For the viewers in North America: I'm talking UK miles per gallon which is an Imperial Gallon = 4.55 litres. which converts to approximately 44/45 US miles per gallon. I do apologise for not making this clearer as I do have a lot of followers in NA I should have known better and put that conversion on the screen. Also the various standard fuel maps of which there are 5 on the 2021 onwards bikes and the different emissions regulations between a Global GS and a NA GS, all play a part in a slight variation between our motorbikes real world fuel economy. kindest regards Carl
Excellent review Carl as always. The only thing I disagree with is I think the R1250 GS and GSA are beautiful bikes. I was a crew chief on A-10s and AH-64s, so my idea of mechanical beauty is a bit skewed, lol. I've pretty much added all the mods you've done to your bike after your review of them and you have been spot on with all of it. The products you review and recommend are never the "look at this latest and greatest farkle to waste money on", everything you suggest adds value (not monetary) to our bikes. I do appreciate your video on brakes and the Next 2's. Those two upgrades made a world of difference to my riding enjoyment. You always go into the technical details that other bike channels leave out, which are the ones I want to know about the most. You do it in such a competent manner and make the information easy to understand, you are one of the top YT bike channels in my opinion. Keep up the amazing work, your efforts are appreciated.
Good morning Correy, thank you for your kind words of appreciation. Don’t worry I still love ❤️ my GS ! . Finding a balance between what viewers want and attracting the right sort of viewer/ subscriber is not easy. I decided in 22 just to make videos that I would watch and share things I would like to understand and learn about. I know the channel is never going to be a huge success but im completely fine with that. An engineering buddy of mine was a tech on the Ah-64D at westlands , he had some interesting stories to share. Have a good week Correy Carl 🙋🏻♂️
I have a s1000rr and a r1m, both have full exhaust and carbon fiber all over. People rarely compliment on those, only other riders who knows bike do. But for the GSA, I get compliments all the time, from car drivers next to me, to people in the parking lots. I think it's impressive for more regular people 😅😅😅
Funny that you mentioned no one has complemented your GS looks. I purchased my 1250GS Rallye in 08/23 and have just 3K miles on it (so far). Multiple times I've had people comment on what a stunning motorcycle I had. Of course, "stunning" could mean several things... The GS looks aren't for everyone but *I* like them. I do stop and have a last look at the bike before I close the garage door. And BTW I do enjoy your videos.
Hi Steven, yes the garage and petrol station test. If we don’t turn back to have a look and think…. That’s a nice bike, we are probably on the wrong bike. Don’t get me wrong, I do love my GS but it’s just not the same experience as owning a Multistrada. Have a great weekend 👍
I have been riding for more than 40 years and have owned plenty of motorcycles from various brands and all types. I think my R1250GS HP is the best motorcycle I ever had.👍
As always a great video! No annoying, flashy clips, no over the top background music, no showing off.....just very enjoyable, educational and relaxed informative videos. Love it! Don't keep us waiting too long for that QS solution. That is most wanted! Mabye you can also do a full installation video of the Innov K5?
As a previous owner of a 2019 GSA and now a 2023 GSA i can certainly say that gearbox feels much different. The 2023 is much smoother even upshifting from 1st to 2nd.I guess they improved it!
Hi Carl, always a great delight to hear all this precise info on our favorite bike. Spot on! Anxious to have the episode on the gearbox assist clunkiness…I always use my clutch from first to third up & down. ( mechanical sympathy I guess )😂Our riding season will soon be here in Quebec. Ride safe, Marc 🇨🇦🏍😉
I own three recent model BMWs. R1250 GS, R1250 R and R nineT Scrambler. I have found that on average mods and accessories add a cost of about $3,500. Wunderlich tends to be most expensive. Touratech and SW Motech about same prices. Everything tends to start at prices of $150 and goes up to $600 on a unit basis.
Hi Stephen, good morning, thank you for sharing your own experience with accessories and costs. Which ever way we look at it, it’s a lot of money. Have a great weekend Kind regards Carl
Another brilliant video Carl, thank you for all the time you put into making these for us. As a UA-camr, I know how much work goes into making videos like yours. A note to US viewers who may think Carl needs correcting on fuel consumption. Carl is talking about the Imperial Gallon and NOT the US Gallon. The Imperial gallon is a unit of volume in the imperial system of units, where the US gallon is used exclusively in the United States. The imperial gallon is 20% larger than the US gallon. Please keep the amazing work going Carl. I for one am already looking forward to your next video. 😎
After decades of sports bikes I’m now on my 4th GSA. Subtle improvements are something I’ve always been aware of on these bikes, it’s as if BMW secretly wave their magic wand over them.
I ride 1250 RS and I definitely feel the cam shaft shifting, there is distinct push at that moment which is moving the bike and it is noticeable. I’m surprised you saying you don’t notice it at all. Indeed I don’t feel it in Road mode but definitely I do in Dynamic.
Hi Carl, great video in general. It would be awesome if that quick shift fix works. Can’t wait for the next video. Thanks for so much detail information 👌🏻
Another victory of BMW R1250GS ! Amazing 🤩 Now I am more towards R1250GS instead of 1300GS as it is really lots of money. Even higher than the devil Ducati Multistrada V4 ! Assuming that there will be shift to 1300GS and lots of second hand 1250GSs will be out there available.
Thanks Carl for another cracking video. I went into my local BMW dealer to see what they would offer me on my 22 plate 8k miles mint bike against a new 1300. £10k! I told them to shove it. Apparently the salesman says they can’t shift em on 😂😂
Hi Slip, try a different dealership, I’ve personally experienced a difference in trade in price of more than 3k between dealerships which is ridiculous… but great if you have time to shop around. Carl 🙋🏻♂️
Entertaining whilst very informative! Well done! Great to view a bike channel which doesn’t need a load of profanities or hyperbole! I have a 2018 GSA Rallye which is exactly what I wanted! Comfortable, great fuel range and more than ample power! At 6’5” and with dodgy knees I do however wish I could raise the seat still further, lower the floor pegs or both! I’ve never really mastered the Gear Shift Assist either. Try as I might I just can’t seem to shift up! I managed it a couple of times but thought it so crude I just reverted to old school clutch! Keep it up. Great channel!
Hi and welcome to the channel and thank you for your feedback 🙏. BMW do have adjustable foot pegs listed as an option for the 1300, but I’ve not yet been able to confirm they fit the 1250. You pop into your local dealership and ask. I’d love to know 👍 Carl
A former coworker buys wrecked GS bikes, rebuilds them, and sells most of them. He takes one on an annual ride down the Baja peninsula. During one of those annual rides, I believe on an 1150, he was about halfway down the peninsula when the rear suspension (standard equipment) broke. When he got back, he was in horrible shape. He said he would never again take that ride without a heavy duty suspension.
Hi Jay, many owners that do go off road regularly make changes to the suspension. Changes to improve quality and performance.Thank you for sharing your story 👍. Kind regards Carl
I too came off a MS, 2014. The only things I miss are the acceleration and the sound of the full Termignoni with Upmap. I based my decision on the BM's reputation, safety features and all the additional extra aids but the clincher was the 30l tank for extended touring range without the constant stops. I have GSA Trophy and enjoy it more each time I ride it. Roll on my 2 week tour to the Pyrenees at the end of April. Thanks for your upload.
I just got a 2023 GSA and it’s early days but so far it’s incredible. Had a CRF1100 adventure sport before it and the GS blows it away as a road bike anyway. Only downside is there was no heated seat available on my build due to a factory issue I won’t take it off road so will try some more road bias tyres when they’re due
Thanks Carl - and just to say I’ve found your channel Really informative while I was shopping for GS it helped a lot with the research on them. Especially the ESA and mode videos you did 👍
Thanks for a great review. I have the 2023 R1250GS Triple Black. I've been thinking about getting risers even though I am 6'2" '(~188cm). I have the seat low at the back and high at the front. What I didn't know was that the position of the pillion seat was adjustable as well. If I could move that forward that would be even better for my riding position because I use the stepped seat as a kind of back support. So I might not need the risers if I can move the pillion seat forward. I'll check it out after I finish typing 😀
Thanks for the great review. I have a ‘22 GSA and love it. So much that I keep considering the 1250RT as well. I don’t use the quick shifter often but when I do, mine works well on the upshifts, and seems to NOT want to work on the downshifts, so I don’t bother with it. I was surprised at your fuel economy until I saw your pinned comment… now I feel better as I’m solidly in the mid-40s (US) as well 😁
Hi Hogdriver, thanks for the feedback 🙏, yes I should mentioned the US figures in my video.. my mistake 🫣. Yes the QS is funny their seems to be 3 types of performance, those like you who have great upshift, owners like me that have great downshift, and some lucky owners have both. Smile 😊 Best wishes Carl
When you’re shifting up with the quick shifter, stay on the gas. Don’t roll the throttle off like you would normally do. I think you’ll find it shifts nicely.
Great video as always Carl very informative & interesting points raised, would be very helpful to share Edward’s modification on up shift on the gear shift assist pro, my curiosity has risen! Too notch 👍
Always liked my 1250GS (2019 Exclusive), it took me all over Europe during the three years I had it. Unfortunately, I didn't like the 1300GS and went on to buy a 2020 RS1250.
Mr. Carl, you are one of the best "additions" I have made to my '22 GSA ..... My gorgeous "Rhino", Kaethe ...... Thank you for the hard work and knowledge you give us !!!!! As far as "looks", there is an old Texas observation .... "She may not be much to look at, but she can cook !!" 🙂
Hi HangPilot, welcome to the channel, great news thank you for sharing. Most dealerships are very good, friendly and well informed, with a few that could be improved. Greetings from Germany, Carl
It’s the dealers that let BMW down. Once the warranty is finished they start to find lots of things to fix. When it’s under warranty, “they all do that”.
Carl - I think a R1250GS/R1200GS dedicated wind protection video is in order and would benefit from your approach. So many different windscreen options and configurations to solve what is very much the weak point of the GS platform. Short windscreens, tall windscreens, spoilers, etc. How to change windscreens, options, etc. and their effects on the riding experience 1-up and 2-up. Thank you!
Hi Chuck, great idea for a video thank you, I’ve not yet found the perfect setup but I have one more thing to try, if it works I’ll post the solution. Kind regards Carl 🙋🏻♂️
I've fitted the Puig touring screen ans reinforcement bracket, which works perfectly for me. For our regular 30c+ summers in Australia, I refit the OEM screen for added ventilation but otherwise the Puig is a great, very quiet & warm option.
Hi Carl, great informative video. I’m gonna go see Steve @ A bike thing once Hex release the rear light delete . I’ll happily pay him to turn front and rear running lights off and add me a M screen . New GSA metallic blue / black rallye arrived at the dealer today . I’m picking it up Tuesday and going to remove the rest luggage steals and convert to the vario set up . Cheers Pete 👍🤛👏
Great review. As far as the quick shifter, it seems to work fairly well on my R1250RS as long as I'm on the throttle for upshifts and off the throttle for downshifts. I have test ridden an R1250GS and it was significantly worse than my RS. I also agree with you on your take on the service notifications. It's a good thing.
Carl how about a in depth video on battery charging and battery maintaining via din or sae sockets with can bus chargers and conventional chargers I had a electrical issue where my starter wouldnt disengage i removed ground wire to starter BMW condemned my ECM I have no idea what or why it happened
Hi Craig, the first version was 1hour 18mins, so I had to chop a lot out , as always. I’d probably be more successful with a TV series 🙋🏻♂️ Thank you 🙏
@TallyHoTech not enough that’s for sure 10k which if I lived where you do it would be very different with your great seasons . Craig did you ride a different 13 ? Was it any better than a rubbish you first tried?
@@justthewayitis I have ridden 4 1300s now. I rode the Trophy X version this week. That is the enduro version with the taller sports suspension. It idled rough as guts but was fine otherwise. That one is not as stiff either. Shift assist was as usual. What’s this thing about the shift assist. That’s very interesting
I have watched all you videos since you got the 1250. Even BMW themselves couldn´t explain this bike better than you do. I wish i never got tempted to replace my 1250 GS with the 1290 SAS. Now i can´t decide whether to go for the 1300 or the 1250. But it will be a BMW again next time. Had a GIVI copy of the GSA screen on mine. I am 5´9 and it was perfect.
Hi Søren, thank you for your kind words. The 1290 SAS is a nice bike too, we have one in our bike club and the owner loves it. Too tall for me though, but it’s a B - - - -y fast bike. Thank you for the screen advice 👍🙋🏻♂️ Regards Carl
Ian enjoyed your review, as usual. As per cost, I think you were very kind to BMW. I had a 22 1250 GSA, and put a deposit down in April on the new Traumatana, in Houston the sale-man did not give an out the door price. I was told to go online and build the bike like I wanted. And send it to him. I did, except I could not add the panniers or the Nav unit from BMW. Plus I could not include the items like freight, un crating, assemble, taxes, etc. At the first of March he said he had one located and was getting it. I again pushed for a total price. The price came in over $38,7?? . I canceled my order, sold mt 1250 GSA for $6,000 more than trade in allowance. Took my $22k cash in hand and purchased a 2039 KTM 1290 SAS at a last year model discount of $16,499. I’m very happy with the KTM, love the power, handling, weight and response. There’s a limit to this price madness for me. Keep up the good job my wife and I watch every episode. David n Dee
Hi David and Dee, good morning and thank you 🙏. Yes the new bikes seem to be very expensive once you add all the options these bikes should really come with. My 2021 year model GS went up in retail price by 700€ just after I bought it, then another jump a few months later. I have a good friend who had a 1290 SA and he loves it too. Best wishes to you both. Carl 🙋🏻♂️
One thing that for me has been a problem, is that my feet get hot after a while. Your toes won’t be too far from the exhaust of the cylinders, so I purchased some foot protection. These were made to protect your feet from the rain, but they will also keep some of the hot air from your feet. I have never heard of this problem from anyone else though. Sometimes Ihve to stop and take off my boots and put my feet into a stream or lake.
Hi Carl, lovely review, just like others I’m looking forward to the potential quickshift fix - fingers crossed. Question: those small bags from the grab rails, do you have variopanniers and do they work together? The ones I find on eBay suggest they dont match with Vario panniers?
Hi Nigel good morning, I don’t own vario panniers, we have quite a few gs owners in the bike club so borrow them when needed. The bags probably won’t mount at the same time. But maybe one of the channel subscribers has both and can answer the question Carl
I enjoy your reviews very much. I own a BMW R1200GS Rallye 2017. My best bike ever except for the quickshifter pro. Hopefully you will discuss this topic using the information from Edward from The Netherlands. Maybe it also will apply to the 1200 lc. Thanks!
Hi Lavi, thank you for your feedback, and currently I’m happy with the 1250 and won’t be changing to the 1300, for the reasons I mentioned in my review. But the GSA might have some changes which could make a difference 🤔 Carl
Hi Karl, have you tried calibrating your quickshifter using the GS911. You can also use it to add 5 stage heated grips which for me was great as it only came with two stage
Thanks for sharing ,bought used 2017 last year. Love the bike hate the noise coming up from the front. 😮. Some is tire bridge stone which I am going to change. 😎🏍💨💨💨💨💨💨👍🏻🇨🇦🍻
Hi John happy Easter in Canada , yes the Bridgestone is the noisiest tyre option by a long way. A set of sports touring tyres removes 80% of the sound coming up the tunnel. Greetings 👋 Carl
My gsa sept 22 72 plate has the ability to turn off the comfort indicators however i find them fine i dont rely on them i still cancell myself but i like the fact if i forget it finally cancels them
Hi Austin, yes they do work ok but when your on tour leading a group of riders it’s a real pain that the system self cancels when in fact I want them to remain on so the group can see where we are going next. Also moving across 4 or 5 lanes of traffic I want them to stay on until I’ve completed the 4 lane changes. Not after the first lane change which currently happens. Lucky you if you have the ability to turn your off Best wishes Carl
Excellent video as always. Regarding wind flow, I added the Wunderlich wind deflector (clear) and found a noticeable reduction of airflow in the chest area, part # 20520-101. For me, it was a worthwhile addition.... also, will there be a follow up video on the Tourance Next 2 tires? Thank you!
Hi Kathryn, thank you 🙏. And thank you for the part number I will have look. 👍 The next report on the NT2 will probably be towards the end of the season but I’ve been really pleased with them . Kind regards Carl
Don’t bother with a GSA screen. I started with the original GSA screen but I can’t stand bufferting. Purchased a even larger touring screen and deflector. It was ok but not my thing. Then I purchased a small fly screen, problem solved. Clean air cog no noise 👍. For tall people go for a short screen.
Great videos Carl with strong technical content delivered in a pleasant manner. You’ve inspired me to go with a second windshield for dry/warm days out. Can you share a link for those windshield mount brackets you purchased from eBay ? Did you get the screws separately from BMW ? Cheers !
Hi Don, I have just spent an hour finding links for those owners that want to do a similar thing. So have a look in the video description at the bottom and you will find Amazon links for ( .COM and .CO.UK and .DE ) I have listed three geographical Amazon locations as you haven't mentioned which country you live in... smile. Please be aware that you will still need to purchase bolts, what I did was to remove the original BMW ones and take them to a local hardware store and purchased almost identical ones. I purchased Stainless Steel versions but I could have also bought Titanium from the store, lots of choices. I originally paid 19.95€ on eBay, but that supplier no longer lists them. I would imagine that its just one manufacturer in China that makes these, and then they are sold by various sellers across various platforms. I'm not 100% sure of this as a fact !! but its more than likely. Buying on eBay offers better prices, BUT if they don't work returning items is a pain. But with Amazon at least they can be returned if needed. Just my thoughts. Carl
@@justthewayitis that’s no problem Carl as I am not “precious” about my bikes, as I prefer to ride them. I still look after them and do clean after off-road rides but don’t spend hours polishing them like Harley riders who just go to the coffee shop ! lol 😂
On my 2021 GSA I had my self cancelling indicators disabled by my BMW dealer so it is possible without a GS-911, using my GS-911 I have turned off the front amber running lights so they just work as indicators only.
Some dealerships seem more willing to make changes to the software, lucky you. Also owners have reported having to pay extra to have this feature turned Off which is disappointing. However I'm pleased to hear your good news for both the self cancelling indicators and the amber front lights 👍
I use the clutch lever on upshifts unless I’m revving it out like 6-7k RPMs where I find it smoother in the lower gears. Still nothing like the Multi V4S I had though.
Interesting with the Gear Shift Assist Pro issues you mention - I have a 2019 GS Rallye & find upshifting absolutely brilliant, but in direct contrast to you the downshifting is very clunky. Go figure! I wonder whether Edward's solution will fix the issues for each of us??
Hi Carl, once again a super video! I have one question about the dashboard update. What do I need to do the dashboard update? Tahnks in advance for an answer.
Moc pěkné recenze a rady a postřehy, jedny z nejlepších co znám. Velmi rád je sleduji a to několikrát ...Super 🙂👍 Sám mám BMW R 1250GS 40letou výročku 2022♥
Hi Carl, another great video - thank you. Don't suppose you have a link to those Ebay screen mounts you mention at the 15-16 minute mark? Cheers from .au
Hi Carl, I took your advice and purchased a set of plastic brackets and covers for a second screen however I’ve really struggled to find a set of rubber grommets and wondered what solution you were able to come up with please? Please keep the videos coming 🙂
Hi Waggler, I think the part number you need is 46638557871 , call your local dealership and just confirm the number, they can post them to you if needed. I think they were around 9€ for a set of 4. Best wishes Carl
Dealerships are asking over $28k before fees for the 1300s here in FL, the used 1250 market is around $18-20k. Considering getting a 1250, do you think $18-20k is a good price for a 2020-2023 1250GS? Also they are mostly between 3-8k miles
Hi, yes that’s a big saving and a great bike too, try to find one that has the Adaptive headlamp, 7 Ride Modes and 5 levels of heated hand grip adjustment, the later should ensure you have the 2021 onwards year models which is a great bike. Price wise it’s hard for me to comment as I’m in Europe and secondhand values are different but it seems a fair price for one with low mileage. Let me know what you finally decide to buy, best wishes Carl
Hi Nick, I can confirm there is indeed more feel from the front of the 1300, the new EVO ESA is very different to our 1250 models. I have a video about this for later in the season 👍🙋🏻♂️ It’s raining ☔️ here
Nice video again, Carl! Perhaps it’s because I’m a woman with pretty long hair, but I have people coming over to talk to me quite regularly - and I also get quite a few looks when riding by. My bar risers come directly from BMW (though I haven’t felt the need yet to fit them). I tried various tyres over the 3 years I have my ‘21 GSA, and am currently using Michelin Road 6. Brilliant tyres, but I don’t know how they perform at extreme lean angles since I prefer to keep a decent safety margin (my lean angles tend to stay limited to 35-36 degrees - I very rarely go past that). My bike has remained issue free - the only annoying thing I find is that since I do a lot of engine braking, the transition from closed throttle to open throttle is often far too abrupt for my liking. I don’t know if that’s due to a design choice from BMW or due to the Euro5 regulations, but I am seriously considering having a professional ECU remapping done to my bike…
Hi Jessica, yes perhaps a software update may address the issue you mentioned. It’s worth a call to your dealership to ask ! Thank you for sharing 👍 Kind regards Carl
@@justthewayitis Hello Carl. I mentioned this issue a few times already at my dealership. The first time they said that cleaning the intake valves would fix that. They did so, it was brilliant for a day then it returned the day after. I asked them about it again prior to the last maintenance check and they changed something about the shift ratio and the fuelling (sadly I forgot what it was exactly). The first 3000km since were brilliant and I thought it was fixed, but now recently it returned. It isn’t very noticeable in Rain mode, but in Road and especially Dynamic it gets annoying. I do indeed hope that a software update will improve things. The mechanics at my dealership have expressed doubt about the benefit of ECU remapping on a GS(A) so if it turns out to be not necessary, I will have at least spared myself considerable expense.
Hi Yes, no problem. I use a clamp on the bars next to the mirror, then a Ram Mount extension, then on the top a mount that mates with the Inst360 camera. I also use a extension pole. Hope that helps Carl
Hi Carl! Thanks for the comprehensive report on the 1250GS. Information about the possibilities provided by the use of HEX GS911 is unexpectedly interesting. However I wonder if using this device to interfere with the factory settings of the motorcycle (to activate the sports screen, or change the operation mode of the heated grips, for example) will not lead to canceling of the warranty? Have you asked your dealer similar questions? All the best! Waiting for more new videos, Dmytro
Hi Dymtro, you are 100% correct, any changes to the OEM software results in no warranty. I’m going to cover this in the video as owners need to be aware of this before making changes. It seems even turning off self cancelling indicators via the gs911 unit voids our warranty, which is disappointing. Each owner will need to decide for themselves Kind regards Carl
I picked my new GSA 1250 Adventure bike up 1st march and I love it. It is the first Adventure bike I have owned. It is Just right for some long tours for me and the wife it will be brilliant. I have swapped my indicators to for the ones you have and they make a big difference in safety. But I have just spoke to someone today a UA-cam an and he was trying to extend his warranty for is 3 year old BMW 1250, and they said no because of the new indicators like we have. They said it is a modification and unless he puts the original ones back on they will not extend his warranty which I think is wrong and ridiculous. He has just done a video on it “ the black county biker” check it out. Love you videos so informative and interesting 👍
Hi Andrew, and congratulations on your new GSA, yes the indicator changes are a big improvement. My dealer hasn’t said a thing apart the from they think bmw should have done it in the first place. Thank you for your feedback on the channel, much appreciated 🙋🏻♂️👍
Fuel economy is affected by so many things, riding style, road surface, tyres, so perhaps it’s not the same for everyone, although one of the subscribers mentioned seeing over 70 mpg, while other mention regular low 40’s. What you currently get seems good 👍
Carl I went front Multistrada to gs , I love the Multistrada but it was a animal to ride smoothly in town etc , straight roads a beast . But the gs is so smooth in town and in the curves for me so comfortable and no fatigue on long journeys . The thing with these top range bikes are the service prices ! My car is cheaper to service than my bmw , but hey the price of pleasure 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 great vids Carl 👍
I think a lot has to do with the way I ride and the roads I ride. Here in Germany the roads are well surfaced and mostly empty, plus I carry a fair amount of corner speed.
It’s on the WRS website site and the one I have is called Rallye dark smoked tint👍 www.wrs.it/en/windscreens/249972-windscreen-rallye-wrs-dark-smoked-bmw-r-1250-gs-adventure-2018-2023-0806881054794.html?BM045FS
I’m a member in a bmw riders club and we have over 400 members, most of whom ride GS. No one I know gets more than about 40-42 miles per gallon, including my own 2022 1250GSA. Assuming you’re referring to 1 gallon as 3.75 liters, and 1 mile as 1.6 km, I have no idea what to make of the disparity with your stated fuel efficiency.
Hello Devdude, good evening and welcome, well the UK and USA gallon is completely different. So I'm talking UK miles per gallon which is an Imperial Gallon = 4.55 litres. which converts to approximately 44/45 US miles per gallon. So we are in the same area of MPG. I do apologise for not making this clearer as I do have a lot of followers in NA I should have known better and put that conversion on the screen. Also the various standard fuel maps of which there are 5 on the 2021 onwards bikes and the different emissions regulations between a Global GS and a NA GS, may all play a part in a slight variation between our motorbikes real world fuel economy. Greeting to you and your BMW riders club members kindest regards Carl
I have a 2023 1250 GS Trophy, and I consistently get 48 to 51, 52 MPG on US gallons. 2 lane highways doing mostly 50 to 65 mph and riding to get from point A to point B, with a purpose, not "for fun". People that ride for fun get much worse MPG's, due to their riding style. They are not riding for economy.
Can't wait to pick my 1250 GSA. End of April. I tested 1300 and it's a great bike but somehow it lost her "GS" personality. Too "mainstream" for me in terms of how it looks. However, from other points of view 1300 is better than 1250. At least on paper...
Hello Carl. I have recently bought a two year old GS and just wonder why when you activate Hill Start the brake light doesn’t show. It only comes on when you operate the hand lever or rear foot brake. Just seems illogical. Your thoughts?
Hi, great question, but you already know the answer 😉. They (the designers) believe it’s a handbrake, so just as we find in every car… when you operate the handbrake the brake light doesn’t come on. Great question 🙋🏻♂️though Kind regards Carl
@@justthewayitis Thank Carl. Yes I guess that makes sense but my cars have hill start assist which means you have to keep your foot brake depressed for the engine to stop, hence the brake lights are on during this process. Road users get used to drivers in front keeping their car stationary by the foot brake. I guess I would still like to see the brake light come on. Any rear bright illumination when you are stopped can’t be a bad thing.
@@justthewayitis yes let’s hope so especially as BMW and many manufacturers no longer actually fit handbrakes in preference to what I consider a uneccesary button that you would rarely use at traffic lights. So I think their parking/handbrake theory doesn’t make sense. Thanks again. John.
I've been averaging 44.5 US miles/gallon pulling 2nd gear wheelies every trip and 'giving her the beans'... on my 2024 GS. I've been impressed!

Currently getting mid 50 mpg and it’s sitting at 61.1mpg after pottering about at a leisurely pace yesterday (Uk mpg).
Hi HP, That’s brilliant news ! Its quite amazing what you can get when riding gently 🙋🏻♂️
Kind regards Carl
Thanks for clearing it up regarding mpg difference in the US! I was definitely perplexed . 😊
Have a good week Correy
Carl 🙋🏻♂️
I have a s1000rr and a r1m, both have full exhaust and carbon fiber all over. People rarely compliment on those, only other riders who knows bike do. But for the GSA, I get compliments all the time, from car drivers next to me, to people in the parking lots. I think it's impressive for more regular people 😅😅😅
Thank you for sharing, lucky you to own all three great motorbikes. Best wishes Carl
Received my new GS today! Triple black baby!
Congratulations and lucky you 👍🙋🏻♂️
Same as me 2024 Triple Black and it is amazing!!
They do look lovely in TB congratulations 🥂

As a previous owner of a 2019 GSA and now a 2023 GSA i can certainly say that gearbox feels much different. The 2023 is much smoother even upshifting from 1st to 2nd.I guess they improved it!
Hi Dimitris, they seem to get better each year. 😉

Have a great weekend

Another brilliant video Carl, thank you for all the time you put into making these for us. As a UA-camr, I know how much work goes into making videos like yours.
A note to US viewers who may think Carl needs correcting on fuel consumption. Carl is talking about the Imperial Gallon and NOT the US Gallon. The Imperial gallon is a unit of volume in the imperial system of units, where the US gallon is used exclusively in the United States. The imperial gallon is 20% larger than the US gallon.
Please keep the amazing work going Carl. I for one am already looking forward to your next video. 😎
Hi Mark, good morning and thank you for your feedback and support.

After decades of sports bikes I’m now on my 4th GSA. Subtle improvements are something I’ve always been aware of on these bikes, it’s as if BMW secretly wave their magic wand over them.
😉👍
I ride 1250 RS and I definitely feel the cam shaft shifting, there is distinct push at that moment which is moving the bike and it is noticeable. I’m surprised you saying you don’t notice it at all. Indeed I don’t feel it in Road mode but definitely I do in Dynamic.
Thank you for sharing your experience 👍🙋🏻♂️ in dynamic mode the throttle map is very different and i can feel that change.
Hi Carl, great video in general. It would be awesome if that quick shift fix works. Can’t wait for the next video. Thanks for so much detail information 👌🏻
Hi Mr Majiso, thank you 🙏
Another victory of BMW R1250GS !
Amazing 🤩
Now I am more towards R1250GS instead of 1300GS as it is really lots of money. Even higher than the devil Ducati Multistrada V4 !
Assuming that there will be shift to 1300GS and lots of second hand 1250GSs will be out there available.
Yes the 1250 is going to be great value in both GS and GSA options 👍🙏
I’d love to know 👍
Carl
Great review video, completely different format, well done and thanks for sharing it! 👍👍
Hello Nelio, thank you 🙏, glad you enjoyed it

Hi Simon, thank you 🙏 and your going to have a great trip, I hope to go next season 👍

So the acceleration is not as good as the MTS (in my case 2010)? Shame cause that's what I love the most in a bike.
@@mikec.4811 No. The Multistrada was proper rapid. My GSA is quick and nimble for a huge bike. I really enjoy it after a year of ownership.
I just got a 2023 GSA and it’s early days but so far it’s incredible. Had a CRF1100 adventure sport before it and the GS blows it away as a road bike anyway.
Only downside is there was no heated seat available on my build due to a factory issue
I won’t take it off road so will try some more road bias tyres when they’re due

Thanks Carl - and just to say I’ve found your channel Really informative while I was shopping for GS it helped a lot with the research on them. Especially the ESA and mode videos you did 👍
Your very welcome Ken lots of owners are happy to help 👍
Thanks for a great review. I have the 2023 R1250GS Triple Black. I've been thinking about getting risers even though I am 6'2" '(~188cm). I have the seat low at the back and high at the front. What I didn't know was that the position of the pillion seat was adjustable as well. If I could move that forward that would be even better for my riding position because I use the stepped seat as a kind of back support. So I might not need the risers if I can move the pillion seat forward. I'll check it out after I finish typing 😀
Then let me know if it works for you 👍
Thanks for the great review.
Smile 😊

Great review. Please don't be too long with the upshift issue possible fix.
Ok Tim 🙋🏻♂️
When you’re shifting up with the quick shifter, stay on the gas. Don’t roll the throttle off like you would normally do. I think you’ll find it shifts nicely.

Hi HangPilot, welcome to the channel, great news thank you for sharing. Most dealerships are very good, friendly and well informed, with a few that could be improved.

It’s the dealers that let BMW down. Once the warranty is finished they start to find lots of things to fix. When it’s under warranty, “they all do that”.
Yes that’s probably very true 👍
Carl - I think a R1250GS/R1200GS dedicated wind protection video is in order and would benefit from your approach. So many different windscreen options and configurations to solve what is very much the weak point of the GS platform. Short windscreens, tall windscreens, spoilers, etc. How to change windscreens, options, etc. and their effects on the riding experience 1-up and 2-up. Thank you!
Hi Chuck, great idea for a video thank you, I’ve not yet found the perfect setup but I have one more thing to try, if it works I’ll post the solution.

Great review. As far as the quick shifter, it seems to work fairly well on my R1250RS as long as I'm on the throttle for upshifts and off the throttle for downshifts. I have watched all you videos since you got the 1250. Even BMW themselves couldn´t explain this bike better than you do.

But maybe one of the channel subscribers has both and can answer the question

I love my R1250GS. One negative, my previous Goldwing was MUCH easier to put on the center stand than this much lighter beast.
Well you can put it in preload setting MAX when you arrive in the garage, it’s then easier to put on / off the centre stand

Carl

Great breakdown
Thank you 🙏
Moc pěkné recenze a rady a postřehy, jedny z nejlepších co znám.
Hi Carl, another great video - thank you. Don't suppose you have a link to those Ebay screen mounts you mention at the 15-16 minute mark? Cheers from .au
Hi Doc, I did look before I uploaded the video but couldn’t find them. I’ll try again later and let you know.
Hi Carl, that’s fab. Thank you for your help 👍
@Waggler1250 your very welcome 🙏
@@justthewayitis thank you for the response I really appreciate it, I will keep an eye out for those features. Very excited to get a GS.
No problem, I wish you fun looking for your GS. 🙋🏻♂️
great video as always, also, just flashed my ECU, its not the same bike, it will walk away from any stock 1250, hands down............
That sounds really interesting
Interesting what you say about front end feel. BMW claim they have improved it on the 1300 but how exactly? All the best, N from W.
Hi Nick, I can confirm there is indeed more feel from the front of the 1300, the new EVO ESA is very different to our 1250 models.
I have a video about this for later in the season 👍🙋🏻♂️
It’s raining ☔️ here
Nice video again, Carl!
They just did a software upgrade on my mates bike for the engine braking. Maybe you're due this as well?
@@Simon-fm8yc oh that’s interesting! I’ll keep that in mind for my next service. Thanks!
Hi Jessica, yes perhaps a software update may address the issue you mentioned.
It’s worth a call to your dealership to ask !
Thank you for sharing 👍
Kind regards Carl
Thanks Simon 👍
Can i.check how and what you are using to mount your insta x3 camera on your mirror?
Hi Yes, no problem. I use a clamp on the bars next to the mirror, then a Ram Mount extension, then on the top a mount that mates with the Inst360 camera. I also use a extension pole.
Hope that helps Carl
Thank you very much. Cheers
You are welcome 🙏
Waiting for more new videos,
Dmytro
Hi Dymtro, you are 100% correct, any changes to the OEM software results in no warranty. I’m going to cover this in the video as owners need to be aware of this before making changes. It seems even turning off self cancelling indicators via the gs911 unit voids our warranty, which is disappointing.
Each owner will need to decide for themselves
Kind regards Carl
I get 42 MPG no matter what! I used to get 39, but slowed down at 72 years old. I've never gotten 50 MPG!!!
Well as others have commented my calculations are in Imperial MPG. Some bikes just seem perfectly set up from the factory 🏭
Same. 46-47 U.S. mpg. It’s mostly due to having a big touring windscreen. Which matches up with 56 mpg imperial.
Thank you for clarifying 👍
GS1300 M version vith a 17inch front wheel.. Why don't you just try the s1000XR?
Well lol … just wait to the next video 👍, I had a 2024 XR for a few days… smile 😊
Why deactivate the self cancelling indicators ?
Moving through traffic in a city leading a group is a real pain when the indicators decide to self cancel
@@justthewayitis leading a group in a city.... And the followers do not use their blinkers.... Sorry I did not think of that :-))
Won’t be a issue for most owners but on tour with a group it’s a pain 👍🙋🏻♂️
Thank you for your feedback on the channel, much appreciated
🙋🏻♂️👍
In terms of fuel economy I am never able to get more than 5.4-5.5 / 100... Maybe because of the terrain.
Yes your absolutely right our cars are cheaper to service, but that’s the price we pay 💰
Are you using imperial gallons for your mileage calculations? Your efficiency seems really high.
I think a lot has to do with the way I ride and the roads I ride. Here in Germany the roads are well surfaced and mostly empty, plus I carry a fair amount of corner speed.
Since he didn't answer the question, I'd say Imperial gallons. He's getting about 10 mpg more than I would expect.
Correct Imperial mpg

@@justthewayitis thx
Greeting to you and your BMW riders club members
kindest regards Carl
I have a 2023 1250 GS Trophy, and I consistently get 48 to 51, 52 MPG on US gallons. 2 lane highways doing mostly 50 to 65 mph and riding to get from point A to point B, with a purpose, not "for fun". People that ride for fun get much worse MPG's, due to their riding style. They are not riding for economy.
@feloniousmonk3049 thank you for sharing 👍
Can't wait to pick my 1250 GSA. End of April. I tested 1300 and it's a great bike but somehow it lost her "GS" personality. Too "mainstream" for me in terms of how it looks. However, from other points of view 1300 is better than 1250. At least on paper...
Well April is not far away 🙋🏻♂️ the wait is worth it 👍
Grate text. Tank you ingeniero !!! 🎉🎉
Thank you Bruno
Great question 🙋🏻♂️though
Kind regards Carl
@@justthewayitis Thank Carl. Yes I guess that makes sense but my cars have hill start assist which means you have to keep your foot brake depressed for the engine to stop, hence the brake lights are on during this process. Road users get used to drivers in front keeping their car stationary by the foot brake. I guess I would still like to see the brake light come on. Any rear bright illumination when you are stopped can’t be a bad thing.
Totally agree with you, we will have to wait and see if any manufacturers adopt this strategy.
@@justthewayitis yes let’s hope so especially as BMW and many manufacturers no longer actually fit handbrakes in preference to what I consider a uneccesary button that you would rarely use at traffic lights. So I think their parking/handbrake theory doesn’t make sense. Thanks again. John.
Hi John, your welcome 🙏
Quick question, is there a way (I'm looking at a used 2022) to check if any package are on a used bike? Maybe with Vin number ?
Yes Vin / chassis number and then visit your local bmw dealer and then for a speciation list.
Or put your code in here

Hi, what tyre pressure are you running on the Tourance Next 2 tyres? Thanks
