  • Polk L800 Legend review! In our continuing coverage of the Polk L800 speakers, we do a detailed review of this unique product and discuss how to get the maximum SDA (Stereo Dimension Array) effect by optimizing placement and set up. In this review, Matt gives a full account of his objective and subjective impressions of the speakers and provides detailed measurements so you can see how they perform. In our opinion, some other UA-cam reviews simply do NOT understand this product or how to properly set it up to realize the full potential of the SDA technology. This is a must watch video if you're seriously considering this speaker in your music or theater room. We go over recommended electronics to pair with these speakers and placement guidelines that will make or break their performance. Are you ready for SDA? Watch this video to find out!

    You are spot on when saying that todays music could be better for SDA's. The separation of older stereo was what these speakers were designed around. And it really comes thru on them. Plus todays recording engineers are not up to par with the older experts. These speakers will quickly expose a poor recording.
    Another thing. When I listen to my older SDA's, they actually sound a bit foreign when first fired up. I believe the brain must adjust for a few minutes to what is occurring with the crosstalk feature. After that it is no going back and a deep rabbit hole.
    These newer models are likely better. Other than the ported hole.

    Thanks Matthew, great info. By your review I'm guessing these would not be good speakers for watching movies? Also, as far as power goes, are these by campable on the back so that you could just hook up two channels from a receiver?

    • @PoesAcoustics
      @PoesAcoustics 3 роки тому +3

      These actually are great with movies and they are biampable. You could do that but the receiver power supply will still be a limiting factor.
      As for the movies issue, they project an amazing image. As part of a multichannel system they create an even more dimensional effect than normal. However they are a bit dynamically limited compared to my reference speakers. But my reference speakers have dynamics nearly no mainstream speaker has. So I would say for more than 90% of consumers these are adequate.

      I have L600 & L800’s, and my buddy has the L600’s on a NAD T778 with two REL subs.
      There is no replacement for displacement. The 2x 10’drivers and power port deliver on bass with the right amp that delivers bass. Not all amps are a match for the L800’s.
      The 600’s are fantastic, but like all towers to get direct firing loud stereo bass from Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, etc one needs big drivers which is why I purchased the L800s and I still have 4 subs and the L600’s on the rear.

    Thanks for the review. After owning a few flagship large tower speakers from different brands, I'm really on the look out for a speaker of this quality to be a shade dark and rolled off on top. Overwhelmingly I've found that these large flagship tower speakers try and impress with as you say a 'revealing' top end and ultimately it becomes a huge let down and quickly causes listener fatigue. Who cares about how big and loud a speaker can play if it's just bright when you turn it up. Rant over (and continuing my search for now) :)

    Regarding the SDA effect and binaural vs multi-track recordings. I own these speakers and while I love them, there are times when I want to reduce the SDA effect. I don't want to kill it completely by unplugging it. Just to be able to turn it down a bit. If only someone was willing to reverse engineer the circuit then we could design something to do that. • @PoesAcoustics

      Hi Erin. The speakers weigh in excess of 120lbs, arrived in the midst of Covid, and have angled baffles. As such, we just couldn’t measure them as we usually do. The only approach I could do, under the circumstances, was an in-room method using Geddes take on nearfield scanning. Basically I use a Legendre spherical extrapolation spliced with nearfield LF data. I then processed the data into that graph with VituixCAD.
      Verticals and more data would have been nice but without some big strong help I am not sure I can do that. When I tried doing it in room, once I got past 15 degrees in either direction I got results I didn’t trust. Especially below tweeter axis. I hope to remeasure these in the future to get better results. Since I had Polks own internal data, I felt confident in publishing this much.
      I had an easier time measuring the JTR Noesis 212’s then these. Just a big heavy load with a delicate finish.

    I own Polk SDA speakers that were built in 1986, I purchased new. They really like power. 500 watts per channel is not too much. But they sound best at medium volume levels away from the wall, with a seating position even farther away from any wall. They need air to breathe! The 'sweet-spot' is equidistant to the two speakers (as far back as placement is wide). These speakers 'trick' the listener into hearing a wider than normal sound stage by each speaker canceling out the opposing channel. Not the best, most precise, nor cleanest speakers in the world, but can be very entertaining with strong right to left recordings like The Beatles or Pink Floyd.

    Matthew, much appreciated.
    Question; I don't believe I've ever seen a horizontal response set of measurements like that... ie., one can see about 400hz the onset of the typical directivity pattern. However, the longer wavelengths in the octaves below that point, the variance displayed in this graph isn't oftentimes found in directivity measurements.
    I understand you stated this measurement graph was the conventional inside facing array. I'm curious what's creating the aberrant behavior down below 100hz.
    100hz = 11.3'
    1/4 wavelength of 100hz is nearly 3', so how could variances be resolved by the incremental process?
    If the measurement data is accurate, that tells me that perhaps the adjacent dimensional array driver's out of band energy may be influencing the result down in the lower octaves.
    Thoughts?
    I don't believe I've read anything nor am I at all experienced with this latest offering. Also, I've never owned or setup a Polk SDA.
    Thanks for the enjoyable and compelling review ... it was interesting and makes me want to check out this effect for myself. Good stuff.
    Kevin

    • @PoesAcoustics
      @PoesAcoustics 4 роки тому +1

      Hey Kevin,
      I’m actually not sure what you are asking, but SDA was not active in anyway during the measurements. Because of how it works, if you unhook the umbilical cord and send a mono signal to one speaker, it behaves as a normal speaker. The SDA dimensional array is inactive.
      The roughness in the bass response is just the norm for any speaker.
      If you mean why is the speaker at all directional at very low frequencies, all monopole speakers will be slightly directional at very low frequencies. It’s also possible there is slight measurement artifacts, but because I compared these to real anechoic measurements, I believe them to be accurate.
      So no it’s not an SDA effect. First because it’s not turned on in those measurements. Second, because the array wouldn’t be functioning that low in frequency.
      However, if you could clarify if you are referring to the response issue as amplitude or directivity related, that would be helpful.
      Keep in mind, because the LF response was derived from a specially processed Gated signal and a nearfield measurement, there will inevitably be two things, one is far more resolution than those relying solely on gating, and the other is artifacts from the approach. The artifacts are generally not meaningful though.

      Thanks for responding
      Distilled down a bit more;
      the measurements indicate directivity related amplitude variations significantly lower in frequency than should be seen due to wavelength size.
      I don't believe I've ever seen amplitude resolution at 10° horizontal variations ... down at 200hz, 100hz, etc, from a loudspeaker with vertically aligned LF sources (two 10"s and the port).
      ---------------
      Having no memory of encountering this before, I was speculating that the adjacent 5" cone from the 𝘚𝘋𝘈 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘦, played a role in it's out of band energy below it's crossover region.
      I speculate this despite knowing you had the inter-connecting SDA cable removed.
      ---------------
      Curious as to the cause, I don't believe I've ever seen such a result.
      Thoughts?

      @@FOH3663 ok I double checked to be sure I’m not nuts. James Larson has confirmed we see this kind of variation with our outdoor groundplane polar measurments we have done on subwoofer’s. We also see it with Klippel and anechoic data. It would seem, in theory, like this would be correct. But beyond 100hz we do see that monopole LF sources show some slight directionality. We also see that they show some amplitude variation. Why? Who knows. It could be diffraction effects at very low frequencies. Interactions with the port. I also wouldn’t put too much weight into this as I didn’t measure them outside. These were too big and heavy and I didn’t have help from the manufacturer to stick them out in a field on a 6’ + stand.
      I didn’t use normal gating for this so there is much higher resolution at low frequencies, but it also uses a multi-pole LF model much like Klippel does so it’s possible it over-simplified things. I asked Earl Geddes, who wrote the software, why his basic model showed such a different response from that or my nearfield and he said the extrapolation model represents the field with a set of poles. That he simplified the LF model since the room contributes so much. I then took that raw data and blended in the nearfield response. That likely means the variation was from the far field Legendre extrapolation. I hadn’t paid any attention until you brought it up.
      When I have some time I will maybe play around with a subwoofer to measure it using this technique and see what happens. Maybe there is a slight error being introduced? Or maybe it’s normal. I just am not sure.

      I basically agree with you on this. This method works surprisingly well but an active DSP method is better yet. I think there is something to be said for using active cancelation drivers but DSP is still a better approach.
      Still, don’t write these off. It’s impressive what they do. If Polk gets serious about this, I am sure they could introduce an affordable DSP option.

There is a track in which a woman comes back to his place and goes from where they were into the bathroom and makes a remark about how it is bigger than her apartment. When she walked out of the room on the track, it was like she walked out the door of my barracks room and was talking from the hallway.

    I thought you said 4.5’-5’ feet was the optimal distance apart but at the end your saying 8’... I’m confused..

    • @PoesAcoustics
      @PoesAcoustics 4 роки тому +2

      It’s based on distance to the listening position. It’s not a fixed number. So in my narrow room with short listening distance of 8’ you want to be about 5’ apart. Less could be even better. If your listening distance is a more normal (for a speaker this large) 12’ or more. You can get into wider spacing.
      The thing to keep in mind is that you want to avoid strong sidewall interaction and they want to be closer together than they are from you. 25%-50% differential is ideal. They can be father apart if the room is wider, but they will always be their best if they are farther from you than they are apart.
      Here is an example: your room is 12’ wide and 30’ long. You can sit 17’ away from the speakers. Even though you are very far from the speaker, you will want a solid 3’ from the sidewalls. That means the speaker should still be a close 6’ apart.
      Now let’s say your room is 18’ wide and 20’ deep. In this scenario, you could listen at a distance of 15’ from the speaker. Having the speakers at a distance of 8’ to up to 12’ apart would all be ok.
      Let’s say the room is wider than long, day 20’ wide but only 18’ deep. In this scenario, you want some distance between you and the back wall, so I would t sit any more than 15’ to 16’ back from the speaker. Even though the room is really wide, I would not place the speakers any farther than 12’ apart. Maybe closer even.
      Let’s go more extreme. It’s a 20’ wide room but you only have 15’ of depth. In this case, an 8’ listening distance makes a lot of sense. As such, a 5’ distance apart could also make the most sense.

      @@PoesAcoustics Isee. Thank you for the detailed descriptive reply. With my rf7iii I have them roughly 9’ apart becasue of my room they have to be this far apart or else it would block entry through the hallway to the bathrooms and about 12 from my listening position and a width of the room at about roughly 13’. And I fee this is the best positioning Ives had yet for them tho it might not be the most proper way for them yet the soundstage is vast and lovely and they sound superb. Before I bought them I was thinking about getting the legends but I’m kinda glad I didn’t for how hard they are to get working properly and my inexperience at this point I am at on my sound journey. There is my JTR Noesis review for a prior group I worked with. I have a new JTR review coming on the Noesis 110HT.
      In my opinion they are a much better speaker than the Polks. They are much more sensitive, capable of far higher output, and very linear. They used to be voiced a little bright for my taste but I’ve influenced Jeff apparently in my reviews and he has changed the tonal balance a bit in his designs to be even more neutral or even a little on the warm side (in a good way, not colored way).
