To people not understanding why Steph can have empathy for this person: There's a big difference between empathy and approval. You can have empathy regarding the feelings someone has and disapprove the actions caused by these feelings. These are two seperate things, that's what Stephanie explains in the video.

I kinda wish she had straight up said it then? Because all I heard after that train started was excuses and reasons to feel bad for her, not any want or claim she should accept accountability? Empathy is fine but vocalizing the other part is necessary to people thinking you dont approve of it. Instead she just kept saying she gets it, she's done it, and it's not illegal. That's not saying it's bad. She even said she's "not angry with her" and even though her whole brand is not photoshopping, it's ok she photoshopped. That statement is not saying she was in the wrong.

Of course but she didn't really take Karina accountable for actions on this video and I guess that's why people thought she was too "nice" with her

Cassandra Bankson has talked about editing her photos on instgram and her approach was to post both the edited and unedited versions of the same photo of herself typically posted together. That way you can see your perfected image but also still be honest with your followers. I guess a solution like that just wasn’t enough for this influencer.

@@LotusesGalaxyOcean it's really mind boggling that she would edit her photos twice I guess. Once to show off a clearly heavily edited shot and again to show a more subtly edited shot that she claimed was original. That's two steps too many to be calling this a little mistake.

If body positivity wasn't the specific part of her brand used to sell products, then she's a fraud IMO. We can apply the same logic to when the Kardashians use filters in adverts for selling their makeup/skincare - the whole point is to see the product unfiltered. It's false advertising. If her brand was unconnected to capitalising on the body positivity movement, I'd say she's only human and give her more grace.... but this isn't it for me ☹

Karina was actually the first “body positivity” influencers that I ever followed and I loved her content because she seemed very raw and real. It’s super disappointing to see this because I’ve always been insecure about my waist-to-hips ratio (I have no waist, I’m a rectangle lol). I always envied her for her small waist and I think she’s gorgeous even without the filters, but it just makes me sad that someone that I looked up to so much ended up tweaking just like everyone else. I just posted my first swimsuit photo postpartum and I’m about 30 lbs heavier than I’d like to be, but I felt beautiful and didn’t tweak it one bit. Hoping that all of those suffering with Body Dysmorphic or the like see their beauty no matter what. ❤️

The difference between when you were photoshopping your photos and when she’s done it is that you weren’t making money off the image of your body.
She has been promoting herself as “natural” and led her audience to believe they could attain something that’s virtually impossible irl (without paying for body altering surgeries).
Sure, she might leave cellulite or something in the photo, but in doing so that would only lead her audience to believe that since she left some parts unedited then she likely left ALL of it unedited.
If she wasn’t making money off her body and the body positivity branding, then I could forgive her. However, she is making a lot of money from deceiving her followers. No matter how you try to frame it, that is unacceptable.

?? That last sentence is kinda weird... Also, she might be "empathizing" because she might be scared of a backlash. So many times when she posts a video of exposing celebrities, she has the fan base stans attacking her and calling her insecure so she is probably just trying to stay safe. It must be really annoying and stressful for her when people get angry at her when she doesn't empathize with the influencers/celebrities and people get angry at her when she does.

The second half of this video gave really “we need more mental health resources” when a violent/bigoted/etc thing is done- as though all people with mental health struggles are inherently that way. Plenty, maybe even the majority of femme folks deal with insecurities- the majority of us don’t use those insecurities to manipulate, prey upon, and hurt others. What's crazy is , over all these years , I eneded up kind of liking her and she grew on me. I still found her to be pretty cringey , but I had aged and matured myself and had grown to appreciate the body positive train a little. I've unfollowed so many influencers over the years , but I guess I just decided to keep following her. All of this news is honestly so insane to me... I recovered from an eating disorder a few years ago and a big aspect of my bad body image was comparing to others, online and in person. When recovering, I resorted to body positive accounts which were definitely more empowering, but they didn't solve the root of the problem which was an excessive focus on the body rather than putting value in other elements of my identity and self. Wow this is so heartbreaking! I’ve followed her for a while and thought it was refreshing to see unedited pics for a change but some of her posts would make me a little sus since her face would be perfect in some like with a filter and not others or would notice her changing waist size but would blame it on the angle and the magic of certain poses! It breaks my heart that it seems like there are no genuine unedited “body” influencers out there! She isn’t the only one! Used to follow this other pretty big influencer who would post about her loose skin and no she didn’t seem to edit her loose skin or body but she always had such perfect youthful skin and so many would compliment her and ask for her secrets since she was already in her mid thirties looking like she is 23 with such flawless skin…. Turned out I found the face filter she uses on every single photo and video and you can see it glitch at times if you look closely! It’s just hard enough being a woman and dealing with insecurities that come with life but to have people who you trust are transparent still use some form of editing that can be small but can make such a big difference is really harmful to women like me who are very insecure and who seek out people to follow who will help boost your confidence in this day and age of everything fake on social media! It’s hard to have faith in anything you see online these days since they can be fake with disclaimers saying “not edited” “all natural”! But thank you for always being so open and honest Stephanie ❤️ we need more like you !

I think the hard thing about body positivity is you still need to fit the beauty standard OR be very funny. Cuz the big names are all gorgeous but have one "flaw" like cellulite, acne, scars etc. Which feels a lot like that trend "She's a 10 but...". Like they can be popular with their "flaw" because they look amazing. And as Stephanie's videos so clearly show, everyone feels the pressure to try to fit that impossible standard, and I can imagine that those feelings increase as a body positive influencer as they get a lot of hate.

We get in our heads about our own attractiveness and worth too. We get caught up in endless comparisons to unreal images. We examine our faces and bodies and feel less then at times. I think this can be more of a situation that applies to the gay community tbh, especially when it comes to the male influencers who promote body positivity and diversity as I definitely see it being predominantly gay men who front these type of profiles, which is a blessing! Also historically and culturally the gay community has been pretty hard on a male who doesn't fit the cliche aesthetic of either a skinny young twink or a ripped insta perfect man.
