SUILVEN - wild camping on Scotland's finest Mountain!?
Вставка

- Suilven Wild Camp in strong winds in the north-west of Scotland. Suilven is probably the best known and most easily identified mountain in the whole of Scotland. Suilven is 731m high and is in the heart of Assynt's cnoc-and-loch landscape and offers amazing views - probably the best views I have experienced so far in Scotland. Suilven was one of my dream tours I wanted to do as soon as I arrived in Scotland and it didn't disappoint, not the hike but the scenery where the hike is in is just outstanding and I am glad that we ditched our initial plan to avoid strong winds to head to Suilven for a wild camp.
Hope you enjoy my personal dream tour in Scotland's Mountains - ATB Stripey

Absolutely crazy wall at this angle! Walking highlands states:'built in exchange for famine relief during the Highland potato famines'
Thanks Stripey
Brilliant trip Stripey. Louise looked like a good laugh.
That wind at the end would’ve shredded the Vango Blade.
Great film, Slàinte. 🥃🥃
Thanks a lot dougieranger! Yeah, Louise is an absolute lovely person, but I think as well that on a less sheltered spot the Vango blade would have had its last adventure 😂😂😂, Prost 🍻
@@StripeyHatGuy Prost! 🍻
Loved that Stripey
Thanks a lot Fellmandave!
Great video Stripey. What a fantastic area Assynt is🤩!
Thanks a lot John! Assynt is really an outstanding area ❤️
Fantastic mate... mick
It's got to be one of THE top spots in Scotland and enjoyed that, thanks for sharing. We got clagged in and binned it a couple of years ago so I'm keen to get back and camp there too.
Louise should have her own channel, that Blade is a brilliant bit of origami!
That's a shame Andrew, hopefully you are next time lucky 🤞. I am sure that Louise will appear at some point again on a trip as we had all a great time together 🙂
Love your videos. You have given me a lot of memories of when I climbed Suilven in 1995. Am too old to climb now. It’s good that you really appreciate the Scottish landscape. Thank you.
Thanks a lot Michal! The Scottish landscape is just absolutely amazing and a hikers dream 👍
Brilliant stuff guys and another Graham in the bag for you Stripey 😉 Nice of yous to meet a new pal 😊Good memories of me and Robin's trip there. Assynt is a fantastic area. Looked a windy Sunday morning like.
Keep going with the bagging stuff Kev 😂 Yeah was a really nice trip and luckily the worst of the wind was on Sunday morning, can't wait to get back to the area to explore a few more ridge lines or even just some single hill tops. I assume I liked it partly so much as the prominence of the hills is just so great....
Completely knockout views! Hooked on your vids, they are just so good!!!👍👍
Thank you very much Jeffrey 😎

What a tour stripey
Such a stunning location
I really enjoyed that 1

Tam
Thanks a lot Tam! Long drive (thanks Robert!!!), but absolutely worth it.
Excellent sir, Suilven and the upper north western mountains are on another level, they have some seriously impressive geology with some of the oldest rock in the world 😁
Thanks a lot mate! " I'll be back!" 😂😂😂
@@StripeyHatGuy 💀🤭
Fantastic, well done guys. Such a beautiful area, with the multitude of lochans between all the hills. I'm hoping to get up this way for some adventures this summer. Cheers, Andy.
Aye, absolutely Andy! Kind of a boring walk at the beginning but as soon as you reach the lochan at the top the views really nicely open up...such an amazing scenery ❤️
Outstanding Stripey 👏 glad you got the views 🏔 such an amazing part of Scotland 🏴 I got a wee glimpse of Suiliven from Conival and Ben More Assynt 🏔 but I definitely need to visit 😀 brilliant video, atb Brian 👍
Thanks a lot Brian!
Very scenic view. Nice and calm where your tent is as well.
Thank you very much Grant, was probably the best spot on that day 😎
It's really nice to see you doing some different things: one day you're walking throughout a deep glen, searching for a remote bothy; another day you pursuive a summit among lakes and ranges. From the bottom of my heart, thanks. This is inspirational. Go on in this way and be happy.
Great video of Assynt from Suliven, My favourite area, need to get back some time soon.
Yeah an absolutely stunning area, completely understand why it is your favourite area. I am still so happy that I was able to see Suilven as I thought it would happen maybe next year.
Absolutely loved watching this - great shots. 😍 What a brilliant trip this was and made even more memorable meeting you both. I’m delighted the Blade 100 got its 5 minutes of fame just before its retirement. 🤣 Thanks for the laughs and so glad we didn’t blow away. Hope to join you guys on another hike soon!
Hi Louise 👋👋👋
thanks a lot for the great time - really nice meeting you and hey ho I am sure we will see us again on another hike 🤞👍
@@StripeyHatGuy Geez ! What a nice lady you met , her laugh made me laugh too . Did her tent resist the wind ?
Yeah absolutely mate! Louise's tent was actually fine which was kind of surprising for me 😂😂😂.
@@StripeyHatGuy thanks for the video with an amazing landscape !
Just watched this as well as munchies video as I’m aiming to camp up there soon. Brilliant video. Looked a great nice 👌
It is such an iconic hill, hopefully it all works out for you 🤞👍
@@StripeyHatGuy cheers stripey 👌hopefully we get a good night for it
Cracking videos mate
Thank you very much!
Great video Stripey.Views were amazing, just a pity that the wind was playing about with your plans.Have only been up that way once before for Conival and Ben More.😃👍
Thanks Andy! Yeah kind of but if the weather would have been better we would have done a different tour so I am still a kind of happy how it worked out 😊.
Will for sure explore more of Assynt when time allows 👍
Classic Stripey! Absolutely amazing!!! 👍👍👍Paul
Thanks a lot Paul! Assynt is just a different place ❤️
With that laugh, Louise needs her own channel.
Hi Stripey! Excellent views, unlike anything else. Thanks for sharing. Serk
Hi Serk 👋
Absolutely, such a different landscape - never saw something like that before and I am sure I will remember Suilven for a long time. Not for the hike as it was just a hill walk, but for the amazing scenery!
Great video! What a place to camp, superb place. Climbed Suilven with my partner Alison three years ago. All the best to you.
Another great film Stripey, such a stunning part of Scotland. Thanks for sharing
Hi Nick,
thank you very much! Suilven was really a dream tour for me - glad you enjoyed it.
ATB Stripey
truly magnificent mountain, you can see the joy in stripeys face. you know the rocks at the base of suilven are 3.2 billion years old, so its an extra special place, murchie was heroic getting that bag up there. does louise not have a channel?
Hi buddy 👋,
no she doesn't have a channel - she works in the film industry so I guess that is enough movie for her 🤔😂👍.
Congrats on making it there, seeing it, showing it!
Thanks a lot Alasdair!
Absolutely brilliant Stripey. It's such a terrific area with the craggy tops and sea views. Great stuff... Cheers.
Thanks a lot Charlie!
Wunderbar! Danke. :)
Do uou mind reminding us of the name of the cooking system: your wide pot, stove and windbreak/ pot holder? I don't think it's in your list. It looks great...and a wider pot seems to mean you catch more of the flame from a liquid fuel stove.
I will look it up as soon as I am at home mate 👍
You consistently find absolutely stunning spots Stripey! Brilliant to see and be part of.
Hope the Vango blade survived the night.
Stay safe and well mate.
Adge.
Hahaha thanks a lot Adge! Yeah the blade survived just fine, apparently it was a good night in the body bag 😂😂😂
still epic, i might try and get up there for the weekend. not sure i'll be able to get up the hill, probably spend the weekend at the pie shop hehe
Yeha absolutely amazing place! Hope it worked all out and you had a good time.

@@StripeyHatGuy hehe thanks, yeah i just got home, didint make past the bothy, still had a great time, by the time i had got to lochinver, i had already put 3 miles on my legs, with a 60lb load, made it just passed the lodge and stumbled my way off the path and camped. second day was hot, was complete rubber man when i reached the bothy, so i just rested for a day and a half and came home. stunning place though, i hitchhiked from ullapool and the road in was just breath taking.
@@TheMadmacs oh man, you are carrying quite a load with you! The most important thing is that you had a good time outside and it sounds like. It is just an amazing scenery up there ❤️
Perfect looking mountain and area Stripey, and an excellent reason to return is the unclimbed other top.
Linda's laugh sounds perfect aswell😂
Absolutely mate! It was absolutely great to meet Louise - absolutely lovely person!
@@StripeyHatGuy Louise!!!
I don't know what the "L" I thinking about when i said Linda.
Apologies to Louise, I promise you your laughter was memorable. 😊
Amazing mate, what a place to camp. Definitely one on the list! Cheers😄👍🏻
Thanks a lot Mark! Can highly recommend it 😊👍
Superb video Stripey😁👌🏻..What a brilliant tour we had 😍..One our best ones mate..The wind was crazy 😂
Cheers
Robert
Epic adventure mate! Can't wait for your version ❤️
Next time I will drive - promise 😎👍
@@StripeyHatGuy Out next week buddy 😁
Absolutely brilliant mate! What a camp spot it is, one of the best places I’ve camped. Cracking footage 👏👏
Thanks a lot Kev!
What a beautiful place to be. I decided in lockdown that I must explore Assynt. I read Andrew Greig's 'At the Loch of the Green Corrie' which is a beautifully written book about camping, companionship, poetry (Norman MacCaig's), geology and Assynt - I highly recommend it. It was a lockdown read for me and enabled me to dream of where I couldn't go at the time. It was lovely to see it from the top of Suilven in your beautiful wee film
Hi Graham,
thanks a lot for the book recommendation! Currently I am reading about the Highland Clearances (John Prebble, easy read - probably not all facts) in the hope to understand better why things look what they look like.
Suilven/Assynt is really an amazing part of our world and I will for sure read a lot more about the unique landscape and it's features!
Cheers Stripey
@@StripeyHatGuy I read that Prebble book way back and found it provided a really useful overview. I also read his book on the Glencoe massacre. Anyway thanks for doing what you do Mr Hat ☺️
Brilliant Stripey! What an amazing part of the country. I’ll definitely need to get up there at some point. 👍
Hi Ronnie 👋
can definitely recommend it! For me it was definitely worth the long drive with Robert.
ATB Stripey
Hi Stripey. Me and Dad went up to Suilven last summer, Assynt is the most magical place. The walk in from Glencanisp Lodge has to be the most spectacular view in Scotland in my opinion. 😀🏴🥾⛰
Hi Dave,
not actually sure if we went up the same way, probably as there was a lodge were we could have parked for a wee donation. The area in general is absolutely outstanding and for sure high on my wishlist for future trips!
Thanks a lot for watching!
ATB Stripey
@@StripeyHatGuy Yeah you definitely walked in on the same mate mate! 😀
A perfect, good to know.
Thanks a lot 👍
Great view amazing video👍😀
Cheers!
Excellent video stripey !!! always wanted to do suilven maybe one day views look terrific 👍
Thanks a lot Alan! Fantastic hill walk, unfortunately quite far away...Robert and me were pretty knackered on Sunday evening 😂
Brilliant Stripey, just watched this on the big telly. 📺 Nice to see we weren't the only ones to get high winds up there. I would concur with you definitely need a few days to absorb the NW of Scotland.
Thanks a lot Robin. Where ever I looked I saw some ridges/hills which I would love to hike. Just such an amazingly different area ❤️. Hopefully I can manage to get 4 days in a row for myself + good weather 😂🤞
@@StripeyHatGuy the winds have been a right pain this year, even noticed it cycling in to work.
Yeah pretty windy but tbh. I have no comparison yet so for me it is just Scotland 😂😂😂
@@StripeyHatGuy 💯 😂
Very nice video again Stripey 😁
Thank you very much!
Assynt is so special and from Suilven what could be a better view. Phenomenal campsite. OK so perhaps the east top would give a better view. Are you aiming to go back and try the east top when hopefully there is little to no wind?
Yeah definitely planing to go back, hopefully with more time on my hands 🤞
I look forward to your video.
Stunning views, thank you for sharing. Do you think it is possible to cross loch veyatie from base of suilven to cul mor?
Cheers! Needed to have a look at the map and I can only see a bridge direction/close to Elphin (near the street) or at the top of Fiona Loch might where a crossing by foot might be possible. Any approach more direct involves an inflatable at least what I can read out of the map.
Hope it helps!
ATB Stripey
Those were some amazing views👍
Absolutely stunning views Craig, can probably only imagine how busy it gets on good days!
@@StripeyHatGuy I've never been up there but it does seem a really popular mountain
For backpackers who are hiking, light gear is the first choice. I can't stand walking long distances with bulky gear on my back.
What a beautiful place, i really need to spend a lot more time up there its so amazing. You have a bottle holder on the strap of your rucksack, is it bought separately or part of the bag. I use the exos 48, i love the bag but would like a holder like yours👍. Great video. Take care
Hi Phil, I bought the bottle holder separately from my rucksack manufacturer bonfus. You can also get some from AliExpress which are a universal or probably from Gossmar Gear (UK?) - not sure but a lot of companies offer them.
Thanks for watching mate!
