    I get why people like airbrushing but not everyone can use one. For example I live in a rented apartment and I paint minis at a desk in my living room. Even while using an airbrush box I’d probably cover a lot of stuff with the spray and I would also have to endure the fumes. Even something like spray coating with zenithal highlights means that I’ll be spending most of the time outside on the street or in the yards. I could easily afford an airbrush but would probably never be able to use it anyway.
    So I’ll always appreciate guides that show how you can do things without needing an airbrush. So thank you.

    • @Smilomaniac
      @Smilomaniac 3 роки тому +11

      I use an airbrush in an apartment.
      What you do is get a folding paint cabin/station with a fan and an attachable hose and a head that looks like the end of a carpet vaccuum cleaner. You clamp that "head" in between the window and the frame and so the cabin will suck out all the fumes.
      Don't get me wrong, you might not be able to rearrange your home so you can sit and have the setup by your window, but it's absolutely possible with a minimum of hassle.

      "FUMES" from an airbrush arent that bad, I never use a respirator / vent / mask and I have no problems.
      This is coming from someone who has respiratory issues.

    • @dovarioscotia-churlishmini7246
      @dovarioscotia-churlishmini7246 3 роки тому +5

      It's not 'fumes' so much as it is paint dust - wear a mask if you like, and you can easily clean overspray with isopropyl or any other cleaning spray

    • @pwntehnoobs
      @pwntehnoobs 3 роки тому +2

      This only holds up for acrylic paints and even though there are no horrible fume smells, you should still wear a dust mask. You still are creating a fine paint mist, those paint particles are not good for you and your lungs. But with acrylics you have no paint fumes that are horrible and if you make a nice boxed of wall the paint will stay there and not go around the whole room. Also it really depends if you are doing large surfaces for example during base coating or when you are doing very specific work. In the second case you almost have no spreading as well.

    This is pretty much the sort of slap chop technique I was looking for, I'm going for space marines, based in army green, dry brushed in Screaming Skull, contrasted with Militarum Green so not as bright as the salamanders not quite full as raptors or cadian with copper/bronze heads and trimming, purple eyes, armour joints, wax seals, lenses and plasma
    This was the perfect condensing and refining of all the slap chop methods a little bit off all the good bits I liked about it and great technique over all

    I don't have an airbrush, and I have reasoned over it a lot. Some of my favorite paint in my arsenal are high flow ones, perfect for airbrush. But I have such a work schedule that I physically can't use it, my painting section are at most long an hour, from 4 to 5 into the morning. Not the best time to use a compressor. So I have studied how to substitute the airbrush.
    Some thing are simple - if you are more of a wargamer than a painter, you just need the correct spray can for your color scheme. Just use the one from a brand like Montana or Molotow. You will always be using that color, after all.
    But to be fair, I go with drybrush and stipling. To start with, I prefer the dirtier, duster and older look, that it give. More grimdarker, if you ask me. Still fast.
    My true challenge was finding Rosemary's size xs drybrushes. Changed my game.

    As someone who was hesitant to buy an airbrush: it's both worth it and inexpensive. There's budget, lightweight airbrushes for a bit more than the cost of an intercessor. Airbrush thinner can be homemade for around $10 and airbrush cleaner is also cheap. It greatly enhances your painting once you get the technique down and is worth every penny.

  • @Smilomaniac
    @Smilomaniac 3 роки тому +6

    I was stubborn about not getting an airbrush, because it's so god damn expensive where I live. However...
    Zumikito is right about the airbrush and I wholeheartedly agree: It's one of the best tools in your arsenal for painting miniatures. Primer, highlight/zenithal and basecoat without the need for a toxic spraycan or having to depend on the weather to use it (and if you live in an urban area like me, you might struggle to find a spot to actually use a spraycan).
    I know it can be really hard for some to afford an airbrush, compressor, cabin and various things you need for it (cleaner, thinner, flow improver, airbrush paints, a pot, cleaning tools... etc) and the big draw for many is to get started and going with the hobby because you have momentum and are excited. I saved up money month after month and got myself all the stuff and it's been absolutely worth it, especially because the main color I paint with is orange, which is a terrible and god awful color to paint with as a basecoat. Seriously, do not paint with orange unless you're a stubborn idiot like me.
    If your goal is to "truly" speed paint models as fast as possible, then an airbrush is your best tool and you can adapt an army for that purpose, such as giving them a theme, like making them look like they're living statues made out of stone and add dramatic highlights. Even if the models aren't painted with tons of detail, they will still look striking on the tabletop.
    People are usually more impressed with a cohesive themed army, than a ton of individual models painted in excruciating detail.

    What colour do you use to shade red? Would you use black or do you use a red wash? Want to make my blood Ángels look as good as possible. Thanks

      Black always works, but dark brown is also great

      Thanks for the response! I think I might try a red wash and brown and black to see what works on what models. I might use red on most of it and black or brown in the darkest recesses

    I think it's a shame that you're suggesting that your viewers are too cheap to get an airbrush... For me, It's not about the cost of an airbrush but the practicality. I paint at the kitchen table sometimes with my boys joining too and I'm in a situation where an airbrush is not practical. Great content as always, subbed and looking forward to the next.

      Oh no, I believe that majority don't get one due to practicality, it was just a joke! Thank you

    Does oil wash work well in a calligraphy pen w/ nib the same way the enamel panel liner paints do? I find the pen has really good control and the nib holds more paint than a brush does so I don't have to keep going back to dip. Also, very easy cleanup!

    So red with matte varnish... kills its vibrancy. What can be done to help fix that?

    Would acrylic ink with flow improver work instead of oil wash? Seems a step too far for me to have to use oil paints...

      Warm up the spray can by putting it in a tub/bowl/bucket of warm water for a while ahead of time. It makes a huge difference for me.

    I NEED HELP! Zumikito how do you strip minis to bare plastic with just isopropyl? Ive been trying but I cant get past the primer, and in the shadows and clogged creveses. How do you do it? how long do you soak your minis?

    • @Zumikito
      @Zumikito  3 роки тому +1

      Soak it for a day and use old toothbrush. If there is paint left, let it soak for another day

    is there a way to do zenathal highlights using differ color metallic primers?? and then use contrast paints to simulate metals? (ie copper/bronze)

      Using metallic primer and airbrushing contrast paint over it, is the way to go imho
