- Climbing my First Knife Edge in Scotland's Mountains, Glencoe! The Bidean nam Bian Range offers fantastic scrambles and climbs above and next of Glencoe's Lost Valley. In this video we are scrambling up to Gearr Aonach via "The Zigzags" (Scramble Grade 1) and the Dorsal Arete (Scramble Grade Moderate). The Dorsal Arete is quite vegetated in places but the sharp knife edge section is extremely memorable - not just because it was my first one in the Scottish Mountains!

Part of that climb looks like the Shark's Fin route, Meru Peak.
Stripes, wow only just found you and cant stop watching your adventures, that was a classic,Ive been up in winter in the gully to the left,Broad gully ?,all that scree was what I went up but mate,the arete is another level. Awesome mate.love the journey.

Hi Kev, thanks a lot. Is absolutely an amazing experience. You could actually avoid the knife edge if it would be to wild at almost any time on the grass ledge on the left side. Steep but definitely possible.

Oh the Barn Wall, looks like we have the some books/ideas. I also thought of the Dinner-time Buttress or some on the west face up and then the summit buttress left flank 😎.

Now that looks a climb mate one slip and that could have been very painful ha ha! The only real scrambling i have done up there was when i was heading down from Stob Coire nan Lochan i took the wrong turn and i ended up climbing down the waterfall next to the B Butress i actually got stuck for a while and i am lucky to be alive if im honest i was a very very lucky daft boy that day ;)
Probably not more risky than crossing the street in a city 😉😂👍. Yeah it is really mad how quick a situation can get serious, had unfortunately the experience twice in the alps (one on a glacier and once with an avalanche).... different story 😉👍

Stripey...can't stop watching your videos! I enjoy scrambling, but don't know if I've got the cohonnies to do stuff like this?? Have you done any training to get you used to this kind of thing, or have you just got no problems with vertical drops, exposure!! 😮💩

I started with going into the mountains like 25 years ago and was a long time active in the German Alp Association (including some climbing, etc. ) so I am a kind of used to scrambles and exposure. And yes I do not have any fright of height's, only a sound respect for height's and mountains 😉👍.
I think the most important is that you scramble nothing up which you couldn't/wouldn't scramble down 😎

@@StripeyHatGuy Its the climbing down if it gets too hairy that I sometimes freak out at - climbing down backwards on steep ground is very dodgy.. would you have been able to down climb something like the Dorsal Arete? 😮
Yeah downhill is definitely more difficult. Yeah the dorsal arete would be possible in the given conditions 😎👍
