Claims it's a speed paint,
Turns out it's a damn good painting tutorial in its own right.
Thanks Roger! :)
Yeah I was expecting some quick dunk in washes type tutorial lol great tips all round in this vid
That moment when you accidentally play Guy's video on the projector in the conference room instead of on the display at the doctors office and the junior doctors wonder why a man in a creepy voice talks about painting toy soldiers, while they have a meeting in the conference room.
Guess I have to find a new job.
Haha, best reason to get fired, I'm sure ;)
well did you get fired?
@@Sassy_Witch The miserable health system in Germany and the lack of doctors are on my side. It's like protection against dismissal. 😅
@@lenoks_de Pfft, lucky you :P
You're almost immortal now
I bet it was more exciting than the original video. Something to talk about after the conference. +1 from me.
Instant subscribtion. Gonna binge watch your other videos when I get the time. Amazing work and awesome advice
Excellent! Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it :)
Same!
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anyone know of a way to get back into an instagram account?
I stupidly lost my password. I love any help you can offer me!
@Nathan Quinn instablaster :)
@Simon Kellen Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I would love to watch a video that describes the process you go through when you're deciding on a colour scheme and painting techniques before making a guide like this. You always seem to pick simple, effective and attractive colour schemes (with colour mixing), a streamlined painting approach, and interesting techniques. I am intrigued by this.
Great idea Andy, I've been toying with this too. There's definitely some beard-stroking, head-scratching silent prep that goes on as I figure it out, you're right!
@@MidwinterMinis Darren Latham's channel on UA-cam recently put up a kind of "planning" video (for display level painting), but something similar for these speedpainting/tabletop gaming would be pretty awesome. The planning stage I find can often be as fun, if not more than other aspects of the hobby
He makes it look so easy and then it tricks me into thinking i could to that
Thank you so much midwinter this really helped me overcome my fear of painting these models I really hope the best in everything else that you do
Thanks so much! Very kind of you to say :)
Well, for Nurgle models, "perfection" just means messy and revolting so lol
Exactly. Zenithal highlight, Nurgle's Rot, done, hah

"Who came up with these names?" Evidently some madman with memories of those whimsical days gone by... Funnily enough known as Rogue Trader, and early 40k (Which faded away for the most part before it started to come back more recently.) which gave us such gems as the Rarest Space Marine- Brother Craig (no seriously.)
I still have a picture of those Rare Space Marine names from Rogue Trader.
I love the old Rogue Trader stuff, it's nice to think these names are a throwback to a more carefree, tongue-in-cheek time :)
If this is speed painting, full length painting from you must be gorgeous
Haha, the trick is: I never take longer than I need to ;)
"decent paintjob" he says pfffffffff.......thats amazing
You're too kind!
"Decent paint job" it's better than the dam box art 👍
I really appreciate how you're not exclusively using citadel paints, showing that if you hone your craft you don't need to be spending 4€ on every color variation.
Awww man this video is about to get SOOOO many more views with the re-release of the Gellerpox!
I've been painting for 23 years on and off, and I struggle with inspiration due to being a perfectionist which leads to long turn around times which is frustrating.
This painting style is really inspiring. That wash you made was the first time I saw someone cover an entire model in wash and it is still looking nice and soft.
Also they way you mix paints is really interesting, not used to it since I use citadel paints. It feels refreshing to watch and I'm really impressed with the result you created on these minis!
Thank so much! Yeah, it definitely helps to give yourself a time limit or some sort of aim, other than simply being as good as you can possibly do it. I can always make things better, but at some point you just have to call it a day :)
SinglemSolis Agreed
Hey I saw my name on the list for the giveaway, does that mean I'm famous now? :D
Great video and really cool colorscheme =) A joy to watch!
Cheers from Germany =)
Du warst schon berühmt!
Because of this channel bought my first kit, super excited to start up the mini painting hobby.
NICE! Good luck starting out, matey!
I’ve watched several of your videos today on models that I have no plans on ever owning or painting. Your narration is just really relaxing and the color choices you make are awesome and unique.
Haha, that's okay! Good videos are worth watching, even if you don't personally partake of the stuff in them :)
Guy, this is a wonderful tutorial, and a great scheme. I just got these for myself and was debating the paint scheme. I'm thinking yours will affect some decisions I'll be making.
Glad I could help you out! I always find Nurgle paint schemes very fun to create :)
I wish I could find these models somewhere. I don't understand why GW would limit them so harshly, a lot of work must have gone into these sculpts.
Hello there!. What a fantastic channel you have, guys... er... Guy 'n Penny! This video is being quite helpfull and inspiring. Thank you very much. You are doing a hell of a job there. Just one question. I´m trying this DIY technique now and the son of a b... dries shiny. Am i missing some step? or maybe i misundersood something. Anyway, any advice about this? Thank you very much. Cheers from Spain. Keep it up boyz!! You have an amazing channel!!
Thank you Alvaro! Are you sure you're using "matt medium" rather than gloss or satin medium? Matt medium should, as the label suggests, have a matt finish. Make sure to give everything a good shake before you use them!
Hello there again Guy´n Penny. It is matt as hell, that´s for sure, same bottle as yours. I guess it´s all about shaking it as there is no tomorrow. For what i´ve seen, the more you shake the medium before and after mixing it with water and soap the better. I can´t wait to start with the killteam rogue trader box. Thank you so much for your advice and for all your work. Seriously, it rocks. Bye for now!.
You had a couple of drybrushing steps in here. Have you tried switching to cheap makeup brushes for drybrushing?
To be honest, the paint brushes I'm using are cheaper than any makeup brush I've seen yet, less than £1 per brush.
Guy, you really knocked it out of the park with this one. By far my favorite painting tutorial you've ever done. Keep up the good work, mate.
Wow! Thanks so much :) I really enjoyed painting them too
"Speedpaints" 24 models that each look better than my best all-time effort.
Haha, no no no! They're just well lit ;)
I have been painting minis for decades, back when citadel was all lead and made stuff for non-GW games. Even so, I learned new techniques from your channel that helped me cut down the time it takes to paint my collection. Always something new to be learned. I recommend this channel to all my painting friends.
Thanks so much for recommending us Howard! I was painting back in those days too, haha
I've found if you mix equal parts Typhus Corrosion and Blood for the Blood God it makes a really good old, crusty gore effect, perfect for nasty weapons and old wounds
Thank you so much Guy!! This Video helped me so much. Just got Back in 40k and started kill Team with some Friends. My thousand sons where meh. But thanks to your Guide, my gellerpox Team turned awesome
I think these are best result you've had so far, absolutely stonking results there.
Aw, too kind!
Aha! Oh, man! I just finished painting all the terrain which came in the box! Dont tell me you gonna make a video about that too! Because I will have to re-paint!! haha! Thanks a lot! Rogue Trader is a great box, lots of value and game play. You can even play Space Hulk in there!
That's true! The double sided board gives you quite a lot of possibilities for playing different styles of game, too.
Just treated myself to the Gellerpox kill team box, i'm for sure going to paint these up like this and then include them with my equally stinky and smelly death guard
You should check out kibosh he is a kit bash /scratch builder youtuber he doesn't have his models painted and with how great your paint jobs are a collaboration between you too would be insane
So when you were a kid, did you stop and think that when you grew up, you'd be teaching people how to paint scale model maggots? I don't remember that being an option in career counseling.
I was literally saying that the other day! I wouldn't have taken a 15 year break if I'd have known it was an option ;)
Ye best start believing in tabletop games Ms. Turner, you're in one!
Be careful about watching the swirling paints too closely. This is one way the Warp taint gets you.
Too late D-:
Who's here in 2024?
It's beautiful ! I mean,gross, but beautiful... ""Grossiful"? "Breauss" ? ... Awesome, it's awesome!
Yay!!! Christmas has come early!! :) Cheers Guy!
Woohoo! Got there eventually, eh? :)
this isnt even a hobby of mine but it was damn interesting to watch. Good job!
Nurgle demons are the funnyest to paint for sure...
Totally, gross and cute, the perfect mix
I've got a whole bunch of John Carter minis that I got through Kickstarter.I've been too scared to paint them yet...but this...this gives me hope.
Oh man, they look like really fun models!
Just rewatched this, did Guy come up with his own contrast medium?! 👏🏻
Have to say Guy these look revoting so will not be adding them to my Nurgle Chaos Marines1
Haha, it would be an interesting project to "heal" these models with green stuff to make them cleaner :)
What do you think about Vallejo THINNER MEDIUM or Vallejo Glaze Medium?
I haven't actually tried either! Sorry
Brilliant video, really inspirational! They look amazing! Would love to see a video for the Starstriders too!
I'm sure I'll have an awesome Starstriders video in the new year :)
Awesome video thank you!
I am a noob and this is the exact workflow I want to use and speaks to my mind better (coming from a digital 3D modeling/texturing background).
Even though I use an "official" thinner, the problem I face is that I somehow, either have too opaque paint (covering the highlights), or too transparent paint (requiring dozens of layers) :-( I hope to get it right one day.
Thanks again for the dope video.
Happy you found it useful! Getting the mixture right takes time and a bit of patience, but you'll get there :)
I've never played kill team even though i own the rule book for it but the Models themselves like the Gellerpox look fantastic.
Definitely give Kill Team a go! It's quite fast and fun. The set up almost takes longer than the game :)
Thank you very much for another excellent and very inspiring video which helps me to believe, that it could be possible to paint all my stuff stored in a closet during one human life. And maybe to buy some more.🤔😁👍I especially appreciate slower speed of speech(comparing to previous videos). Thank you very much. Keep well.
No problem Miloš! Glad you found it useful :) Happy I'm not the only one with too much to humanly paint ;)
Hey Guy, thanks for showing this technique. As I am new to the hobby (just started to paint BSF, inspired by you), I have a question about the DIY thinning medium you mixed. Do you think it could be used instead of water in your previous videos?
Definitely! You'll get a very similar result in most cases, but when heavily thinning to create thin, tinting colours, it'll work very nicely.
Where did find the Rabbit of Caerbannog?? Google came up empty, unless you want the blood soaked hand puppet. *giggle* BTW - your vids and painting skills are spectacular.
Thanks so much, matey!
Excellent, as always. I only disagree that chasing perfection can be fun...when done the smart way. Like do it on one amazing important leader model. Not the shoe laces of the scrub 9th man of a 20 man unit or something like that, right? :D Seriously though, love this video and all the way it got done up quickly.
Thanks mate! Yeah, if it's going to be showcase piece, spend a bit of time, but for the grunts, just get 'em done! :)
I think I'm going to use this scheme with some of the poxwalkers I have hanging about. Any recommendations for cheap black and white spray primers? I use Optima grey primer for less than £3 a can and want to get away from citadel's £10+ sprays.
I use Halfords primers! They're made by HMG, who made the original Citadel paints back in the 90s. The more you know ;)
Gellerpox infected, when you need a Nurgle Demon Prince, Chaos Spawn, and everything in between.
Yeah, pretty good value actually!
Where's Penny and where's the stopwatch?
Imo, I'd use more copper and brass and less chrome on these, but you did a really good job, just not showing how long each level took.
Do you varnish your minis?
Hah, the stopwatch only goes up to 99 minutes, good for single models, not so good for big projects :) I don't usually varnish my minis, but I do for terrain
Awesome Miniatures. Tabletop standard? Oh Hell No....
Better? Worse? I'm not sure, haha
Great video. Really helped me with some chaos spawn I was painting up for my death guard. Dead skin is tricky and I don't like the typical green plaguebearer look.
Yeah, that comic book green look doesn't suit everything :)
I paid slightly more than 8 pounds for my matte medium, but that's probably because it came in a fancy glass bottle. Echoing Guy here, it's seriously worth the slight expense, if you're more than just slightly into painting small dollies.
Oooh! Glass bottle! Fancy-pantsy!
I stoped "the hobby" because of lack of time. But watching you paint is so relaxing I might start again.
Do you also do videos where you go all out, like the oposite of speed painting. Would be fun to watch I think
Yeah, I think I'll make a video or two this year where I spend WAY longer on a mini, to see the difference it makes.
Also... I saw you have GKR! Have you thought about painting the support mechs?
I'd really like to, yes!
This is so much better than blocking out all the base colors. It’s quicker and looks better too. I might try this on some poxwalkers. Could this technique be used effectively on armor?
Thanks Caleb! Yeah, I think it should work pretty well on armour too, just remember to try to be smooth with your drybrushing :)
How is this even possible? I get off the phone with a friend who is learning how to paint, talking about how most videos show Zenithal wrong (because they start with painting the whole model black instead of just from the bottom) and who posts the first video I've seen where its done correctly? Well thanks for that (not to mention a great video I've been waiting for like a Christmas Present.)
You shouldn't think so loudly, I can hear you from here ;)
Hey!
Great work! I really like your paintwork.
I wonder if it would be cool to use that paintscheme on a great unclean one?
Blessings
Sam
I bet it would look great!
I am really glad I stumbled upon your channel. Excellent work, videos are well done, and you can actually see everything, and the content is awesome. Subed!
Thanks so much! Glad to have you on board :)
Fantastic result in such a short time - what surprises me the most is how the skin looks quite clean and no drybrush strokes can be seen after the shading.
I tend to use highlighting and layering to bypass drybrushing as it takes a lot of glacing afterwards to get rid of the drybrush look - especially for models that I might take to a tournament and a best painted army competition.
Any tips you would like to share how that drybrush step came out so well? Or is it just the video that helps to cloak those brushstrokes?
I think the most important thing to remember while speedpainting is to paint in batches - no change of colour and paint enough minis at the same time, that the first one is dry as soon as the last is finished. From my experience thats somewhere between 5 and 20 :-)
Great video!
I think the reason it look so smooth is because there's black, grey, and white in there, and then it's filtered with the paint, which helps smooth it all out :)
@@MidwinterMinis I will give that a try next time - thanx
Currently no minis at home, need to wait for more released fallout minis :D
Do you think you could use this technique with space marines? Would be good to trial it. Going to give it a go with one of my 1998 Genestealers.
What a classic sculpt, I still have lots of them!
Hey, I am new to this hobby and was thinking about getting a set of some necrons . I was wondering @3:48 you show this page with colour schemes and I wanted to know where is that from, does that come with a set or is that like a book you purchased. I kinda want to some of the lore units like there is this one video where this guy painted a Kill Team Necron Immortal of the Exalted Scythe. Basically is there some type of gallery of information packet out there where I can see these variations?
Hey mate! Those pictures are in the Gellerpox Infected codex which comes in the box game Kill Team: Rogue Trader. You can actually pick up just the book for relatively cheap on ebay!
Again a brilliant video. At first I thought oh they look a bit advanced... But no!
I'm going to have to watch this again for a few nurgle tricks.
Totally! Nothing advanced here, just simple tricks and painting stuff in the right order :)
Wish I had the talent to do this, they looked amazing. I'm awful at painting so I've never bothered to try, nice work.
Give it a go! You can only get better :)
Sorry, English is not my native language - why did you added in matt mediun water and dish soap? Water - I can understand - to thin matt medium, but soap?...
Your English is great! I add soap to change the surface tension of the mix. It makes it move towards the crevices and recesses :)
How do you handle those Hard to reach areas on the minis?! Paint what you see, or are you so steady that you can paint them without messing up the surroundings?! (Like me 😭)
If things are too hard to reach, I tend not to bother. If someone picks up speed painted models and super-analyses them for missed bits... well, they're probably not worth talking to in the first place ;)
Watching this while assembling 10 dryads. Damn they are bloody sharp, was using a rusty blade to remove mould lines and I drew blood on the plastic rather than the metal hahah.
Tell me about it! I had almost no skin on my thumb left after a few days assembling the new Necromunda box and KT:RT, hah
Nice. Is your pallet primed grey? Or is it something else and why. Awesome videos.
It IS primed grey! Well spotted. Watch my old video "The secret to cleaning palettes" video to find out more. ua-cam.com/video/sHcdCw4XOmU/v-deo.html
New to the hobby! And love the easy way you explain painting! Gives me motivation and confidence to try things on my own!
do you ever have adhesion problems when thinning your paint down to a 1:1 ratio like that? Also do any particular dish soaps work better than others?
Not that much, it tends to be very forgiving when it's thinned, and easy to fix mistakes because it's not too opaque :)
Did u prime and zenital Highlight with an Airbrush or with rattlecans?
Btw great tutorial have to watch ur other vids!
Always rattlecans! I very rarely use my airbrush for this channel :)
I love this technique of black, gray and white basing - you've got me inspired to try this out - love the colour scheme you chose for the gellerpox
Thank you! It helps to get colour inspiration from cool pictures, films, album covers, stuff like that :)
Yeah boi marionville models! I dont play warhammer but they are super nice and have a bunch of paint stock
Give Ricci a high-five from me next time you see him :)
Many thanks for the medium recipe!
By the way, do you varnish your minis at all?
Hmmm, not often. I usually varnish terrain though, because it just gets chucked in a box, hah
How long do you wait for each spray to dry before applying the next one? 20mins in between?
Haha, I'm too impatient, I just do it immediately. Never caused any problems so far :)
... that's it! I'm now on your patreon .... take my money! lol seriously I believe this is one of the best sites for 'good old' down to earth painting tutorials ... no BS! no 'you must buy this xxx£ piece of kit ... etc.. etc.. well done to you Guy & penny

I don't play killteam, but I learned a lot in this video . Super useful thanks!
I don't often play Kill Team either, to be fair, haha
never gonna play killteam, but this gave a lot of ideas for that horde of poxwalkers I keep hoarding
Nice! This would really suit Poxwalkers :)
Ok I asked for grimdark poxwalkers and you've given us this! Thanks guys and hurry up with the album 😉
Haha, glad to be of service!
Oh I already own citadel contrast medium would that do the same job as your diy medium?
Fantastic video! What brush(es) are these. The wider one for the layering looks great
They're either Royal & Langnickel or Artist's Loft Gold Taklon brushes :)
Are there any models with a similar aesthetic that don't come as part of an 80 quid box set?
Hmmm, not really! These are pretty unique. You could always get the box and sell the game pieces, and the individual units of the opposing force and probably break even! :) The dog on its own goes for a tenner!
Hi love the video. Noob question here did you thin the technical paints to or just straight from the pot?
Straight from the pot! :)
If your struggling with smaller areas that are metallic. Use a metallic sharpie. Works a treat.
Nice idea! I might grab one at some point
I love these minis…. I have just decided to get into killteam … maybe these will be my first team!
They're very fun to play.
First video of yours I've watched. Great stuff, I learnt a bunch :)

Love your painting technique.. You guys, 7th Son, Frazer and Sonic have inspired me to paint my models. The thing I’ve learnt, is not to think about it too much and just do it. You will surprise yourself. I’ve picked up the paint thinning and large brush tips from you. Thanks 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🐿.
Love the channel and have rekindled my 30+ years love of all things wargaming.
Currently collecting AOS with the boy BUT after watching your Rogue Trader Gellerpox Infected, I would love to venture into 40K. Would I need the Starter set, or can I just pick up RTrader?
KT:RT is a stand-alone game, with all the rules you need to play in it if you just fancy "dipping your toe" :)
@@MidwinterMinis I questioned it because some listing say Starter Set and other an Expansion and you need core rules.
Your videos have shown up a lot for me but this video made me subscribe. Thank you.
Woohoo! I finally got you :)
Great vid - been waiting for this since you finished the core box of Blackstone Fortress 😁 I really like the colour scheme here, I don’t usually mix paints or add medium but this has convinced me to give it a go as I want this look for my Gellar Pox 😁 looks like my original first project of 2020 (Fallout Wasteland Warfare) just got bumped to second project 😂 would love to see you do some Dark Souls 👍🏻
Haha, I apologise to Fallout! I love the game series, I wonder if I'd also like the tabletop version?
Midwinter Minis Fallout video games soaked up major parts of my life running around the wasteland looking for a certain type of material so I could build a gun 😁 I have not yet played the tabletop version but it looks very good - and solo which is a massive bonus for me 👍🏻
@Midwinter Minis I find that a mixture of water, Hull red, and a brighter red not necessarily red orange almost race car red tends to work quite well for dried blood
7 Mins in and a prsoitive Like and subscribe. learn't so much :)
Woo! Welcome to the party mate :)
Very good tutorial. Instead of regular dish soap, use a product called Fantastik cleaner (spray bottle) and add that to thin your Vallejo and GW paint, as well as that medium mix u made. I use it exclusively for airbrush thinner/cleaner, mixed down 3:1 with boiled/cooled water. Available as a kitchen cleaner in major box stores. I use so much of it I go for the 4 liter option. Don't know whats in it, but it thins my acrylic paint nicely, breaks surface tension without foaming, cleans my airbrush, doesn't smell too intense and I use it around the work area too. Cheap as chips.
Just realized I get so excited over a good tutorial, I start handing out tips. Silly wabbit.
Thanks Martin! I'll keep an eye out for it :)
Do you get your cheap brushes from The Works. I think I've got some of those
I do get some of them there, yeah!

Continue with your work, you help a lot of my friends to say motivated on painting, you are da best there is!
Thanks so much Carlos! Glad you found me at the open day :)
Can you explain what sort of consistency, thickness are you looking for when mixing your colours with the thinner ? I've been trying to apply your method to some other Nurgle models (putrid blightkings), butI struggle with getting the right paint consistency. Should it be similar to washes/shades, or more thick, like some of the new contrast paints ?
It's tricky, as each paint is a different consistency, so will require more or less. I'll be doing a video on a quick "hack" to make sure you're thinning correctly. Watch out for it in early January :)
@@MidwinterMinis Thanks ! Going to keep an eye on that ! I managed to get a decent looking sick zombie skin on my Putrid Blightkings, using your tutorial in the end. But will definitely need to practice the thinning. Big fan of your method though.
