max martin is coming close i think but hes not a singer himself, hes only a songwriter & has worked with dozens and dozens of singers for the last ~30 years writing a bunch of their hits
When it comes to Background Vocals, The way MJ was hearing all kind of instruments come together before they even started recording, Ad Libs, beatbox, Harmonies and layering, MJ is simply the best. There’s so much work that went into every single song of his, it’s crazy! And the way he CHOSE to make himself sound imperfectly perfect. A lot of artists lack of that and just sing trying to hit all the right notes and make no mistakes. Ugh, I love that Man!!! Thanks for breaking this one down! I think you’d enjoy 2 Bad!!! It has A LOT of fascinating background vocals & harmonies! I could listen to Michael mumbling all freaking day, haha!
MJ could have made multiple tracks from this. Is It Scary also has a similar vibe to Ghosts which i also love, i just wish Blood on the Dance Floor was a full studio album rather than a remix of HIStory for the most part. The 90's is an often overlooked decade for Michael. I find that it's his most creative and purest.
Man I listened back to dangerous and history and just can’t believe all those songs were on one album! And now being able to dive into the intricacies with videos like these just make it so much more mind blowing! He was a literal genius vocally and musically.
Ghost had 2 (maybe 3) working sessions. Initially, we had "Is it scary" ( "Family thing" and "Seeing voices" too), working for the movie "Adams family values". Project abandoned in the summer of 1993. In 1994, for the album "HIStory", MJ worked to include "Is it scary" and derived a new track "Ghost". Neither of the two tracks were chosen. Then, in 1996 (perhaps even late 1995), MJ resumed work on the video for "Is it scary" initialy for the Adams film BO. He worked with "2 bad" for the link with the "HIStory" album and "Ghost" rather than "Is is scary". The project will result in the 96 short film "Ghost". In the film (at least the first version), the sessions of '94 are used and not much improved since Teddy Riley does not intervene. The title was therefore not totally finalised and it is not known if any additions were made. Then, with the "Blood on the dance floor" project, MJ and Teddy reworked and finalised "Ghost" at the beginning of 1997 to give the version known today. Here, these are the '94 sessions (maybe 96). That's why the 97 additions are missing. For the story, with the release of "Blood on the dance floor", the short film "Ghost" will be reworked. The picture, but especially "Is it scary" will be integrated in the skeleton sequence and, I don't remember very well, the 97 version of "Ghost" will be used. However, for the credits, it's, for sure, the 94 version still used in both versions.
I've always loved listening to MJ's backing vocals, his voice was his instrument. Reminds me of Marvin Gaye, which isn't surprising since MJ used to sit in while Marvin recorded when they were at Motown. He learned from the best.

MJ was a definitely a genius on this one but let's not forget about the guy who created this amazing groove and the musical palate this song rests on; Teddy Riley, who is also a musical genius and has been since he was 14.
When I realized a few years back that the beginning chorus was just Michael and not a choir of women singing with him, I’ve felt so stupid and embarrassed because I should have known it was him. The echo made it hard for me to decipher 😂😭 The mumbling before the “Don’t understand it” sounds like how students hear teachers in school 😂 What Michael does is pretty much me trying to sing along with his songs 19:58 I’m so sorry, but- 😂😭
The old broken camera sounds, the distorted audio parts that almost sound like a voice under heavy noise removal, it's all so cool! You dont even HEAR half of these sounds in the final song!
Damn, I like your overall collection of MJ breakdowns for the fact that there are some rear yet nonetheless significant songs from the discography in it. Really appreciate your de-constructions videos. Wouldn't it be cool if Artist's/Record Company's and the big music streaming sites like Spotify and Apple released not only the artists music catalogue but their multi-tracks as well and even provide a way of, for example of using some advanced AI software that you could use the bass line in one song and the drums in another and mix them together where the AI automatically tunes and beat-matches the individual parts. Think of using the bass line of Billie Jean to the Bee Gees You Should Be Dancing with the brass section from Earth Wind and Fire. It would be a more rich experience for the consumer.
My understanding is that Kanye released an mp3 player that has a balancing and remixing "stems" built in. Not for using with different songs but so you can manipulate levels tempo ect per song

I was so excited for u to do this song specifically because I could hear little bits and bobs but could never pick them out and this isolates everything I've been hearing for years but couldn't fully pick out. MJ was a genius.
Another great breakdown, Chris! Showing all these videos from MJ really reinforces his aptly named title of “The King of Pop”. I mean he really was through all his abilities in making these songs come to life and sure he had some help along the way, but mostly these videos of you breaking down the stems of these popular songs of his, showcases what a pop master he was on stage and in the studio.
It appears you have some of MJ's original Demo mixed in with the final tracks of the song. He began writing this in the early 90's for "The Aadams Family" movies. The song was never placed on the Soundtrack for the films. And Jackson reworked the song for 1997's "BOTDF" Album. By that time, the demos were over 5 years old. There are also various demos and Remixes on the internet, for the song. It's was eventually released in Europe and Asia, as part of the "Michael Jackson's Ghost's" film. Which even had a premier at the Cannes Film Festival.

I LOVE all of your videos but i dont know why the videos about mj tracks are always more interesting to hear! He Was really a great musician! Thank you for making us understand how good he was like musician and vocalist.
Well this is unfinished , its the recording session for the demo version of the track and still a work in progress which paved the way too the final lyrics and structure and feel of the song . He did it constantly. But so cool to hear the B.V stacks and other little regular antics of Mike on the mic!
It really is such a treat when there are demos available that are straight out of the sessions so you hear Michael doing things like humming "dunna-da, da-da, dadala-da" instead of singing "there's a ghost out in the hall." It's intriguing.
Michael did gibberish a lot in his Demo's. The Demo to Billie Jean was similar. Michael would work the rhythm and vocal flow before he created actual lyrics.
Wow! Amazing what you do on your deep dives and share with us for the free 99. These deep dives alone are worth premium exclusivity! I'm a fan. Can't wait to try your personal lessons.
This was really fun! So you were definitely going back & forth between the demo vocals & completed vocals. I was able to tell bc the demo has leaked online a few years back. The mumbling tracks were the demo vocals. The session does seem like it was all over the place tho lol
So this version that you have in your hand is actually the Demo, which explains the unfinished vocals while he mumbles and the background vocals are not finished, plus there is a bonus feature in the demo where Michael takes a bite of an apple in the demo which is amazing to hear, but not in the final cut for the album version
Your tremolo at 19:15 was actually on point, very similar sounding to his. Michael often had that sigh or whatever it is at the end of a note that made him sound very passionate and into the song
Ghost is a very underrated song, like every song in Blood on the dance floor, history in the mix

HAHAA i love this chris!!! You like a curious little kid waiting for christmas gift when u turn up the volume of the vocals where they speak in backround. thats so nice to hear. love your content man.
This song was like Opera with a hip hop beat .. in the demo, there is a prelude by Luciano Pavarotti
I would love him to dissect the demo for thriller which is actually called “Starlight” or “Starlight Sun”
I LOVE all of your videos but i dont know why the videos about mj tracks are always more interesting to hear! He Was really a great musician! Thank you for making us understand how good he was like musician and vocalist.
One of my favorite Michael Jackson songs!! I love this
Holy shit...you made my wish true of the last video. Awesome!!
Glad you liked it!
I love how you analyze his songs! It is so satisfying and useful.
This was fun. One of my favorites. Michael was a musical genius.
This literally tells me to embrace raw emotions and do exactly what you feel 💚💚
I love these vids 🔥❤️ breaking down each sound and beat that I've never heard of. They all add up to make an amazing song. Love you MJ
Wow! Amazing what you do on your deep dives and share with us for the free 99. These deep dives alone are worth premium exclusivity! I'm a fan. Can't wait to try your personal lessons.
This time, especially all those percussion layers were so awesome to hear!
awesome! I really love the Teddy Riley / Michael Jackson Collaborations.
This was really fun! So you were definitely going back & forth between the demo vocals & completed vocals. I was able to tell bc the demo has leaked online a few years back. The mumbling tracks were the demo vocals. The session does seem like it was all over the place tho lol
We definitely need a 5.1 mix of all Michael Jackson studio albums
Agreed!
This break down is so cool.
The drum break down is giving me vibes of Cat from Red Dwarfs heartbeat. (Series 8 of Red Dwarf episode 1 i believe)
I'm dying to get my claws on those queen and Michael recordings that I'm sure Latoya has
Amazing ..... just freaking awesomeeee!
this could have been a 3 hours video
Thank you Chris
amazing to hear all these details!
Also, your content is amazing!
A shame music isn’t made this way anymore or made like Michael Jackson made it anyway …
