M340i owner here. I can confirm that this is one of the best models that BMW makes. The B58 is literally perfection.

4.4s 0-100 that BMW “claims” is so damn underrated. I tested it a few times with my Nokian snow tires(not performance winter tires) and got 4.02s with no passenger but full tank of gas.
Yeah, they claim the 5100 pound M760i has only 601 horsepower but a 3.6 0-60
There advertised figures are way less than the engine actually producing at the crank...
My friend got his M5 CS dynoed and it's churning out behemoth 700HP+ (stock) (BMW states 635HP for it)

Why the hell does BMW charge for Apple CarPlay when just about every other car on the market with an infotainment comes with it standard with no subscription? I hate that shit. That makes me not want to buy this car for that very reason. If you’re spending $60k plus you should at least get things like that standard.
Jon Becker the more you spend on a car, the more you get gouged with options. Why does apple charge $200 to go from 128gb to 256gb on a new MacBook? Because they can.

K Clark I find dealers getting harder and harder to negotiate with. They’re all starting to lean towards “this is the price, take it or leave it”. Or “corporate won’t allow us to do that, I really wish I could.”

Pretty soon they'll advertise that the engine is capable of x amount of power. But you'll need to have this certain tune for a year for x amount of money.

Well I trying to get to where it was only temporary. At least with the re-flash it's stays there until you disengage it. So kind of like a subscription service to get the extra power. Where you pay monthly or yearly to keep that extra power.

@@Wallriss Just picked up my 2021 earlier this week. Before getting it, I was upset it wouldn't have the burbles of a 2020.... Once I sat in the drivers seat... IDGAF lol. It still sounds awesome and makes some great sounds.

I am on mile 1,500 of my 2021 M340i and I am loving it. What a fun car to drive and the power is absolutely underreported. I live in Denver so the air is thinner up here but you can still feel the necessary growl when needed. I test drove both the C43 and the M340i before I bought and although the gurgles and pops of the Merc were a little better I made the right choice in purchasing the BMW. Great review guys - definitely know your stuff!
I have the same car and I love it. I had to code the features that remembers what mode you are in when you shut down and the car is a bit quiet but it’s amazing.
I just got a 2021 with only 4k miles. How is yours holding up? Still have it?

Had an F30 335ix with MPPK when I lived in Germany. Loved it! Flooring it at 200 km/h and how that engine would shift lower gear in an instant and rev like a freak and push you back to the seat, jeez i loved that! I’m really happy with my RRS now as its much more suitable for the Scandinavian climate and speed limits , but man, that BMW stole my heart❤️
A few months ago I test drive a CPO 340i 6-speed manual with the ZHP package, and fell in love with it. That car’s inline 6 is so smooth, and fast! Hoping there will still be a few low mileage examples around with a stick in a couple years when I can afford one.
That sounds fantastic from the outside. Sounds so much better than the outgoing M3/M4

My friend has been working at a BMW dealer for years now, and he's been very consistent in his belief that the M340i (both F80 and G20 generations) is among the best, if not the best, all-around cars that BMW makes. The latest 40i motor is clearly past 400/400 HP/TQ at the crank, if not getting close to the 450/450 range...a B58 M40i-powered car is basically running around with the equivalent to a C6 or C7 Corvette V8. It's really nutty performance for a regular production 3-series.

Goes......did you not see how many option the last gen 3 series had. There was like 80 pay for options compared to like 20 now. BMW went full EA in 2012.

Shane Barrett True. Including stupid ones like folding rear seats. My 09 E90 sadly didn’t have that box ticked . They charged extra for AUX as well, a feature than came standard on my 2010 Golf GTI.
The subscription charges haven been rolled back. Received the letter in December 2019

Nice test and car! Always wondered how much you have to push on the accelerator to activate the launch control while following the entire process (sport+ , DSC off, manual gear etc)
I also like the blue/tan (cognac) color combo. It looks both classy and sporty👍
I have a 2018 S4. Love it. Havent driven the C43 or the M340. I really like both of those as well. Would be a REALLY tough choice for me between the C43 or M340. I think I would go C43 because I like the interior a lot better. Their 12 inch display and you can option those awesome AMG Performance seats in it which look amazing.
M2 Competition is basically my dream car right now but based on price in a couple years, this may be what I go after. Interested in other specs of this one now! Great review
Hyundai/Kia has a great lane keep assist.
My 2017 Hyundai i30 does as well and on the Autobahn it can pretty much drive for itself.
Same with my 2019 i20 (and it has Android Auto/Apple Car play as standard).

Nothing beats the driving dynamics of a BMW. M340I for me all day any day. The 0-100 time is actually closer to 3.8 secs as tested in other vids I've seen

@@layne4376 I actually own an M340 xdrive. It’s quick, but the M340i is not 3.8s to 62mph (100kph).

I feel like BMW actually do care about building the 'ultimate driving machine'. They keep a straight six over moving to a 4-cyl, they chose the best automatic transmission on the market, refined the traction control so that it's perfect, rear bias AWD. They just know what driving enthusiasts want.

How does the camera that watches your eyes work if you're wearing sunglasses? Still work or can you not wear them?
I wear them all the time, I guess you can 'cheat' the system, downside is it will not recognize you dosing away as quickly.
It uses IR cameras which can see through sunglasses. Similar to Face ID on iPhone. (Also works in pitch black.)
Chuck Norris you’re not allowed to wear shades, says it in the car manual and your warranty may be void if you do unfortunately

I just test drove the M340 RWD and it made my 2016 340 RWD seem lazy! Very tempting - the ultimate daily driver
Mig Y does the M340 RWD come with bigger rear tires compared to the AWD version?
Or a LR AWD model 3? That's what I've gone for instead, pretty sure it will make this feel lazy too due to the instant torque!
Russell Brown Interesting that you ask. I was shocked to see the M340 RWD came standard with 225 wide 18 in tires on all 4 corners! My car has 255 wide 19 in as the MSport option. I thought the acceleration was traction-limited so it didn't make sense.
ffrrannk I would consider the Model 3 LR or Performance but I was put off by poor build quality, higher insurance rates, and repair issues (see TFL Car's videos regarding the trouble of getting minor damage fixed). But yeah I have to agree the Model 3 is a beast to drive.
Interesting, I guess every choice has its compromises, but the cars being built now do seem pretty good in terms of build quality. Maybe not German good, but still good. Compromises of the BMW would be the running costs, and burning fossil fuel still :)

Love the M340! I drove the M240 for a week or so and fell in love with it! Would love that feeling with the practicality of a sedan. :)
M240i is a much more fun car.
So this is my 7th! BMW, including an M (I refer to that period as my high-maintenance significant other phase) and I have to tell you, this is my favorite one ever. Great review. I'll just differ on a couple of points...for a dedicated BMW driver, we don't want the looks to change much, and we don't want it blinged out. I buy these because they're mostly sleepers. Also the gauges aren't that bad. Just reprogram the center panels for the sport displays if they make you happy :). The interior now feels more high-end over all. But it's ALL about the driver and the drive here. And this car is the perfect poised partner when you need that, and the naughty and racy one when you need that.

The 0-60 is 4.1 with xdrive but it has been tested at 3.9

Thanks for USD direct conversation. However could you specify base price or as tested please. Great review as always. I think the BMW feels smaller and lighter especially when driving aggressively. The other cars can do it but BMW feels like it enjoys it more. I agree the gauge cluster looks like they tried harder to make it different from the competition and ended up with something usable rather than enjoyable to look at.

I know a lot of BMWs have active grills now that will close for aerodynamics (and to warm up the engine faster) but open up if it needs extra cooling

I love the exterior style of the new BMWs. I just really wish that the digital instrument cluster was not standard. What happened to having simple, stylish gauges?

I purchased a brand new 2019 M5 last month and I much prefer its instrument cluster over my husband's 2020 X7.
Designers get very stupid and try to reinvent the wheel every chance they get

For what it is I think it's really good. I've seen people Dyno these @360-380 WHP. Throw a couple tunes at at think you could easily hit 430 WHP.

I’m eager to see a review of the new M550i xDrive. The updated M550i xDrive will have 523 hp and 553 lbs ft of torque up from 456 hp and 480 lbs ft of torque. Those are big gains and the performance should be even better with quicker acceleration times. Can’t wait to see what it can do when it hits North America.
