I wasn't sure if I'd discover even more amazing vocal percussion than I found on Smooth Criminal, but THESE multitracks completely blew me away. There are HUGE amounts... Multiple tracks of groovy, syncopated and tasty vocal percussion tracks that are largely buried in the commercial studio mix.
It's funny, after hearing these multitracks, when I go back to the studio mix, I can hear the pocket the vocal percussion lines provide but ONLY because I've experienced the multitracks.
You NEED to dive in with me here an experience the magic in these previously 'hidden from the ears' Michael Jackson vocal lines!
There are some other amazing arranging and vocal performance easter eggs that I uncover as well! (Completely unique to these multitracks and this song)
MJ's copyright owners will allow this video to remain on youtube but there must be consistent use of frequent stops. No one part of the the song in part or in whole can be played without frequent interruptions. This is partially why I stop and comment and sing during and after key sections that I play. Hey man, no problem there, everyone knows how stpd laws can get around music... if its a big company, they can take down your videos or demonetize it for actual fair use stuff, and you would only get it back online if you would take it to court, few months at least for 1 video. On the other hand, huge music production companies are literally stealing 1to1 melodies from smaller ones all the time, noone can do anything. Anyway, thx for sharing these analyses, these are awesome and do show exactly why, was michael at the top. Nowadays, literally noone has these ideas as to how and what to mix together within a song, let alone being a beatboxer adding to the song's genuinity and drive where it can be driven, but being silent where thats needed. Dramaturg is whats missing in todays music, and the lack of being able to express a feeling thoroughly - in pop music I mean.

MJ, was his own “musical instrument”. You should do a breakdown, “Money”,(from “History”, and “I can’t let her get away”, from “Dangerous”). The his “vocalizations”, are what make those song’s, what they are. Not only that, but mic placement, also had allot to do with it. Michael was a genius.

It is very much known worldwide, not much known in U.S. cause it wasn't released as a single in States. But it definitely went gold in Australia, Germany, New Zealand, topped UK Chart. Of course this masterpiece deserved more recognition.

I got to work with Michael Jackson on his "Invincible" album with Rodney Jenkins. It was the most fun studio sessions we had but felt a little star struck because it's Michael F'ing Jackson. Out of all the artists and bands I have worked with in my professional career for the past 27yrs, Mike is the most fun, professional and generous. He would buy lunch for the studio musicians and all of techs and engineers. MJ was the high point of my career, I was only 22-23yrs old at the time.
MJ has a scat and beat box vocal technique for certain songs, Mike is very tight on vocal harmonies. I subbed you last night because if your deconstruction of Smooth Criminal. Thanks for sharing this, I'm not a singer but I am a musician, writer and producer. I'm a "hired gun" sort to say and I live by my own quote...

@@chrisliepe Mike opened the door for me and my music career. I was cut down multi layered percussion tracks, when Mike starts feeling the groove he'll add his skatting beatbox. You know the game, us musicians got to be in the zone and feeling the groove. The "invincible" album was mostly digital recordings. I would go back and forth to actually play the drums and to play with the drum machine/sequencer. I honestly don't remember how many we laid Rodney did bass and vocal mix and produced the entirety of it all. I was in my 20s, my college years. I was young, hungry and eager and because of it, my engineering professor got me the job. From that point on. I gotten the honor to work with a lot of amazing known artists and producers. Danny Elfman (Charlie and Chocolate Factory.) Was my first film.

The reason why i listen to Michael's music as much as i do is because he could literally do anything with his voice, and you always catch things you miss, even after hundreds of hours of play. The man truly was a genius, and i adore these multitracks.

@@SilmeonMusic you don’t need to be in a session to know that. You can hear the vocal comps in the Multis that leaked. There’s even a video of him and Bruce comping together the lead vocal for Jam.
I absolutely LOVE Michael Jackson's voice. From the time he was young until an adult---I couldn't wait to hear his voice singing on a track. He just had a beautiful, unique sound and he could do SO MUCH with his voice! I miss him so much on this planet. The world has never been the same without him.
Mj plays every i strument in his head when he composed his music. That then flows out of his body thru his voice and movements to the rythm of the beat. Its insane. Havent seen anyone else do that

I have always been raised on and a fan of his artistry, but you have given me a different appreciation of his work. He was so underrated as a vocalist and a musician. The man literally can imitate any instrument he hears and make entire songs in his head.

What's most interesting to me when it comes to performances like these, specifically the 'beatboxing' that MJ's doing, is that I used to beatbox myself, back in 7th grade till about 10th grade, which was roughly 6-7 years ago. I learned it off of youtube and what not, but the thing is, all beatboxers use the same sounds, we literally have names for most, and the strategy is the same for all beatboxers that use those sounds. Sure it might sound different from beatboxer to beatboxer, just like voices are different from artist to artist, but Michael's beatboxing is unlike any other. He doesn't use much of, if not, *any* of the I guess "official" beatboxing sounds, he just invented his own sounds/noise that he makes with his voice which is insane to me. Just wanted to point this out to any people who are like "oh sure, Michael knew how to beatbox, ain't no big deal, I've seen other people do that". It's not like that! Michael invented his own thing that can't even be called beatboxing. Absolutely amazing, love the video and love YOU Chris! Thanks for all the stuff like this!!!!

That's a very interesting contribution, thank you. I think MJ was more about emulating real instruments and sounds in his head than indeed recreating beat box vocal.

Teddy Riley and Michael 👍 Michael finished recording the song himself in Sweden or Switzerland when he was on tour in 1997. It was an unfinished out take from Dangerous originally

Michael Jackson has such amazing vocals and vocal range. Not easy to do and especially with the beatboxing. A true king!!
I think the reason he was so good at using his voice in percussive ways was because that's how he arranged and composed his songs he'd record all the percussive and the melodic elements into a tape recorder and present that to musicians so he had to be good to be able to get them to play it like how he heard it in his head given the fact he was also a perfectionist
Also I think after “leaving” Quincy jones after that he was just free and experimenting!! Especially in HIStory!! He was such a genius!! Every little thing he added was useful to the song.
As he could not play any instruments from what I've read, nor read music. He did everything... Like everything... W his voice and ears.
@@6hypnone He did say he couldn’t read or write music. Instruments he could actually play some rather well, like drums in Morphine & he’s credited on many others too. But I think he could capture quicker what he was hearing in his head by doing it vocally

He is simply the king of pop, rock, disco, R and B and popular music in general like Beethoven in classic music 🎼🎶
I can almost guarantee that the beatbox was how the track was first conceived as he would lay down a beat box on a tape recorder and then start to write the lyrics and melodies and harmonies plus other instrumental ideas with his vocal layers before a producer gets the raw home demo. The beatbox added in is a salute in various tracks to how he conceptualised tracks. True pioneer. He explained this process a few times, once during court depositions about plagiarism… jackson wrote half of thriller this way (he wrote half of the album while systematically claiming all the albums biggest hits). He wrote all but 2 songs on bad this way. Quincy Jones was handed some of the most iconic tracks on a plate to polish. Jackson was the architect, Quincy and subsequent producers were his builders. People misconceive how jackson worked and see Quincy as the architect which is normally the case with artists. Not Michael jackson. He subtly but substantially drove his own projects forward. This is why any producer who worked with jackson sold infinite multiples of record numbers when compared to projects with other artists. The difference is jackson himself. Any producer who worked with him broke all their own records and never replicated those numbers with any other artist.
Quincy was going to be fired from Bad, but wasn't because of contract issues. That is what i have heard. MJ wanted complete control and Quincy wasn't letting him.

Blood on the dance floor was created during the Dangerous Era but they left it out and when they were doing History in the mix in 1997 Michael picked it up again. Teddy Riley said that MJ released it exactly as it was back in 1991. He said he told MJ they should give it a freshen up but MJ said no, that it was perfect as it was! lol
According to Brad Buxer they had the files from 1990 but re-recorded everything just before the song actually released. But it was very similar to the original

This was one of the first albums I bought as a kid. Superfly Sister was really great too. It's insane how much vision he has for how it all works together holistically.

His vocal modulations skills were maxed out. It can not be any better, but it in extremely unique cases, it can be matchable.

I don't know if you've got the chance to pick and choose tracks, but I've always wanted to hear breakdowns of tracks like Tabloid Junkie, Money or Morphine. I find the HIStory/Blood on the Dance Floor era to be some of his most interesting work.

Michael incorporated a lot of chest slaps to compliment his vocals as well. You can see it in his live performances, so you know he did the same in the booth.
This is one of my absolute favourite MJ dance track, the production is insane. Right from the outset it packs such a punch 💜

Yes and no. This is the one song most likely detuned and put through processing (to great effect).
Definitely not his natural voice, that song is massively tuned down.
@@freedomisslavery6840 granted it may be but Michaels natural speaking voice was deeper than the high pitched tone he spoke with in public, for reasons I’d let you research yourself. His voice in 2000 Watts, to me, sounds more like his natural tone.
That song has artificially pitched down vocals. There are artefacts you get from pitch shifting vocals and they are present in that song.

These are blowing my mind. Massive MJ fan and had no idea how much went into these tracks when you break it down. I’ve seen videos of his beat boxing but hadn’t realised it was in these tracks, now I know I can hear it.
As a musician and MJ fan these videos blow be away. This stuff is just epic!
I like Michael’s latter work even more than his iconic hits, it becomes progressive and it shows his evolution and growth as an artist and mastery of the craft.

The Requiem is right. The Invincible album is underated and not enough explored. Thanks for the video, Blood' is one of my favourite tracks of all time. I learn to dance on that track and groove!
There are two songs that MJ worked on with Teddy Riley in the Dangerous album that perhaps you would be interested in. Both songs have inspired Bruno Mars. In "Can't Let Her Get Away" Michael beat boxes but also raps sort of. Jam is the other song and this one is like he sings it all with one breath! Like all the words are jammed together! Very difficult to sing!
While I agree with the Jam part, he actually recorded 46 tracks of vocals for Jam and then he vocal comped the best part from each track to create one final perfect lead voice. He did this for almost all his songs (different takes) for example the first 2 words you use from track 30 then word 3 you select vocal track 2 and so on.
@@DaxterMaster I don't know if it is true that he recorded 46 takes. Actually I don't believe he did so many takes because he never needed to do many takes for the lead vocals for one song. Perhaps you are counting background vocals etc. Even if he had done many takes, his style was to sing the song from start to finish each time. So he could sing it like that.
With Jam it's very smart and artistic that they or he decided to sing it as if he is in a hurry, confused etc...his style and voice reflect the meaning of the song. It's one of the reasons MJ appealed to people so much, because his singing and overall style conveyed so much feeling and depth. He was feeling everything he sang.
@@feriedust4402 I agree with you though Brad Sundberg said he recorded 46 vocal tracks for Jam alone (lead vocals only). He did as many as takes depending on how many tracks he had available then theyd hear them all and mark the best parts of each and they’d fade into each track in realtime to make it one seamless vocal track which you can hear on the album.

I guess he isn’t just making percussion. He’s doing much more: he is TALKING and using the right words at the perfect timing to have this lovely rhythm.

Every time one of these MJ vox analysis video drops in my feed - that’s like another tiny christmas lool.
Btw, this one is the case where i would be like a boy jumping from a school desk saying “I heard it all in the mix!!” loool. Seriously while other videos more kind of revealed these body/mouth perc details for me - BOTDF was always associated with all these backings for me since childhood. A couple of years ago I even got it on repeat specifically to catch as many as I could. And now I can see that I actually did so for 99% of it.
I can’t thank you enough for these pieces of content, but especially thank you for bringing these “not so huge” songs from MJ’s discography - Liberian Girl, BOTDF, Dirty Diana, Earth Song, along with others. While they are (as the most part of man’s legacy) quite famous - but certainly they are not Beat it, Smooth Criminal or Billy Jean. This makes these vox analysis videos just extremely valuable for me.

MJs mutitracks are so layered beautifully that without breaking them down you wouldn't really notice them without having a good hear for sound and music. However by letting watchers of your video they will get a sense of how so very talented MJs was. He set the bar up higher in music mixes since his first days with Quincy. Great Video Dude.
I’ve only just discovered these videos. Incredible. I’ve always felt that the bass line defines the beat while the kick and snare are both behind the beat on this track. Not sure if they’re placed there, or just a long attack setting on the drum synth, but man does it deliver a heavy groove.
MJ really understood how to use his backing vocals to anchor the melody, and really exaggerate the nuances on the lead vocal to add all that character. That must’ve come from all his experience with the Jacksons, whose backing vocals were so clean. Great lesson for anyone layering their own vocals. Thanks for letting us hear this. 👍

Yes! I enjoyed this "treasure chest" of MJ's vocal awesomeness immensely. Just makes me have an even deeper appreciation for Michael Jackson as the multitalented and genius musician & entertainer that he was. I was honestly brought to tears listening to all of this and got chills hearing Mike's raw vocals, beatboxing, flawless harmonies, out of the blue comments, etc. Thanks so much for sharing this, Chris! May God richly bless the person who provided you with these gems. On another note, is it true that this song was recorded from March '91 to Jan. '97 and released March 1997?

As michael’s voice started to age he could take that older voice and expand it deeper. His range was insane. And how his mixes were perfect. This type of stuff should have been explored when the man was alive. He was a musical genius how he could hear this when it needed to be added

Michael was the king of voice--the best instrument known to man. So mind-blown after watching this. I was a hardcore Michael fan from 13-18 yo. I had my ipod mini with only MJ songs (about 130). I remember loving this song when I discovered it, but didn't understand what made it sound so intense. Now I understand how deeply he layered this song and why they made so many mixes.
this is so interesting because I can so easily see the way he's moving in the booth while recording these. Such a physical performance, using all of his body.
