As someone with major anxiety issues, seeing Thom even just show up for this show is such a breath of fresh air.
It's nice to know that we still exist.
Wholeheartedly agree.

all your insipid hope aside: I think the truth is, is that this is a being/person who is sucking your blood life, bit by bit without you entirely knowing you know it happens. But really, breaking it down, this person thing doesn't represent what you are absolutely dealing with to a hundred percent; they are actually not those people you think ; instead, are murderer activist liers who take what they can from your good and leave barely a morsel left for you, in actuality... the plus side, is that I'm here. Thom makes me feel like it’s ok to stutter and be afraid of talking to people.
it is. You only need charisma and great work to support you
most people are afraid, we/they just hide it well or have a persona to almost fool yourself until you get home, its fine :)
It's more than ok. People are largely terrible. You're a strong and charismatic survivor with a good store of common sense at your disposal. Keep going like you're going.
oh, and by the way, I stutter sometimes too. Some of the best people I know do as well. They are usually sincere, dedicated and passionate. I never had problems attracting girls. We all have our insecurities and weaknesses. it's just that everyone has his own way of hiding it.

"Hail to the Thief" is my favorite Radiohead album. I know I'm in the minority on that one, but I just can't stop listening to it. "There, there" and "Where I end and you begin" are so beautiful as are the rest of the tracks. If you're not familiar with the album I highly recommended it.
Aside from Ok computer which is legend status, Hail to the Thief is their best album.
As an album it fails, but it contains the greatest work Radiohead ever produced.
Pretty cool album, and love it's angry and sort of political aesthetic. Wish they hadn't put so many songs on it though.

Notice just how Stephen adjust his whole body language and presentation as soon as he sees Thom:
1. Thom walks in with unbuttoned blazer and hands in his pockets.
2. Immediately, Stephen unbuttons his own blazer and puts his hands in his pocket also.
This, is a clever and a great way of creating empathy to make sure the other person feels welcome and familiar.
Seen a lot of interviews with Thom and he isn’t the easiest of guests, but these two are really good together. Reflects more on Stephen as a genuine fan and interested party.
Colbert comes across as authentic and interested. Why wouldn't he be in the company of musical genius and all around unassuming guy Thom Yorke.
I love how the band didn't play Radiohead's most popular songs. Instead they played The national anthem and A wolf at the door. Impressive.

Lol it's TRUE. This title literally sounds like a Radiohead song.
“What’s the significance of the title Anima?”
“It was a pretty word”
Thom Yorke 10/10
It's something about sleep apparently. Thom said he read about 'Why we sleep'
Just heard Thom saying on an interview that the word 'Anima' is an Italian word for the soul
In Spanish it means to encourage
There's meaning behind it, but i don't think he felt comfortable going into it too deeply on a primetime chat show. The Zane Lowe interview he did is more real.
In jungian psychology it's the spirit of the feminine or something. But according to Thom, he picked it because it was pretty. So...it's just pretty.
i love how the crowd goes in silence when thom is talking
his shyness and his mannerisms remind me so much of myself. i love him so much
Thom literally can’t say anything without getting deep. He could read from an instruction manual and it would sound deep
Right? 😂😂😂
“Yeah, but step 3 has nothing to do with step 4.
How can I relate if theres no meaning behind this, just a bunch of fragments of information interconected but no meaning value after all”
Don't underestimate instruction manuals.

I'm almost 40. I've been aware, and a fan, of Radiohead since, like, 1996. I have NEVER witnessed Thom Yorke speak to any degree since that time until now. This is incredible

One of the most genuine conversations I've seen on late night
He seems like such a genuine, beautiful person... and so intelligent. I wish more people in the music industry were like him.
I wish more people were like this, period.
He is a true artist and seems to be an emotional and emphatic person
They don't want people like him in the music industry
You don't get that way without experiencing tremendous pain and learning from it
You should look up STEVEN WILSON.
This is 100% honest and not a fanboy comment, but seriously, I really feel some kind of warmth in my heart when Thom smiles and has a good time. It's weird, I truly wish nothing but the best to a person I do not personally know.
That is 100% a fanboy comment. No one outside of a fan and his mother would say that.
Yes! It's a beautiful feeling, and it makes sense given the effect his music has had on so many of us. He was just having fun when Colbert asked him if his songs were little animas he sends out into the world, but I think that really is a good way to look at it. For over two-thirds of my life I've had his songs triggering my brain to release the same sorts of chemicals that are behind our sensations of familal and romantic love, and because I do feel very bonded to this music that's an extension of him, I also really care about him as a person despite our being strangers. Plus he just presents himself with such genuineness and a great sense of humor that makes him very lovable to me. I think he's truly happy with all that he's doing in his life right now, and that makes me truly happy as well.

There's nothing more English than being in one of the most important bands of the last 25 years, and yet still be so modest and shy and low key about. An American rock star might come out and get the crowd going and big themselves up and act cocky. Its such a different mentality. Thom embodies that perfectly here.

Comments to Thom Yorke interviews are always the same, everyone assumes the man will be miserable and depressing but then he never is. Even in his older interviews where he seems more snappy, he's just asserting himself when he feels it's necessary - Thom figured out the media early on.
He was always polite and gentlemanly, he was just honest and vocal when they asked baited or stupid questions and I love that about him. He spoke once about a Lou Reed interview where he was acting the same...telling the interviewer to stop asking dumb questions - Thom's words were "You've got Lou f'n Reed sat next to you and you're asking him that?"

My heart- just love Thom Yorke so much. His heart has always been in the perfect place. His mind just moves too fast to be able to deal with the real world in a way. He’s a genius.
His personality shows: you don't have to be charismatic or sort of in your face all the time, to just be yourself and give up a facade you're trying to pull off. Heck, his album they mention here is about the same thing. A fake Twitter persona. Truly one of the best and smartest musicians that we're lucky to have!
"...they're gonna take us off the cliff with them, and as they do it they're saying it's the will of the people." Great quote.
“Cliff edge” is a term of perception though. Someone who is pro EU would describe it as such. Someone who is anti would describe being part of the EU negatively. Ultimately, in a democratic society you do have to follow “the will of the people” whether you like that decision or not. It sucks to be on the losing side, especially when the chance of making amends isn’t going to come in a few mere years, but that’s the reality of democracy.
@@ShellysAshes The problem might be to approach democracy as a sport I think. The 'losing side' will be everybody, or the 'winning side' will be everybody. Thinking that winning or losing when talking about the future of a whole country (and many countries maybe) is about being with 'the majority' (50, 60 pct) is a particular point of view, not the best in a democracy I think, because you still have >40pct of the people disagreeing on such an important subject. As an external bystander, I agree that there is a need to go through the process of brexit, because not doing it at this point, could break the system even more. But in the mid-term, the people might find themselves staring at a very miserable situation after leaving. Pro-EU? Anti-EU? Pretty soon that will be irrelevant, but the problems might continue and get even worse, so everybody will lose; or things might go well, and everybody wins. Maybe I am circling too much, but my point is that there is no 'sides' really
@@ShellysAshes Well said. I agree
@fillbrin it's been pretty conclusively shown that the "sides" in all this consist of, on one side, rational, concerned citizens who understand how being part of a larger union gives a mostly harmless, increasingly irrelevant country vastly more influence and opportunity in a hostile global marketplace, and on the other side, obscenely rich, privileged, tax avoiders who have weaponised the insecurity and/or racism of a depressingly large disenfranchised subpopulation, into helping them force a blatantly self-destructive manoeuvre through parliament, in order to continue being able to shield their hidden wealth which the the EU was about to stop. The majority of people on both sides will lose big time if it happens, it's only the sociopathic gazillionnaires at the top who will be fine, but then they'll also be fine if it doesn't happen, just not as fine as they feel entitled to be.
I loved the quotation..although I'm not British or American..this quotation works for a lot of other countries as well.
Doesn’t have the persona of self importance like a lot of musicians of his caliber. Seems like a pretty humble character .
There are not many artist of his caliber. As a young teen I was into Pink Floyd a lot then I got into electronic music as I started raving. Radiohead brought me back to rock.
He is a genius... Love him and all of the members in Radiohead until the end of my life.
That was an awesome interview, really enjoyed that
This man brought us 'OK Computer' and I will forever adore him for that ❤️
Liam Lennon , I still remember buying that cd on the day it came out. I was living in Germany at the time and had a couple of free Hours at school, so I took a bus into the city to buy it. Came back to school and everyone asked me what I bought and when I told them, they said: “Oh, the Creep guys? Aren’t they a one-hit-wonder?” 😂
I love how they are always changing and progressing. They are one of only a few bands that I will pay today's ticket prices and go to an arena and see. Also, if I happen to catch them twice on the same leg of tour, half the setlist (usually around 25 songs) will have changed. When Colbert asked him about REM, my first thought was Thom playing The One I Love on the electric piano leading into Everything In It's Right Place when I saw them in Atlanta in 2012. They introduced Identikit on that tour as well.
And In Rainbows
Not only him. Other members also did a great job.

Perfectly awkward. Actually, Thom almost looked relaxed a couple of times. Stephen has a good way of helping with that.
Stephen is amazing on working through the awkwardness. Maybe because he was awkward himself in his youth.

Thom has certainly improved a lot in terms of interview awkwardness compared to early in his career
The two both seem more introverted than you'd expect for a celebrity that performs publicly, but in a good way. They seem to be very comfortable together.
@@mightyone3737 yeah exactly. Also i dont feel like Thom is actually awkward. If you just treat him like a normal person (as seen here) instead of reacting like "damn ur awkward" you will find that he's a pleasant person to be around and nothing about having a conversation with him is actually weird. Wow. Had no idea he would come on a show like this. It’s amazing to see how more comfortable he’s gotten over the years. He has such a brillant mind yet gentle soul. The Lennon of our generation imo.
Lol, no. Lennon was an asshole.
Desmaad And Thom wasn’t in the past? Radiohead nearly broke up because he was an asshole. Obviously he matured but I was speaking more in terms of their mind for music and art in general.
He did not seem comfortable to me, just brilliant.
@@Desmaad You've learned from the master, obviously.
@@IzDawg813 Theres a difference in being the egotistical asshole in a band and being the kind of man who beats women and refers to his child as a 'whiskey mistake' in public. He was a crappy person in the truest sense of the word.
siiiis, i was smiling all along. thank you for that. thank you so much.
Returning to this after not seeing it since it aired, is still just as inspiring. The depth of these two was brought out in a unique way thst is uncommon in late night format. I'd love to see more interviews like this one!
Thom's music has been a comfort to me during difficult times and made me feel less alone in this isolating world. It's nice to see him much more content and happier these days.
See, I believe you and it seems believable. But when I see someone commenting the same the sentiment under the video of someone like i dunno travis scott or something and they go your song kept me from killing myself under the videos like butterfly effect I go like what on earth in that song spoke to your soul?
stop being a victim and take control of your life
@@ShihabBigBoss I see your point. I personally cannot stand Travis Scott or music of that ilk but people can enjoy that kind of stuff differently. Taste is subjective and I can't pretend to know what music speaks to every individual because that would be arrogant.
Then again, it is quite perplexing how some people can derive meaning from songs that sound totally empty & soulless. 🤷♀️
😜 Radiohead 🕊️
“Luminous Green Onesies” - The title of the next Radiohead album.
would love that
Thank you for the music, Thom. So fantastic!👏👏👏
A lyrical and musical genius. So much respect for TY.
Does he realize he has THOM YORKE sitting next to him?!!?!!?! DOES HE?!!
well ..he called him..so big credit to stephen
What do you want him to do? Fall down to his feet and worship him? Geez calm down
@@Balfour. That would not be enough, for sure, is Thom Yorke, didn't you notice?
Modernity Has Failed Us. Take it easy fella,
@@modernityhasfailedus.1616 calm your t!ts
'Luminous Green Onesies': Radiohead's concept album about late stage technological depersonalisation and subjective reconstruction via experimental sleep therapy. Coming in 2024.
that comment killed me 😂
and the leading single will be called:
We Live In Strange Times (It's Not My Fault)
It’s green man
That sounds like a dissertation 😂😂😂
This is the first time I'm watching an interview of Thom Yorke and it's so weird seeing him talk like a "normal" person after seeing him at the beach house and all
The amazing unusual genius of Yorke is rather mesmerising
