I never know what I'm going to get when I open up one of the Michael Jackson multitrack sessions. I'd heard various alternate versions of this song in the past but I really wasn't prepared for what I would hear and see in the LEAD vocal takes!
Wow, did they leave out a lot of what they had originally laid down for this song... And the way they sampled and sandwitched sounds from other iconic songs...
This session is a 'must-experience' for all MJ fans!!
I love that "ain't nobody's fault, blame it on yourself" adlib he did it's 100% from Blame it on the Boogie
YES
sunshine
moonlight
good times
boogey
He did it on a lot of songs actually lol. Signature adlibs from the King
Oh, my. It's honestly heartbreaking listening to MJs vocals on this. The way the angry footsteps just die away and he IS spent, emotionally and physically. as if we were witnessing his spirit being tortured and just die away in the process. What a brillant artist he was. It's heartbreaking what he was put through.
This was his big (post abuse allegation) comeback song after having gone into hiding for a couple of years.
Jeez...
Which is why the unedited "stop f*ckin' me"parts hit me so hard. THAT'S what he really wanted to say...
i never realized the song is about their father until hearing the isolated vocals.
@@zubileegluckgluckMJ suffered many forms of abuse. What he suffered by his father wasn't even the worst. Randy Philips admitting he beat him up, just because he didn't wanna do 50+ shows at the age of 50? Horrible, just horrible. Let's not mention the mental, emotional abuse by Sneddon and the media. Joe at least gave him something through his firm fist. But the media and Sneddon just grab and took what they could.
Fun fact: The Knowledge was Michael’s favorite song from Janet. And the fact he sampled it in this song just makes this song that much more special. Also, their voice just work so well together!!!
can't believe I never noticed that before. that fits sooo good.
Not surprising. It was cowritten and produced by Janet’s longtime producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
He said in an interview that it was Rhytmn Nation
@@melvin8696 Michael said it was Rhythm Nation and The Knowledge.
@@melvin8696 he's literally dancing to The Knowledge when he says that in his Home Videos
Janet doesn’t get enough credit for the Scream project. Michael wanted her to pick the producers of the song and he wanted her to pick a director for the video.both the song and video are absolutely epic and that may not have happened without Janets and the choices she made. 👍🏾
Thank you!
💯🫡
Why does the title exclude Janet Jackson?????
Didn't Jam and Lewis produce the title track too?
@Matt S
Yes..they did several songs
Is IT scary in 1993 für Adams Family was the first
On History they wrote:
Scream
Tabloid Junkey
History
2 bad
Is THIS scary
And a song called Rush. Which is unreleased.
Tabloid Junkey
Scream
Runway (Janet's song)
Were all presented to janet and Mike to Record as a duett
What Janet documentary didn’t cover was the story of how Michael was soft-spoken as usual. But then he went into the booth and just killed it. He was so aggressive and good. Jimmy, Terri, and Janet were stunned. Because that was only the first take, and after all that loud, aggressive, singing this softly, “how was that?” And that was his first run through. Janet said, “there’s no way I’m following that today.“ So she waited to record her Verses in Mnneapolis. She’s competitive just like Michael, and when Michael heard her vocals after she recorded him, he was so impressed with how well she sounded that he said, “I wanna go to Minneapolis and re-record my vocals. Janet does great!” Jimmy told him no it’s OK. You did great you killed it. Michael goes, “I’m coming to Minneapolis.“ Michael is also competitive lol. Jimmy said they still ended up using his original vocals.
This is great 😂. Miss this music.
I can hear their voices doing this and it’s so vivid in my mind that it makes me smile like an idiot and then I realize oh shoot they can’t have moments like this anymore and we can’t get the collaboration that those interactions come and feed from. Such amazing artists, pioneers and human beings those siblings were and are.
I could listen to isolated Michael Jackson vocals all day. I love hearing how he's just part of the music. From the breathing, to the stomping, to every little funky noise, to the amazing main vocal. The guy was far more of a musician than most people realize. He just used his body and voice to create all of the music instead of traditional instruments.
Many producers reported that when MIchael recorded hed perform to the point he was dripping sweat. Exactly what we got on stage was what went on while making the records. The man was so one of a kind.
Loved learning more about the masterpiece that is SCREAM. As one of its choreographers, I’m grateful to have found this breakdown of the song. Michael & Janet and Jimmy & Terry were truly a dream team! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🙏🏾
Scream was arguably Michael most prestigious project ever considering all the elements going into it like the video production, music from several albums, choreography and language used.
And you're one of the people making it possible as a friend to Michael for so many years and supposing him. Forget the business part. Your friendship and love had a much greater impact on him and his accomplishments.
Thank you Travis, much love and respect from I'm sure everyone that loves Michael.
Oh you are ICONIC
Thank you, Travis
Legendary Travis Payne! mad props to you
It's family vocals. The natural synergy of a brother & sister singing together.
Michael & Janet are a lot alike & probably have a similar thing that twins & other multiples have with an inner language.
They're feeding off of each other & feeding INTO each other at the same time.
So glad we got Janet & Michael on one track together like this. HIStory was indeed made.
No doubt, they literally grew up singing together
One of the most important songs of my life. This is the song that set the bar for me & still remains the bar. One of the greatest, most brilliant productions I have ever heard. Michael, Janet, Jam & Lewis define the word "genius".
Your bar is set far too low
💯💯💯💯💯💯
This is why i was ALWAYS into Artists like MJ and Janet ... this is Music Excellence !!! every little detail is so well refined, yet spontaneous and almost "home made"sounding ,that you find yourself saying"Genius"!
right! The perfect balance!
@@chrisliepe man, thanx for your work ... your musical sensitivity speaks to me in well known feelings .... these two are Icons and did major stuff ,which has been copied bu never duplicated ...and it s exciting to hear these tracks ,coz you really dig deep into the song and hear things, you don t notice in the final mix ...by the way ,MJ foot stompin, hand clapping, finger snspping and beatboxing, whispering, weeping and all those unique shades of his voice are really priceless
@AC72CH so true
Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 is a masterpiece!
'In the Closet' and 'The Knowledge'? Wow! I should have known, but I had no idea! These breakdowns always bring about a new appreciation for the songs! 🔥🔥🔥
Incredible huh?? So fun to hear all these details!!
Michael loved The Knowledge….he used to love dancing to it in his dance studio. I had no idea there was a loop of it in Scream!❤
Michael and Janet, the most successful siblings in history
Michael wouldn’t have been out of place in a death metal band with those screams and incredible grittiness. A master at work.
You can tell he was ANGRY while creating this masterpiece
Yea cause he does say stop fuckin with me but in video Janet shoots bird in place of the line
Wouldn’t you be with all the stuff he was put through around that time?
@@midnightlotus7047yup 💯
@@midnightlotus7047it was Janet who said it not him lol
The guitar is from "Sly" the song "I Want To Thank You For Lettin' Be Myself" also used in "Rhythm Nation" from Janet.
This multitrack is taken from the remix version called 'Scream Louder' from the 1997 album Blood on the Dance Floor HIStory in the Mix that's why there's so many samples. 👍 It was more like an alternate/dance version by Jam & Lewis plus Tony Moran.
This is actually the original version. Scream Louder doesn't have the "guitar" (keys) solo, and has waaay more horns and builds. Great version, but these stems are from the original.
I agree it’s definitely used for Scream Louder.
@@martinlroberts you're both kinda right, this is the basis of Scream Louder but there are elements missing from the multitrack sessions that are floating around the web. this is more a ruff mix
There is so much energy in the voice of Michael! Holy moly my jaw dropped a few times listening to this!
So many amazing details you just can't hear or appreciate!
you both nailed it!
You've done it again. This might be my new favorite. Janet plays around Michael in a way only someone who's known him intimately for decades could. That's what made this piece so magical to me.
I love this song Mj fustratration and anger really comes through. And Janet doesn't get enough credit as a vocalist. Her voice is so pretty it's fun when she gets gritty. I like your reviews. 🥰
This is the greatest collaboration in music. I was watching Whiplash the other day, it made me wonder if this level of music would be possible without how they came up. They’re built different. This is what life long excellence looks like. Thankyou for sharing this
This song was an amazing concert opening for the History Tour! What an artist he was! Very cool analysis of the track Chris!
It was! Such a great song to get the energy up!
Brutally great track. I was going through a divorce when it came out and its tone was an exact match for the anger I felt. It was and is still cathartic to hear this.
This song proved pivotal in shaping my belief in Michael Jackson's innocence, extending beyond the factual evidence. It's an autobiographical masterpiece that resonates on an emotional level. Someone facing accusations like the ones he did wouldn't pour their heart and soul into a track so passionately if they were guilty. The emotional impact would falter. What makes "Scream" even more significant is the authenticity it exudes. Both Michael and Janet Jackson have consistently emphasized their commitment to singing and writing songs that are deeply personal and reflective of their own experiences. "Scream" serves as Michael's heartfelt outlet, a powerful declaration against persecution, while also granting Janet the opportunity to express her emotions. It's a testament to their artistic integrity and the potential for music to illuminate personal truths.
The whole HIStory album is this for me. It really proves his innocence. I mean "Childhood"??!! Like, come on
This is bringing tears to my eyes 😢😢 MJ was such a genius and so is Janet. It's hard to find talent like this now
This is the best analysis of a song!! I'm absolutely mindblowed! 😍 I never could have thought that parts of "The Knowledge" and "In The Closet" are there. The vocals, the perfect combination of their voices, the interaction... this is called perfection. 🔥 Two genius siblings! ❤ Thank you for this video, I've loved everything about it! 🙏🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
I heard those samples on another channel. I was blown away. JJ & TL also sampled MJ on Janet’s runaway
wow this video gave me chills. There is something amazing about michael and janet as a duo. They had the talent and connection that was unmatched. Thank you for these analysis video. I was a hardcore MJ fan growing up and these videos are giving me a newfound appreciation for his music. Michael really gave every song his all.
this is the best era! More of this! "Stranger in moscow" is also an awesome track.
Yes! Stranger in Moscow is truly a masterpiece, and the lyrics are so haunting. You can feel the desperation and isolation Michael had to endure.
Yes one of my favs!!!
One of my favs. I learned that on the piano
Already liked this before watching because Michael's performance here is out of this world (heard isolated voice track before). Thanks for this!
10:35 the glass and paper shuffle is Michael and that was left in it ..wow the first random glass noise at the beginning is just so iconic and recognisable.
16:34 Adore those harmonies!
My favourite song of his as a kid. I remember buying that record and loved MJ's vocal attitude in that song. How does he do it? That is the question! So many guys can sing "cute MJ" stylish think the Weeknd, Bruno Mars, but very few of our current singer stars have that really great distorted vocal quality like MJ or perhaps Devin Townsend to take a living example.
Definitely was not expecting a devin townsend comparison when clicking on this video lmao
@@itsgrayvybaby Well, he's one of the greatest distorted sounding guys alive i would say, and his music isn't only full on metal hence the example.
The emotion, just that raw anger and frustration. Just really got me. I teared up.
Michael voice was sooo versatile. and the stomping is insane! the overall detail is phenomenal
Thank you for this Chris. Micheal Jackson - History was the fjrst physical CD I ever owned back when this song was released. HUGE inspiration. 🔥🔥🔥
One of my first as well!
@@chrisliepe Chris I have to be honest with you my old school teacher said a long time ago that her brother saw Michael Jackson coming in to the restaurant and was walking like an old man and hops like a grasshopper on the next day I found out from her in my classroom since 16 years ago she mentioned it before his death I don't believe that is not true.
Im so glad you did this, I think Janet Jackson is INCREDIBLE so if you can and ofc if you'd like, can you start doing Janet Jackson Deconstructions?
Another awesome Michael isolated vocals and with Janet. I have picked up so much inspiration from these Michael Jackson Isolated series of videos, and learned about how he approached his music because of how you present these MJ priceless isolated vocal tracks.
Fun fact: Scream wasn't the only song where Michael had responded to false rumors and accusations formed by the media. Another song of his in which he responded to the media was "Leave Me Alone". As I'm writing this, I found out that supposedly there were false rumors that he slept in a hyperbaric chamber to slow his aging process. Hence his track "Leave Me Alone".
Leave me Alone is AMAZING... I've done a video on that one too! :) Hope you enjoy that one!
and I believe also in “Why You Always Trippin' on Me"
I would love to see a video like this from invincible era, because that era is quite different from every other MJ era, and i think it would be cool to hear some invincible tracks.
Brought tears to my eyes... not just for the production but for all of the emotion put into the message of this one song representing the two most effected Jacksons. Coming together to push back at the enemies and also a plea to the people at the same time.
I love that you can hear MJ about to snap his fingertips off as he starts the first verse 😂
JJ & TL did their thing. Janet did her thing on her part & the backgrounds 🔥🔥🔥
Please do some of Janet!!! JJ & TL & JJ, have some great tracks!! Start with IF from her Janet album.
Yes, do "If" please!!!!!
Please do more Janet!
I second that, please do "If" or another Janet multitrack. There are plenty available.
This song is just beautiful and amazing And the habit Michael had to create was simply to be in the dark to try and understand the musical and vocal power…
Think you so so much Chris 👍👍👍
You're so welcome!
@@chrisliepe
Think you so much Chris 😊👍
Wow so that’s way the History Tour combined Scream and In the Closet together 😂
So nice to finally hear one of the most (or the most) complex production out of all MJ songs - pealed off.. Just because of how many layers and samples are working together to create this “catapult” arrow of power!
This is fire! I always loved the song but God, what you're giving us here is on another level. Thank you!
You're so welcome!
I believe at least some of the guitar samples were taken from Sly & The Family Stone’s “Thank You”. A popular remix brought the Sly song more to the foreground. I’m amazed at the past Janet & Michael samples. Mind blown. Loving these videos Chris - always a great ride!
Rhythm Nation, as well. If you REALLY listen to it, you can hear the guitar riff being looped. I let my mother listen to Rhythm Nation in the early 90's & she immediately said Sly & The Family Stone.
I was thinking the same thing!
In scream louder remix it’s clearly sly and the family stone
This was very cool to listen to. You could envision MJ in the recording booth just swaying and stomping his feet…I could feel the stomps… he was totally into it the track…you could feel his passion…it was just so cool.
Truly the best song to put a close on the new jack swing era of R&B music. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were geniuses along with the Jackson siblings
I’m blown away! Thank so much for letting us listen to the vocal tracks in isolation. It’s a real treat to hear these geniuses at work! I love Michael’s “angry” voice and whole-body performance.
Scream turned me into a Massive MJ fan! My fave music video ever! 😍❤
I’ve always dreamed of hearing WHO IS IT isolated vocals!!
Can’t thank you enough for all these videos, Chris! They’re always such a treat! I even go back and rewatch some of them😅 Been a fan of MJ since my teens and back in the day we couldn’t even dream of hearing such things! One word only - Magic!!
I remember Michael saying to his choreographer in a video that The Knowledge was his favorite Janet Jackson song.
That instrumental is on a whole other level. Mindblowing production.
Had no idea so much was going on in this song. What an amazing composition and production.
Michael loved The Knowledge and danced to it often. I think he mentioned this in his Private Home Movies special, and I think I heard it said somewhere else. He probably built this song around it while he was dancing.
I think part of that guitar part is a sly and the family stone sample.
This is like a journey through everything Michael was dealing with at the time in this one song, he was actually so wholesome and the way he covered up the swear word but it's there shows how much of an angry SCREAM this song really was. I love Janet and how supportive of her brother she proved to be in this one project, i feel like a part of her died with Michael, they were such a force together and separately. I'm blown away by your work in this video and in a way it's a tribute up to the level of an artist like Michael. So glad i found your channel lol, thank you for this! 👏💖
I agree - this ERA, right? As an MJ fan, this is my absolute favourite time in his entire career in terms of the music, and his expression of emotions in his art generally.
Those layered Janet oooh’s are delicious.
What you said about the song getting more ad-libby as it went on - that was the winning formula for many MJ songs. Start the first verse and chorus pretty close to the base melody with some less intense ad-libs thrown in (and in doing so, giving the listener a point of comparison for later on), and continue to crescendo, especially on the ad-libs. And what I love is that, mix-wise, the ad-libs are always treated as lead vocals, and the chorus is treated as the background vocal that serves as the constant for the ad-libs to riff off of.
So few songs (at least popular ones) nowadays even have many ad-libs, and they’re often pushed way down in the mix. What are you doing? That’s the emotion! That’s the humanity! We’ve already heard the chorus; give us some rising action!
This is why so much modern music doesn’t get a visceral emotional response from me like music from the 90’s and before does; it feels like a neutered product in comparison. Shout-out to Nico & Vinz; they’re keeping the ad-lib dream alive! I’d suggest you check out some of their work like “Hold It Together”, Chris!
If you ever wanted to hear Michael as an adult on the same song as Michael as a child, This is it! Janet always resembled Mike as a child 🔥🔥🔥 Wish they would’ve recorded together more often 🙌🏽
You've never heard Would You Mind then? LOL
So freakin' AWESOME!! I just love the gritty sound in his voice when he's singing while pissed.
The word pressure almost drowns out the F word but it is still there but it's sang almost like a breath which blends with the word pressure. Clever but sneaky. Also I'd love for you to get hold of the multitracks for This Time Around. It has such a gritty urban sound mixed with a church gospel kinda sound. It's a great mix I'd love to explore. Thanks again Chris!
Every time when you make Mj song I always thumps up before watching it
I like that :)
IT MAKES ME WANA SCREAM !
That was awesome work ! Man
So good! Love this piece Chris! Loved hearing MJ and Janet go back and fourth with eachother. SO GOOD!!
What you speak about at 19:40 is on the Club Mix, very loud and clear. You can't escape it. I luuuuurve this track. Since I first heard it, I enjoy miming the backing vocals. This has to be one of the most emancipating tracks by MJ. Praise to The King.... Brother MJ, I miss you. Thank you being a part of my journey 👑
This duet is one of my absolute favorites of ALL TIME! ❤ Amazing song.
This song and this music video changed me when it came out. This song is perfection and cutting edge. That video...still ahead of its time. You can't fake emotion, turmoil, pain and talent. That shot of Janet holding Michael at the end is such a somber moment as well. ugh. Thank you.
@7:58 that is the guitar sample from Sly & The Family - Thank You / Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation.
Wow this is soooo crazy I'm blown away by all of this
That had to the the coolest breakdown I’ve ever seen. Wow. So much in this song. Listening to this as a kid on headphones, I swore I heard things and I wasn’t sure. I was like no, I’m just hearing things. Now this brings it all to reality! I wasn’t hearing things, it was really there! Insane and awesome!
This song is so great. Those background vocal harmonies, mmmmmm. The way this sung in this too, so angry and I love it.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do isolated vocals for Who Is It and Give In To Me. I’ll definitely love and enjoy watching those kinda videos!
Who Is It is COMING!!!
Love these breakdown videos ❤The Knowledge was MJ’s favourite Janet track.
I always knew the song had close instrumental similarities with Janet’s “Rhythm Nation” song, with maybe You Want It aswell, and the outro being a throwback to Blame It On The Boogie (blame it in yourself, it ain’t nobody’s fault), but never realized any of the other samples you picked there!
Scream should date back to 1990 and Michael been contemplating this Best Of album since ‘89, part new songs and part old songs which eventually evolved into Dangerous and HIStory, and I feel like he had a tendency to slip in elements of his old music into his new music around that time to pay homage to his early self as he had that Best Of project in mind. You have elements of Startin Somethin if you listen to Money, and probably same with several other songs I can’t think of off the top. Or he just had a thing for reusing elements he really liked.
I felt emotional listening to this. The weeping in parts of his voice and the anger. Wow. Janet killed it too. her vocals were on point. I felt their shared rage.. What a family. I love the hidden F-You in the track... who knew?
Thanks once again for you forensic analysis and your passion for MJ. It is appreciated.
OMG!!! thank you for bringing this song, it is amazing, without a doubt a timeless song🇧🇷❤️
We needed this breakdown from you!! Thank you again, Chris!!
Amazing!! Love hearing the elements that made this historic song
boy have i been ready for this one. what a track!
This!!! Was!!! AWESOME!!!!! THANK YOU for covering this!
These analysis videos are just incredible🤯. You're amazing at what you do, thank you!!
Wow, that was amazing. I could listen their vocals for hours!
I heard the "f--kin with me" bit on the track when it came out. And hearing this now, as a huge Jannet fan back in the day, it's no surprise that she's singing that line while Michael keeps singing "pressuring me". :)
Such a great breakdown! I enjoy these and gives me a new perspective in mixing as well
This was awesome. Goosebumps all the way❤❤❤
Man... thank you so much for showing this for free, seeing Michael's multitracks in all their finest details added to your professional analysis is a wonderful experience, these videos are diamonds ! MJ forever and ever 🙏❤💫
Oh, you just made my *week*. Thank you! 🔥🔥🔥
Love your Mj music reviews. I learn so much
Phenomenal👏🏾👏🏾 thanks for posting and sharing this with us.
Awesome. So many layers on this song seems crazy but combineds sound perfectly!
Thank you for taking the time to articulate this. You put words to INTANGIBLES...feelings I've felt listening to MJ songs over the years.
I absolutely love how you react to these stems by Michael jackson. I found a much deeper respect for what he did all cause of your videos ....thansk Chris :)
great job as always
This is so cool to hear. Thx for posting. Love it.
Master piece !! Love Janet is sooo good !!
Dude I seen all of your videos (MJ) and although it's funny how you imitate MJ, I feel every passionate stomp, clap, vocal, instruments along with you and it takes me out of this world to hear EVERY BIT OF SOUND SO CLEARLY!! Thanks so much!
You did it! Awesome! Thank you for this breakdown Chris. There is so much story and history behind this track, understanding it from a production perspective brings a whole new appreciation for it! Thank you 🙏🏻
My pleasure!
Unbelievable again. MY favorite MJ times too (91-97). Thanks for the deep dive into the drums!
