Note that criticals do not ignore evasion; it’s just that anything that can hit you with max evasion will be a crit, as the roll for an automatic hit also gets you an automatic crit. This distinction only really matters for the enemy if they have a higher than usual critical rate, which few do, but it does mean that forgoing hit rate for crit rate isn’t obviously correct. The actual chance to hit doesn’t vary much, but you get an extra hit every 32, so you’d want to consider that. Also note that anything in the game had a 1/201 chance of hitting a target even if they fully resist it; this makes the Bane sword (the one used to kill Tiamat) useful against Chaos, because killing his with the Masamune is unlikely if he sticks Slo2 to you, which he will do 75% of the time he casts it (it’s non-elemental, so only magic defense can resist it and magical classes have bad magic defense). If that happens and you can’t reverse it (and any character that doesn’t know Fast can’t), going for the 1/201 over and over is usually the better strategy except for maybe the Fighter. The Black Belt also doesn’t care because he will have killed Chaos before he casts it.
I was slightly wrong about the odds; as it turns out, the game uses a table of numbers from 0-255 that it converts to 0-200, and it turns out that 3 of them convert to 0 (because there's two 1's in the table for some reason), which is the value that produces automatic hits. This means the actual odds are 3/256 instead of 1/201, which is about 2.3 times higher, which is very good for the desperate Bane plays against Chaos in solo runs and is largely irrelevant to anything else that's not a TAS I think. I learned this from the notes on a TAS by TheAxeMan; if you search "FF1 TAS" it'll almost certainly be the first thing that pops up. It's a good watch, the subtitles have lots of fun little notes to explain what's going on. I also learned from it that elemental weapon bonuses apparently actually do work, contrary to everything I'd ever heard, but the bonuses based on monster type still don't work. The bonus is your attack essentially being 4 higher than it usually is, so it's not like it really makes much of a difference anyways. For reference, the first weapon that this applies to, the Flame Sword, goes from 26 attack to 30, and the practical result is doing 4-8 more damage per hit, with that amount doubled for crits. Funnily enough, Final Fantasy II quintupled this bonus to +20. Final Fantasy III finally moved to just multiplying the damage by 2, which I think is more or less what every other game does (with the number adjusted up or down sometimes).

To be fair, you don't really need more precise ways of playing a turn based combat game if you're not speed running it. If she were doing a Rockman challenge though..
I love how the title implies that the challenge isn't ONLY having a white mage and NOTHING ELSE, but that having one in your party AT ALL is enough of a challenge
that title would go to the thief. they're so terrible in the NES version that many people genuinely consider that to be the case. they have absolutely zero spells, their main stats are agility and luck (both pretty awful stats), they have terrible armor and low magic resistance, and endurance is their dump stat making them the squishiest of the fighters with practically nothing to bolster it. the only way they can viably fight is killing the enemy before the enemy can kill them, but don't have the strength to even do that. literally the only thing they have going for them is they can equip almost any weapon, but good luck surviving long enough to get a decent one.
For anyone who wants to try this challenge on more recent versions of FF1, you’ll likely be playing on a version where the Peninsula of Power bug was fixed, making the mid-game grind a bit trickier. If you can beat Astos, you’ll eventually unlock the Mystic Key, which will allow you to open up a treasure room in his castle to the left of the throne room. Bring some healing items and park yourself wherever you can save closest to this room. Each of the tiles adjacent to the chests in that room will throw you into a battle with a horde of undead enemies - on the version I played, the second-tier Dia spell will kill them all instantly, bestowing you with a good sum of EXP and an even gooder sum of cold, hard cash. Because these tiles are forced encounters, you can run back and forth on these tiles over and over again to trigger the same encounter repeatedly, allowing you to farm these enemies for experience and money for as long as you feel like it! (Source: Did a White Mage run myself on the now-discontinued mobile version of FF1. Needless to say, I was psyched to see this video in my feed!)
This is my preferred mid-game grind strategy. You can also use the guaranteed enemies in the treasure room in the Earth Cave, though obviously those are less safe.
@@Xeronoia Yes, Wisdom (or INT in later localizations) are applied at least as far back as the GBA remakes, and I believe the PS1 versions do as well. Red Mage becomes noticeably less useful as a caster as a result.
It’s funny seeing you mention how strange the magic system is, considering I guessed it immediately when you said that. It’s the same one as Dungeons and Dragons, since these games were based off of it.
To be fair, Dungeons and Dragons has a strange magic system, shared only with the least creative D&D clones and one fantasy author whose magic system wasn't stolen by anyone else, because Vancian magic is just awkward.
The stupid part about it is that the Wisdom stat was broken, not broken as to being abused is a great strategy, but as broken as to it not working…oh I guess they already knew about that….
@@timothymclean Wizardry is not what I would call a "least creative D&D clone", personally. I will agree with you that Vancian magic is awkward, though.
@@timothymclean In case you didn't know, Jack Vance (the author you referenced) is the creator of the Vancian magic system and is named after him. Gygax used the system in D&D, and D&D is why/how it became a trope, but did not create the system of magic. You didn't claim that D&D made the system but I wanted to clarify just in case others who read this don't know this history. Personally, I enjoy the system but understand it is confusing and doesn't fit the current pop culture of magic. Heck, it confused the hell out of me when I was a kid enough to dissuade me from even trying D&D until much later; it's only with my now 2+ decades of experience in TTRPGs that I appreciate how it reins in magic and rewards forethought despite it's immense learning curve.
That beginning really hit hard for me since I still have chronic wrist pain for about a year now. And I have that exact same arcade stick, but I haven't tried playing with my feet for fear of the pain showing up there too. It really is awful
I don't know if you guys have arthiritis or carpal tunnel but I developed really brutal carpal tunnel from playing WoW 10 hours a day. Its technically a wrist thing but still caused a lot of pain in my fingers and hand joints. A wrist brace (the kind with the metal splint) and changing my chair and keyboard setup to something more ergonomic helped a lot. I basically don't have it anymore.
@@BoltTheEmolgaff2’s level up system is different from from ff games. Each stat that can be improved requires specific actions, and all 3 party members alongside other members have many different things to level up. Projared explains it pretty well in his review for final fantasy 2.
17:20 This section makes me want to see a comic series following the White Mage solo. I picture it being a combination of serious scenarios and goofy-ass shenanigans. Like the beginning where they're trekking back to the first town and performing some Weekend at Bernie's shenanigans atop the hill after surviving a horror-filled prologue that kills-off the other three (One of them dies in an anticlimactic way by just being an idiot, tripping and breaking their neck or something). Get to Astos and he seems fine, talking in English, then when you give him the crown he starts talking in Japanese and turns evil, confusing the f*** out of the White Mage. Just continue this tone throughout the entire story. After the final battle, someone mentions that the White Mage could have just revived their teammates at a church, COMPLETELY throwing them for a loop with a little box reminding us that their "Wisdom" stat is nonexistent in comparison to their other stats (Make this a recurring joke), and leading to the epilogue which shows off everyone's stat-growth from the beginning of the story to the end, everyone having no growth except for the White Mage who reached max level and max stats with nearly no Wisdom.

This INT (Wisdom) stat no being programmed is 100% true and absolutely hilarious. I'm part of the Final Fantasy Randomizer community and the rando fixes ever "bug" the game has. Anything with evidence that it was intended to go somewhere and wasn't done right. INT, though, just goes nowhere. No process, no indication. So we don't fix it because there's nothing to fix. Best guess: since Final Fantasy 1 is based in D&D (to a very copyright-violating degree), they put in INT and gave it stat growth so they could use it eventually... and then never came up with any reason to use it, and at that point it was a bigger pain to remove it than to leave it and just ignore it. Notes on the run: 1) Heal is a party-wide healing spell so less need to have it than cure spells in the game for a solo party member. 2) If you're grinding and enemies start running away, put one of your level 1 corpses into the front slot. The game only reads the first character when calculating things like morale (whether they run) and ambush. Yes, stronger packs will be more likely ambush you, but they won't run. 3) "Less likely to incur paralysis, stone, and death" but, because of the way the game is programmed, not impossible. There's always a 3/256 crit chance for any spell and, even with a ribbon, those effects (and others) will still get through.
@@Gotmilk0112 Balance. If you go with any of the fixes that were put in later games (which were done by other programmers than the original team) then it does drastically change the balance of magic in the NES game.

As someone who recently gained an interest in the Final Fantasy series thanks to FFXIV Online and a white mage main in said game, I approve 200% of this challenge run
Unlike most solo challenge runs, the White Mage (sans white wizard) solo run is probably the hardest. Since you lose out on most forms of damage and have to rely heavily on RNG being in your favor. In a game held together by hopes and dreams thats not exactly something you should rely on lol
I love the black mage servi-bot! great video as always, girl! I have similar hand pain problems so I'm so sorry you're going through that. thanks for another great video! 🎉

Incredibly happy to you back, and happy to hear your hands are doing relatively okay! Make sure to take care of yourself! And man, hearing things like “reasons only those who can read Japanese can understand” makes me remember why I love your content so much. Lovely work as always, GamerChamp! Inspiring me to do my own challenge runs for games over here…
It’d be interesting to compare this run across different versions - NES versus GBA versus remasters… Not something that would come up in this run but NES battles have this weird mechanic where if a monster dies before a member of your party can attack it, the attack just whiffs. The attack doesn’t target to the next enemy, your guy just attacks the air. You have to predict when enemies are going to be knocked out so you don’t waste turns.
The irony is that this run effectively bypasses the bug. Which makes me wonder if the game was originally programmed to have one hero (like Dragon Quest) rather than four...
So glad to see you back with another video! I was starting to get worried that it might not be in the cards, but I'm glad to hear you seem to be on the road to recovery, even if you're not quite there yet. Remember to give yourself grace while you're on the mend, and I hope you can bounce back from the hiatus without too much struggle!
I didn't think one could make an over-the-top explanation of FF1's Intelligence stat. Perfection :) Congratulations on the run, hope your hands recover quickly!
If you want to see full FF1 challenge/mod/randomizer runs, BlueAnkylo is fantastic at them. Dude knows the game back to front, and in non-solo runs he avoids getting overleveled to keep things interesting. He's done solo runs of every class, several times, on several different versions. From watching him I know that solo thief is the real challenge mode, especially on the NES due to the bugs in the original game. The way he speaks is great for watching at 1.5x speed, too, which is great when you're blasting through his hours long playthroughs. Highly recommended!
I can't believe UA-cam only just recommended your channel. Def subscribing and considering supporting in your livlihood and being able to eat race. Great humor, engaging line delivery, and clean visuals. Keep up the good work man.
Big agreement, I'm glad to have stumbled upon this in my sidebar too. 😄 I'm just letting you know that at 6:57 , it was pointed out subtly that she has parted ways with the "man" label. 😉
I remember the legend of how a White Mage named Siri backed Chaos into a corner and forced him to flee from this realm simply by walking foward into the room, dragging the decaying corpses of her party behind her.
Could you imagine this as an anime where the party wipes in the first fight except for the healer, and the healer proceeds through the rest of the quest supported by the ghost of his peers.
This is the first video of this channel that I watch. The plain yet very sarcastic narration full of dry humor was amazing, but the IT'S TIME TO *KILL CHAOS* freaking killed me, another type of humor I like is just loud stupid stuff Amazing vid! Now I'll proceed to binge a lot of other videos
Glad to see you back Gamerchamp! Also, as someone who’s played Final Fantasy on the NES a lot when I was younger, seeing this video was a pleasure! Also, glad your hands are progressively better now from the strain of Repliku 4 and Larxene 2.
I remember reading a bunch of FF challenge playthroughs on somebody's online website. I loved those: i think solo white mage was also among them, but that doesn't mean i'm not looking forward to seeing it again in all your VGMyths glory!
I love this game, flaws and all. It's got such an adventurous aura and solid open world progression for such an old game. Thanks for doing this crazy challenge!
I'm glad your hands are even slightly on the mend. Please do take care of yourself, and your continued efforts are appreciated. I loved the part where the White Mage said "Bullshit," played Limp Bizkit, and walked away as Goblins ate their allies.
Genuinely, this is one of my favorite videos you’ve ever made. The jokes are top-notch and you make this RPG so engaging!! If this means we’re getting videos on all the numbered final fantasy games, i’m super excited for the future :>
Great to see you back! Hope your hands are feeling okay, and interested to see if Final Fantasy joins Ratchet & Clank and Rockman as a recurring franchise on the channel.
Glad to see you back! Hope your hands get better. I gotta say, a healer continuously being slain by monsters and brought back to life in order to go against her nature and become the most efficient killing machine in the world with only the corpses of her would-be allies for company makes me think of, like, a dark fantasy series that treats the whole process literally. Something in the vein of Re:Zero and All You Need is Kill, but the heroine uses a bunch of carcasses for extra pocket space.

that title would go to the thief. they're so terrible in the NES version that many people genuinely consider that to be the case. they have absolutely zero spells, their main stats are agility and luck (both pretty awful stats), they have terrible armor and low magic resistance, and endurance is their dump stat making them the squishiest of the fighters with practically nothing to bolster it. the only way they can viably fight is killing the enemy before the enemy can kill them, but don't have the strength to even do that. literally the only thing they have going for them is they can equip almost any weapon, but good luck surviving long enough to get a decent one.
That "KILL CHAOS" caught me extremely off guard in the best way. Gkad to see you back queen

Hello, would you like to hear how you can KILL CHAOS!! ?
Oh God. I forgot about that. I'm old as hell now
I was just thinking about that this afternoon.
Four white mages? It'll never work.
Longest running joke I know of from web comics. 8-Bit Theater was amazing!
Did they ever make Wisdom actually do anything in the remakes?
@@Xeronoia Yes, Wisdom (or INT in later localizations) are applied at least as far back as the GBA remakes, and I believe the PS1 versions do as well. Red Mage becomes noticeably less useful as a caster as a result.
I thought Square Enix added the Peninsula of Power back to recent ports of the game?
@@BamaTears I know it's not in Pixel Remaster; I forget if it still existed in other ports (GBA/PSP) or not offhand.
It’s funny seeing you mention how strange the magic system is, considering I guessed it immediately when you said that. It’s the same one as Dungeons and Dragons, since these games were based off of it.
More specifically, based off of Wizardry, which was based off of D&D.
I wanna just imagine the white mage just drags the bodies of their team mates to each battle so they can watch
He grounded them into powder and put them into three small pouches.
I hope your recovery continues swiftly and well! That TIME TO KILL CHAOS made me think Jack Garland himself busted into the video, congratulations!!!
That beginning really hit hard for me since I still have chronic wrist pain for about a year now. And I have that exact same arcade stick, but I haven't tried playing with my feet for fear of the pain showing up there too. It really is awful
I was worried about that too; I eased myself in playing just a little bit each day with long breaks. I can now use it mostly indefinitely.
I imagine Gamechamp wants to do a FFX No Sphere Grid Challenge, but she needs to play games in order, so she has begun the Final Fantasy Grind!
Shhhhhhh

@@alidouciousbarefisted attack is the most broken way to play FF2.

@@BoltTheEmolgaff2’s level up system is different from from ff games. Each stat that can be improved requires specific actions, and all 3 party members alongside other members have many different things to level up. Projared explains it pretty well in his review for final fantasy 2.
I got an ad for audible and it ended with “it feels good to hear- GOOD MORNING EVEEYONE AND WELCOME BACK TO VG MYTHS”
Wait a second. This white mage has the same build as Aqua from Konosuba.

This challenge is legendary among FF1 players. An infamous brick wall of pain. My respects to you Champ for even ATTEMPTING this
This INT (Wisdom) stat no being programmed is 100% true and absolutely hilarious.
Notes on the run:
1) Heal is a party-wide healing spell so less need to have it than cure spells in the game for a solo party member.
Ayy, you're back! We're all happy to see you.

The latte and pulling up Picross during the cutscene of Chaos disintegrating was, frankly, beautiful.
2:25 Ok "4 is a bigger number than 'a' " is a really really funny pun! Excellent!
It’d be interesting to compare this run across different versions - NES versus GBA versus remasters…
Not something that would come up in this run but NES battles have this weird mechanic where if a monster dies before a member of your party can attack it, the attack just whiffs. The attack doesn’t target to the next enemy, your guy just attacks the air. You have to predict when enemies are going to be knocked out so you don’t waste turns.
I actually liked that mechanic, but it's not a big deal. I also LOVE FF1's spell system and I wish more games would use it.,
The irony is that this run effectively bypasses the bug. Which makes me wonder if the game was originally programmed to have one hero (like Dragon Quest) rather than four...
I was literally just rewatching old VG Myths and saw this one release, great to see you back!
