"One of the heaviest number known to mankind."
- Jason Newsted, 1989
it still is
And they've somehow managed to make it sound even heavier.
@@guyincognito2851 yes i feel it too
@@guyincognito2851 no. They will never come close to Seattle 89
@@simonefrara1257 that performance left a huge impression on me when I first saw it some 20 years ago (Live shit: Binge and purge 🤘), made me fall in love with the song. There's just something about the riffs on this one. They're big, fat, ugly, and mean. And I mean that in a good way!
The opening clean riff is so haunting. Gets me everytime
Yes Indeed I agree Brother it sounds Ultimately - Hauntingly cool !!! 😎
@@hetfieldye8463 Agreed agreed & Agreed!! 💯!! ; )
This song used to scare the shit out of me when I was a kid. This performance especially with Kirk's screaming third verse bridge brought that feeling back 🤘
this was the song that would put me to sleep surprisingly after battery and master of puppets when i would listen on my discman while in bed. it’s like embedded in my dreams/mind now. i swear to this day when i’m lying in bed and it’s real quiet i hear that intro riff and puts me to sleep every time.
@@hetfieldye8463 i always feel like they should switch Sad But with Thing. It has the same heavy feel, so it can swap out really well. I feel like thats how they can play around with their setlist. Take one song they regularly play and swap it out with another song with the same vibe. Like Fuel, they need to ditch that for Prince Charming. Same album era, same sort of speed and vibe.
I have to say that, at almost 56 years old, James' metal scream is still badass.
@@thegoodguy44 Your mom has no ear for music. Hetfield might still have the best voice in touring rock. What do you have?
@Luke Bargowski yeah, I'd love to see The Good Guy scream his lungs out.
@@thegoodguy44 You're just a shitbag troll. Smh
@@thegoodguy44 to say you dont like them u spend enough time watching their vids!
Hell yeah it is
1. Heavyness
2. Dat clean riff
3. The solo
4. Epic vocals
5. Epic live performance
6. The super sound of Master of Puppets (the album)
Reasons why this is my favorite Metallica song
Bruh it's IMPOSSIBLE to pick one favourite metallica song!

@@ultimateeditorz7754 I did. It's "Damage, Inc."

1:14 this first verse alone kills the argument that Hetfield lost his grit with age. dude has that shit on lock, it’s just much more controlled and comes out when needed. dudes a legend
James sounds like a beast
@@hetfieldye8463 Check out 'Fight Fire With Fire' live in this same Metallica channel. He's a beast indeed.
He's just a fucking beast in general, and a genuine good person to boot
I went to this show, James's voice was amazing, much better than I expected
Dunno. He sounds like shit here most of the times, really lacks control over his voice, imo.
I want a Tool/Metallica world co-tour so bad it hurts
I don't know what happened but James' singing has been outstanding recently.
@5:17
@@philip_si That's pretty much the moment that made me write the comment, with that deep roar and then scream right after it.
it’s the power of the stache
Becoming Better every year. Agreed
Sounds like he's stopped trying to force himself to sound young, he's really taking full advantage of having an older voice which mixes really well with the lowered tuning they've been using for a long time now.
I really hope they play Call of Cthulhu + The Thing That Should Not Be + Dream No More in a row someday. That’d be a great Lovecraft tribute.
I fall in love with that ! My favorite band tribute my favorite writer .
Don't forget All Nightmare Long, James said that was about the Hounds of Tindalos, another Lovecraftian themed song. Honestly, I would love to see them do a Lovecraft-themed concept album, much like how Judas Priest did with Nostradamus.
I have been saying that since 2016. I would love to see/hear that!
Desenova 913 oh damn, that would be awesome! (Sidebar: I feel like Nostradamus got a bad rep, I really enjoyed that album)
Ktulu trilogy
the crowd reaction when he played the first two chords >>>>
I was there,just like.......NO-F+CK´`NG WAY!!!
Probably the best live version yet! That SOLO!!!!! I still come back and watch it in awe 🎉
OK BUT CAN WE GIVE KIRK A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR THAT SOLO
We can 👏 👏 👏 👍
Honestly it sounded fucking insane, I hope they play this in London.
Yess
YES WAH CAN!
@@juliuszsowacki4568 Mozart made a one time breath above the grass to listen to this... that says it all.
Such an awesome song and a great performance. Always reminds me of Jason introducing the song in Seattle '89 saying "it's about THE heaviest number known to mankind" and he's right.
Heavy as Ozzy in his Prime...
Fritz Ritzinger one of my faves from master of puppets!!!
"Seattle '89" the best Version ever...
lars? yep, but james is dying on vocals on this one.
5:04 gives me fucking goosebumps. James has found a powerful voice again
Keep in mind that there are effects added to those parts of the song
his voice was always great
4:50 i like the little "echo" he put on that part. That was cool.
I like the way the audience just screams the name of the song!
It’s simply f*cking insane
Okay I love how at 4:07 Kirk literally says "wahhh" while doing his solo that's beautiful
It's ingrained in him
The thing that should not be is honestly my favorite Metallica song.
Mines to hands down
Not even close
Mine too
Man! James since he left the Mostacho his voice changed enormously, it sounds incredibly spectacular
Spectacularrrrr
Jajajajaj maybe is just a mental game, pure coincidence, but what's really true is that his voice has improved a lot. Sounds like back in the 90's during the garage days
This song suits him it seems.
Don't forget about the hair too
3:50 hot damn Kirk! Coming in hot.... Nailed the solo 🔥
Hell yeah!
One of my favorite metal solos of all time
Kirk is really good in solos during this tour! Was in Madrid and EVERY solo was perfectly done by him.
Dorky Ork It fits the song so well, sounds creepy, evil, mysetious. Love it. :D
He usually nails most solos from songs before Hardwired. My guess is that's because he winged them all on Hardwired and actually sat down and wrote the others.
Thrash Metal will never die because of this band. The best one yet
There's going to be plenty of bands that will carry the torch after they retire man havok hatchet bullet for my Valentine and others
@Lord Of Onions bullet for my valentine are definitely metalcore but they have lot of thrashy songs and parts. Such as the last part of Tears dont Falp
@@droideca88 like I said you got bands like havok another new band just came out a couple months ago called agony reigns they're pretty good
@@droideca88 i loved tears Don't Fall that was a great alternative song back in the day
Steven Carter Can’t forget Power Trip and Sylosis
The Thing That Should Not Be is heavier than Sad But True
Change my mind
Ukraine gives 3,6 *
@@adamkovac1991 he's delusional
Duh. Anything that predates the black album is heavier.
And Lovecraft is heavier than everything written in horror in the last 70 years, exception for Clive Barker;)
Take a look at this song in Seattle ‘89, then you’ll understand.
It's not a just song. It's a great dramatic performance! And what a voice, plays and energy!!! Thank you, Metallica!
James is the coolest dude on the planet!
Well, but kirk is a close 2nd.
No,Jason is.
I love him, but lars doesn’t really look that cool playing drums
Lars isn’t in the top 4 coolest Metallica members of all time for me
Yes he is
And the way kirk kept bending that super high note kinda sounded like Seattle 89
Sparks they do a lot of stuff live like they used to do live
I love Jamez doing his best at his age, trying to get that late 80' feeling in his voice, kudos for the guy.
the secret is in the bear
I was at this concert. One of the most underrated songs and one of my favs, i couldnt believe it when i heard the first chord, sounded killer
4 horsemen of heaviness

Harvester of sorrow
Sad but true
I would say Lepper Messiah instead of Harverster of Sorrow
@@redcityyyI would add leper up their on the list
Got to have Creeping Death 💀
Dream No More and (maybe) Am I Savage (just for the breakdown) could go here too

Now this is true heavy metal at it’s finest.
Thrash*
I think
Snip Snip they are a thrash metal band, yes. They are even a heavy metal band. (except they don’t do the low pitch screaming)
The song is so spot on, that drum and bass are kick ass, Kirk is killing it on guitar and James is sounding great during this leg, his vocals are so raw like back in the 80’s before he blew his voice out. I’ll say it again, I’m loving these setlists I wish I could go to every show....🎸☠️🤟🏻
@@thegoodguy44 Yet here you are studying up on Lars and everything he does. Such an obsession is the sickest, shittiest kind. If you dont like him and have such a great ear for music, why aren't you out revolutionizing music like they have or at least focusing your energies on better music?
I’m not saying Lars is the best drummer ever, I just liked him on this song (And I do know music by the way). Nicko McBrian plays a lot better live, he has bigger kit and is ten years older than Lars. Chris Adler and. Mikkey Dee are also great live drummers, plus other I didn’t mention.
Are you kidding? Lars is fucking everything. He's out of the timing many times, it's embarassing. Yet, it sounds because the song is great and well..it's metallica. But no, this is absolutely not spot on.
Gets me every time at 5:07. He is the scary grandpa telling a story. LMAO
Hilarious!
Nearly 40 years on, still killing it. I love how you can really hear the audience join in on the emotional climax of the song, the final verse "Drain you of your sanity, face the thing that should not be!!"...epic. Newstead was correct in calling this song one of the heaviest numbers known to mankind.
I was there and this "HAHA!!" IN 2:22 gave me shivers all over my body!!!!
Love goosebumps from simply a bad ass live band😆 so natural…can’t “fake” it It’s so real
Yes.. me too
Oh, that was beautiful. James's vocals changing through the song made it that much more eerie. LOVE IT!!
Kind of a rare modern era live capture of one the best songs from this band !!!!
Perfect performance !!!
One of the greatest vocal performances I’ve ever seen. Gives me chills. Truly breathtaking song.

I wonder if anyone noticed this was the real tempo of the recording which makes it slower and heavier. Best live version I have ever heard. Robert Trujillo is a good fit for this band

You Guys are awesome🤘
Hair doesn't make the music, the hard work and drive does, this one is definitely a original classic

Southern European crowds maybe. Ain't much energy to be had in Northern European crowds.
@@gringochucha Fair point =) I guess when they upload some songs from the later dates in Northern Europe we'll see how much worse the crowds are for this tour.

4:25 Jesus Christ James, so badass and spooky
Paul Zuegn really...?
@Paul Zuegn Hes not real bud
@Paul Zuegn ?
@Paul Zuegn if that's what you wanna believe that's cool but don't go around trying to force people to not say shit because you don't agree. Freedom of speech is a right for a reason, so is freedom from religion. Do as you please and let others do whatever they want.
@Paul Zuegn I mean.. You definitely were forcing your ideologies. No matter how you'd wanna look it.
I'm great friends with a lot of Christians and being an Atheist I have no issue with these friends of mine and their religion as long as they don't pretend to be holier than thou. Puns intended? You can listen to fucking Slayer and be a Christian. My best friend and Co-worker is a 100,000% Christian but can shred some Slayer and not be fearful of his deity. You should be able to do the same with anything and everything in your life. Be free, man. Don't ever weigh yourself down because you're fearful of a God, if your God is so loving and kind he'd let you do anything that wasn't rape, murder, stealing and lying. Live your life and let others live theirs with dignity, privacy and respect.
Respect and love, my man.
The drums at the start sound so powerful. Especially the snare. Props to James for those vocals too.

They have been returning
The Good Guy why do I always see you downplaying Metallica’s performance, it’s pissing everyone off trying to enjoy it
@@seekanddestroy9835 we the metal militia can't allow him to get to us. He has his opions and we have ours. It's okay man. Just accept it and move on. Our difference over musical performances shouldn't divide us, but yet just another perspective given.
It's because the song is in a lower tuning. It's easier for him to scream
Nicole Weatherly Yeah fair enough. Metallica get so much unnecessary hate that’s all
1:20 holy shit that scream.
His voice aging like fine wine. Cuz it was really good until 1997 never really good after that expect for some years here and there. But went back to shit in 2010 until around 2018. That’s when you started to notice it was getting better

That rhythm bridge from Kirk's solo to James' vocals is honestly the most metal thing ever done by Metallica. Lars' drumming really makes it so.

I'm a drummer and I know when the timing is a little off... Lars was such a good drummer timing wise up until these last 4 years man. Still one of the best bands ever. Long live baby
In my opinion, their absolute best and heaviest song. Absolutely awesome to hear that they’re adding in their set list again!
Damn what a great performance of a great song! James vocals: outstanding, gritty and like the old days with his rhythm guitar playing perfecto! . Lars drumming: tight and heavy. kirks solo: flawless. Robs bass playing: perfectly in the pocket!...can I get an AMEN!

Lars is having a tough time with the tempo on this one. It still sounds killer.
I know, right??
They clearly wanted to play it slower, like they do with a lot of their old songs nowadays, but Lars is dragging even more, and you’ll occasionally hear these awkward hiccups where the beat is just so far off.
1 2 4 3
It’s painfully off
I can't fathom how Lars played the parts on the AJFA album… and suck this much years later. Was he a hack all along or did he lose his chops??!!
