    Great content Carl, I have owned 47 motorcycles in 55 years, my first GSA 1250 a 2021 year. you are definitely filling in all the tech gaps BMW does not give us owners. BMW should be supporting your channel you are doing their work and deserve much credit ! We will be watching and recommend your channel to others ! Again thanks and well done !

    Thank you Carl. The slot I’m talking about was specifically designed under the seat to take the Abus U lock (minus the Lock) If you can imagine after removing the seat you could just insert the U section into the special bay just over the rear light. So useful.

    I've got BMW cars and I'm looking at buying one of their bikes. It's cool to know that the bikes also have this feature. On my current bikes they don't have any adjustment or augmentation to the headlight when cornering, so the inside goes dark. I hate it. Great to know the BMWs and some other manufactures now compensate for this. I will say the adaptive lighting tech on their cars does quite well at keeping the beams perfectly level when going over bumps and it turns the light into the corners which provides incredible visibility. If this tech works on the bike as well at it does on their cars it's going to be a game changer riding at night for me when I eventually get on of their bikes.

    Great video, I knew the headlamp followed the road according to going round corners but didn’t realise how much was going on in the headlight unit so thanks for the insight to how it works. Also the info for setting up the ancillary spot was very much appreciated.

    Thanks for your videos. I am slowly looking from going from a 2011 1200 GS all the way to a 21 or newer 1250GS. So your videos are super useful for a wannabe 1250 buyer/owner.
    Up till now I've held back from upgrading as I really like the last of the oil/air cooled. I am beginning to think I am missing some good features and your videos are the reason.

    Carl, that is the best description of how the BM lights work that I have seen online. I hadn’t picked the side to side movement and no one else has mentioned this at all. I am a bit of a light nut and have better than excellent lights on my car soI fitted a Cansmart and a pair of Baja Designs Squadron Pro lights to the R1250GS and the lights are good although because we have a lot of hopping wildlife in our country (Australia) travelling at night on a bike is generally unwise. Keep it coming. Geoff

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Geoff, I can imagine you have to be very careful at night or not go out on a bike. We have not the same problem... but something similar. Here in Hessen/Germany we have more trees and forest areas per Sq-Km than Switzerland and with that comes lots of wild Boars and Deer, so we too have to be careful at night. I will have a look at the lights you suggested. Thankyou Carl

      @@justthewayitis Did 546 miles yesterday in 8hrs 15 mins and loved it. Not without issues - headlights initially set too high and I could not adjust them as knob is far too stiff. Dealer had to take the headlight unit apart to adjust and now set too low….and cornering lights now do not work. However these are minor points. Very comfortable, great engine, best wind protection, stable at all speeds (unlike KTM!)….downsides, top heavy, will swap tyres for more street orientated, dash does not show odometer or trip meters all the time which is annoying…(Triumph dashes have always been rubbish..this is better but still not great)

      Hi Norman, hopefully Triumph will quickly resolve these issues and it's quite normal with a completely brand new model to have little things that need attention. The key thing is your happy with the Tiger. I am going to send an email to Triumph uk asking if they can help with arrangements for a 3-5 days test of your bike for me here in Germany. If you adjust the aux lights in your garage, be careful about adjusting them too high. Took numerous high beam flash "hints" for me to find out that you need to shine them at a target 15-20ft away to account for the parallax error of their offset position while aiming.

Having owned lots of different makes and models over the years fast forward to now after test riding different bikes I've been interested in I came to a decision to trade in my 2005 1200gs for a new 2023 BMW r1250gs Rallye. Like a lot of people I just wanted to check some more bike reviews ect... on the GS and I stumbled my way on to your channel. I've got to say to you how much I enjoy your reviews and content, absolutely brilliant!!! If I lived in Germany I'd even see if I could join you and your mates for some ride days 😎. The main to things that stick in my mind after test riding the Rallye are the motor and handling can't wait to get it. Again let me say thanks for your excellent videos, just love the way you explain things and how professional you are. I never leave comments but your case I had to tell you how much I enjoy your content. Really enjoying your R1250GS videos. Very informative and always well explained. I have a 2022 GS and watched your vid on the combined indicators/brake lights/running lights with interest. Do you have some doubts about the adaptive lighting? I am looking at used GS/GSA and am unsure if MY2020 should be considered since they do not have adaptive lighting. Some reviews say installing quality and powerful fog lights provide far more lighting than the adaptive light. That being said, I think after market fogs lights do not have a cut off and can blind oncoming traffic.

      Hi Ridemfast, good evening, if ordering new I would have adaptive lights, but buying used I would have other priorities like mileage, condition, Dynamic ESA and such. Many owners report they really like the additional lights that make a big improvement over original. I hope this helps.. which ever you buy I'm sure you will have fun adding accessories. Very interesting video you explain things very well.
    Although quite a bit improved from my 2018 GS with LED headlights, I was tempted to perhaps trade in my bike for a brand new 2023, but a lot of them right now in the market, have retrofitted with halogen headlight because of chip shortage, which is unfortunate because I believe this Upgrade is quite interesting for night driving. I will keep mine maybe a year or two longer as I just did the big 2 year maintenance.

      Hello SB, yes quite a few GS/A bikes built and sold in 22/23 don’t have the adaptive headlight which is a real shame. BMW are slowly recalling some of them to refit the newer headlight but it’s going to take another year to recall all the bikes I think.

    We rented a 2020 1250GS for our 10 day vacation in Greece. Both me and my wife were extremely happy with the bike. I got an offer from my dealer for a 2023 1250GS, which is going to be available spring next year, but I only have a few days to decide. I am going through your videos to help me reach a final decision. Unfortunately adaptive LED headlight is not an option.

      Hello Mifili, and welcome to the channel, have they offered to retrofit the adaptive headlight when it becomes available? (Triumph are currently offering this service on their new 1200) ... if that answer is a no, the question is how much riding you and your wife might do at night. The adaptive headlight is VERY good, and if you ride at night on country lanes it is simply brilliant. But....if it's not available is that reason to not buy the GS ?.
      Good luck with your decision and which colour option might you choose...

    Hi Carl, I'm a new GSA owner (Will be here soon/ordered), and a technician in the media industry, so I am finding your videos spot on for my new found "research project". I like to really dig into the details of these things, some prior to purchase to get me started with the "what is it", and some post purchase for the "why and how", after all, this is why we have heated garages for the off season, yes? So we have plenty of room for disassembly and see how it all works, before reassembly into the final re-worked project that comes out as somewhat of a monster that all your riding buddies want to know about, hahaha Great content, glad I found your series, (subscribe-CHECK!)

      @@justthewayitis Carl, I am not a fan of many of the color choices that come out of BMW Germany, so I decided on the Triple Black, and even then the bike will spend most of the next couple months being somewhat dis-assembled so many parts can be powder coated. I decided to go with 99% Black to make it different than most of the stock bikes, with a few small parts in different colors to break up full monotony and create interest/distraction. It is hard to make a GSA look different than the one its parked next too, but I have a plan. This is my relaxing passion to plan the project out with my down time while traveling for my work, and come home to the delivered boxes in my garage to build a unique vision. Hello Rusty and thank you for your comments. Maybe in the future I might do this, but the main reason I chose the Navi 6 over everything else is the wiz wheel the bmw control. I absolutely have to be able to zoom in and out of a map or route without taking my hands off the controls. I quite often lead on bigger tours, so this one feature is a must for me. Yes the XT is probably better at most things... but being able to instantly zoom in and out when approaching for example road diversions and being able to quickly look at my options is very important... especially if there's 9 other bikes behind me... smile.

    Hey Carl tonight before i watched this video i performed the basic head light adjustment test as i have learned in the past years as a automotive tec and that is
    Determine center of headlight height and mark it on a wall then make a second mark on the ground 25 feet in front of the mark on the wall
    The head light when properly adjusted should be on the mark on the wall
    Mine is below and my suspension was on the low position as i raised the bike i could see the head light also making adjustments in the upward direction and if i bounced on the seat the heat light would make it to the mark on the wall
    But i wonder how the head light is adjusted at the factory mine just seems low on low beam to me

      Hi Paul, good morning, thank you for sharing your own experience as a tech, with regard to the headlight alignment. When I checked mine on arrival it was very high on low beam, and the auxiliary lights were much to high, so I don’t think there is an alignment check at the factory before shipping to customers. I would imagine the headlight supplier is responsible for supplying the unit pre-set to save costs. Which as we both know means the alignment is unlikely to be correct when delivered.
      With your 40+ years in the trade I imagine you are looking ahead to having more spare time to do the things you love most. I wish you a happy motorcycle riding season ahead.

    Hi Carl, I discovered your channel just a few days ago and I am very pleased. I own a BMW R 1250 GS 2022 and would like to adjust my aux lights with my main headlight. Do you have a video on the subject?
    Thanks for your precious infos.

      Hi Marc, welcome to the channel and Hello to Three Rivers. No I do not have a video for this, but the simplest way is as follows.
      First make sure you are happy with the height of your Main Dip Beam light.
      Then ideally use your garage door and at night mark the Horizontal line that the headlight beam makes onto the garage door with tape.
      Then turn on your Aux lights and adjust them to just UNDER the tape line and make sure they are evenly matched from left to right.
      I hope this helps Marc.
      Best wishes Carl

      Hi Simon, I bought the bike because it's so good at so many things, and I was completely wrong about the GS. My multistrada is quicker just about everywhere..... buttttt, I think with decent tyres and a little bit of adjustment it will be closer. I'm a little sad someone might think I bought a bike for UA-cam.... my next video will have very very low views.... it's a 1980 Yamaha xt, but I'm making it because I'm interested and not because of subscribers. Hi Andrew, congratulations on your soon to arrive GSA.
      With regard to headlight protection in some countries it’s not allowed so make sure you are aware of any local laws that restrict you from fitting one.
      Then you have lots of choices. I decided on one from WRS in Italy 🇮🇹 as I wanted something discrete and simple, but there are lots to choose from. I think I put the part number in one of the video description in the 2 accessories videos.

      Hello Seabiscuit, the best way is out on a lane or quite road at night, that's how I set mine up. This way you can choose between both set parallel or one set slightly lower.

    I really like your videos as well as your excellent and clear narration. I would like to mention that your use of the term “Angle-of-Attack” in this video is not correct. You should have used the term “Angle of Incidence” which may be more appropriate. These two terms are mostly used in aviation (for aerodynamic purposes). The Angle of Attack is the angle between the chordline of the wing and relative airflow during flight. This angle is very critical to the success of the flight, too large of an angle of attack (~18 degrees depending on the airfoil) will cause the wing to stall and the plane departing controlled flight. However, the Angle of Incidence is part of the design of the aircraft, and it is fixed (at least something the pilot cannot mess with 😊). It is the angle between the same chordline of the wing and the longitudinal axis of the fuselage.
    For many years motorcycles light beams had a fixed angle of incidence, even so some could be manually adjusted up or down, as long as you had a spanner (wrench for the yanks). For a few years now, and thanks to the BMW engineers who have packed so much electronics in our bikes, we now have “Drive-by-wire” angle of incidence light beams. This should be enticing me to drive at night since I paid $400.00 for this option, alas my wife says it is not safe. It is even less safe at night since the introduction of Tesla models (sans Lidar, thx Elon!) which cannot detect motorcycles in front of them. Recently in the western US, two motorcyclists have been rear-ended and killed by Tesla cars driven under FSD. Watch your arse if followed by a Tesla 😊

    Hi Carl! Stumbled across your channel last night and snuck in several of the R1250GS episodes. I do follow a lot of UA-camrs and have even started my own little channel to capture some of my Moto-memories. Your channel is excellent and just what I needed. That fact that you are a retired tech/engineer brings so much credibility to the content (well done). Question for you given your expertise and perhaps content idea if you think the topic has legs. My 2021 GS (Triple Black) is the mechanical love of my life. I'm coming off an RT and am about to retire myself and wanted the GS as my travel partner for the next several years. One issue/question I have, in 4th gear at around 3,500 RMP's (+/- 300), there is some kind of strange throbbing harmonic resonance (wa-wa-wa...) that is similar to low rev lugging but I'm sure it's not. I can 'work around it' but I find this is a common speed and prefer not to. The tech at my dealer says I should ride in the 4-5K rev range which is fine but also a little more intense than the casual meandering I prefer. I also feel I shouldn't have to work around this anomaly on a $30K ($CAD) bike. Have you ever heard of such a thing and what is the ideal rev-range for the modern day boxer (lot's of schools of thought out there). At highway pace, the 4-5K is gloriously smooth I will admit but 3-4K just makes more sense around town. Thanks again for the great content. Rich

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 роки тому

      Hi Rich and welcome to the channel. Next time I go out on the GS I will do a test at that engine speed and see if I can hear or feel anything and report back. But my question is are you sure it's not tyres...try changing down a gear and go back to that RPM and see if it's there. The Wa wa sound you describe is quite often tyres especially the large groved type tyres fitted to the gs as standard.
      As to engine speed its generally agreed to try move up and down the rev range so the engine is not at a constant rpm. I also trundle along sometimes and find the gs happy just about everywhere.
      Carl

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 роки тому

      Hello Road night, , I had time and good weather today to check what you have obversed with your GS. Sorry to report I could not detect or hear anything unusual at the rpm range you mentioned. I even stopped and removed my ear plugs and opened my viser to make sure. All I could detect was tyre hum... That comes from the Anakee Adventure tyres.
      Have you tried at different speeds and gears?
      Best wishes Carl

      @@justthewayitis thanks for following up on this. Appreciated. It’s definitely not the tires. I’m chalking it up to ‘boxer charm’ and hoping the the 20k km service valve adjustment irons it out. It only occurs in 4th gear and and that specific rev range so will continue to work around it sadly. The BMW tech just told me to drive at higher rev ranges. He referred to the tachometer as the ‘fun meter’. Thanks again and be well! Rich

      Hi Carl! Just wanted to follow up on this. Had the bike in for it’s 20k service. As you know it’s a big one. I also had the the Road 5’s replaced with Anakee Adventures. Not sure what the tech did (maybe the valve adjustment or servicing the drive shaft?) but my weird throbbing ‘resonance’ has disappeared. You suggested it may have been the tires which is also a possibility. All that said, it’s gone! And I am happy. I hope you are well and keep the content coming. That last on on Ride modes was a doozy! Loved it.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 роки тому

      Hello Rich, I'm very happy to hear that the issue is gone. It's a shame you dont know what fixed it, tyres, valve adjust or rear shaft inspection and re-grease. But it's gone which is the most important thing. I don't think it would have anything to do with valve adjustment... so its was either tyres or shaft. I wish you lots of fun on your super smooth GS.

    I currently have a triumph T120 black and i love BUT i want to go touring again.
    I had a yamaha FJR1300 and loved it but that was 12years ago so times have changed.
    I actually did not consider the GS to expensive too heavy too gig to tall for me (29”) inside leg but said to no i should go to a dealer and get some information about the bike speak to a salesman and see what the bike is like.
    Well he pulled out a GS 1250 Treble black LOW SEAT and i was sold totally flat footed so test drive in a few weeks.
    Thanks for the videos really helpful the info the better

      Hi John welcome to the channel, the GSA does have taller longer travel suspension, the GS is a little lower, plus you can have a low seat fitted (as you have seen) but also they have a low suspension version which is also great if you need extra security with your feet firmly on the floor.
      Mine is a standard GS Ralley so when I’m alone on the bike I have the seat set to high, with just the balls of my boots on the ground, but when riding two up I lower the seat so that I have almost flat boots on the road.
      Have fun on your road test 😉

    I would love to try these lights out on the serpentine roads that lead to my little house up a Greek mountain. The road bends 180 degrees and the inclination is 20 degrees. I thought of fitting a driving light attached to the front mud guard to see around the bend as the main lights shine in completely the wrong direction. I doubt whether these are retro fittable to my 19 model.
    You also mentioned the pitching of the bike during braking and acceleration. Obviously this is minimal on the GS with the telelever and paralever set up , but this would make a nice topic for a video?
