Personally love the home video, reminds me of the good old days man
Get a room
Home video style is great and allows for more candid conversations. Years ago he did one about a warehouse full of cars that were going up for auction including a ton of rare/beautiful e38s. Loved that quiet chat among car people style.
Why has car journalism changed over the years, we used to get wayyy more cracking content… i guess it mirrors the car industry and general attitudes
100% Great comment.
The reason for the home video was probably a subtle 🖕 to BMW because he can't test the car properly rather than something cool
Love the stripped down presentation. No gimmicks, no scripts just a knowledgeable reviewer driving a car and breaking down its pluses and minuses.
I feel the quality of modern cars has significantly decreased. Like the home movie though!! More!!! 🕶 Great having you back on our screens. Best car journalist out there.
That's obviously not true.
no kidding this m5 is dead
More movies indeed. The look of that interior makes me think "hot hatch" more than "high performance luxury saloon".
The fact that they got it over 2.5 tons means they were either ultra lazy with engineering effort, or very stingy on better alloys for the heavy bits.
Insanity to be 250 kg over a roomier Tesla Plaid. The M5 controls aren't quite there anymore, so less to complain about the Tesla in a versus. That's a much cheaper car now, with cheaper running, etc. Just, it's an EV and you should probably not park it near a house let alone indoors.
@@ChrisPatrick-q6khe’s got rose colored glasses for sure. Old cars are hot garbage. New cars can be annoying with some of the nannies they have to have but the quality is light years ahead
@@Cloxxki uhh the panamera turbo S hybrid weighs the same as this.... and costs 250k usd
I find myself looking at this car the same way my dog looks at a piece of broccoli
Yeah people are saying it's like the last M3, where people started to like it. But I just don't see it with this. It actually reminds me of a Mercedes, especially from behind. BMWs used to be distinct.. This seems like they tried too hard, and it's also obese. Idc what tech you throw in it, 5300lbs is 5300lbs lol.
Nailed it, pal! On the head!! 👏🏼👏🏼🤣
@@GregK2 Best comment ever 🤣
That gave me a chuckle. I once gave my dog a quarter of the cheese burger I was eating. Next time I looked up from the sofa only a piece of lettuce remained.
The problem isn't so much the car itself it's the trend/direction that it continues on and where that is leading to. And the thing is we already have a car that appears to be the end of this 'trend' and it's the Model S (actually probably X) plaid..is that what we want an M5 to be in another generation or 2 time because that's where it's heading...
Modern BMWs look like Lego-models of an actual BMW
True. Kinda looks like a Merc CLA butt?
And a cheap Lego model at that.
@shaunmccormack6980 that's what I thought, I don't hate it but looks very similar to the Mercedes rear end
It’s the design throughout the car industry, the bubble looking cars are out thank f**k
My old 02 330ci had a better build
interior was way better
I forgot it was a home movie until Harris apologized for it, bro I'd watch any format of Harris with cars. No question.
First M5 I've never wanted.
Same top be said for the Mercedes C63s
They seem to have lost the ultimate driving machine whilst moving to the ultimate technological machine. The germans have added LED war alongside the power war and lost then plot a bit.
yep. There was a time I'd have considered buying an M5. But it is massive and weighs almost 2.5 tonnes. And Chris is comparing it to a Bentley FFS. In Australia it costs more than quarter million dollars. Does anyone actually buy these?
Another M5 I can’t afford !
@@zakelwe But they're not the "ultimate technological machine". I can walk up to my five year old EV with my phone in my pocket and all doors and boot will be unlocked, and with this piece of shit I have to unlock the drivers door and then walk around? It's a joke. These cars remind me of the early smartphones, before the iPhone came along, except that somehow they've managed to develop something worse years later.
These BMW dashes will age like milk.

@@ShowMeWhatINeedToKnowit’s really quite good when you get used to it. Much more overwhelming than older iDrives no doubt. I hated it at first. Regardless, I hate the stupid tablet style anyways.

Chris's opinion is the only one I care about when looking at cars.... new and old. Absolute legend.
The fact BMW tell you you can't track an M offering pretty much says it all. Love having you back, cheers to you and your son
Plenty of other car journalists have tracked them and on BMW’s dime as well.

@@Squashed8Ball to me, there are only 3 motoring journos worth my extremely limited and valuable time, Chris H in his wild unconstrained version, Henry Catchpole and Jason Camisa. They have driving/analysis skills, honesty, dexterity of the language and a capacity to understand vehicles WELL above the rest...they are the thoroughbreads of their trade. The fact you can't even tell them apart from "other car journalists" and aren't even concerned as to why bmw track-blocked Chris speaks for itself🤣
@ Aww Im flattered! You honour me by spending so much of extremely valuable time writing such a short sighted and long winded paragraph defending your attack on a car’s track potential simply based upon an emotional response with zero evidence. What a lunch room legend. PS Putting Jason Cammisa (at least spell his name correctly) in Chris Harris’ league, especially vis a vis driving capabilities gave me a good belly laugh. Thanks for that.
My conclusion is I think this shows us just how much trouble the modern car industry is really in....
What isn't in trouble these days...
If you look, there are plenty of cars and manufacturers with beautiful cars and performance to match.

@@gazman9468 In terms of cars out today, the Lucid Air and the Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance scratch that itch (and the Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio but Stellantis is a dumpster fire). That being said though, they both have their flaws and if the question is "I want a manual transmission, ICE engine super sports sedan." then you're right, the market doesn't exist. 111k for a m car with keyless on only 2 doors, a petrol flap that is already falling off, seats that look like they've done 80k already, oh and it comes on a full set of hankooks. Cars are now ridiculously expensive but corners are being cut everywhere
I was honestly surprised by the Hankooks. Not bad tyres but hardly what I expected to see as factory-fitted.
Keyless on two doors? Jesus christ, I haven’t heard of that in my entire life.
Brother put 14,000 buttons on the steering wheel, take all the buttons away from the dash, add four more screens, and then cut corners. Gonna charge you for a seat heater they already have installed
Exactly why no one should buy a new car these days. They're all built using the cheapest materials but the asking price is astronomical.

Not sure about the neoprene seats. My E39 cabin is such a nice place to be, even with 230,000 miles on the clock. At night the dials can be dimmed to almost nothing, enabling you to concentrate on driving without the distraction of a fun fair in your car.
Just found myself shaking my head throughout the whole video

The depreciation from new on these cars is going to be absolutely horrendous.
Well yes, that's life with a new car. Unless it's something that the market as a whole is fighting for, depreciation is going to happen in a big way.
Then it’s going to be a bargain for someone who wants one in 3 years’ time.

Yep, its bad.
I like the Star Trek "red alert" feature!
Agree… it’s terrible.
Mercedes has the edge… you pay all that money for a cheap looking interior.. they haven’t market tested this… and this isn’t even the CS version
And the basic entry level model is even worse. At BmW someone got drunk… 😅

obviously Chris and Sabine Schmitz, was the dream combination but 'twas not to be - sadly.
@@MrVorpalsword RIP Sabine. there's like a mental .gif in my head of her yelling in that van on the ring.
I don’t get why so many manufacturers think the proper way to install touch screens and dashes is to go for the “Scabbed on a pair of tablets” look. How cool would the M5 dash look with a more standard BMW binnacle with the gauge screen and the center screen integrated into the dash? Instead so many new cars look like pieced together bits from the second hand electronics shop.
I’ve been preaching that since these new “lci” and new models came with it… it looks so cheap and out of taste design! Now every brand is doing it…
They saw Mercedes doing it and thought that they could do the same… but bmw design doesn’t align with that style… 3/4 series and m3/m4s lci are the worst, pretty much they just slapped screens on the old dashboard… I’m pretty sure they save a lot of money doing that but looks bad… at least they could do a dashboard lip over the screens
valid opinion. 👍
I prefer this to the separated gauge and center screen which the predecessor had. This looks cleaner and BMW’s implementation with straight edges and corners looks much better than the rounded & shaped corners Mercedes and Audi use
it's money - screens are piss-cheap, and they can load in content.
The interior as a whole has the feel of a gaming hall, including fake engine noises and the atrocious looking fake leather. Those digital screens are an abomination 😵
I wish I could attach a photo of the cockpit on my F10 M5 at night. It looks 100x better. So much more understated and well thought through.
I test drove one about a month ago and was shocked at the cost cutting in the interior,I’ll keep my X5M for now and replace it with another of the same in the last year of the current generation. Chris was being very diplomatic about the whole interior being plastic and cheap leather seats. Even the M1 and M2 buttons are now cheap feeling plastic not the little metal paddles they used to be.
The leather in the new M5 doesn't even smell like leather, somehow. You are definitely right about it feeling cheap.
I'd way rather have my M2 CS manual cabin, despite it being "outdated". It has great tactile feedback, everything is where it should be, oh and it's a good looking car, unlike all these new M-cars.
Cutting corners everywhere because they think we are schmucks that won’t notice.
Same goes for the Cayenne mate. I have a pre-facelift Turbo S E-hybrid Coupe and I was looking at the new gen ones lately. Amazed by the cost cutting measure they’ve taken. Even the seat controls when from chrome to black plastic, uck! Keep the existing, I’m gonna use mine for a while.
Booo SUVs booo ;)
Also had 24 hours in one. I've had 5 x M5's an M6 and M8. This was great but the interior was woeful compared to my 22 X5

Totally agree . The magic has long gone
Sadly, you're right
I agree 100%
I hated all BMWs before 2018. I think tastes are different, buddy. 🤔😉
Agree. What brand did you switch to?
EU car regulators need to undertake a review of the current state of play - if cutting emissions year on year means 500kg of additional weight, and additional manufacturing- are we really cutting emissions here?
Was reading an interesting article talking about how tyres are by far the worst pollutant from cars - 2000 times worse than exhaust emissions in terms of particle pollution. As you mentioned the additional weight of hybrid systems only exacerbates the issue.
That's because a hybrid drivetrain is a dead end in terms of technology. Either go all electric or go very mild hybrid. Plug-in hybrids are pointless.
GR86 is no longer sold in EU because... it's too light. If it was heavier, it would pass the minimum consumption and/or emissions numbers, whatever they may be. Silly.
Right and people complain about the state of roads today.. no wonder when cars are increasingly heavy..
@@Rebasepoiss Eh? A series hybrid (electrically driven with a range-extender) is capable of being both lighter than an EV and more energy efficient than a pure combustion vehicle, just so long as the battery is kept relatively small. The problem is these manufacturers keep putting humungous batteries in these cars and relying on those to supply most of the energy, when even the best electric car batteries _suck_ at storing the amount of energy required for long trips relative to the added weight.
The VW XL1, Honda Insight. and Toyota Prius all either used or tiny and efficient engines, fuel tanks, small batteries, and electric motors to achieve immense efficiency. Even more importantly, they were and are reasonably-sized, slippery vehicles instead of brick-shaped barges.
Plug-in hybrids _are_ an awkward solution (though being able to top up from the mains is pretty useful for overnight charging), but to say hybrids in general are a dead end is just plain wrong. If anything, they've been the answer all along. They're just being done wrong.
Imagine the repair bills for this car in years to come, complety bonkers. Chris Harris your the best
Then it’s not for you

It looks absolutely gigantic. Also, I’m not sure “get out of the way” looks is what an M5 should do - it used to be iron fist in a velvet glove, but this one looks like an iron hammer dressed in a mallet and then garnished with snow plough and middle finger. Hate the stupid widescreen dash and the budget material choices. It’s Bowers & Wilkins, rather than B+O, so that’s good. What’s even better is the fabulous back catalogue of M5s, which look more appealing every day.

My dad and uncle are both family business owners, and as someone born in the mid-’90s, I practically grew up surrounded by these types of cars. They would buy a new sports or luxury car every one or two years, so brands like BMW M, AMG, and Audi RS were a regular part of my childhood. Now, as an adult, I still find it hard to understand why so many people are so deeply attached to or amazed by these high performance models.
They were the heavily marketed signs of success! I grew up with the adoration too. Now I think they’re a bit daft especially this modern breed of them.

My car comes with an infinitely variable driving mode. From best economy to best performance. It has only two input devices, an accelerator pedal and a gear leaver. Also it has a touch screen emulator. It's made with buttons, switches and dials. It's more sophisticated than the old touch screen by providing a 3d interface that you can navigate by feel so you can keep your eyes on the road. Really advanced stuff

What a great and honest day to day review!! Everyone who says it’s too heavy or too slow is not the average buyer of this car! The reason why this thing regenerates this good is because it’s done by a 4.4L V8 instead of a 1.5L 3 cilinder or 2.0L 4 cilinder 😅

Chris the problem with BMW is, it's not BMW anymore. You can't look at the new m5 and expect to be as good as the old ones because the people that are in charge are just focus on one simple thing. How can i address this car to most customers instead to the genuine customers.
Either you appeal to real drivers or to people that just drive cars....
This happens a lot to brands, when they grow so big the only thing that matters are how can i get even bigger instead of keeping the vision and the values in check of what they once were even if that means slow the progress, or the achievement.
If i was in BMW i would reconsider my position, simply because what once had inspired me, no longer exists. And notice that nowadays, you are force to "grow on it". When you look to the E39 or E46 or whatever M car, you can really see the simplicity behind it. You just love it! You don't need to think about either you love it or hate it...
Why trying to change something if it will become uglier ? Simplicity will always be more beautiful than whatever non-sense and mixed up lines they are trying to use just to be different. They are not different, they becoming the nightmare you and I know it's true.!!

You're right Chris, it's an M7! My last daily was a G11 740i. Fab car but felt just too big on uk roads at only 2.5" bigger than this. I bought an F90 M5, love it. The M sport guys were given the new 5 series and had to make an M5 Hybrid and this is what we have ended up with, like it or not, they had no choice.
Thanks Chris, straight to the point as always. It once again confirms: buy older cars. BMW always had one over companies like Audi if you look at interior quality. Bought a B9 RS4 in 2022, selling now and moving back to older 'Bayern'. Who cares about hybrid complex engines. Once they break it's even more complex to fix, and no one wants a 2.5 ton M5.

M2 owner here. Frankly the m5 really pushes me towards RS6 for what seems the last great touring. Would love to hear your thoughts on the RS6 Perf.
@@aeonokwap you have chris harris in the vid you're commenting under telling you the m5 is a no brainer buy over the RS6....
I saw this car at the Classic Car Show at the NEC at it was huge and quite imposing and probably more so as it was surrounded by older classic cars. Thanks Chris for your straightforward and insightful opinions.
This car looks MASSIVE sitting parked up. It's overhanging the white parking bay painted lines by absolutely miles. And as many others have already said, that dusty plasticky interior is terrible.
04:12 - "It's got the B&O Hifi".... It's Bowers & Wilkins, not Bang & Olufsen. (sorry)
I agree,it's stupid huge.
I recently visited hospital and I struggled to park my W204 C Class saloon, could barely get out the door. I don’t know how people live with cars this big?! In many scenarios they are literally unparkable (not a word). Imagine taking this down a very tight country road. No thanks!
@@rare6499 i got a small car ( Twingo RS ) & love it because i can sneak in everywhere in cities and have fun on twisted roads & i didn't spend much on it since i bought it . I can't stand those Big Cars because they are not practical at all , save with SUV's of course
Sure it's faster, more comfortable, handles better etc... but I'd still take a mint E39 M5 over this any day.
doesn't handle better; this is a straight line missile. handles like a tank.
Same. Nothing about that thing appeals to me at all.
Agreed but I’ll go E39 Alpina V8
Numbers do not describe smile / mile and joy of driving. Any previous M5 is better.
Absolutely agree. You don’t need 800bhp to enjoy yourself, just a handsome car with a nice engine and some involvement
I could listen to you talk about anything, mate. Keep up the great content; you're easily one of the top motor journalists out there, and these home videos are only further proving that. Cheers!
M5s being relatively sleeper was one of the coolest things about them.
"That gets to 70 really quickly!" 😂
I still haven’t seen anything beat the good looks of the *e39 m5*
🤦🏽
The Lucid Air Sapphire is probably the modern rendition of the E39 M5. It’s an incredibly gorgeous car that manages to be both muscular and understated. I know it’s an EV and extremely expensive but if they manage to transfer the driving dynamics and bodywork to a ~80k car then you could have something very special. Even more so, if they can integrate the Ioniq 5 N’s fake gearbox.
It’ll still be a fake steak, but it’ll be a delicious fake steak.
E60 / E61 M5 is good too
I love the 2017-2023 5 series. Looks just like a modernized e39
It must be really hard to make something that expensive look so cheap
Ther is a reason for not letting him driving it on track 😂😂😂😂 he drift it all time😅
Love the honesty from Chris, himself and clarkson are the only two still around, that aren’t afraid of the manufacturers!
And Harry Metcalfe!
When did Clarkson start reviewing cars again ?
@@Makrel94 he didn't
@@BlueHopi144 I know.. I was being facetious.
What honesty? If he was honest, he would have smashed to the ground how this car is a complete rip-off and doesn't even deserve the M5 name!
Despite owning a number BMWs over the years, I can’t remember the last time I lusted for a new one.
M5 CS, M340i.
The sales figures suggest you're in the minority.
The sales figures show most people buy Toyotas. Not sure those are lust-worthy either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@ChrisPatrick-q6kCertain models are attractive for sure, M5 CS for instance as listed in the comment above. The majority of people who buy BMW's nowdays don't actually know that they are buying trashcars. They are unaware of this and they are buying BMW's just for the brand.
Have you looked at an M3? From the front? With your eyes? @@Todestuete
Looks like a taxi from a cartoon. The illuminated grill that you rave about is perfect so people can spot you in traffic, raise their right hand and call you over when they need a ride!
I like the look of it if I’m honest
Chris, I’m not worried about you but I hope your return to this familiar yet fresh direction brings you both financial and spiritual rewards. We’re truly blessed to have you back where you belong. Other motoring journalists, take note - this is how it’s done.
Hi Chris , I’ve just bought a 28k mile BMW M6 grand coupe with every option + exterior full carbon kit in San Marino. blue. B&O sound , hud, lane assist etc for £24,599 inc a 12 month AA warranty . Happy days 😀😀
I didn't have the M6. But I did have the 650 grand coupe. It did 161,000 miles before I traded it for something new. Wonderful car and I miss it everyday.
Only issue I ever had was a head gasket leak at 145,000 miles. The car was a dream to own .
Congratulations!!!
That’s 100% the way to go, silly prices for what 🤔
To me this new 5 series styling looks like an SUV made into a sedan. The lights looks too high and the bumpers too round, while the greenhouse looks like it's sitting on top of an ev chassis. Not a fan. And I agree with Chris, it's too big. IT'S ALSO WAY TOO HEAVY. I think we are now on the downward slope with high performance sedans.
Exhausting, looking at that digital dash. I just want to drive a car, not a computer.
I think the last shape 5 series was brilliant 2017-2023 but lost their way with this one, it just keeps getting bigger and heavier too. The new 5 is the size of an old 7 series and the 3 series is the size of an old 5 series
Last gen was genuinely my favorite shape of the 5 series. Rear is literally BMW perfection
“It’s growing on me”, coincidentally so do warts.
🤣
Cancer does that
Too funny!! 😂😂😂😂
Hahahahaa
You said 'It's got the B&O hifi' (Bang and Olufsen) but that's actually the British 'Bowers & Wilkins'
Perhaps Rolls Royce vs Bugatti? Though, I'd say that B&O use Philips innards, so you pay for the design and the name. B&W are quality; I'd also like to see an auto sound system from Dynaudio or Ruark.
Dynaudio were in vw for a while as an option. Suv's mostly tho I think
@@stopitofffI had a Dynaudio system in my ‘13 Golf R. It was a solid setup.
In the new BMW's all you have to do is hold down the SET button on the steering wheel for a few seconds and it disables all the bonging and warnings. It is one of the much easier and simpler systems to disable. Still not great that it is required but you don't need to use the touchscreen to disable. (G60 owner)
When I click on the necessary buttons to see a car review video with you, I know that I will get besides your intense long-time experience with performance cars a piece of honest authenticity. That's not to be taken for granted these days on social media. The home video format even enhances that feeling, thank you very much for it, highly appreciated.
This was a great format for a review, would love to see more of these on the channel!
What a fine home movie. It's the quality of the information, the content, that is more important, (even though I do appreciate a well filmed video too). I've never yearned for a BMW, and certainly not the recent 'generation' which look glossy rather than classy. Reminds me of chrome bits on top spec Fords a few years ago...
From the USA- first thing I did was put a Dinan exhaust on my M5 when new a couple of years ago, I think I'll keep it.
Not being able to drive it on track is such a disappointment, BMW are moving backwards it seems.
It's ludicrous that one of the most well known British motoring journalists isn't allowed to track the M5.. the car known as being the f@cking Nurburgring Taxi.. one of the things that made it so famous. Total idiocy.
I get the feeling all the pitfalls of this new M5 will show itself on the track, so they’re trying to hide it.
They know it'll break down.....can't take the beating...quality problems..
This is the same company that once used "The Ultimate Driving Machine" as their slogan
@@ShaiyanHossain i feel like it is just BMW UK or a certain dealer or something similar. They don't want their few press cars trashed on the track yet. It is understandable. The wear from trackdriving is immense.
I have a family member who is an engineer for BMW and he helps in design of the direction of BMW these days. He’s been there a long time, seen a lot, has done a lot, but every Xmas when we get together, I give him the business on the direction this car brand is moving.
I know it’s not his fault, and the brass above him and governments are really to blame, but once a proud driving brand has become a Toyota.
I’ve had to luxury to own 8 BMWs in my driving years and the last one that I bought, current car, will be with me for quite sometime so long as nothing extreme happens to it.
After it goes, I will probably look to either the preowned market or a pickup truck, it’s got that bad in my eyes.
Hopefully BMW changes back or at least, finds a happy medium before then. Thanks Chris for a great video.
Hey what's with the needless swipe at Toyota! Lol! Toyotas are honest. The fun ones are truly fun, the functional ones are purely functional and they'll all drive to half a million miles with just oil changes and tyres.
@ it no shot at Toyota as it’s more of a shot at BMW.
@@stevec9704I have left BMWs and now drive Toyotas because they are honest, don’t break down and look better than what new BMWs are trying to be. The person who commented before me is correct. They know what they are. BMW don’t and it’s not the legislation doing it.
@@RasheedKhan-he6xxYou are correct.
@@georgemorley1029for real new toyotas really killing bmw in design. saying this as a former bmw fan
The solution is to stop electing politicians that force people to drive cars they don’t want. Let the car makers make the cars people want, simple.
Yeah, but that isn’t socialism.
@ precisely
Or even allow car manufacturers to make cars which keep them in business. You're going to see a lot of brands (big ones) failing and going bankrupt or being bought out by the Chinese in the near future. While many major brands have crap designers...they're also losing money hand over fist chasing impossible (and poorly researched) political mandates.
@@oskar6661 legislation basically prevents interesting cars being economically and technically viable.
Not sure if politicians force to make ugly cars like current bmw and mb
i like this Chris' Home Movie segments.... btw welcome to the world of the rest of the buyers of this car.... dailying it and not ripping the crap out of it.... i would buy or not buy based off YOUR opinion of it off track than on track tbh.... keep em coming Chris you legend
Sounds like BMW don't want all that mass chucked round a corner on a track. It'd expose just how heavy it is. I just can't get over the front end. Quite homely.
One thing people seem to skip when you look at the weight of this car...is tire wear. I'm not sure about other places in the world, but a car like this with a tire like that is...maybe $900-1200 per tire. At 5300+ lbs...in a 'performance' car, you're going to be paying $4K every 6-8 months for new tires. That is wild.
The front is so big you could think its a SUV :O , I must say I prefer the old interior :O
All we care about is watching Chris slide it around while walking us through the dynamics - Get your sh*t together BMW!!
Anything Chris Harris related is always worth a watch honest and brutal but great to watch
