- New 3er!! 7 Generations of 3 Series, bring us to todays video! THE 3 SERIES has been the best selling BMW since it’s debut in 1975. It’s a car that introduced us to the idea of a sporty small sedan, and since has irrefutably led the way in this segment.

As much a cornerstone of the Ultimate Driving Machine as any other BMW, today we take a look back at this history of the 3 Series before having some fun in the first exciting M Powered version, the M340i Xdrive!
The car has grown, 3.3 in longer, 0.6 in wider but as it’s based on the CLAR platform, it’s 50% more ridged thanks to use of high strength steel and aluminium and 55 kg lighter.
The grille is not as offensive as the new M3, I find it quite handsome. And the car is inundated with the hoffmeister kink tradition.
Like the M3 and M4, the 320d and M340i both available in either RWD or X-Drive! Giving customers choice.
My favourite part is the engine though: tStraight 6 B58 engine, already award winning, produced pros374 BHP, 500NM, 4.4 seconds. It’s attached to the 8 Speed Steptronic, which together with this epic engine makes for an awesome driving experience, wait to see on the driven. The X-Drive system is of course rear biased, and the car comes standard with the M Sport differential. There is variable sports steering but… well I’ll get to that later.
But will the package be enough to battle the likes of the C43 and Audi S4? Today we explore:
- Origins in New Class and 02 Series w/ Wilhelm Hofmeister
- E21, E30, E36, E46, E90, F30,
- The new G20
- B58 engine
- BMW M changes within the M340i
- Exterior details of new 3 Series
- Other spec and wheels
- Interior review
- Exhaust Sound

A damned impressive thing for a daily driver this M340i. Don’t like the name much, but in love with the engine. Shame about that steering, but it doesn’t detract from an overall awesome package.
But the M3... that’s what I really want to experience, especially the Xdrive variant! 😈 Soon.
I don’t think you sold why the 3 series interior is better than the c class? Yes its more robust and well built and you can change a few things here and there but via your own admission the steering wheel is poor which is actually the main feature of an interior, the numbered buttons are pointless, the digital display is not as good as the mbux system and although a jump up from old in my humble opinion it has nothing on the c class, which has a better design, better OS and better steering wheel
Really love your reviews they are always informative and intuitive. And also that you give credit where it’s due and criticism when deserve. I work at a BMW dealership and I had time my GM to check you out. That’s saying a lot. Anytime your in Montreal don’t be shy to pass by 😉 👊🏿

Yes the G80 with X-drive will be mind blowing fast in straight lines!
I've been driving an M340i for about 9 months now and i love it. Perfect blend of fun and practicality.
I’ve had mine 5 months now and loving it too.
Tell Raz bow to Activate 360cam 😂
@@rankzwazhere I think that car might not have it. I think you need Parking Assistant plus!
Im actually saving up to buy this car,but I have a question...
Hows the reliability?
I chose to not listen to the internet when it comes to bmw reliability, and instead, ask actual owners.
Im assuming,if there are any bigger flaws with it,it'd be the electronics, right?
Cheers.
@@chubz01 Hi Goran, I've not had any issues with the car at all. The is the first new car I've had without any issues requiring it to go back to the dealer within the first few months. My last car was a high-spec Audi Q7 and get frustrated with negative reviews about the BMW virtual cockpit. If you spec the Head-up Display, I think the BMW solution is far better. The HUD on the BMW is next level and has most of the information you need regularly and complemented with the additional info found on the VC and centre screen. The car really is fantastic, lots of fun and power when you want it, but stick it in comfort and it's virtually as good as the Q7. The assisted driving works really well too. Mine is a Touring btw.
I know the 1-8 buttons look antiquated and bad but they are super useful. In a car lots of functions are often hidden behind menus that different owners will want quick access to. For example you can set one to immediately navigate you home. Another can be set to bring you immediately to sport displays. You can set them for buttons to change display, HUD, or audio system settings. IMO they are some of the most useful parts on bmws interior.
Most people don't know that tho and think it's useless. I think if the OS would give it a hint then more people would utilise it
Agreed
For real. I use it everyday 😂
Agreed. I have an M140i and I use those buttons all of the time.
I applaud BMW for keeping buttons and the idrive wheel. I hate touchscreens in a car. My car has the touchscreen function but I never use it...the finger prints drive me up the wall!
Even though I’m driving an old F34, still using those number buttons as shortcuts
This 340i looks prettier than the M440i
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
much more
Agreed. But only with M Sport applied
exactly
3 series in general looks nicer than the 4 series
One thing I love about this BMW, it does not feel like you are buying an inferior car to, say the 5 series, 7 series and 8 series. It just feels like you are buying a smaller car. And for some of us who love smaller cars, this is awesome
Every time I watch these videos I am amazed by the effects. Super realistic! How are they done? Very impressive and they add so much to what could be just ‘another UA-cam car video’
Lots of time in photoshop!
@@RemoveBeforeRace much respect! Very original.
very easy
without photoshop without some profesional edition just change pic with stand camera and put efect light just to change a pic... too fucking easy, anything photoshop make i do with small programs like photofiltre :D 200 mega program or more les i think but is easy to create efects dont need to have it just create anything u want
Raz has an account with Industrial Light & Magic.
3D view: press the physical button “P with 3 beacons” that’s the PDC button. Tilt iDrive controller to the left and select 3D view..
Worked like this in the F30 as well. Seems intuitive imo
I love the fact this car has buttons, yes buttons! No over sized screen with menus galore taking 4 swipes to change radio station. Oh and the 375 bhp B58 engine is pretty cool too.
The buttons have capacity preview and are EXTREMELY useful. The are really useful and I agree that it doesn't matter what they "look like".
About shortcut numbers. BMW are one of the few car makers that make actual physical buttons for climate and radio. They may look outdated but you can feel them. * cough, cough * Looking at you Audi

Dude the quality and editing of your videos is just amazing! Keep up the good work ;)
Such a good looking car!Why didn’t they go for this car’s front end for the new M3?! The front end of new M3 looks hideous to say the least!!
I imagine they will fix it in short order. It took Audi several attempts until they were able to get their massive grill to look better.
I think it looks avearage. Had one for 2 days drives great, infotaintment is well useless. When i walked in to garage i would go its ok but not wow look at what could be my new car. Seriously the main reason not to buy one is infotainment would get negative 5 from me
Something that helps reduce the numbness of the steering is to remove run flat tyres and put better springs on. The steering is still numb, but you can feel the road through the chassis and you can use that to compensate.
Where's the E36 in the intro!

Amazing review, I love how you showcased the m340i through the history of the 3 series
The detail to detail point explaining is why i love this channel 😁
Great review as always! Interesting to hear your view that the shortcut buttons have no place in a modern car. I’ve had numerous BMWs and use these regularly so would miss them if they were gone.
Had a hard time trying to activate the surround view in my car as well 😂 later figured that you need to press the “automated parking” button below the “surround cameras” button, which is very counterintuitive. Overall this car has been a dream. Fantastic daily driver with the right amount of fun.
Ahhh.. that’s dumb 😅🤦🏻♂️

The camera button is actually called “panorama view” for creeping out of the alley, but P is actually for activating the camera mode. As you see in this BMW video ua-cam.com/video/RziW6FPfLGQ/v-deo.html
This is the firs time i have seen one of your reviews. It's well made without any annoying nonsense.
BMW built the G20 so well because they knew all along that they were going to fck up the G80
😁😁😁
You are correct this is the m car not that poopoo garbish..
Car reviewers and their “steering feel.” Glad I’m pleb enough for this car to feel as brilliant to me as it does. I find nothing wrong with it.
You probably never drove the e90. Going from the E to F and G was like going from champagne to rotten cheese when it come to steering. You don't really know what you miss unless u had it before. That said, I doubt we would ever get back hydraulic steering.
first of all i want to say i love your videos and reviews your so neutral because of you i started to love amgs as a M fan and driver thank you raz for your videos and please keep doin this :)
This spec is AMAZING also your channel is...keep up the great work
Yo Just wanted to say how important you are to the Supper car world. It is because of you I bought my dream car. The AMG GT50. Your reviews are honest and informative. Word up to you and your team. Look forward to everything you do.
Definitely a high quality review. Worthy of a like and even a subscribe! Done and done.
Those shortcuts buttons are ingenious and super useful. I hope they don't get rid of them anytime soon. They just need to spruce them up a bit so they don't look as dated but definitely should keep them there.
I agree I love them, and I hope they don’t go Tesla and take out all their buttons
Great review , agree with everything you have said except the shortcut buttons, they are really useful. Especially as manufacturers are slowly getting rid of physical buttons, it’s such a pain when you have to go through the menus to sometimes do something really basic.
First time viewer and I'm super impressed ! Love your graphics !
The best review for the M340i I've ever seen. Loved the terrific shots of the older 3-Series cars. I have a 2020 340i, rear wheel drive that's awesome. Power, handling, electronics, and interior are great. I strongly recommend the adaptive suspension, forget the annoying lane change assist. I switched to a set of non-runflat tires for a big improvement. Why is BMW so wedded to heavy, harsh riding run flats?
I think you do the best car reviews in terms of visual production and really giving us viewers a good visual of what you are talking about. You are also extremely knowledgeable. I don’t usually comment on vids but i just had to here. I wish you more success brotha you deserve it.
First review I’ve watched from RBR, great 👍
Really good video; lots of topics discussed that other reviewers didn’t mention. Thanks!
Interior is simple subtle and beautiful
Behind the scenes fact: This was filmed before the last lockdown! It was actually a heat wave during these days. 🤣

Had one of these for a courtesy car for when my m2 was in the stealers & I must say it more than impressed me🔥
This is slowly becoming my favourite 3 Series of all time.
Great video 🙏🏽🔥🔥
A video that told the truth telling me the good, the bad and the ugly. You really managed to convince me on the interior because you justified why it was better. Other videos just say the 3 series is the best and don't really explain. Thanks for the great review👍👍
Refreshingly in-depth breakdown
Great content!
I really love this channel's objectivity
This is my dream car! One day i will buy one of these!
This is the perfect grill, bmw should have stayed with this design.
It did, hence why you're looking at it. So the M3 and M4 have bigger grills. So what.
Agreed
This grill was grilled when first unveiled a few years ago, because it's a one piece grill now.. and now everyone loves it. same cycle every time. The grill on the new m3/m4 suits the aggressive personality of the car, and I imagine its looks beastly and menacing when seen in the metal
Yes this car with a wide body perfect
Amazing production of this video. Congratulations on a job well done.
I closed on one two days ago, and collecting it next week! I'm super excited to get my hands on it, for me - it is an amazing choice for a daily driver that ticks a lot of boxes not just performance but practicality and tech, it's truly an amazing car

I don't like modern BMWs but any video you do is so interesting and well-researched that I'll watch. You could probably do a review of a lawnmower and I'd watch.
the graphics in this video are fantastic!
I’m still waiting for a video of you driving the m4 competition.
The old school NBA theme is used here around beginning lol
Loved that theme!! 😍😍
The regular camera button shows you the most relevant camera and the park assist button shows you the 360.
What a lineage, all 3 series been amaze-balls
If i didn't lean towards wanting an SUV (live in Canada) I'd have got this. I have an X3 M40i and it's brilliant. Same engine I believe. Perfect blend of everything!
so you tank every 3 days.
This is my daily car, absolutely unbelievable car!
Lmk when you want to sell it
Correct choice
What neat editing of all the models man! 👍🏻
Always enjoy watching your videos. Very well done. I have the the M340xi for a year now and I find your comments on the car are spot on. What this version of the BMW shines to me is definitely the engine, the quality of the interior (mine has the Merino leather interior), and the adaptive suspension. I can't agree more with you that the steering is so numb that makes this car a lot less enjoyable to drive. I think partly this is due to the fact that the steering wheel is so unnecessarily thick. The ride height makes it like an SUV too and I dropped mine with a set of AC springs and that solved the issue. The ride is just like stock after the drop which proves that the adaptive suspension works well with aftermarket springs too. That is not the case for the previous generation.
It is very comparable with x3m40. Lots of luxury and comfort but lacks sportivity for those who ate looking for It.
Must be the only review I've seen where the reviewer was underwhelmed with the performance. This car is a rocket, 0-60 in something like 3.7 seconds. great review
@Chris M True. But that new car smell! Plus the upgrades. A hard sell.
He did say he had drove a tycan turbo s with like 760hp only a few minutes before this review.
@@PedroTRamos1 indeed
This car does not do 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. That would be faster than an M class which this car is not.
@@benquinones45 This car has timed 0-60 in around 3.7 seconds in quite a few reviews. I had a quick look and I've found 2 videos on youtube where they timed 3.8 seconds. There are more videos. BMW have low balled the reported performance of the m340i xdrive because it's much cheaper than an M3/M4 and the performance in certain areas is close to them- they dont want to cannibalize their owns sales.
I liked the historic models at the beginning, but what happened to the E36?
Im beginning to like his videos, well done Raz 👏
You should try the steering in Sport Mode It feels a bit stiff but you may find it gets rid of the vagueness of the steering in Confort Mode, especially at highway speeds
You missed the E36 at the beginning.
Oh poo 😂
E36 is a legend
3:40 have you said that V8 in M3 e90/92 was turbo? It was naturally aspirated engine
Superb review with some great graphics and enjoyed the history lesson at the beginning. Best in class review, the M4 of reviews versus Achilles who is also excellent but perhaps 330i ish.
I personally like the numbered buttons for the specific reason that it gives a nod to previous versions of the car, and in some way I can't explain, it kind of adds to the sportiness of the vehicle.
Had an M140i xdrive coming from a Gti Clubsport and wasn't really impressed by the steering, no real feel or confidence for the front axle, with time I got used to it and really liked the ratio. Went for an M2 and absolutely different league in terms of steering feel, pretty much perfect for me
This is what everyone says!
Kevin, curious if you drove the m340i. If you did, how does it compare to m140i and the m2?
@@koreanational Yes I got to drive the m340i shortly, steering feel was similar but body control was a lot better than the m140i. Far superior damping and comfort to the M2, but not as involving in any way. I think this video really sums it up incredibly well. Also the comparison the C43
@@kevinetz5 ur m2c or og m2? I just sold my m340i for same reasons. Unfortunately I realized It is more a luxury and big sedan than a performance car. I used to drive my Gti and got to that conclusion. The gti has even more steering feedback and suspension feel than m340i and somewhat many times more fun. So i am looking for a m2c and should get one soon.
@@audiophilemetallian Regular good old M2, mainly for the sound and for budget reasons. You are far more limited in what you can get out of the m2 competition exhaust legally in Europe. The OG M2 has its flaws for sure, but the pros outweigh them for me by far
My RWD M240i had the same numb rubber band feeling steering. Really made me miss my E90 335i hydraulic setup.

Fun fact for you BMW Fanboys about the "Hofmeister kink": this has a double meaning in German. A Hofmeister in German translates as steward [of an estate] and kink in German also means to make a curtsey. So it is not only just a kink designed by Wilhelm Hofmeister but it also resembles a steward (Hofmeister) making a curtsey (kink).
17:34 i am really happy that they didn't get rid of these and hope they never will. Being able to program them to your liking makes them very useful. I can oneclick to any menu i prefer which is great. I use these everytime i get in my bmw.
I'm 2500 miles in. Glad you had Sport Individual with Comfort Steering and DSC in TRACTION. My preferred setup by far for grip based fun. Also thanks for discussing the settings - too many don't and yet they report on the ride and handling for example. Cars are so customisable these days. I choose Adaptive rather than comfort but that's maybe 1 in 10 drives.
