+Smooth McGroove I'm a Radiohead and a McGroove fan. What can I say, I've got good taste.
+Smooth McGroove 0100001
You're awesome too Smooth McGroove ♡
SMOOOTH!!!
Violin is a perfect rock instrument.
this music has been influenced by classical by genre derivative.
I wonder if any of these are real violins. Synth sounds these days are quite something.
@@keithklassen5320 These are real violines and cellos, i can smell :))
@@knenda1 Those are not violines. They play this song with a guitar played as a violin, with a bow.
Mayane Lopes like Sigur Ros?
Typical Radiohead: the first track gets you hooked, and slowly and surely, the album becomes addictive.
Mark Russell I love that! My favourite all time albums usually took a few listens, ones that you really have to take your time with.
Their best opening track is still 15 step
AMSP really grows on you the more you listen, I don't think I really grasped what us great about the album upon first listening, and now it's turning into a personal favorite of mine. This band continues to make magic
I’m moving up right behind Ok Computer. The more I listen to it the better it gets.
and then yuo sell it on ebay a week later for $5 or best offer
We're studying this song in school, the gradual build up through the events in the songs narrative, lyrics, and storytelling is incredible!
Me too! Big fan guiny. Good luck :)
Man I wish I had a teacher like yours back when I was in school. So have you learned much from Radiohead yet thanks to your teacher? :)

+David Dean Burkhart NOT THE BEES AAAAYYYYRRGGGHHH
Note: no-one has mouths to speak out, and they're expressionless, except those who will be burned: the man with the X on his door and the Inspector, and of course the bird who's trying to tell everybody (singing) but nobody is interpreting.
Did you ever see the back of a twenty dollar bill...on weed?
Thank you for this. I love reading the various interpretations of Radiohead lyrics/videos. They always make me think and adjust my metaphorical lenses.
Cheers mate. 👍
They have mouths, but its only displayed when making a gesture (same goes for the inspector). He keeps seeing strange and at time disturbing things yet does nothing, only to be burned himself in the end. I'm assuming that's the lesson.
Nobody has a mouth till the plot ask them to have it.
The only one who is required to have expression so the plot moves forward is the stranger. And only when it is necesary why? Because it is a stop motion video.

There is something about the crescendo of the strings culminating at the same time that the town leader has turned and raises his arms that is just so powerful. What a superb blending of audio and visual media - the whole really is greater than the sum of its parts in this case.

This was the first ever radiohead song I was introduced too. I've loved their work ever since. Thanks YT recommendations for actually doing your job 8 years ago lol.
If you are making snap judgements on your first listen of the song , you clearly haven't listened to radiohead before.
+J T Yes, well said. When I first heard the king of limbs I really wasn't pleased. In comparison to in rainbows I was let down. But it has really grown on me and I think all of their albums show a different side of them musically. Personally, I love this song and it is a good sign of what is to come. I am thinking this album will have an amnesiac feel but more refined.
+J T Truth.
+J T quoted for truthage. I hated King of Limbs at first, but then eventually grew to love it. Now it's my default Radiohead album I go to.
+J T shouldn't works of art be able to stand by themselves?
+Ambiguous Culture Typically with music more complex stuff deserves a few listens. I think it's hard to enjoy or make sense of a musical piece when you're processing it at new information and really have no idea what it's about to do at any given point. The music stands on it's own just fine but I've certainly found the music I enjoy the most takes a few attempts to digest it.
The composition of this song is incredible. The range of feelings it inspires, the tension of the strings, the child-like confusion of the bass, the war drums, and Thom's haunted but somehow familiar voice... it all combines into something truly amazing.
i love the higher pitched strings resembling elegance, but also anxiety at the same time. really, this song is a masterpiece, even for being so short. i love it, and i had no idea there was a video to go with it before this. bravo, radiohead.
And the strings flow perfectly with the rest of the song.

I became a Radiohead fan in 2002-2003. I really never thought they could make any song after Kid A that would impact me so much, especially since OK Computer is probably my favorite album ever, but somehow this became my favorite of theirs over the years? I feel like this is Radiohead at their literal peak in so many ways. Absolutely unbelievable.
OK Computer is where the lost the plot for me. Kid A was interesting, if super weird, but everything agger that was just self-indulgent electronic music.

+Jacob The Unicorn Very real. It was even in the news the other day.
Why is this a big deal who are radiogead
00:48 a reference to Lord of the Flies - The speared boar seen on the red building. The first red flag for what is to come.
00:56 the second red flag, concealing the truth. This actually reminds me of a biblical reference The Passover. This is when the doors of the israelites were painted with the blood of a lamb in order for the angel of death to passover. Ex. 12 v 8: "They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire". The inspector is literally a lamb to the slaughter.
1:06: Invites us to look at ourselves more harshly. It's a hard task to do.
1:16: When we do we realise that nothing is really as it seems. Especially if someone is trying to make you see things from their point of view. The children act like they're having fun but it's a dangerous make-shift teeter totter built over a pond.
1:22: 'Justice' based on moral/religious grounds. When religion and morality differ from region to region - what does it mean for justice to be served? Is it merely a (pagan) ceremony that looks/feels good to the crowds? It's become a spectacle to impress the world rather than unveil the truth. e.g.: Osama Bin Laden, Muammar Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein all killings seen as 'right' and 'just' in the eyes of americans; guided by the media, leaders, american morals, religious beliefs etc.
1:43: Another instance where the truth (a savagely slaughtered animal) is hidden, literally in a sheet of pastry. Can you swallow the truth?
1:55: Does embellishing the truth (with flowers) take away from it's reality? A touch on capital punishment. Jay Carney stated that the US has a fundamental duty to carry out executions humanely. However, doesn't the act of capital punishment itself fall short of humane standards.
The more the man sees through their tricks or questions their logic, the more the the mayor sees him as a threat to his power and desperately tries to persuade and move him along through the town.
2:13: Welcome to corporate america! I'd like to hear some suggestions on this one. But I think it has something to do with how the working class, just trying to make a living, are sheltered and closed off from the realities of capitalism and how the top level guys (ceo's, government MPs, presidents) are actually running the establishments of the country. They're blinded by chasing the dollar and the guy who has something to offer the big guys gets to lead the pack of little guys - no matter how unqualified they may be.
3:04 The wicker man - a film inspired by David Pinner's 1967 novel Ritual and centres on the visit of Police Sergeant Neil Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island have abandoned Christianity and now practise a form of Celtic paganism (wiki). Again, playing on morality in different societies (the end of The Wicker Man is also important here but I don't want to spoil the movie for those who haven't watched it). The inspector finds himself staring at the truth boldly in the face but still he overlooks it. How many signs does it take until you go with your gut?
3:33 Does going with the crowd and turning your back on the truth makes everything better, more scenic, right?
The style in animation is brilliant for two reasons: 1. It's based on Trumpton, a BBC show from the 60s. Could Donald TRUMPton be the next mayor/leader of the crowd? And how much of the truth will he embellish with flowers? 2. The use of playdough annimation. Playdough is malleable and can be moulded into anything you want it to be, much like the truth.
Does anyone know what the meaning of Jobe and the tomatoes is? Is this another biblical reference to Job (pronounced Jobe)? There is one interesting thing from the bible about tomatoes Corinthians 15v 38: "You could never guess what a tomato would look like by looking at a tomato seed. What we plant in the soil and what grows out of it don't look anything alike. The dead body that we bury in the ground and the resurrection body that comes from it will be dramatically different." Again the true nature of the tomato is revealed through time and a little digging ;)
1:13 is also a thinly veiled reference to "ducking", a medieval practice where a person who floated after being dunked in water was seen as preserving themselves with magic, and was then executed.

This film certainly draws from the original, 1973 movie known as "The Wicker Man," with its references to the Maypole, the participation of children in the horror of life in the Model Village, and the importance of the harvest (The Speared Boar, the apples, the sacrificed animal baked en croute).
But it's much more than a simple horror film or remake of a cult classic. Rather, it is an allegory for the banality of evil, the dangers of conformity, the turning of perceived outsiders into scapegoats, and how evil, not perpetrated by monsters and sadists alone, can be masked by seemingly meaningless activities and pleasantries (it may even come with a pat on the back). An example of groupthink, where conformity and narrow self-interest are valued over the welfare of others; a complete moral collapse.
And for me, the Inspector represents one's conscience. As he dutifully moves through his checklist, he becomes increasingly horrified by life in the Model Village, with the sight of the man locked behind a door painted with a red cross, the woman tied to the stake, and the children decorating the gallows with flowers. But, in the end, he is sacrificed by the villagers for his conscience.
Don't bother with "The Wicker Man" remake starring Nicholas Cage. He sacrificed his craft a long time ago for the big bucks of Hollywood. Vapid.
interesting.
+Ceili Jane Can you explain what the 'inspector's' role was? Why was he in the town? I've only seen the hilarious Cage version, so not familiar with the original story. Thanks !
+Ceili Jane well i think its playing into pagan sacrifice rituals and ho the inquisition was just a similar sacrifice ritual, the wicker man depicted rituals that still go on ceremonially in may queen festivals, in america its things like homecoming queen. They all go back to worshiping fertility.
+Emile Wilmar Certainly a large part of it.
+マクドナルドカイル In the 1973 movie, the Inspector is a policeman investigating the disappearance of a young girl. For me, in the Radiohead film, the Inspector represents conscience, apparent through his expressions of shock and appall by what he has seen in the Model Village.
This will forever be my favorite song from Radiohead.

+TheCelticTiger32 it's based off the film The wicker Man
+JOH It's completely terrifying. The so-called witch seems to be an officious person who just takes notes on a pad. As much as such people are arseholes I am not sure they deserve to be burnt to death. But the song is brilliant!

yea, what a show
Exactly what I was thinking at the end of the video x)
Just something to point out every clip deals with some way of dealing with a witch or execute a witch. If you want I can explain but tomatoes were considered poisonous back then and the seesaw was used to drown them while tied to a chair if they float they were a witch if not they were innocent, hanging, burning wooden frames and painting x's on the doors, while consuming raw food
Sorry the witch's were considered to eat raw food
Damn son, the more you know
Tomatoes were considered one of the ingredients in an ointment used to smear on brooms to make them fly.. crazy bastards :-)
Wow the scenes make sense now

Was searching this comment on the trailer
Thom took over the trailer
The man in the black suit is meant to represent a federal government worker who is assigned to evaluate the conditions of established towns within the country. This town revolves around the leadership of a cult leader who tries to make the village appear as "pleasant" as possible. Examples of this include when they place flowers on the gallows in order to beautify it. Low education/illiteracy is another topic in the video with an example in the misspelling of jobs as "jobes" at 2:23. The picture on 00:48 that reads "The Speared Boar" is a reference to Lord of Flies where a boar is speared by Jack and his followers, and later they place the head of the boar onto a stake. Adding this reference in the video implies that there is savagery in the town despite its peacefully appearance. The town folk are only putting on a facade to appear that they are fully functioning town by trying to do communal tasks to display their interconnections with one another. An example of this can be seen on 1:40 when the woman failed to prepare a meal by butchering a deer and trying to make it look like a pie. Alcoholism is also found in this video. Some of the villagers drink alcohol in broad day light, in public, and while they are working. At the end, all the villagers turn their back at the burning man which indicating that they do not want to see or acknowledge their crime. This act can be interpreted as showcasing nativism and the dangers that it possess for innocent outsiders. Luckily, the federal government worker survived in the end, which implies that the story will continue.
+Raul Martinez I think you're over thinking it. XD
+Raul Martinez yea it's all from the movie "The Wicker Man" from the 1970s. Such a great horror movie
nah man it's just a stop action summary of the wicker man.
+Raul Martinez why wold jobs be written on the side of apple crates though? one of the boxes has "jobe's" with an apostrophe, so I think the name is supposed to be Jobe, and it's his little apple business or whatever it is.
+Raul Martinez Cool assessment. My take is that as the towns people wave to the government worker as he is led along and observing what they do and then ultimately to his seeming end, they then also wave to us, the viewers of the video, as if to say you (we) are next after having seen the things they do. Very Radiohead-ish message there
Every Radiohead album has a feel to it in my opinion
Pablo Honey - A studio in late 90s Vancouver
The Bends - A suburbian home studio where many a jam session has been held
OK Computer - Walking through the streets of a semi-dystopian, lifeless city (kinda like the present day)
Kid A - A claustrophobic, small room where someone's gone mad
Amnesiac - See Kid A
Hail To The Thief - A highway just outside a major city
In Rainbows - Floating through deep space, having accepted your eventual fate
The King Of Limbs - A walk through an ancient European forest on a damp April morning
A Moon Shaped Pool - A grey, rainy day where all you can do it stare out the window
The King Of Limbs sounds about right
WE DONT TALK ABOUT KING OF LIMBS
Logan Katz Someone has strong feelings about that album
DarthDerposity king of limbs is there worst album
Logan Katz I think it edges out Pablo Honey just a little bit, but to each their own. I really don't think they have a bad album
Three of my favourites. Radiohead, Trumpton and the ( original ) Wickerman.
Absolutely!
Apparently, 3 of us are the only ones here to get "The Wickerman" reference. And the Stop - Motion animation is fantastic!
@@mosriteminioncause7741 Well..I also wrote a comment 6 years ago about it being basically claymation Wicker Man, but I guess nobody read it xD

Whenever I discuss time travel with my kids 2 things come up about going back in time:
1) the filth and stink
2) how careful you would have to be to not be denounced as a witch
I think in certain periods in history every day life would look terrifying to us because we would know where it was going.
Thumbs up if Thom yorke is still a cool cat!

I'm glad the little dude escaped in the end...
He's a witch. Witches don't burn.
+Tiago Seiler I dunno, I think the creepy macabre vibe they were going for was shattered when they showed that he escaped.
+Amelia Bee he escaped because he was a witch
+Dorothy B This is true. He turned me into a newt after all.
+Amelia Bee I am with you Amelia. It did kinda lose me with that happy ending. Didn't fit the rest of the video. I also didn't realize that witches didn't burn. I never have heard of that. I thought that is what they did with witches.

+aceinthehole1222 That is physically impossible for a human. If you've watched this 2 million times, you would have spent: 2000000 x 4 minutes = 8000000 minutes, which is about 133333.333... hours, which is 5555.555... days, which is about 15 years watching this video. This video has been out only 5 days. Correct yourself mister.
+Waldoh Who's to say he didn't have 1,112 devices... Maybe an awesome burn the witch screen montage playing nonestop since release... :D
Love how this album has all of its songs in the order of the alphabet (except for The Numbers, but that's only because the word The exists) and it sounds so good!
I just want to clear things up a bit. The politician who is burned at the end is still alive, you can see him in the far left corner when everyone is waving at us and they think he's in the burning robot thing. Also you can see at the end of the video that he in unharmed (which I wish they hadn't added because without it it would be MUCH cooler to find that he is still alive. The point is that he actually IS a witch. (hence the name of the song). I think the symbolism is that not only are politicians monsters. but the people who you least expect may be the worst people. What do you guys think
+Liter MC Also at the beginning they are conspiring about how they will kill him but I think the fate is selaed when he doesn't shake the guys hand
+Liter MC Eh, to be honest, I more saw the Politician guy as merely being a Representation of the Average Person {He's not really stated to be a Politician and unlike most other Radiohead Politicians {The Guy from Paranoid Android} he is not shown as being very evil or vile a Person. But my theory is that he is takes the view of an Average Joe looking in on a warped and shocking view of People who wildly follow Leaders, so Hitler for example had large followers. When he doesn't shake the Mayor's {The Leader of this Cult like group} hand, it is almost a way to show that he doesn't really care for the Mayor's beliefs. Similarly, he is shown to be very shocked by all of the events he sees. The People who the Politician sees are all shown as People who follow the Mayor. The Masked People are representations of Followers of people who go to Extremes and try to harm those who are against them. When finally, the Politician is put in the Wicker Man, it represents how people like the Mayor can be very very dangerous to the Average Man and can easily cause harm if merely ignored. However, when the Politician is shown alive but slightly dirtied by his experience, it is an almost positive way of saying "No matter what, Humanity will prevail". So in my eyes, the Villagers are all evil, the Politician is a representation of Innocent People.
+Aaron Thomas I agree with you
+Aaron Thomas Just saying, the Paranoid Android video was made without any input from the band except that the version given to the artist to make a video of had no lyrics.
Pleb Detector Oh. Thanks for the fact! But you still get my standpoint, in that unlike when sometimes Radiohead mentions Politicians in there songs, it's usually negative.
This band sounds good. I hope they become successful one day.
+Random Idiot No chance :)
theyve been successful since the 90s

Typical Radiohead, they bring out something new and on the first hearing it's like " hmmm, sounds a bit like something they have done before.....not outstanding...", ah, but then after a few listens, you find the brilliance behind such a simple sounding tune. From Toms gentle yet menacing crooning to the Choppy Staccato violins slicing and dicing away......Thumbs up Tom, you never let me down in your genius Inventiveness when it comes to Music.
+Mega80schild *Thom
+Mega80schild Same. Been humming it at work.
couldn't have said it better. they have the same effect on me. pretty much anything I end up absolutely loving sounds mediocre the first time I hear it. only after it starts to become familiar, and leaves a mental imprint on my brain do I start to fully appreciate it. at least when it comes to more complex compositions. on the other hand, I instantly knew I loved many of their more simplistic songs from the bends and ok computer.
+K. Rootes
I love the crescendo at the end of the song. I'm a huge Wicker Man film fan also so it's a chicken dinner for me. I've found myself waking up 6am to listen to the album as the sun rises. The wife's not impressed to be fair.
+Mega80schild Worst thing is, if they tried a completely new thing people would say it sucks because it doesnt sound like their previous work
Hillary?
+Mark Dice well, they did write Hail to the Thief and that dealt with much of the Bush administration. They are very political and extremely dedicated to the environment. Edit: I just realized too (and this could be irrelevant but as cryptic as Radiohead is...) the fact it starts and ends with a chirping blue birdie...

BURN THE WITCH #0.8
LET'S GO !
Such a nice "Normal" town!
Wish they were all like that.
Behavioral results of Exodus 22:18
omg i clicked the numbers and the video ended
what is this sorcery O.o
the new normal is terrifying
Sarcasm dripping heavily from every word
It's interesting how you only see the mouth of the lady in the house whose door is being marked with an X (symbolises witch) and then also the town inspectors mouth when he is being burned alive. The bird at the beginning and end is oblivious to the goings on in the town so the mouth is shown. To me I guess this means that all the other towns folk, as if possessed by something unseen, won't speak out against whatever strangeness is occurring in the town, labelling any outsider or whoever tries to speak up (lady in house) as a witch, hence burn the witch! I guess this makes an important remark about our society and how important it is too communicate and shed light over the way we we live, in order to keep things fresh, otherwise what's left in the dark may stagnate and be left un challenged, someone may take advantage example being the mayor who could be likened too a cult leader who has the control over the rest his people never being challenged... mouths shut. Spooky and awesome song!
Olly Azgtraz and you're thinking is exactly why Radiohead is what they are for us all. Thanks and take care

...or it's The Wicker Man, which it is.
@@archivedaccount2049 could be. I heard it was about Muslims and our fear of them born out of social media and gossip we are surrounded by.
I was meant to see them but then Manchester arena got blown up by a terrorist. So we seen them a while later at a different venue. (Amazeballs!) Although burn the witch was the latest single. They didn't play it. I think because of the song's meaning and the situation at the time. What do you reckon?
@@amandah5478 I read that the song was first worked on during Kid A's production (according to Wikipedia) but the first evidence of it appeared later on: thekingoflimbspart2.com/lyrics-2/3352-2/ . Given that Hail to the Thief was largely a Take That at Bush/Blair era politics, that interpretation makes sense.
How many of us have been here multiple times.. and no matter how loud.. still turned the music up at 3:00?
The businessman visits the town where his commodity appears to be selling well. The man in the esoteric looking clothing is the charismatic preacher type, with folks gathered 'round him at the start. The preacher takes the businessman for a walk about town, luring him to the wicker man. The people of the town, in solidarity about their mutual hatred for the influence of big money, rally to burn him. Little do the townspeople know that the preacher and the businessman are simply two sides of the same coin. Their solidarity in anticapitalist sentiments become their opium so that they both don't notice the businessman escape and now have further trust in the preacher. This is the nature of the relationship between the banker and the politician. One makes a fake show of burning the other two garner support, only to perpetuate the cycle.
Wether that's the meaning behind this video or not, that's actually really clever
+James Hansen That actually makes a lot of sense.

*LYRICS:*
Stay in the shadows
Cheer at the gallows
This is a round up
This is a low flying panic attack
Sing a song on the jukebox that goes
*Burn the witch*
*Burn the witch*
*We know where you live*
Red crosses on wooden doors
If you float you burn
Loose talk around tables
Abandon all reason
Avoid all eye contact
Do not react
Shoot the messengers
This is a low flying panic attack
Sing a song on a sixpence that goes
*Burn the witch*
*Burn the witch*
*We know where you live*
*We know where you live*
thanks
+Ruff Ruff Thanks, but does it make any sense?
:)
+Bomis this song is about authority. "stay in the shadows, cheer the gallows" means dont get out of line and cheer the atrocities we make, "obey the system!".
low flying panic attack i think is a double entendre, because is a panic attack(when people dont respect the authority) and is a low flying attack, an expression for helicopter military attacks in which they fly low and shoot. burn the witch would be something like "hate the ones that dont act accordingly".
but thats just my enterpretation, of course
+Raphael Mees low flying does not mean helo attack it would mean being under the radar, so again doing something in the shadows that is not readily seen.
2:34 I really love this part. HIs voice is soo fucking good

People hating on this should consider that Radiohead are more than just a "band". They are not trying to please a market segment for a large label. Go back to the Bends and Ok Computer...I remember people thinking Paranoid Android was shit lol. These guys are doing what they like. no one is forcing anyone to get on board. They do write very intricate music, not everyone can relate to it and that s fine by me.

Gettin' a real Moral Orel vibe from this.
+Triple-Q Exactly what I was thinking! It's got a similar animation obviously but also the theme
BABY
+Triple-Q Probably because Moral Orel was inspired by the same animation that inspired this. Moral Orel definitely didn't invent that aesthetic.
+Triple-Q In the 1960s the BBC made a stop motion animated series called Trumpton, which seems to have been the main inspiration behind this.
Trumpton is probably a better example. It was a children's show that I used to watch that uses similar models and animating techniques like in this video.
Without doubt one of Radiohead’s greatest bits of work. .stunning !
Tamest episode of motel orel ever
