Another tip, the screwdriver handle is the oil filler cap tool. Use the metal shaft of the screwdriver in the side hole of the handle for leverage. Cheers Steve
It's a brilliant system that I have had no trouble with in the last 38,000kms. You mentioned a couple of obscure points that I wasn't aware of (main key working at rear sensor and the T25 on the toolkit screwdriver, I always carry a full toollkit anyway but it's good info) so thanks for doing the research. I have my disc lock and Krypton cable lock on the same keyring so never forget the keyless key.
I think you did a great service to the comunity of BMW riders just to summarize these features and some practical hint that my come handy once in a lifetime but that will takee your ride furthe particularly the one about a stuck fuel tank cap . thank you and ride safely.
Great content - like your channel. Usually I leave my emergency key at home - just like my spare car key. But if we are on a long trip (500+km from home) my wife carries a 2nd car key. But that is not just in case we lose one - it also gives her access to the car whenever she wants it. Taking the second bike key would concern me that I might lose both keys. However to keep discussion in perspectives - in 40+ years I have never lost a car or bike key.
9:02 - if you have the alarm system option fitted on the bike and its armed, that trick doesn't work. I played with the keyless ride operation yesterday and It took me a little while to figure it out it was because of the alarm system being armed. I set mine to arm automatically after 30 seconds of the bike being turned off in the TFT settings. Once I de-armed it (by pressing the square button on the radio key) it let me open the gas lid like you described (with the bike being off longer than the 2 minute window whilst having the radio key in range) 😎
All good info. I didn't know about using the main key (without the battery / or a dead battery ) the same way you'd use the emergency key.....thank you for that. I've had my GSA 1250 about 1 and 1/2 yrs and only recently did I start getting the 50% battery message. Also, there is a slight delay after the bike is turned off before the fuel filler cap can be opened (maybe 5/10 seconds) I believe anyone who has had problems with the pin mechanism, has forced the latch during that delay period. I know the first few times I refueled I was unaware of the delay and tried forcing the cap latch up. Luckily no damage to my locking pin occurred. Hi Stan, yup that was why I zoomed in on the filler cap to get the audio of the click when you lift the tab up a bit. I know when I first used it I nearly pulled the thing off because I didn't wait for it to click unlocked!!!!!

I did not know the remote could be used as an emergency key with a dead fob battery, or about the T-25 under the seat for the gas cap - excellent info 👍. Replacement keys in the U.S. are about $400+ for the remote, and about $65 for a metal key for bags and seat - quite a bit more! I also didn't know the plastic emergency key could be duplicated by BMW. 👍👍

Just purchased my first 1250 GSA and the salesman should have watched you video before taking the salesman position. Ha! We both about pulled the gas lever off before it unlatched. No mention pertaining to the key fob or back up key either. Another salesman flew through the controls at what has to be a new world record training explanation. Many thanks to your informative blog. Very helpful video! Thanks mate! Since you asked, I got the 50% battery warning after 11 months of regular use on my 2022 GSA. I have heard that storing the wireless key very close to the motorcycle will drain the key fob battery more quickly, so I avoid doing that.

05/12/23 . Great vid , very informative and well presented, I just bought a 2017 GS but received no information whatsoever from the dealer as it was a non BMW dealership . First problem I encountered was the quirky fuel cap procedure so turned to the bikers bible AKA UA-cam , panic over , you now have another new subscriber , keep this stuff up , am now going to Amazon to order some fob batteries, Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻
The modern keyless systems are pretty bulletproof. My 2015 Duc is keyless and I now 100% prefer it to keyed ignitions... it has had rare read issues (usually around gas pumps so I'm guessing due to interference) and periodic dead battery surprises but with Duc there are multiple fallbacks (nearfield sensor AND a dashboard unlock code)... I've never needed the dashboard code.
I had the unfortunate experience of putting my key fob through a complete washer and dryer cycle over a year ago. Surprisingly it apparently is so well sealed that it continues to function perfectly. Also, I attached the plastic key to the bike with a plastic tie near the steering yoke where it is fairly inconspicuous. Gives me peace of mind that I always have it with me.
Great and useful vid. I had the change battery warning pop up when my bike was about 18 months old, like you i had a few a couple of spares at home ( Pukka Duracell) and popped a new one in, still had the warning, took the battery out and replaced it with a second new one and the warning was gone, duff battery i figured. On the very next ride i was about 100 miles from home and the warning came on again, no 75 or 50% warning, just change battery. I didnt have my emergency spare and i didnt know that the Radio key could be used like the emegency one so was a bit twitchy. Stopped at a shop and bought a couple of new batteries. Energizer i think, all good and been ok since. Ive since heard that some batteries dont appear to function correctly with the key? Maybe nonsense but I now keep a couple on the bike.

Had my GS 2yrs the battery is on 50per cent and I mislaid the emergency keys found it eventually right under my nose in my key box where I'd left it for safe keeping. Was looking and not seeing, typical. However BMW wanted 4 quid for 1 battery and 35 for a new spare e.t.c Needless to say I didn't but anything. I've ordered Duracel off Amazon for 4 quid and will do my own Thanks
Thanks for the procedure for removing the small section to open the fuel door. That is an important thing to know, and it is easy enough to do if you had to,. One comment about the keyless entry. I think that it might be susceptible to people using a flipper and copying the constant broadcast from the key. If they can mimic that code, they might be able to ride of on your bike. This would just require them to get close to you in a restaurant or at a gas station. The key is always emitting the radio signal. I have a faraday cage small wallet that I can out the key in if I was ever in an area that I felt uncomfortable. There are a lot of questions about how BMW manages the radio signal, is there a challenge and a secondary signal or sometihing that is more secure? I'm not sure, but a lot of people get there cars stolen with keyless entry this way. Just something to think about.
FYI on a few items. On the 2020 RT, the key is not 100% water proof. (had mine replaced under warrenty). On the RT you need to be on the centre stand to open the filler cap. There have been reports of keys snapping off for the seat, be carefull. Lastly the button batterys a lot of the new packaging have a coating over the the battery which can cause them not to work when used, and wiping over with an IPA or metho cloth may be needed to remove this coasting to stop people eating em. In general I swap the battery every 12 months, they are cheap, and effective. Great video.
Picked up my GSA in March 2021. I got the limited function warning in January this year. I will changing the batteries in the key and the tracker fobs every year now, just in case. Hope that helps someone out there🙂.
Your awesome! Didn't know the radio key work underneath in the emergency antenna, and didn't know about the two screws at the gas tank. So! "I" was WAY in the middle of nowhere Colorado at a gas station the only building for many many miles got gas closed my filler cap, went to take off and my bike went into limp mode!! TFT( take bike qualified service center) bike ran but would not go beyond around 1000rpm?? Crap!! After several mins what is going on?? NO BMW SERVICE HERE!! so I just started all over! Open the gas cap and acted like I put gas in then closed the gas cap " well I didn't have my helmet or gloves on this time and there it was the "Click" !!! All good! Fyi, you can close the gas cap and it looks closed!! You better hear or feel that click! Lol.
Good video. Planning on picking up a GS for my 54th BDay this summer. So getting all of this information before hand is quite helpful so thanks for it. Personally I lost a set of keys while riding last year and I was bent out of shape for a long time about it. So, since my jacket didn’t have one I decided to create a small lanyard/lobster claw system that I sewed into the pocket of my riding jacket. It holds my keys securely in the event that I forget to zip my pocket on a ride. Actually, was actually how I lost my keys in the first place. It works so well that I have made them for a couple of my other riding jackets and it’s worth it. Not sure why manufacturers don’t include them as standard kit. Cheers from the States! (Buffalo,NY)
does this metal blade spare key you mentioned come with a handle and chip like the plastic emergency one? or is it just a blade replacement for the radio operated key?

I may be wrong but from what I can gather is that the ring aerial for the keyless ride is located under the seat at the center of the bike, not in the ignition, the ring aerial for a bike without keyless ride is located in the ignition barrel that you pointed to.
Correct and that’s the only aerial on a keyless ride bike, whereas one with a normal key had the transponder in the key with a battery and not strong enough to pick up the signal from under the seat hence have the ring around the ignition barrel where the normal key gets inserted
Fyi When opening gas cap after you turn off the TFT It's only 2 minutes if you are using the plastic key. If you have the key fob within range there is no time limit.
Thanks for the video. Great content. I got my GS1250 just 2 days back and I was wondering what the two buttons meant on the radio key. Seems like a dummy button as I don’t have alarm system fitted.
I have Rubber Bungs in the Frame Holes. Plastic Key wrapped in foam and placed inside the top frame hole. Replace the Bung. Safe as houses and I know exactly where it is.
I have the R1250RT, bought it about 15 months ago, just got the 50% battery warning. I carefully tucked the emergency key in my riding pants, which I wear on every ride... but I can't find it now, it must have worked its way out somehow and is laying on the roadside somewhere. 😞 I do like the keyless system overall. The RT has the unified luggage locking, which I can do with the keyfob.
My battery lasts about 18 months of daily commuting. Im not convinced regarding carrying the spare everyday just in case as i might lose them both. I would never carry 2 traditional keys for my cars or bikes. When i go away then i do take the spare in my kreiga wallet along with all my docs. If I lose my key at home (on the rock) er indoors will get a call 😏 I did experience an issue twice with my last GS. Once in france and once in wales. I believe i was too near a transmitter (phone or radio). I free wheeled the bike a few metres and it sorted itself out.
Hi Neil, rock riding I guess yes with the key...but further a field I would carry a key. I guess folks will do what works for them..one chap puts his spare in the frame holes with the Wunderlich bung to keep it hidden. Always good to spread words of wisdom though 👍
Had the bike just over a year and I'm on my THIRD damn "watch" battery--and I've seen the 50% Battery Warning within a couple of months of a change out. It's possible I bought a bad batch of batteries, but frankly I think the system (the antenna or radio) isn't quite up to spec. Another gripe is how difficult it is to open the battery compartment on the key; always feels like I'm breaking something before it finally pops open. Seem's a sliding latch mechanism would have been better. NIce bike, key-less is nice in concept; execution could be better.
Oh, it's same as mine...So, like it or not, I always open th battery compartment without battery. And when I ride the bike, I put the battery in and tape it round, which is ridiculous solution, though. I fully agree this should be a sliding latch mechanism!
Just in case no one has mentioned it, I find that only Varta batteries appear to be reliable as a replacement for the key fob. Ive tried all other good makes and the bike tells me the battery is low. Hopefully that helps
The dealers are charging a little over $400 USD for the spare key fobs now in North Carolina. Not sure if that’s consistent with other regions/dealers.
Great video and very helpful. You have a second key with the spare key, is this key also for the GS? Great to know that another spare key is not that expensive to get.
In case it’s of use to your viewers, I purchased a non transmitter key from my dealer for around £25. I keep the transmitter key in my jacket and the non transmitter on a lanyard round my neck. I use that one for the seat lock, sat nav lock and pannier locks. Negates the risk of me losing the expensive one as I don’t have to take it out of the jacket pocket.

I have a 1200RS When I return to the bike I have to press the buttons on the key to get the ignition to work,there is no alarm on the bike though? Any ideas?
What can prevent the lock of the filler cap of working? The lock pin is ok and if I turn the engine off and the TFT too the filler cap remains unlocked after 2 minutes
Hi, not sure ...software issue?but they have given us riders the option to open it just incase it does happen. I am a big fan of keyless (until it goes wrong😂)
@@gsd32i im using a tank top bag , from GIVI , to fix it I had to substitute the screws that are precisely on the piece that works with the keyless system , maybe they’re too tight , so I’ll do some troubleshooting and try to find the reason , and I agree , it’s an awesome system until it stops working 🤣🤣
I wish the signal from the key wasn’t so weak. When I’m wearing my Rev’It! winter shell with the key in my front pocket, the bike can’t get the signal. I have a R1250 GSA and a K1600 and same issue on both. Pretty poor signal. Half the time I’m riding around the bike is giving me warnings about not having a key. And yes I’ve changed the batteries and even bought a new key and same issue. It’s just weak.
I guess you dont have an alarm on your bike. The button on the fob can be used to disable the motion detector so if you are on a ferry for example the alarm doesn’t keep going off.
@@gsd32i I found mine will flash many lights if I move it around the garage and have left the key too far away on the work bench! Makes a bit of a noise too!
I thought keyless is now default, no additional charge. I do find the keyless very handy. I did also buy a Faraday pouch, which I store my key in when not riding. Keeps it safe. The battery in the key should last about 2 years, since it's a passive key. With the alarm, it would last shorter. I tend to leave my emergency key at home.
I can also vouch for motografix, I have the top and side tank protectors on my own GSA and they are amazing. Product codes TB051WBR and KB035LCRC. They match my rallye color scheme perfectly!
You should work for BMW Motorrad! I have 2021 Triple Black with most of the ridiculously over-priced packages. 1) There was no explanations on handover 2) I didn't even know it had a steering lock! 3) (your other video) I've disabled about 90% of the electronic sh@t....who needs it all? 4) ANOTHER of you vids - I fitted a black carbon Arrow race can (not paying BMW prices for the Akrapovic) - fitted Puig lower engine bars (ditto BMW prices) - like you, opted for Garmin XT and a twenty quid bracket - Screen Angel - easy fit - and finally an SW Motech brake pedal extender - lovely quality - but was £70+ worth it to gain 12mm extra width? BUT out of the 22 legal (!) road bikes I've owned over 50 years of riding, the 1250GS is the best - it does everything in one package. Keep up the good work - you're a life saver!

Indeed. A top tip is to avoid cheap batteries from the likes of the internet. Go for a trusted brand. I was going through a battery every 4 weeks, until I went for a proper make!!!! 🙈
There is a known fault with the keyless system where it keeps requesting new battery. There is an issue with the sensor on the bike. Btw know about it...
I dont like the keyless would 100% prefer a simple key , my bike came with the keyless, I've had my bike 18 months and probably gone through 5 key batteries. I've also been out riding and the key has fallen out my pocket took about a mile of riding befor an alarm popped on the up TFT then had to spend half an hour retracing my steps to find the key luckily i did and undamaged. Because you cant keep the key near the bike (I used to keep the key in the ignition in my garage on my old bike) because it drains the key battery i now keep the key in my flat, the times ive got suited up helmet on gloves on sit on the bike and no power you then have to go and find the blasted key. This probably says more about me than the bike but i just dont get it, I dont see the benefit.

Agreed. I’m not sure what the benefit is really. Especially when compared to all the negatives. I get anxious when filling up with gas because I don’t have confidence in the gas cap. You want to be quite ginger with that agile piece of kit. A chap told me back in the summer that he liked it because when he got suited up ready to ride he would always leave the key in his pocket and have to get off the bike to retrieve it. If you do that once or twice you get into a routine of putting the key in the ignition first. Then get suited up. Give me a key any day! Best!

Or you could get pushed off the bike with an old style key at the traffic lights and watch your bike get ridden off into the sunset , complete with the key. Leave the monsters under the bed 😂
emergency key isnt needed to be carried with you ? you wouldnt carry a spare for your car with ? , emergency key is only for when you lose the normal one

@@gsd32i the reason they tell you to leave it at home is incase you lose the jacket lets say with both keys in , your fuc*ed ... if your main key stops working it still works the same as the spare and can put it up to the sensor and start the bike just like the spare

Very helpful video! Thanks mate! Since you asked, I got the 50% battery warning after 11 months of regular use on my 2022 GSA. I have heard that storing the wireless key very close to the motorcycle will drain the key fob battery more quickly, so I avoid doing that.
Hahaha same surname as me ! My key sits on my garage worktop about 2 metres away from the handlebars so I’ll be interested to see if this has any effect. 👍

Great vid , very informative and well presented, I just bought a 2017 GS but received no information whatsoever from the dealer as it was a non BMW dealership . First problem I encountered was the quirky fuel cap procedure so turned to the bikers bible AKA UA-cam , panic over , you now have another new subscriber , keep this stuff up , am now going to Amazon to order some fob batteries, Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻

The modern keyless systems are pretty bulletproof. My 2015 Duc is keyless and I now 100% prefer it to keyed ignitions... it has had rare read issues (usually around gas pumps so I'm guessing due to interference) and periodic dead battery surprises but with Duc there are multiple fallbacks (nearfield sensor AND a dashboard unlock code)... I've never needed the dashboard code.
I had the unfortunate experience of putting my key fob through a complete washer and dryer cycle over a year ago. Surprisingly it apparently is so well sealed that it continues to function perfectly. Also, I attached the plastic key to the bike with a plastic tie near the steering yoke where it is fairly inconspicuous. Gives me peace of mind that I always have it with me.

I had the change battery warning pop up when my bike was about 18 months old, like you i had a few a couple of spares at home ( Pukka Duracell) and popped a new one in, still had the warning, took the battery out and replaced it with a second new one and the warning was gone, duff battery i figured. On the very next ride i was about 100 miles from home and the warning came on again, no 75 or 50% warning, just change battery. I didnt have my emergency spare and i didnt know that the Radio key could be used like the emegency one so was a bit twitchy. Stopped at a shop and bought a couple of new batteries. Energizer i think, all good and been ok since. Ive since heard that some batteries dont appear to function correctly with the key? Maybe nonsense but I now keep a couple on the bike.

Had my GS 2yrs the battery is on 50per cent and I mislaid the emergency keys found it eventually right under my nose in my key box where I'd left it for safe keeping.
Was looking and not seeing, typical.
However BMW wanted 4 quid for 1 battery and 35 for a new spare e.t.c
Needless to say I didn't but anything.
I've ordered Duracel off Amazon for 4 quid and will do my own

Thanks for the procedure for removing the small section to open the fuel door. That is an important thing to know, and it is easy enough to do if you had to,. One comment about the keyless entry. I think that it might be susceptible to people using a flipper and copying the constant broadcast from the key. If they can mimic that code, they might be able to ride of on your bike. This would just require them to get close to you in a restaurant or at a gas station. The key is always emitting the radio signal. I have a faraday cage small wallet that I can out the key in if I was ever in an area that I felt uncomfortable. There are a lot of questions about how BMW manages the radio signal, is there a challenge and a secondary signal or sometihing that is more secure? I'm not sure, but a lot of people get there cars stolen with keyless entry this way. Just something to think about.
FYI on a few items. On the 2020 RT, the key is not 100% water proof. (had mine replaced under warrenty). On the RT you need to be on the centre stand to open the filler cap. There have been reports of keys snapping off for the seat, be carefull. Lastly the button batterys a lot of the new packaging have a coating over the the battery which can cause them not to work when used, and wiping over with an IPA or metho cloth may be needed to remove this coasting to stop people eating em. In general I swap the battery every 12 months, they are cheap, and effective. Great video.

Picked up my GSA in March 2021. I got the limited function warning in January this year. I will changing the batteries in the key and the tracker fobs every year now, just in case. Hope that helps someone out there🙂.
Your awesome! Didn't know the radio key work underneath in the emergency antenna, and didn't know about the two screws at the gas tank.
So! "I" was WAY in the middle of nowhere Colorado at a gas station the only building for many many miles got gas closed my filler cap, went to take off and my bike went into limp mode!! TFT( take bike qualified service center) bike ran but would not go beyond around 1000rpm?? Crap!! After several mins what is going on?? NO BMW SERVICE HERE!! so I just started all over! Open the gas cap and acted like I put gas in then closed the gas cap " well I didn't have my helmet or gloves on this time and there it was the "Click" !!! All good! Fyi, you can close the gas cap and it looks closed!! You better hear or feel that click! Lol.

Good video. Planning on picking up a GS for my 54th BDay this summer. So getting all of this information before hand is quite helpful so thanks for it.
Personally I lost a set of keys while riding last year and I was bent out of shape for a long time about it. So, since my jacket didn’t have one I decided to create a small lanyard/lobster claw system that I sewed into the pocket of my riding jacket. It holds my keys securely in the event that I forget to zip my pocket on a ride. Actually, was actually how I lost my keys in the first place.
It works so well that I have made them for a couple of my other riding jackets and it’s worth it. Not sure why manufacturers don’t include them as standard kit.

You can also get a metal blade spare key for around £30 from the dealer , idea for frequent use with the vario panniers.

BMW recommend Varta batteries but top of range Duracell work fine too. Beware of cheapo CR2032 batteries, they just don't last.
Mine came with a Panasonic. Yes buy from a reputable seller then you won't go wrong. if 10x cr2032's for £5 sound too cheap then there's a reason why!

A great spot for the emergency key rather than your jacket is to stick it inside your helmet. Most people only have one helmet :)
I may be wrong but from what I can gather is that the ring aerial for the keyless ride is located under the seat at the center of the bike, not in the ignition, the ring aerial for a bike without keyless ride is located in the ignition barrel that you pointed to.
That’s for the spare key …. I think . 👍
Correct and that’s the only aerial on a keyless ride bike, whereas one with a normal key had the transponder in the key with a battery and not strong enough to pick up the signal from under the seat hence have the ring around the ignition barrel where the normal key gets inserted

When opening gas cap after you turn off the TFT It's only 2 minutes if you are using the plastic key.
If you have the key fob within range there is no time limit.

I have Rubber Bungs in the Frame Holes. Plastic Key wrapped in foam and placed inside the top frame hole. Replace the Bung. Safe as houses and I know exactly where it is.

I have the R1250RT, bought it about 15 months ago, just got the 50% battery warning. I carefully tucked the emergency key in my riding pants, which I wear on every ride... but I can't find it now, it must have worked its way out somehow and is laying on the roadside somewhere. 😞 I do like the keyless system overall. The RT has the unified luggage locking, which I can do with the keyfob.
yes they are small keys....put a tag on it. I did think the plastic key would snap in there seat lock when I tried it...but it didn't !! phew.

My battery lasts about 18 months of daily commuting. Im not convinced regarding carrying the spare everyday just in case as i might lose them both. I would never carry 2 traditional keys for my cars or bikes. When i go away then i do take the spare in my kreiga wallet along with all my docs. If I lose my key at home (on the rock) er indoors will get a call 😏
I did experience an issue twice with my last GS. Once in france and once in wales. I believe i was too near a transmitter (phone or radio). I free wheeled the bike a few metres and it sorted itself out.
Hi Neil, rock riding I guess yes with the key...but further a field I would carry a key. I guess folks will do what works for them..one chap puts his spare in the frame holes with the Wunderlich bung to keep it hidden. Always good to spread words of wisdom though 👍
Varta batteries are the way to go, I tried Duracell and they only worked for a couple of weeks.

Had the bike just over a year and I'm on my THIRD damn "watch" battery--and I've seen the 50% Battery Warning within a couple of months of a change out. It's possible I bought a bad batch of batteries, but frankly I think the system (the antenna or radio) isn't quite up to spec. Another gripe is how difficult it is to open the battery compartment on the key; always feels like I'm breaking something before it finally pops open. Seem's a sliding latch mechanism would have been better. NIce bike, key-less is nice in concept; execution could be better.
Oh, it's same as mine...So, like it or not, I always open th battery compartment without battery. And when I ride the bike, I put the battery in and tape it round, which is ridiculous solution, though. I fully agree this should be a sliding latch mechanism!
Just in case no one has mentioned it, I find that only Varta batteries appear to be reliable as a replacement for the key fob. Ive tried all other good makes and the bike tells me the battery is low. Hopefully that helps

The dealers are charging a little over $400 USD for the spare key fobs now in North Carolina. Not sure if that’s consistent with other regions/dealers.

The small key is for the sw motech side case locks, I have one on each key fob. 👍
In case it’s of use to your viewers, I purchased a non transmitter key from my dealer for around £25. I keep the transmitter key in my jacket and the non transmitter on a lanyard round my neck. I use that one for the seat lock, sat nav lock and pannier locks. Negates the risk of me losing the expensive one as I don’t have to take it out of the jacket pocket.

I've had my 2022 GSA for 12 month and 25k miles and still haven't gotten the 50% warning light.
Does the ecu command the ignition on the keyless go system or is it just a relation between the key and ignition button only?

I have a 1200RS When I return to the bike I have to press the buttons on the key to get the ignition to work,there is no alarm on the bike though? Any ideas?

What can prevent the lock of the filler cap of working? The lock pin is ok and if I turn the engine off and the TFT too the filler cap remains unlocked after 2 minutes
Hi, not sure ...software issue?but they have given us riders the option to open it just incase it does happen. I am a big fan of keyless (until it goes wrong😂)
@@gsd32i im using a tank top bag , from GIVI , to fix it I had to substitute the screws that are precisely on the piece that works with the keyless system , maybe they’re too tight , so I’ll do some troubleshooting and try to find the reason , and I agree , it’s an awesome system until it stops working 🤣🤣
I wish the signal from the key wasn’t so weak. When I’m wearing my Rev’It! winter shell with the key in my front pocket, the bike can’t get the signal. I have a R1250 GSA and a K1600 and same issue on both. Pretty poor signal. Half the time I’m riding around the bike is giving me warnings about not having a key. And yes I’ve changed the batteries and even bought a new key and same issue. It’s just weak.
I have the same problem. I once forgot the key in the washing machine. Maybe that is the problem, even though I put in a new battery.

I am not a technician ….its only a bit of plastic with some wire inside so my guess is yes ….bit it’s a guess 😂
I guess you dont have an alarm on your bike. The button on the fob can be used to disable the motion detector so if you are on a ferry for example the alarm doesn’t keep going off.
Correct , no alarm fitted , but I did wonder if they did the welcome lights hen we approached the bike ay night...... that would be cool.
@@gsd32i I found mine will flash many lights if I move it around the garage and have left the key too far away on the work bench! Makes a bit of a noise too!

I thought keyless is now default, no additional charge. I do find the keyless very handy.
I did also buy a Faraday pouch, which I store my key in when not riding. Keeps it safe.
The battery in the key should last about 2 years, since it's a passive key. With the alarm, it would last shorter.
I tend to leave my emergency key at home.
Standard on the "TE"model. Hopefully you won't be too far from home if you lose your radio key 🙈😂

You should work for BMW Motorrad! I have 2021 Triple Black with most of the ridiculously over-priced packages. 1) There was no explanations on handover 2) I didn't even know it had a steering lock! 3) (your other video) I've disabled about 90% of the electronic sh@t....who needs it all? 4) ANOTHER of you vids - I fitted a black carbon Arrow race can (not paying BMW prices for the Akrapovic) - fitted Puig lower engine bars (ditto BMW prices) - like you, opted for Garmin XT and a twenty quid bracket - Screen Angel - easy fit - and finally an SW Motech brake pedal extender - lovely quality - but was £70+ worth it to gain 12mm extra width? BUT out of the 22 legal (!) road bikes I've owned over 50 years of riding, the 1250GS is the best - it does everything in one package. Keep up the good work - you're a life saver!

If the key is left for long periods of time in range of the bike, the battery will die very quickly. I keep my key away from the bike when not in use.
Indeed. A top tip is to avoid cheap batteries from the likes of the internet. Go for a trusted brand. I was going through a battery every 4 weeks, until I went for a proper make!!!! 🙈
There is a known fault with the keyless system where it keeps requesting new battery. There is an issue with the sensor on the bike. Btw know about it...
Hopefully fixed. 8 months from new and no issues yet 🤞

I dont like the keyless would 100% prefer a simple key , my bike came with the keyless, I've had my bike 18 months and probably gone through 5 key batteries. I've also been out riding and the key has fallen out my pocket took about a mile of riding befor an alarm popped on the up TFT then had to spend half an hour retracing my steps to find the key luckily i did and undamaged.
Because you cant keep the key near the bike (I used to keep the key in the ignition in my garage on my old bike) because it drains the key battery i now keep the key in my flat, the times ive got suited up helmet on gloves on sit on the bike and no power you then have to go and find the blasted key. This probably says more about me than the bike but i just dont get it, I dont see the benefit.

Agreed. I’m not sure what the benefit is really. Especially when compared to all the negatives. I get anxious when filling up with gas because I don’t have confidence in the gas cap. You want to be quite ginger with that agile piece of kit. A chap told me back in the summer that he liked it because when he got suited up ready to ride he would always leave the key in his pocket and have to get off the bike to retrieve it. If you do that once or twice you get into a routine of putting the key in the ignition first. Then get suited up. Give me a key any day! Best!

Re the emergency key - I'd keep mine in my wallet. Then regardless of what jacket to use you'll always have it with you.

emergency key isnt needed to be carried with you ? you wouldnt carry a spare for your car with ? , emergency key is only for when you lose the normal one

@@gsd32i the reason they tell you to leave it at home is incase you lose the jacket lets say with both keys in , your fuc*ed ... if your main key stops working it still works the same as the spare and can put it up to the sensor and start the bike just like the spare
