The fact that the rear wheels are armoured, while, the more exposed front wheels are unprotected, is a weird design choice from GW. At least Jay was able to find a use for those mud guards.
This is what bugs me the most as well: have a better armored rear section than the front. I personally would have slapped extra armor on the front, but this solution also works, since now you don't see the other armor as much.
probably because the front wheels are used for steering and need to turn, whereas the rear wheels just go forward/backwards, so can have armour round them
I love the fact you debated for ages about whether to weather the tyres but simultaneously had no regard for whether the plasma gun should be on or off!
Lad in a Facebook group made a rhino and it was epic. Like a40k ambulance come operating theatre for wounded marines. Shame you can't attach pics in youtube.
So a while back I picked up the two year old White Scars battleforce box because it was 30% off at my LGS because the box was on clearance and they had a sale on all GW products to boot. The box includes two ATVs which I have yet to build and paint for my Salamanders. So this video is rather timely as I was planning to tackle this box some time later this summer. Using the ATV as a gear carrier with extra bits is a great idea which I will probably steal, even though I hate working with green stuff.
It’s not cheap but apoxie sculpt is the bomb and is everything green stuff should be. Also, mixing green stuff and milliput (50/50 is good but other ratios work too) makes GS significantly less annoying.
The peak of my excitement about GW was visiting Warhammer World in the late 90s (aged 10). Jay brings that energy to every video, and I love it. I haven't even played Warhammer for 20 years, and I still watch this channel.
He gets some awesome mileage out of contrast paints and drybrushing, neither are particularly difficult techniques/tools to work with. But as you can see, when practiced for a long time can look absolutely epic.
You really nailed this kitbash! Nicely done! I also struggle with this kit, I converted mine so the turret guy is aimed one way, and the driver is aimed the other…but it needs more bling, like yours has.
There's a scene in Band of Brothers where a soldier shows up in a jeep full of ammo as Easy is getting ready to go into combat and the actor playing said jeep driver is Jimmy Fallon. This reminded of that. The eventual Supply Officer for the unit is also played by David Schwimmer. This scenario practically writes itself for hilarity as these two zoom across the battlefield delivering ordinance and picking up spent casings while the gunner screams "PIVOT!" in a distressed tone.
IIRC That guy won a medal for that, he drove that route over and over for hours, even though the Germans were encircling them, getting as much supplies as possible to the 101st until he basically got cut off from them.
7:44 “nip responsibly” reminded me of the time when I was putting together some tyranids (I think) and dropped my nippers and the sharp blade dropped directly on my foot, leaving a big gash that I didn’t need to go to the hospital for but it gushed out blood and my nerves hurt so bad, not to mention the foots nerves are super sensitive
I LOVE Outriders and Primaris Intercessors! No one says they’re good but actually when you run 12 Outriders and 20 Intercessors with 2 Lieutenants, they do some decent damage
Applying petrroleum jelly (Vaseline) to your hobby tools you are using to work green stuff prevents the putty from sticking to your tools. I use it all the time.
Such a cool model! I've been thinking that if they don't like people using fortifications, indirect, and aircraft, they should rock paper scissors it or something...
Good job attempting to make the space marine McDonald’s toy look good. If there’s anything I could suggest, I’ve always thought about a kitbash that makes the space marine at the front covered by a solid cockpit, so that he’s not hearing that heavy weapon fire and would make the silhouette look more like the tumbler from Batman, which I always thought was cool looking
I don't know if you've ever considered it but reassembling the kit before the white pass on the zenithal will leave shadows where there would be like below the gunner and around the driver.
This is awesome, I love the guns and supplies layered on the sides of the vehicle. You've made the ATV an absolute feast for the discerning eye. Great job!
14:25 funnily enough as a Space Wolf player, that is exactly what I ended up filling it with in my escalation league last year. It was the sole reason why I bought the kit.
I love Suppressors, I have 3 units! They were pretty good in 9th for Iron Hands, with the Heavy giving them move and shoot turn 1 and easily on a strat .... they're not so much that now.
You didn't paint the front bolters! Looks great nonetheless, although it hasn't resolved the issue with ground clearance and the fact the wheels cant turn.
i dont play 40k anymore, but when i did as a blood angels player I enjoyed scouts with pistols and chainswords.. much more useful with sniper rifles (back then at least) but i always thought it was more "blood angely" to have them melee.
Hey jay, thanks for the inspiration with the weapon transport. a green stuff tip i have from across the pond is to use water based lube rather than just water, it doesn't evaporate as quickly but can be easily wiped off with no residue, a small bottle of the stuff is dirt cheap too, should help stop your tools from sticking without flooding everything with water
I love the look that you have done. I have two ATVs I’m gonna bash and will definitely consider this for one of them. The model kit that I like that nobody gets excited about is Reivers. I think rivers look phenomenal just wish they played that way.
As a fellow Black templar player, I will say I nailed this challenge. I made it sort of a tsmplar chariot. I put a blade gaurd with the marshall backpack as the gunner...holding a banner(took bits from a repulsor for the Multi melta handle) .
My favorite unit is a primaris Invictor tactical warsuit. I would love to see you make one and I have an idea on a cool design. You should have the pilot standing outside of the warsuit. Please make a video on this model.
What would really Jimmy my Jams is to kitbash a Firestrike Servo-turrent onto the front of an Invictor Tactical Warsuit, giving the pilot armor and huge guns!
I love the paintjob and I love the idea of hanging weapons on the sides, but I still don't really like the model itself - so here's an idea if you feel like making another one of these: turn it into a drone. 1. Remove the gunner in the back and raplace it with a cogitator bolted on the back of the vehicle to control the turret (which can now turn 360°) 2. Turn the driver into a servitor 3. Throw your unmanned ATV against a convoy of enemy light armoured vehicles 4. ??? 5. Profit
I love this take on the ATV! The lack of front armour reminds me of the old metal Land Speeders from Rogue Trader/2nd edition Have had one in my Pile for a while and this has given me a direction for my version, great job Jay 🔥
Incursors are one of my favourite sort of overlooked SM infantry unit to bring I love using their +1 to hit strategically to increase the damage output of my guys overall.
Great idea as an equipment cart. Next time think flamer fuel bottles, bolter magazines, spare tires, toolboxes, towstraps, etc. Rarely, we needed fresh weapon systems, but we needed LOTS of ammo. Cheers!
Glorious paint job as always! I quite like the whole "water boy" idea and am tempted to try something similar on a vehicle. Probably not the ATV though. Great as the kitbash was, I think the model is just foundationally antithetical to my aesthetics. Then again, I like Reivers, so I don't exactly get to judge lol. Something about the flappy vent wings. Though... maybe if I kitbashed it using parts from another kit... I remember some of the Genestealer vehicles having a nice aesthetic... Great, now I'm thinking.
I like all the lieutenant models, especially the one with combiwapon, that one you can paint as a different chapter and it fits right in both design and rules wise.
A tip to working with greenstuff: Vegetable Oil, or Olive Oil, works better then water. And, if your mixing Greenstuff and Miliput together, the oil doesn't loosen the mix any!
Could make a second one that acts as a recon vehicle who only really has the heavy weapon as a secondary defense, with the primary one being getting the hell outta dodge
looks a little better than the stock kit and i like the purpose you gave the ATV but i personally would have build a cockpit around the driver that it looks more like the old Batmobile ^^
I really dig the design aesthetics of the Phobos armour guys, specially the infiltrators. Might just be because I had the older space marine combat patrol and played that a lot during 9th. but damn, if 8 foot tall sneaky space monks isn’t funny then idk what is
This looked awesome! I love Aggressors with their bully suits. I had a blast assembling and painting them, I always hate when they’re killed off the table😂
The ATV is one of my favourite space marine units, but I can’t remember if that’s because I actually liked the design or if I like it because my dad gave me one for my birthday as one of my first 40K models. Either way it’s a special unit to me and I love it
Fun Sternguard vet combo for gladius. Attach a captain and a lieutenant. Give captain fire discipline for sustained hits. Lieutenant gives Lethal hits. Sternguard already have devastating wounds. lastly use the cpatains free stratagem for the unit on Storm of Fire to get ignores cover and +1 ap to their shooting for the turn. This works well with 5 sternguard but 10 would probably be more effective. Hope this helps anyone and let me know how it went. 👍
I personally loved painting reivers, they are such cool models and i love the skull helmets. Looking forward to seeing you tackle them. Also would be really great to see you do a slower more detailed video on how you paint faces.
The invader ATV is my personal favorite space marine vehicle imo the design is amazing this is definitely a kit that was made for me lol I got 2 thinking about a third!
When doing a reiver squad, might not be the worst idea to build some jump packs for them so you can also run them as an assault squad. Think the slim sanguary gaurd packs with the mono engine (without the wings) would fit them pretty well!
the way i modded it is similair but i gave it a longer tray and put a couple weapons and ammo boxes in the back and i just up armoured the front i tried making it like us military buggy
As a white scars player I can say that it is better to run them as a separate unit it gives you a hard unit to move off of obj and you don't get there ability if in the outrider squad
Great video and conversion again. That sneaky decal paper on your left hand in the end of the video is awesome. It thinks : " If I stay cool and silent he will not notice me" :D
Having watched the vid, good job. I think what messes up the dimensions of this thing is the width of the bike wheels. Chop them in half and you could really shrink the width down. It'd be wider than a bike but not as wide as a rhino, which is where it needs to be
hey i don't know if you will read this, but I think you'll get much more believable eyes if you use a darker/more subtle shade than white for the whites. the contrast of white and black is verry easy to make look a little wrong, but if you use a darker white, the eyes will both look more natural and also be more forgiving to paint.
The most common modification that I've seen with the kit is to add, essentially, a cattle catcher to the front. One that a friend has also has an ork hand reaching out to seemingly be hanging on while being dragged underneath it
Im a huge grey knights player and we see so little of their content and Im gonna say it, the “baby carrier” dreadknight is really cool. On paper its incredible and really packs a punch, but it looks… silly. So I got the conversion kit for it that makes it look like a REAL knight! I would love to see you do the same please!! Maybe you can learn to love it as I have
A while back after a game of Kill Team I picked up a cheap secondhand Land Speeder from the local game store, not realizing that its datasheet had recently been retired. I've been planning on running it as an ATV instead but now I kinda want the real thing too.
This came out looking really cool! I always thought the atv would look good with extra armour that covers the front and wheels like a car or making it a tracked vehicle like a zippy little light tank
I really like the primaris reivers in concept. Hell I even think they look awesome. The idea of the quick agile beast on the field is dope to me. But I kinda feel like their stats are really what holds them back. Unless you're a Raven Guard player there's very little reason to play them. (Cries in Blood Angel fan boy)
The Firestrike Servo Turret. The goofiest thing to bring, it's so cheap and no one expects it to actually take out a tank or Dreadnought. One of my favorite units that might get te axe for how niche it is.

Did anyone else notice the piece of decal paper stuck on Jay's arm at the end of the video? He doesn't only love decals, he's *becoming* decals!
Hey, Jay, any spare bits you don't want you can donate to me😂😂
Can I ask what paint brushes you use bro?
😊
Kitbash an old style VW beetle car model into a battle buggy!!!!! That world be fun and awesome.

I've actually been wanting to make one out of a rhino. Or using the old space marine attack bike.

Every time I'm trying to find my own paint scheme for my Black Templars, and then Jay shows me again what peak Templar looks like

It’s the reason when I started to get in 40K I picked the black Templar!

This was a great conversion. Definitely makes the ATV look much better.
The Firestrike Servo Turret. The goofiest thing to bring, it's so cheap and no one expects it to actually take out a tank or Dreadnought. One of my favorite units that might get te axe for how niche it is.
