks, music makers. I am such an old turd.
Sept.23,1979 Providence Civic Center What a show!
It was winter time in 79' me and my brother were still teenagers following these guys up and down the East Coast. For all I know we might have been in the crowd in Providence that night, saw them in Boston, Portland Me. Our hometown of New Haven also Madison Square Garden and some place in New Jersey and then the Polestra in Philly, what a barn that place was.All I know was those shows were some of the best memories I have as a rebellious teenager, what a freaking great band they were such great music and great shows.
Why they've never played Celluloid Heroes -- or Garland Jeffries' "35 Millimeter Dreams" at the Oscars is beyond me.
One of the all time under rated bands ever.
But I don't think that they give a damn.
That makes them so much more special.
Beautiful, silly and Bestest bands ever.
Loved them live. They included each and every one of us.
Not every band can claim that.
Then again, they are not like every other band.
Thanks guys.
Love their music. Ray the songwriter. Dave the best guitar riff player. Nice to see the brothers playing together again.
My favorite band
One of my all time favorites and I come back here often to watch and listen to this... I still get ticked that Dave plays one of the best intros and lead guitar ever and they can't keep the camera on him.
They never seem to! The fans still joke that Ray always paid off the camera men to keep the camera on him! Sure seems that way!
I absolutely agree about Dave Davies. I even got his autograph once and Ray kissed me on the cheek.
Didn't see the Kinks at this show in Providence, but I did see them a few miles up the road in North Attleboro in nice little community theater, in 1971. Maybe the best concert I've ever been to venue wise.
Oh yes... Play it Dave!!!
Dave Ray KINKS one of the best-
Great live version and daves solo is amazing!
This song is incredible.
The Kinks, Ray Davies, The Best. Love this song and so many of your other songs. I'm an ape man too.
Got to see them live on their last tour. It was for the Phobia record in 1993. Great show. Great band and I always thought that they were underrated.
Saw them in Knoxville the day after Ray broke his leg in rehearsal (84/85?).It was a Monday night, there were VERY few people in attendance. Ray stood there and sang his heart out. Of all the many various concerts I have been to,this was my favorite.
A truly great song performed by one of the greatest bands of all time ❤
Tremendous Live Version of An All Time Great Tune!
This is a truly beautiful song.
Vergesst nie diese wunderbare Band !!!
Dave has such amazing tone from that LP.
Fine song... Telling a wonderful story, great band!!!
What a wordsmith, little wonder why he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame!
Saw this show in Vancouver Coliseum 1980. I went to see Angel City (The Angels) from Australia, which were just breaking on the charts.
During intermission between the bands, people just rushed to the front. I ended up in between the two audience walkways right next to stage on the right inside.
I somehow met and ended up between two lovely ladies and hugging and kissing both through out the show. Beautiful memory. Never saw them before or after. Totally a magical evening. Dave would come out on the walkway and rip his solos. His sweat splashed all over us. Ray was awesome!. I only knew a couple of their songs, but by the end of the night was a fan.
a nostalgic melancholy masterpiece.
And Celluloid Heroes never really die...
Great musicians THE KINKS
