    Oblivion is one of my favorite games and this helped take me back to the good old days where the gaming community was much smaller. This era of Bethesda games were so vast, ambitious and buggy, it was always hard to tell what was intended, what wasn't, and what was leftover from development. Would love some more. Thanks.

      That’s what I’ve always appreciated about elder scrolls series. As the player you get first hand experience. Only for the next game, to set 100 years later, and the interpretation of the last game is taken completely out of context (or in the case of Skyrim, the thalmor, straight up took credit for the oblivion crisis ending). Also the books they write for the player to read are also not always true 😂

      For some reason that creepy pasta scared the SHIT outta me when I was like 9.Maybe it's cause morrowind was already kinda uncanny at times with all the weird characters who never moved and all the weird things they would say,and of course the music provides a certain vibe.I just remember seeing a video on that creepy pasta and then playing morrowind and being hyper aware of every NPC that told me to watch the skies.When it happened like 3 times in an hour....I was scared shitless.

    Honestly, I kind of like the idea that Glarthir wasn't entirely wrong, except he was suspecting the wrong people for the wrong reasons. With his conspiracy theory sort of behavior, I could see him being watched just in case he stumbled across or "made up" evidence of the Count's vampirism. That or he was being watched by the guard because they were worried he might end up doing exactly what he ends up doing and it just made things worse.

    12:27 "When the game was new a host of rumors appeared but they were eventually disproven with the release of the construction set, allowing players to look behind the curtain." I'ma stop you right there, Chief.
    Oblivion's Construction Set was available for download on RELEASE DAY, similar to how Morrorwind's PC release contained a disc for its Construction Set in the box. It wasn't until Fallout 3 that they started holding Construction Set/Creation Kit tools back until a period of time after retail release.
    I suspect that it's because they were still butthurt that in the first couple days, an industrious modder had inspected all the 3D textures in Oblivion's textures.bsa file, and found that the body torso texture that Bethesda had added to support female outfits that show skin, had inexplicably been drawn anatomically correct. This modder then went into the Construction Set, found the record for the 3D Mesh used for the medieval perma-bra wearing torso that the game uses when female characters aren't wearing any outer clothing above the waist, and modded it to overwrite that' mesh's 3D texture with the bare skin texture from the .bsa. This was how Oblivion's first topless mod got released before the game was even a half week old.
    Of course, the gaming media jumped on the story, and Bethesda countered with "Hey we can't be blamed for whatever 3D meshes third-party modders add into our game." The modder counter-countered with the fact that their mod consisted solely of a .esp file that was only a few KB large, and absolutely no new 3D Meshes or Textures, so it was using assets that shipped with the game. This was later proven correct by someone developing an Action Replay code for the X-Box version of Oblivion that duplicated the effect of the topless mod.
    And this was hot on the heels of the GTA San Andreas Hot Coffee scandal that had previously prompted the Entertainment Software Ratings Board to issue a notice to game developers and publishers that when submitting video games to get their ESRB Rating, they were required to disclose ALL content on the game disc that's relevant to the rating, even cut content that's not supposed to be accessible through normal gameplay.
    Since 2KGames distributed both GTA and Oblivion, the game was already on the ESRB's radar, and they asked 2K and Bethesda, "Hey, are you SURE you told us about EVERYTHING on the disc?" It was at that point Bethesda realized that they had maybe played down the blood and gore players may encounter during the Arena and Dark Brotherhood side quests, and put together a new video that more clearly showed the level of violence in the side quests. ESRB decided that Oblivion never should have been rated "T for Teen" and bumped it up to "M for Mature" with a few more content descriptors on the box. By that point, Bethesda had patched out the textures that started this whole mess, replacing them with Barbie Doll versions, so the "Nudity" descriptor was not required by the ESRB to be added.
    The next game that Bethesda put out on what I call the ElderStarFall Engine was when they made the modding community wait to get an official Construction Set/Creation Kit tool, a practice they've adhered to ever since. Could be a coincidence, but the timing suggests otherwise. Not that this stops the modding community, who have their own third-party modding tools that they simply adapt from whatever the previous game in the series is. In fact the author of the topless mod had used a Morrowind-era BSA Extractor that had been updated to Oblivion's new file headers to extract the contents of ES:IV's textures.bsa.
    (Yes, I know Bethesda has an official name for the engine, they change it every few years to try to hide the fact that it's simply been a series of incremental upgrades on top of the same tech that ran Morrowind.)

      Have you heard that he is in fact lorkhan, or at least the khajit avatar for lorkhan? They believe that after his heart was torn out and shot into the sea becoming red mountain, his body broken in half and throw into the sky(the two moons), yet still he did not die, for his soul took the form of a witty and clever khajit that was doomed to walk born forever playing tricks on the gullible and wise cracking something fierce.
      Since he has been in every major elderscrolls since Morrowind it makes him immortal and thus fills the requirements. However lorkhan actually became shor after his heart was torn out, where he created sovengarde as a reward to the wandering elnofey that stood shoulder to shoulder with him against Trinimac. So M'aiq cant be him, unless lorkhan was fragmented in soul as well as in body. Even then the khajit notion of lorkhan is wrong as Vivec proved the original promise of lorkhan (build me nirn and you shall have a deadric realm where even a god, perfect and timeless can ascend) once assumed to have been a cruel trick was proven genuine all along when vivec reached Chim a Post-Divine state above the gods after communing with the heart of lorkhan and learning the cosmic truth of all things within the tower wheel. A lore based 4th wall break. Anyways M'aiq is still some sort of upper being though since he is older than a khajit could ever be(perhaps M'aiq also caught the corpus and scored a swift cure from the neraverine!

    • @bodkie
      @bodkie 4 дні тому +3

      @GhostofJamesMadison I think Maiq is a Tom Bombadil type figure, but less removed from the world as a whole. He's not a god, he kind of just *is* and he enjoys appearing when big things are going down in the world, just to meet the people at the centre of events, for no reason but to take their measure in his own way by his own esoteric metrics.

    This is what makes Oblivion so much weirder than just the wacky NPCs and whatnot.
    The wealth of scrapped/hidden lore and gameplay scattered everywhere can be interpreted in different ways... the sinister vs normal vs joking elements that make up parts of the game.
    Whatever you want to call it, bugginess, jankiness, etc - it still lends to the intended scale of the game and Bethesda's creative ambitions

    • @shadesofslay
      @shadesofslay  9 днів тому

      Absolutely - and I think, also, it creates that totally unique and charming vibe. Nothing else has ever managed it (I mean, no other developer has been able to create this particular flavour - and, in fact, not even Bethesda themselves have managed to totally replicate it - each of their games are variations on a theme, in this way).

    There is also Sir Lazan in Skingrad; he never leaves his house ever and he tries to insult you when you talk to him, even challenging you to a duel.
    Other townspeople will sometimes comment on this with rumours and some say they are sick of him.
    If you go into his house you'll find 2 very odd things.
    Firstly the floor is higher than it should be, in other words your character floats in mid air rather than standing on the ground.
    Secondly, in his basement there is a take rat. It's non hostile unless you attack it.
    But if you DO attack it it's actually ridiculously strong because it levels up with your character the whole time. At level 30+ it can actually kill high level players.

When I was a kid, I remember running around the higher-class side of the imperial city when, out of nowhere, a golden saint runs up to some NPC and kills them and then gets taken out by the guards. I see the large time gap between your recent videos and the fallout 3 And i have to say your videos have immensely improved, these recent videos are great on their own and a huge jump in quality from the older content i skimmed, i hope you see your own growth and keep making more

      I read everything and at this stage I can still manage to respond to everything - that’ll get harder if the channel grows a lot more of course! So I’m glad you sent this now so I did get a chance to see it easily! I appreciate you taking the time to tell me you noticed this - yep, I had a combo of some minor health issues and also thought I might take some time to recalculate what I was doing… and it does seem to have worked, on my return - which I’m immensely pleased about! I do think life is all about growth and change and adapting, so yeah it’s been a bit of a journey so far and will continue to be! To me the audience is the most important thing - that, and my authentic love for this stuff. No hustle, just content - and making sure it gets better and better! Thank you for this, I really appreciate it. ❤️

    About the Beef topic. There are cows in Elder Scrolls- you can find them in Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall. So more than likely, the cows are bred and kept as livestock in High Rock- where the beef is shipped to all corners of Tamriel.

    • @AdamGothCroc
      @AdamGothCroc 16 днів тому +2

      And to add on, Bretons are highly skilled in Magics- So they probably use extensive frost magics to keep the beef preserved during the shipping process

    Great video! I wonder if myths like this are still possible, when hardcore gamers on twitch and youtube quickly play through everything within the first few days/weeks of release. On the one hand, I like videos like this, because I don't have as much time to play videogames anymore, but still love learning about the lore and world of TES. On the other hand, the more the videos go into the process of making the game and what unanswered questions all end up being the result of cut content or game-creation logistics, the less mystery remains...

    So... about the Champion himself
    He is a Shezarin. Not from the start, but he becomes one during The Knights of the Nine main storyline as he mantels someone who was already Shezarin
    But, here where an interesting connection comes in:
    Sheogorath is described in one of the books as "Sithis-shaped hole"
    And so the Champion (who is the avatar of Shezar, who is an aspect of Lorkhan, a direct creation of Sithis) steps in place of Sheogorath, "filling" the Sithis-shaped hole

If you visit him in the Applewatch at a very specific moment, you can save him and he won't die! And if you did all of this and he still dies, you weren't fast enough, and it's your own fault. I found something on the xbox version, it was a island off to the far left of the map
    You had to go out of bounds at the mages guild through the floating paint brush glitch
    My uncle found it through hours of just exploring, he showed me how he found it
    It was a infinite ocean after you get so far, he had water walking boots on so he could speed through
    Well after a while floating bits of grass would appear and they allowed you to stand on them then after a while of walking on floating grass you come across a castle with a single door
    It led to like some debug map or something but it wouldnt let you out so I figured it was a leftover debug asset

With missing lore added, cities and towns that feel like the proper size, and a dedication to getting the overall feel right for each game. Also the pet shop mods, the akiviri bear pet. I remember somehow glitching the control creature spell and controlling some of the npc’s dogs longer than the spell lasted and pretending they were my pets 😂 good times

      Different days eh? Good times indeed, though, as you say - I get super nostalgic for those times...

    I enjoyed this game very much, and the soundtrack is one of the best ever done. I hope they let Jeremy Soule do his thing on TES6

    39:53 Fairly sure this is a normal and intended failsafe present in Oblivion and Skyrim, probably in Fallout 3 onwards too. If an NPC can't find a valid navmeshed path to its target because it's obstructed, usually by another NPC, it can teleport to the next valid chunk of navmesh that should let it continue moving. Usually that means a very short distance that makes it look like it's juddering in and out of existence.
    How consistent this is though, no idea. It seems easiest to force in Skyrim with body blocking NPCs in narrow spaces, but the system is temperamental at best. I think it can also only occur if there is a theoretically contiguous navmesh path that the AI knows it's meant to be able to walk through but is being prevented from doing so by something it can't figure out, so it will teleport the NPC further along that same path but not move it crazily to some other navmesh tile that's far away or disconnected from the one its currently occupying.
