Holy Mother of God, that middle section at 2:07 where what they are playing is practically jazz with Colin Greenwood's bass playing and his brother on the Rhodes piano, to then just explode into a full on distorted onslaught where yorke channels out his punk side, "you don't remember, you don't remember". I must have heard this song over 5000 times and it still never ceases to amaze me.
You forget how much each member is adding to each section and the little details and that tie it all together, including the bits where they aren't playing.
how has no one commented on how fresh everyone looks here? bono shades yorke in the baggy camo pants with chunky ass shoes (what are those shoes???) and Ed wearing jordans and jonny refusing to wear men's t-shirts. they were really just naturally hitting a peak here and it shows in how well all of it has held up thru the test of time.

The first time I heard this I was a melancholy 16 y/o. At 41 now it still resonates for the same and completely different reasons. I appreciate it so much more now, and I'm so sad that I've become so emotionally calloused with age
The most fascinating fact here is that for 99% of the bands to come up with a song like Paranoid Android it means literally a Milestone. It'll be the best accomplishment ever. The peak of a musical career 'Impossible' not to descend artistically after a composition like this. While for Radiohead was just another good song. That's why for me they shouldn't get typecast as the Pink Floyd of our time. For me, they're more alike The Beatles. Where The catalogue of albums and songs is so good, varied and evolutive that you just cannot pick a favorite song among all them. Not easily (an album either) They've defined a favorite different album for at least 3 different generation most cases. Therefore If you want to talk about their best songs. When their best music was done. You need to name an album to start with to come up with a conclusion. And if that weren't enough. In paralell we have Thom Yorke making The Eraser, Anima and Suspiria OST which is like...ok..yeap... Radiohead is just too hard to compliment to. So I'll just play a song and chill whilst clic here and send this block of thoughts to you.
Well that's why they get compared to pink floyd. Pink floyd are equally as amazing in that they made the dark side of the moon and then went on to make wywh, abitw and animals all of which are arguably even better which no1 thought was possible after the dark side of the moon.
@@headphoneman10 Love Pink Floyd but I wouldn't say they broke as much stylistic ground as The Beatles or Radiohead did with each album. Not to the same extent at least.
@@dylanwesley3964 Agreed 100%. But I didn't say the 5 album run wasn't creative. It most certainly was. I just don't think the albums themselves differed that much stylistically in terms of tones, timbres and orchestration. Of course each album has its own identity, but the Pink Floyd sound is kind of characterized by that run of albums. If someone asked me to name the Beatles sound or the Radiohead sound, I feel it'd be a little tougher to pinpoint it.

One of the greatest ever live performances ever to grace a stage to one of the best albums ever created. They hit this to prefection. David Grohl said he experienced music revolution in real time watching this performance.
Was in art school in '97 and remember buying Ok Computer and The Verve's Urban Hymns in the space of two weeks. Jesus, what a year! British music probably won't see that sort of artistic peak ever again.
1997 was an incredible year for British music. Tellin’ Stories, Blur, The Fat Of The Land, Portishead, Vanishing Point, Radiator, Attack Of The Grey Lanterns, In It For The Money, Ladies And Gentleman We Are Floating In Space, When I Was Born For The 7th Time, and of course the fantastic two that you mentioned above. What a year for albums!
All the new "post punk revival" and windmill scene could be an artistic peak again, this year we've got BNCR's ants from there, black midi's hellfire, Wu-Lu's Loggerhead, the upcoming Courting Album... There's a lot of great music coming out of britain now and I advice anybody that has interesst in Radiohead to take a listen.

This performance will be 25 years old in about a week’s time. Time has gone too quickly!
And in 5 years it’ll be 30 years
And then in 10 years it’ll be 35 years
And then in 15 years it’ll be 40 years
Time sure is wild!
It is 25 years old now
@@HansDelli Hmm. I think your comment is not half as clever as you hoped it would be.

Well said !
THATS IT!!!

i’m a 15 year old girl watching this for the first time and this is one of the most incredible songs and performances i’ve seen.
Hi I recommend a song called 'The Bond Villain' By Robert Nix
Good job 15 year old girl I reccomend you to start with the bends, great album, a bit more chill

You don't usually hear a roar like that from the crowd on Jools. They know they just witnessed something special.
I was thinking the same thing.
A second of stunned silence followed by rapturous applause
The crowd was like "wait wtf just happened"
You forget how much each member is adding to each section and the little details and that tie it all together, including the bits where they aren't playing.
jonny running back and forth between two pianos and his pedalboard lmao
So crazy that Colin on bass is only in it for like one second. He always stands right next to the drummer. ✌🏼
I taught one band member’s kid and he asked if he could play ukulele for our play. One of the best days ever.
Tom's vocals are so amazing. Possibly the best live performance I've ever seen.
Side note: Props to Jools Holland for singlehandedly gifting us with an endless amount of epic live performances. Thank you Jools!

Loved this song the first time I heard it. I thought they'd peaked. I was wrong.
how has no one commented on how fresh everyone looks here? bono shades yorke in the baggy camo pants with chunky ass shoes (what are those shoes???) and Ed wearing jordans and jonny refusing to wear men's t-shirts. they were really just naturally hitting a peak here and it shows in how well all of it has held up thru the test of time.

May I please get a time stamp for these "jordans"?
If you wear uncool clothes it will be cool in 20 years time that’s how it works

One of the best live performances ever. Jaw dropping.
Finally in 1080p HD.
This version deserves it.
It's never shown now but the reaction of the other artists on the show after PA is finished is quite something. A mix of WTF was that and HTF do we follow that! Iconic.

I really like the acoustic guitar at the start and the electric guitar backing it up matches perfectly, also the soft drum play is hypnotic, bass line so smooth
Not just a song but a work of art
all songs are art
This is the single most amazing live performance for a band that I have ever seen in my life. A masterpiece of a song performed to perfection! 👏 👏 👏
It’s actually unreal how excellent this performance is ❤😮
It was crazy back then when this band started another revolution....
So you know nothing about music bro. Radiohead is a really great band but this live performance doesn't even touch Deep Purple in the 70s.
It's amazing how much the guitars sound like a piano during the chorus.
what chorus?
@@robinsonner5461 The “what’s this” part.
Do they use a Mellotron there?
@@naturalnashuanI think it’s just two clean guitars doubling the notes at different octaves, gives it the fullness of piano notes.
@@MarionRelics Ed uses an octave pedal for that part
radiohead is one of the only bands that you can blindfold someone, play the live version of a song and then the real one and they will be clueless as to which one is real
This has to be my favorite version of this song. Everything about it is perfect, the setting, the graffiti, the energy, each members performance. This is the perfect video. just love it so much
Remember watching this when I was a teenager. I'd never heard anything like it. Amazing
So impressed and excited to know they could do it live.
not only probably the greatest live performance of all time, the audio capture and filming cut is outstanding too
❤
Pure Genius
I remember watching it at the time and being blown away on my living room chair
The first time I heard this I was a melancholy 16 y/o. At 41 now it still resonates for the same and completely different reasons. I appreciate it so much more now, and I'm so sad that I've become so emotionally calloused with age

I love EVERYthing about this song. Hearing this live is nothing short of transcendent.
In 1997 this album was like an atomic bomb. I worshipped this album for months.
I still am in 2024
The fact that the song has been covered by all sorts, choirs, youth orchestras, etc says it all. Classic.
Easy Star All Stars do the whole album. Radiodread. Really cool

@@akf2000 the whole album is so well done.
Not easily (an album either)
They've defined a favorite different album for at least 3 different generation most cases.
So I'll just play a song and chill whilst clic here and send this block of thoughts to you.
radiohead walks into chat with - daydreaming
Well that's why they get compared to pink floyd. Pink floyd are equally as amazing in that they made the dark side of the moon and then went on to make wywh, abitw and animals all of which are arguably even better which no1 thought was possible after the dark side of the moon.
@@headphoneman10 Love Pink Floyd but I wouldn't say they broke as much stylistic ground as The Beatles or Radiohead did with each album. Not to the same extent at least.
@@shortyrags I don't know, pink floyd had a really creative spell with 5 separate albums from 1972-1979. Animals is a masterpiece.
Those guitar sections from 03:13 to 03:20 and 05:40 to 05:48 are utterly amazing.
I think it's called syncopation 😬
It’s actually a 7/4 time signature which is why it sounds slightly disjointed!

This is a masterpiece. On a different level. To anything
Thanks, I'm the art school type. I'll check out The Verve's album. I recommend They Might Be Giants, especially the "Lincoln" and "Flood" albums.
What a fucking year to be a music obsessed 13 year old. My Blur and OK Computer CDs were completely worn out.

Hard to believe this was 27 years ago.
The peculiar thing about Radiohead is that they seem to be individual musicians who happen to work as a group. And the result is amazing.
Very true.
