  • Polk Audio has announced an all-new flagship line of speakers called the Legend Series. There are six models in the series: two bookshelf speakers, two floor-standers, a center-channel speaker, and a height/elevation speaker for home theater use. The range-topping L800 SDA sells for $6k/pair and features a unique “Stereo Dimensional Array” (SDA) to cancel out stereo interaural crosstalk and deliver immersive sound with precise imaging. Watch our interview with Bronson Gannon of Polk to learn more about this series and why they brought back legendary SDA technology.

      Probably 4,800 in 3-6 years, but don’t expect 50% off like the LSiM series. This series will be legendary, so don’t expect easy prices or discounts. It’s a specialty product.

    I have the Polk LSIM 705's currently and if these sound better than those it must be amazing. If you can't afford these check out the 705's and matching center channel and surround speakers while Polk is still selling them. They are nothing short of incredible.

    I've always loved Polk remembering a time I got to listen to some SDA CRSs and Monitor 10s back in the late 80s and early 90s. But i was getting a bit annoyed by the fact they had no changes to their speaker line in at least the last 5 years and it's finally time they come out with a true statement audio speaker. I hope to get to listen to these speakers at some point.

    I scored a pair mint like new condition Polk monitor 5's at Goodwill for $25! From what I can tell there 1990 vintage and have the less desirable non peerless tweeter I guess. (Monitor Series 5 45407) I can say I love the little things yeah tweeter maby little hot? (I actually thought one had a blown driver but a wire was bumping on the cone of the passive radiator quick fix! sweet! . I had a chub for old monitors after I found them and on Facebook marketplace I found a pair of "excellent condition just missing the interlink cable" the big daddy flagship Polk SDA1 towers! and the guy said "need em gone make me an offer try me take about anything. But I was totally tapped, I was heartbroken... I would love to build a home theater system with all old Polk monitors with SDA1 for mains. I'd love to have a full legend setup but it's beyond my financial status. I've been a Polk fan since I bought a Polk db12 subwoofer for my Jeep back in 06, very nice medium performance sub. I think i would trade my old JBL L100s for pair of old SDA1's

    I bought a pair of new SDA-1c's back in about 1987 (a year before my fist child was born) and they still impress today. I've integrated them into a home theater system and they work perfectly fine. I originally bought them with NAD 2200pe amp and Carver C-1 preamp...all still working like day one. In fact, my oldest has insisted I put them in the will to go to him, and he'll have to wait because I'm never giving them up, lol.
    I've since created my "lust after" two channel system centered around a pair of Marten Logan electrostats and Krell amp, but my heart will always belong to my first love, the SDA-1c's.
    Glad to see Polk brought the SDA line back. Now if they would only bring Matthew Polk back!

    Thanks for giving us the rundown Gene. One thing did surprise me though in this video. In fact I think you bit your tongue. When he mentioned 20 hertz out of the Tower with dual 7-inch drivers that was pretty absurd. No way that thing is producing usable Bass Down a 20 Hertz. I even be skeptical of 30 Hertz. I know it was a warm and fuzzy video but you could have called them out for a second I was expecting it. Also for fun, I was able to find a deal online for their lsim707 towers for $1,100 shipped! How stupid is that? Their previous Flagship Tower that weighs a hundred pounds each. If I didn't have three sets of towers in my 1100 square foot condo right now I would buy them instantly LOL

    their power port is gonna be in court with fyne audio tratrix, but Also it's another problem with our patent law system. any established company can drop like 2g max in tax deductible costs while for any fledgling business they'll charge you upward us 4 grand every year just to ride it out until you go broke and then the same patent gets stolen by one other their other clients. it happens to everyone I know who tries to work in electronic engineering and is why we're trapped in the 1980s.

    I get the concept but, if speakers are made to represent real instruments, the left microphone will pick up some of the sound from the right. and the right will pick up some of the left part.
    I don't know.

      Of course there will be some bleed in a live recorded performance. However, if this recorded track is played back on a system with bad stereo separation the result could be worst then the recorded performance. Great stereo separation should create a sound at your ear that's close to the original recording rather live or in the studio.

    • @douglassmith5466
      @douglassmith5466 5 років тому +1

      Whatever left to right information is on the recording the SDAs will recreate. The SDA drivers on the outside will simply correct the stereo signal your ear hears. It will just reproduce it to 1 ear, right or left for each channel. The SDA driver pairs go to just 1 ear at a time. It does not garble up the stereo image. It will have the pinpoint imaging a good set of earphones have. In headphones the right ear hears the right channel alone, the left the left channel. The SDA just gets rid of the crosstalks signals, they get nulled out. Then what you hear is the inner pair of woofer tweeter. That leaves just the information for each corresponding ear. If there is a little left channel sound in the recording, and the rest or majority is in the right channel, that little bit will play in the left channel. On a van halen cd i have Eddies guitar is in the right channel panned to the right, but his echo or reverb comes out the other channel, the left, the way is was recorded or mixed in the studio. My explanation is not the best, there's probably a much better explanation on google. But the news is that the SDAs don't change the music signal, they just make sure only your right ear hears only the right stereo music channel, the left ear only the left channel. I think even on an older MONO vinyl lp, the image would be a little more in focus.

    I want these, but my only concern is my seating position would be both one seat to the left and right of the sweet spot. I have one of those love seats with a console in the middle. From what i have heard so far off center it sounds muddled. Is that right?

      God no! The sweet spot is huge with SDA's. I have the older models and live them.

      I own Signature Series S55's. I let my visitors sit on my armchair which is positioned bang-on on the sweet spot. I get to sit on the three-seater with my right ear to the right front speaker, but I enjoy the sound the same!👍... sometimes I sit there deliberately, just to have an up-close & personal moment. Man it's just as awesome👌. The SDA's would probably have a wider sound stage.

    Why do you call it a power port? it's just a Port

    • @ghostrecon3214
      @ghostrecon3214 5 років тому +1

      Somewhere online there is a comparison of the powerport vs a q acoustics speaker port and the q acoustics was chuffing, the polk port was silent.
      Could be called quiet port but marketing probably prefers POWER lol.

      @@johnsweda2999 Yeah I am not sure. They have that flared cylinder with a curved cone protruding into the cylinder, I thought that was the power port but I may be mistaken.

    I had a pair of the SDA's back in the late 80's and some Carver Platinum's - The Carver's are still one of the best sounding speakers ever made hands down and I wish I could get a new pair today! Sonic Hologram Generator mixed with Plat's would eat these alive however I am glad P0lk is back on the market with SDA arrays.........

    as I am listening to this video,the audio is being heard through a pair of SDA 1C studio speakers. Polk will need to make them more affordable with some smaller models.

    Any chance of reviewing some Tekton Double Impacts?

    I've had many Polk speakers for years. Good with music not so good with home theater in the high end compared to Klipsch. But like it's been said, long term listening to music through their horn tweeters, give you a piercing headache. I've tried it. Silk dome tweeters from Polk should change because of the changing depends of home theathers.

      First time I hear this order swapped around. I've heard the opposite on many reviews. I own S55's. They sound great musically, and they excell in home theatre. My friend has Klipsche's, we had a four hour (music) listening session, and I didn't notice any ear fatigue at all. Hope you got your setup correctly? Sound is a subjective issue i guess.

      I don’t get ear fatigue listening to my Klipsch either. Absolutely love them for both HT and music. The new Polk SDA look very nice as well. There also way out of my wheelhouse.

    I just upgraded from Polk Model 10B 's that came after my first foray into Higher End sound with a Double Advent system I well used over ten years! If I like 'em I tend to keep 'em for a LONG time. Oh and by the way, t Maggie LRS is an AMAZING speaker that also has an outstanding sound stage but a very limited sweet spot, how wide is the sweet spot for the SDA? Thanks again for all you're doing for this crazy hobby!
