In high school, the students were tasked with playing a song for the class and explaining its significance/meaning. I chose this one and connected it to the whole Cthulhu mythos. Needless to say, I was the weird kid from there on out. Haha

Everyone knows the songs that made this album a hit but it's songs like this, disposable heroes, leper messiah and Orion that cemented this album as a classic. Everyone has to hear this album before they die

I personally love Kirk's solo in this track. Matches the song so perfectly. Absolutely right it personifies the theme of the lyrics about chuthulu mythos. It's got that nastiness about it as if you're about to get swallowed whole.
I still gets chills when he says, "Not dead which eternal lie, stranger eons death may die."
Honestly surprised to find people that don't know about Cthulhu at this point.

got to know him when i was 15 (1993) and i have worshipped him ever since;-)
Movies like “The Thing” and “The Mist,” while not by lovecraft, are Lovecraftian stories. Basically stories about (usually) tentacled monsters too crazy to comprehend on the surface, and allegories about the inner workings of the human imagination once you peel them back. Cliff was a well-read kid.
I love those movies. I love cosmic horror. It’s probably my parents fault… they didn’t want to get a babysitter, so they just took me to the movies with them
The only song that seems to bring out their true viscerality live. There's no bad performance of this live in their entire career. They always seem to hit the pocket with it

This album is in the library of Congress. This album is the heaviest album that all heavy bands take their influences from. Even though they are a little older now, they can still tear it up live. That’s why they are the best

nobody ever reacts to AM I EVIL, even though metallica played it at every show in the 80s. it was the second song i ever heard from metallica & was the song that hooked me on them. a hidden gem the reaction community has not jumped on.

He tried it a couple of times but some people started throwing shit at him like "you're not a real metalhead" and "you hiphop-head poser" so he just nicked that from the title. He did reflect his new musical tastes on the new intro curtain though with it shifting from his old hiphop intro to an electric guitar arrangement so yeah

That guitar solo is so fucking good, it literally sounds like an insane giant tentacled cosmic horror monster laughing and screaming maniacally at you. It's actually mental it's so good how its like just notes but it paints that picture in your head holy shit man

As powerful and great as every track is on this album, you can amplify that ten fold when listened to as a whole. It has peaks and troughs, lulls and moments of frenetic power. It is a powerhouse album and I would heartily recommend that when you've done the tracks individually doing the whole album in one and letting it take you on its journey. Thats when you truly appreciate why its generally regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time! 🤘🤘🤘

I love that Kirk describes his solo as what he envisions it sounds like to get sucked under water by swirling tentacles.
This and Harvest of Sorrow are the heaviest Metallica songs. Got to listen to those songs with enhanced bass.

The last song of those, I feel that it is much more frantic and fast enough that you yearn to have such a long mess to headbaging in its splendor, do not rule out the song "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" that talks about the perspective and posture of a person having to endure and tolerate the confinement of a madhouse or a prison itself, causing himself the point of falling into madness itself. Missed this particular tour as i was in the service at the time, but did catch the next one for the Black Album. Have seen them many times and have not been disappointed with any of them, awesome band.
This song is a hybrid of an obscure horror movie from the 1970s and a bad nightmare. The guitar solo is disturbing, shivering. The whole song just keeps you on the edge of your seat. Absolutely fascinating.
The song's about Cthulhu. Straight up and nothing else. Haha.

Sanitarium has always been one of my favorites on this album. I can't wait!!! What an amazing album! I predict that Leper Messiah will be his least favorite song on this album. It took me a decade or so until I loved it, too! A perfect album!

1984 - I was a jock freshman in high school telling my jock friends about Ride the Lightning.. They thought it was just "noise." By my Junior year, the entire football, baseball and basketball teams were listening to Master of Puppets to work out with.
What a great song. For a really long time this was probably my favorite track off this record.
My favorite part is the outro with Lars doing some very cool fills.
Orion is one of the beautifulest songs ever!

@Juicey Kisses Well, nearly every song on St. Anger was in Drop C, so Some Kind Of Monster isn't alone. Besides, even drop C wasn't the lowest they've ever been. The lowest was Invisible Kid (happens to be on St. Anger), which was tuned down to Drop G#.
