Nobody has a mouth till the plot ask them to have it.
The only one who is required to have expression so the plot moves forward is the stranger. And only when it is necesary why? Because it is a stop motion video.

I became a Radiohead fan in 2002-2003. I really never thought they could make any song after Kid A that would impact me so much, especially since OK Computer is probably my favorite album ever, but somehow this became my favorite of theirs over the years? So if you survived, they burnt you. Either way you died. Yes. That's EXACTLY how it worked. That's because they didn't really think you were a witch. Yorke's voice almost literally soars over the black keys and sharpish orchestral notes. This is one of the band's finer late productions. It is remarkable that nearly 30 years since they burst on the music scene, they are just as relevant, if not more, than at any time.

    Burn the witch
    Burn the witch
    We know where you live
    Red crosses on wooden doors
And if you float you burn
    Loose talk around tables
    Abandon all reason
    Avoid all eye contact
    Do not react
    Shoot the messengers
This is a low flying panic attack

It's simply talking about the times back then.. When people were walking around looking for "witches". "Stay in the shadows, cheer at the gallows, this is a round up" That's simply saying the way people had to be because they didn't want to get assumed as a witch. Of course, people would "Burn the witch" because they don't want any of their witchcraft to do any harm to them. There's always a reason for worry as it says in the third stanza. And all in all, know that you yourself might not be as it may seem. Sometimes, being in the shadows would be better off than being considered as a witch. (This is only my interpretation. there are other ways you can look a it)

    • @InTheBeginningTheUniverseWas
      @InTheBeginningTheUniverseWas 7 років тому +33

Evgeny Petrov oh sure. This song has meaning, it's very much literal: witch hunts. But in modern day context. The whole song is about groupthink and mob mentality; the concept that people put together act differently as a group than as individuals. To some extent they lose their individuality because they are reluctant to say something that doesn't fit the groups status quo, and so they conform to be the same as all the other group members. You end up with stuff like witch hunts, people wanted to blame disease on something because they had no real remedies or preventions of it, so they blamed 'witches' and basically slaughtered people who weren't 'normal' enough, like older widowed women.
Nowadays we do the same to migrants; blame them for taking jobs etc and so 'hunt' them (deporting, closing borders etc). The lyrics of this song 'Stay in the shadows / Cheer the gallows' are calling upon group members to not challenge social norms and too support prosecuting those who don't.
Hope that helps you understand it :) It is of course just an interpretation but it fits well and it demonstrates a very important message.

The meaning is: we all keep our mouth shut when we see injustice, and we look away when the massas exclude those who cannot defend themselves, without realizing WE can be the one who ultimately will be burned at the stake, and the rest of society will also look the other way then. If you don't speak out against a murderous system, the system could murder you. Your own apathetic attitude will eventually come back to you like a boomerang.
