- Speedpainting is a lot of fun. You get a lot done really quickly and when it's all based up and the dust settles it looks great for the amount of time invested. Let's see if we can speedpaint some primaris reviers in under 30 minutes!

Hey! Thank you very much for naming me! I appreciate it a lot. The one thing i did different and it improves a lot the time/quality factor, is the basecoat using contrast paints. They are not magical but they are specifically designed for this operation. If you preshade the model with airbrush (as dramatically as you want), later when you apply the contrast bascoat it will keep the highlights as well as automatically make you the outlining. You just need a hairdryer and in a few minutes you have base, volumetry and outlining done. The only thing left is the weathering you like (i use a lot so it helps with definition while being quick, mostly on black, just bascoat and a light silver chipping) and a few minor details. I kind of evolved the method now and the last ones are quite cooler than the first ones. Just a matter of practice. Anyway, really cool video, i really enjoyed it :)
To add to this, you could equivalently just use acrylic inks to accomplish the exact same thing, usually with more contrast and pop given the much higher pigment density. At the same time, if you prefer the more wash-y aspects of contrast paints, cutting them with matte medium and flow aid (about 4:5:1, ink, medium, flow aid) will get you the same effect there also. It's always nice to have options outside of just the traditional hobby brands and products :)
Goobertown Hobbies did a good video on making your own Contrast paints using varying ratios of inks and mediums.
@El Duderino hahaha, no problem mate, no need
@Reclusiarch Grimaldus yeah same, gonna need those receipts

This is almost exactly how I painted in 1984 when I first began doing Citadel lead models. Amazingly the second one I painted (Buoophut Bain-Arrow from the Knights of Chaos set came out looking quite well) The rest of them were truly awful though, as were all the minis for about the next 30 years!
Love your tutorials but i have one tip, When you do the panning shots record at 60fps if you are planning on slowing it down, then you can double the length of the pan at a cinematic 30fps=D 8:10
I'm not sure why the jitter happened. That's not slow motion, just me moving the camera slowly on a slider at 24fps. I've done it a bunch of times and it's never looked like that! Looks fine on the premiere pro timeline too.
She said speed don't matter - Scott says he'll prove you wrong.
You versus miniac in a painting competition
Me dying: When you 40 minute space Marine, look better of my +20 hrs space Marine
I doubt you take 20 hours on a single space marine.
@@juble7086 Don't understimate me, kiddo
I know that feel 😢
I go slow and watch stuff while painting. I could easily rack up 20 hours.
Just finished my ultramarine Primis dreadnought and saw the instagram post he talked about....FeelsSkillessMan
Now show me how to paint Mortarion in under 30 years.
magni319 good luck, brother,
follow, "in_the_middle_fff" for a super sick mortarion that's also taking 30 lifetimes.
On Instagram
Regardless of time, they ended up looking nice.
Completely agree, I thought they looked great.
easily the best mini painting channel on youtube, your videos are always the perfect mix of great painting and great production
Now THIS I can get behind.
Midwinter Minis Are you going to try this as well?
I'll aim for 10 minutes ;)
Midwinter Minis Oh god.
I thought he green shade on the final one was excellent. It looked almost like the armour was reflecting its surroundings, and that's dope af.
Very nice. I gotta say I do think using the black templar contrast paint as your black base coat would have saved you time. The blood angels red for the red accents too. I know you didn't love the contrast paints in their advertised 'one thick coat' application, but I think the black and reds work especially well in this way over a light base coat. Lots of free variation, wouldn't have changed your order of operations, and would have saved you time, especially on the black!
Always fun to watch painting in a challenge format! Thanks!!
Yes, but can you paint a space marine under 30 drugs?
This i'd support!
30 drugs per minute?
Jaekal o forse Alpharius can we agree at 29.9999999999999999991
Or snoop dogg style, after 30 blunts
He raises a very valid point
that shading with the airbrush is a genius move how i've never thought of that is frankly embarassing. Inspired. Thanks!
Such a fantastic video. I love these testing videos.
These videos are so easy to binge watch.
This video definitely has inspired me to grab my brushes by the short hairs, knuckle down and get some painting done, I've been practicing panel lining, mostly trying to get the thinning of the paints right. So far so good I have to say your videos most notably the 'eavy Metal videos have helped to no end.
Been going through you're older videos again and I'm shook how vanilla they are 😅 you've definitely came along way bub, glad to see you're getting so much better with each video 👍
Dude - What a great Video. I am so copying version two with some tweaks (probably measured in hours :D ). Thanks for sharing!
I like speedpainting videos, I could go for more of these!
If you like a more "cleaner" look for space marines (i prefer it) i may have a tip how you can do it.
1. Prime and Base color as you did before with the airbrush.
2. Use a quick Drybrush and add a little bit transparency to color you use to make it look less crappy.
3. Use a dipping wash for your main Armor Color (i would say drying time doesn't count because you can just paint other Space Marines while the first drys)
4. Paint the accessoires as you like.
5. Do the edge highlighting with an acrylic pen. I use this technique very oftenly, it is a very clean and very fast way to edge highlingt.
Downside, you realy have to use a varnish afterwards. I would do it anyway, but for speed painting it is another step you cannot skip.
But you can decrease the overhead time of painting with the airbrush if you paint 10 in a row and average the needed time.
For me this steps do a very fast and still very high quality job. But this also depends on the minuatures itself. Painting Blood Angels in 30 minutes is almost impossible i think. They have way to many details.
I dont know if this would be considered "tricking" or "cheating" but for me it is fine because in reality you would not try to speed paint charackters and for bigger units it is just fine.
Great video, thought it real insightful!
I’m contemplating returning to the hobby and I came across your video. I have to say those models look spectacular for the amount of time you spent painting them. i’d be thrilled if one day I’m able to paint mine half as good as that!
Great video. Cracking looking marines, especially for just over 30 minutes work. May have to give the challenge a go. Cheers for posting.
I think the second looks very good, especially the colour of the shadow you used.
Also, I got my patreon Miniac beanie and it is legitimately super nice.
Hi Scott,
I'm new to your channel - really enjoyed this video, gave me lots to think about in my own painting. Keep up the good work!
Really love your content and videography skills! i hope you can share with us on a room tour / setup tour / studio tour!
I can't emphasize enough how useful it is to have a spare model or 3 to experiment color schemes on. Shows you what a list or Photoshop mock-up never could, and is well worth the "waste" of having a Frankenstein model. Thanks for mentioning that!
I love this.
Dude, they look amazing! I would probably take more than 30 minutes just to apply the basecoat and they wouldn't look nearly as awesome!
Love your vids, keep it up!
I like the fact that your the only one I watch that does trial and error type skits. That helps guys like me who is a master of trial and ERROR
Zandri dust plus a thinned down brown (wash consistency, I recommend Dryad Bark) for pouches is quick and looks great.
Use zandri dust to edge highlight if you want, but you don't need to unless you're going for the 'eavy metal'ish style, just let the brown pool a bit more than you would with a wash and you'll get a worn leather/suede look.
Nice video, man. I liked the way you are using contrast paints. It's a little bit hard to change everything about the way we paint to cut time and still find the result good enough. You did a great job.
Plays Sepultura- chaos AD, knocks out killer minis in mind blowing speeds. Blacks out. Can’t remember anything. Results: incredible.
Really good video mate
Amazing video
All three looked really good. I liked the first and third more but the second was still nice.
I paint a few test models and write the steps and paints and normally two or three models have what I need to combine my favourite bits into the final choice.
I am no good at speed painting but just having a good plan has helped improve my skills.
Always a good thing watching your ideas and take on things. A.
As usual, a very educating video.
You try it, so we don't have to =).
Thank you!
This is such a great vid Scott; third mini looked excellent as a white scar (good call on extra weathering), 34min is a respectable time. I think with further practice and bulk painting you'd land it on 30!
Nice going Scott, I'll try your approach on my Death watch moreines. Of course with different colors. But technic wise definitely. 40 minutes is a good goal.
Hi Scott, great video! Are you able to help me out with how you did the base on test two? It looks amazing! Any help on the materials you used/methods to do it! Cheers
Is it weird that I like that all three models read as white as their main color, but have different shadowing colors? This is a sweet effect and gives each of the models some uniqueness while still seeming like part of a group. Alternating your shadows like this could a sweet way to differentiate specialists in kill team.
I think the 2nd mini came out the best, the white is vibrant and looks the most like a White Scar.
Scott I love this speedpainting vids. If you made more with specific themes it would be amazing. (Thousand sons please ;_;)
Great video
I've been using GW's Black Templar contrast over white zenithal prime for Test of Honour samurai and ashigaru and it is a big time saver. I do perform some edge highlighting with gray for the samurai (because they are samurai!), but even without this its a solid choice for quickly base coating black on a white primer.
6:51 the edge highlighting thing is probably psychological. If you tell yourself "oh it's ok, I dont have to do as much edge highlighting here, therefore it will take less time then last time" then that's giving yourself an allowance to slow down. You take more time because the amount of time becomes less important as you think you have less work, and less work = faster.
love the work question: you do not us a spray booth/aircleaning when airbrushing the mini's?
Honestly brother, I’m impatient as all hell. Which doesn’t bode well for mini painting. This video was awesome and is a great way to knock out a ton of minis without giving up halfway through the collection haha.
and now we know a cheap and fast way to paint space wolves
I’d be interested to see you try a Grey Knight Paladin as fast as you can. They have a lot of details.
those ~30 minute paint-jobs look better than what i could make in a lifetime. Insane work.
That brush with the broken tip at 2:43 has me screaming at the screen "LICK THAT GODDAMN BRUSH!" 😃
Okay van Gogh, calm it down a little 😂
Which do you prefer? Priming in your base color or zenithal highlight (black and white) and paint the base color.
That airbrushing of contrast then a "contrast wash" makes a really sweet effect over the white. That's really cool!!!!!!
if anything, this video convinced me to buy an airbrush. damn, that second attempt really looks good to me!!
Must resist trying to paint white scars army now, looks so easy yet effective. I think we need a video for just that easy but effective
Good stuff.
underooat your blacks and do them with a thin wash that breaks a lot on the edges. for extra points do your edge highlights on the black. you can drybrush if you want because the wash will be pretty forgiving. alchohol is a good additive for the extra break. your paint will really dry fast though if you do that.
$15 for the easy build models, $30 in NZ. Gotta love those GW prices
£7.50 in GB and even that is far too expensive for 3 models...
You need to hook-up with a UK friend like what THE OUTER CIRCLE does. He's from Oz but gets his stuff from the UK privately...
Those zenithol blends are what makes me wanna dive into airbrushing
thanks for the video, was really interesting thought not usable for my, I'm still at a very base painting level.
I was searching, through your videos, some specific one on weathering but haven't found one, can you help me to understand better this technique? thanks
@Miniac
Hey Scott, love your channel, and your "Speed Painting" vids! 👍
Can you please do Speed Painting vids for Infinity miniatures, WW2 minis and other historicals like Napoleonics figures, to see how your techniques could work for them!? If you could please use also GW Contrast paints for the above mentioned minis! 😊
Thanks and cheers Scott. 👍
Generally speaking, I've found that when you're going for speed its *definitely* best to apply washes selectively; the more common method of simply slathering it on your miniature seems like it should save time but its an illusion, since any time you might have "saved" is eaten up by having to go around and clean up areas you didn't want to shade or where it slopped over, etc. Really, the "all over wash" thing is only time saving if you're doing a lot of batch painting and even then it depends on how clean you want the miniature to look.
The exception here are oil paints. Which does save a ton of time at the weathering step.
@@Jawsofhana They do, but since he seems to have used all acrylic products for painting I assumed he was sticking with that and not mixing other mediums like oil, enamel, etc. in.
Morbius poster on the wall oh god I can't escape even 2 years in the past
Scott you are an amazing artist. Note that the intent is to paint these minis in 30 minutes. Though many would paint these marines in 30 minutes they are not at the level of detail you offer. You are also using many colors for detail to enrich the look of your minis while the other guys pick 1-2 areas of importance and leave the rest to one color or shade. In conclusion you can’t compare your artwork and detail to those guys that are trying to get an army ready for game day. It is not the same level of dedication. Disclaimer this is not to put anyone down. It is to observe that the intent of one paint job has a different purpose than the other.
OT question. For standard brush base coats, what is the comparative dilution ratios among the brands you are familiar with? I have never seen anyone look at how that might effect a brands cost verses value/coverage per ml.
Side-trek: Awesome t-shirt! :)
Can you make a video on the weathering you do? I like it a lot, but I'm not quite getting how to do it. Mostly that its just intimidating to take a sponge to my minis
Another glorious video. I think I prefer the cool tones and obvious gradients of numero uno. But the third looks sweet too. Number two I didn't like just because I don't like the look of a warm white for armour... I think it looks better for organic white things like bone or cloth. Still, you managed to paint more minis in this video than I have this entire month xD
Very interesting results.
The second one I think looks the best.
Just with that mild spot like effect really nailing the white. However the details are somewhat muddy when you look at it from afar. Maybe not the best technique for a wargamer?
I don't think so, it might just be the other clashing colors which look great up close.
Fantastic video either way, really hope gw makes more minis that are fun to paint like this.
When I'm doing some quick jobs, I usually go for a white dry brush (or a suitable color) before applying the base color, this helps with the edge highlighting if the color is applied in a thin coat (either by brush or airbrush). It helps skipping the edge highlighting step, which usually is the most time consuming for me.
Cool.
Shading with contrast paints. Now that's an interesting idea
where did you get your glasses from also great video
wow that is a great job bro i love the red faces
Yooo really feeling #2's colors
I wonder if the black pouches etc could be done quickly with Black Templar Contrast paint?
"But don't do that cuz we're fri-" lmao
I'd like to see only brush 30min challenge :D
Though Painting miniatures was never about how fast you do it but quite the opposite ;D
Why are you not using black primer and then white primer on top of the mini? Wouldn´t this save time instead of doing it with an airbrush to get the contrast/shade effect?
A dehydration machine, you know, for food, does help or at least makes each mini 100% dry in time for next coat in the assembly line.
Brown leather for White scars...You want a warmer accent towards red, black makes the white look more coloured. The white scars are more white / white warm grey. The true highlight, for WS is a sparing use of an accent of yellow, not red.
Nice
“Nermally I don’t share them” bruh why not, have you figured out the ultimate secret recipe?
Try without an airbrush :D This would be interesting time.
The answer to any question "Can I Space Marine ?". The answer is always yes.
I'm mega surprised that you didn't pure ink for the base coat as you did in your recent awesome tutorial
You can paint a space marine in a minute!
_You just gotta give it_ *ONE THICK COAT!*
you can also use Contrast Paints ;)
Challenge acepted!
Obviously these guys look great and better than anything I could do even when given infinite time! But can you do a similar test without the airbrush :P
I could not get the volumetric highlights and shadows with a brush this fast and this good with a brush ever in my life. A brush excels in other ways.
I'm more interested in managing to get a crisp white over an entire model in only 30 minutes.
Great job, if that wasn't obvious, bud!
those are some fine looking grey knights
That's a fucking awesome paint scheme for a space wolf though. Now to try and replicate it myself
When Scott's 30 min Space Marine looks yay better than your 3+ hour Marine... -.-
how long did the bases take ? how long did it take to prep each mini for painting? Is an hour each a good estimate for total time?
Carrero Arts I don't think you can break things down like that, he said 6 min for the bases and 213 for painting them somewhere, but he also didn't time washing his airbrush out, or his brush brush, so, these things are sort of just part of, actually doing the hobby
WHITE, scars"red".... Spray contrast white.... Use black Templar contrast on black areas make sure its light so that black turns into a really cool grey, add silver where it needs to go, add Red where it needs to go, less then 30, No high lighting needed. :D sounds simple But the goal is to get it table top quality. P.S. TRY GAME COLOR- Fluo. Green and Army painter Dark tone Mixed. Over a contrast white spray can. also Retributor Armour and Soft Tone over it for metal. :D cheers. the idea is to keep it green and yellow.ish
I really want to start up this hobby to later enjoy it and the figures with my kids when they get older. I'm afraid to take it up because I'm in China and would find it difficult to get paints, brushes, and models and so damn expensive, I just know that I won't be happy with my results.
6:24 wyldwood or snakebite leather even would've been far superior to cygor brown. Cygor is effectively just black. Perhaps if you mixed cygor with some of their contrast medium it would be more usable, but then it would basically just be wyldwood.
What if you get your process down so you can do 2-4 at once in an hour or two and then divide by the number of painted minis? You might save a few minutes here and there by airbrushing and sponging multiple at once.
That's the end goal of this process. You hone in your specific steps and then you mass produce it.
