I just repotted my oncidium orchid per your instruction here. I have had it 2 years. It has lots of new roots all along the outer limit of the base & a few just sprouting up in the middle of the plant on top between the leaves. I noticed it had a few dead roots in the center of the base but not too many. The medium seemed like a sawdust & the roots were tightly woven around it in the center with all the new growth orbiting that loosely. I didn’t have to cut too much away. But I know there is likely an airpocket up the center of the root structure & some around the new root growth they were huge & healthy. I have it in a pot with holes all over do the air will circulate dry the medium & roots well before watering. Should I be worried about possible air pockets inside the root ball between roots or will the good airflow be enough so I don’t have to worry?
Question: I have many oncidium orchids of the same type and I have an issue in which my oncidium bloom stem gets to be nearly 8' long before putting out sparse flower sets. Why do you think an oncidium orchid begins to have overly long flower stems? Thank you in advance.
Whenever I wake up the day after watching these Orchid Care Beginner Series videos, I always end up finding myself in my room with an orchid I've never had before, somewhat, just popping out of thin air...So spooky.
I just noticed one of my oncidiums has a new growth developing at the base of one of the old, leafless pseudobulbs. Guess the orchid is happy with the care I give it!
I'm so thankful to you for this tutorial ❤. I've had an oncidium for nearly 3 yrs, but have had no flowers after the initial bloom. I now know what needs to be done. 🤩
Thank you so much for this video. Being a beginner, it had enlightened me on the proper care of Oncidiums. I had also learned the different varieties of Oncidiums. I can feel your passion in caring for orchids.
"And as you can see, my orchid in this potting mix has done very well." 20:40 To viewers who are beginners, it is better to start with a mix that is too large and need to water more frequently than to use one that is too small and does not dry quick enough. In home growing conditions for Oncidiums, this small Orchiata mix will likely retain too much moisture if you drench the medium at each watering.
Thank you so much for your hepful video. I have had a smallish oncidium that I recently acquired online and it just didn't seem to be doing well just two months after receiving it. Watching your video multiple times, I gave it a root cut, and repotted it. I am hopeful it will start looking and feeling better.
Hi Danny, Oncidums are my favorite next to the Phals! I currently have the Twinkle Yellow Bird in bloom, Miltonia Kismet Kind Kai and Lavender Kiss, Lavender Taffy. I Love These girls . Thank You for these tutorials, learning so much. And a special thank you for your acknowledgement to me. Happy growing.
Thank you, I was gifted an Oncidium and it was hard to find information. You are young but you know so much about orchids. I am older age 69 but have only been growing Orchids for about 2 yrs. They are "pets" like my cat. I love growing them.
Thank you for all the great information. I haven’t checked, but do you have videos on raising seedlings? Proper watering, feeding, lighting. Just received 6 new kids and want to make sure they grow big and healthy. Thank you again for all the information. Cheers
Found mine quite by accident at Lowe's, of all places. I just can't seem to keep it alive, and the clock is ticking. I live in Florida, and have a green thumb. Phals are fine. This one? Killing me.
@@hellosunshine541 I have gotten alot of my collection from Lowe's. Mostly 'bag babies' but I've also found a few in bloom. Some Ace Hardware stores in Florida also sell orchids. Sorry your orchid is having issues. Not enough info to help....
I’ve never been able to get my oncidiums to bloom. They lose the flowers quickly after buying them. I am putting more effort now into getting them to flower. 🤞🏻
Love to watch all of your videos. Very helpful and informative. Just bought new orchids from the nursery as gift for my self 😅 hoping it will grow as beautiful as yours. Thanks Danny. Merry Christmas from Philippines .😊
Thank you for this information! I especially liked how you compared the lighting/humidity to Phals. That helps a lot. I know what works with my Phals, now I can adjust for my Oncidiums. Looking forward to this type of video but for other types of orchids (vanda, cattleya..)
You really have amazing orchids😍 i wish i could have does too😍 most oncidium here in the philippines is color yellow which i have. So amazing to see that they have different shape and sizes.
Most excellent video for sure. I have, had, may still have, an Oncidium. Could never get the wrinkles out. Only watered once a week, humidity in house 77, ambient temperature 78- 80 F , plenty of light. Beyond me what I'm doing wrong. My other orchids, all phelanopis, are doing fine. I can't win. This one has me beat.
Sometimes, when they become wrinkled, they cant unwrinkle, even if the care is perfect. Sort of like scars. Unless the wrinkling is progressing, your orchid is probably perfectly healthy
Thank you for all your orchid tips. It really helps a lot for us beginners. ❤ Question: I recently got an oncidium orchid with lush and healthy flowers but potted in a pot without holes for ventilation. Should I repot it immediately to an orchid pot with holes or just wait until all the blooms have passed and withered?
Great video, I love the beginners care videos. Please could you do a video on Maxillaria Tenufolia. I have just got one and there is very little online about basic care and preferences
Oh how inspiring, I have but only one oncidium flexuosum which I purchased approximately a month ago and cannot wait until she produces a flower spike, fingers crossed, thank you for all your amazing videos and wealth of information.
Thanks Danny, I appreciated that video. I have some oncidiums which came in tightly packed sphagnum moss, the moss is practically impossible to remove without damaging many roots. Do you know how to deal with that ?
what a gorgeous purple phal. and thx for yet another great vidio. i've been waiting for this one since i mostly have phals and catts but have ventured into the oncidium family recently it was perfect timing and very usefull : 3
Hi Danny! You have beautiful orchids and your channel has got me hooked on them. :) I just picked up my 4th orchid (I bought it on sale, not in the best shape and the buds were not opening), and I was so happy that I was able to get the buds to open and bloom in about 10 days. I'm not sure how I got it open (sort of an "idiot savant" thing hahaha), but I think it was because it just needed watering and I did what you said and dropped the temperature (to about 68 degrees from 74) in that room and it seemed to work. Its so nice when things work out! :) Thanks again for all your tips and keep doing what you do Danny. Be well my friend.
Hello, I have two questions for you pls 1. First of all I am very new to orchids. I have a miltoniopsis with only 2 pseudobulbs, how do I know which one is the oldest? 2. When watering you said to be careful to the new growth, but what about the old? If Water goes inside leaves and on the pseudobulbs is it ok or do we have to treat them like phals? Do they like to be sprayed with water especially when hot? Sorry it might be easy for you but for me that's not so obvious. Thank you 💖
Hello Danny! Really love your channel! I recently bought two oncidiums, and even though the coco peat they were planted in is really wet and I water them before they dry out, their pseudobulbs are wrinkly. Do you have any idea why this happens?
Hi Danny, love all your videos. I keep watching them on repeat and learn something new everytime :) I have a sick oncidium that I have put into one of your ICU setups which is just the spaghnum moss... But the roots grow to a few cm, the tip goes black and the root dies! What am I doing wrong? I noticed this happened with the roots inside and outside the moss. Any guidance would be great because I don't know how to help her anymore. :(
Hi Danny, I was giving a oncidium as a gift i went to repot ,the roots were going around in a circle it was so packed i puled some roots louse at the bottom and repoted it. I really did not know what to do with it. Do I leave it and try again. It is already stress out. Thanking you
i have just bought a no name orchid from Waitrose... had to wait to get home to find out what kind it was lol now I know its a Oncidium and the flowers are the spider like. it came in a small clay pot no drainage holes and it was dry also... :/ so watered left for ten minutes then repotting in a clear orchid pot with bark medium soaked for 5 minutes... just hope she will be ok it does have a flower stem with 3 heads on it.. prob loose those but couldn't leave her in that mess of a pot :)
I grow some oncidium outdoor in a garden in central Florida. I noticed that it likes to put out roots outside of the potting mix onto the edges of the pots. I let them be. Should I repot them in bark?
Question, for intergenerics like bratonias. Which do you follow for care? The seed parent or pollen parent? Or it doesn't matter? Please send help! Thanks
Thank you for this video ! I just bought a /beautiful/ specimen Colmanara (Oncostele) Catatante Pacific Sun Spots orchid at work yesterday. Aside from a small, currently unidentifiable [possibly miltoniopsis?] Orchid, this is really my first big shot Oncidium, and I'm excited to take good care of it ! It has 5 flower spikes at varying stages of growth; and it's taking up all of the pot currently, so I'll be repotting when the flowers have had their time to shine. Until then, I'm wondering if I should fertilize at all while the flowers are still here, and if so if I should keep to quarter the recommended strength of my liquid fertilizer? It's just such a monstrous orchid, I'm not sure if I'll starve it if I don't fertilize once/twice a month while it's flowering. In an old video you mentioned how hardy this rusty flowered hybrid is though- I know I'll be able to take good care of it! I'm so happy to have found it for a few dollars under $15 at Trader Joe's.
Since you are into oncidiums and red colors i would definitely reccomend you Oncidium Nova 'Red Cherry' , mine is currently in bloom and whoaaa the sharp red! The branching and the delicate perfume!! Definitely screams Danny to me.
Hi Danny, have you ever lined orchid baskets with burlap to hold the medium. I have lots of baskets to line for all my outdoor orchids. Thank you for all your educational video you share with us. Thanks for your reply. 🌺
I have a Burr. Sunkissed Buttercup. When I first purchased it the pseudo bulbs were smooth, now they appear somewhat wrinkled.. Does this indicate a problem?
HelloDanny, I repotted a Brassia 2 weeks ago, I got rid of most of the bad roots, as a result it has very little roots left. I think I put it in a pot that might be slightly big for it. I realised that the plant is not anchored properly. Should I put stones on top of the media or should I report it again in a smaller pot?. The plant looks healthy and it has a new 10 cm pseudobulb now. Thank you for the videos, they are clear, visually appealing, beautiful colours
Not sure if you'll see this, but my oncidium sunlight has wrinkly psudobulbs and I'm wondering if I should water her more? I live in a pretty dry area in the US. I'm afraid I might over water it so I wanted to ask if I should water it more often than my phalaenopsis orchids?
Thanks for this! One last question: I have an onchidium alliance that is launching itself up and out of the pot with new growth. When repotting do I put the bulbs over the medium or can they go under a little so the new growths don’t sit far above the medium?
Loved this vid… I had the same thing going on with all dead roots. I cut them off as you suggested planted them back into Spag Moss. What you did not tell us in the video is how long we should expect until we see new roots to grow? My plant looks healthy I have lots of new pseudo bulbs but I want to know what to expect for roots? Thank you for these videos and merry Christmas
Thank you for your wonderful instructions. My question is this: when I purchase and Oncidium, they come with a plastic cage around the pseudo bulbs and foliage. Should I remove the cages?
I always remove them. I think the shippers do that to help in transport. I have never had issues with removing- but at the end of the day it is your decision.
Hello Dani, I’m glad to see this video, my oncindium baby shery chocolate I believe is what I have is having so many issues. A week after bringing home i have been fighting off Aphids and can’t get rid of them, I’ve done alcohol and now we’re tried a pest control spray. Still no luck, they destroyed my 4 spikes of flowers. Now one of my pseudo bulbs lost its top leaf which became yellow before falling off. Any advice would be great appreciated
hey Danny I would like to know if I can keep these plants in south Carolina where I live . ? I keep my house about 72 degrees. please help me on this matter. thank you . I just love your channel
I have my twinkle in a transluscent/clear slotted orchid pot ( with the repot me medium you used). I see a bit of algae on one side of the pot. Do I need to slide my clear pot into a solid cover pot to prevent that? Only watering once a week so it doesnt seem like too much water for the orchid (it seems happy, bloomed in December, growing a new pseudobulb).

Thank you for the info on the care of Oncidiums. I like checking in from time to time just to make sure I am doing something right.

its ok to water an oncidium after repotting and cutting the roots? could this lead to infection?

Hi, check out Danny's video on prevention of aphids on Oncidiums. Very easy remedy.
Good luck💐👍
hey Danny I would like to know if I can keep these plants in south Carolina where I live . ? I keep my house about 72 degrees. please help me on this matter. thank you . I just love your channel
I live in s.c. our area is great for orchids except those that like cool temps.
I was wondering where do you buy your beautiful oncidiums?
