That being said it always shocks me with the power and handling. It feels like I’m driving a train on the road. I haven’t had the privilege of driving those other two cars but the s4 is an absolutely fantastic contender
I've owned a (pulley swapped/tuned) B8.5 for the last five years and while I'm ready to move on to something else, it's been a great, great car to me. I'd never owned an automatic in my life until this car, and only ended up buying it due to scarcity of proper spec manuals, but the DSG was excellent, and surprised me. The Drive select dampers in my car definitely make the car quite harsh, I'm not sure if the B9 is generally softer, but I was a bit surprised to hear that. Given the move away from manual/DSG to a conventional auto only is another sign that the S4 is more about comfort than anything else though, and I was sad to see it go. Ultimately, for the same price as a new S4, I'm buying an RS3, I'll take the interior size penalty, I'll deal with haldex over true quattro, because it's fast as hell, understated, and sounds incredible. If the S4 is going to keep getting softer it's time they bring the RS4 back to North America, the RS5 Sportback is cool but I just want an excessively fast, boring looking sedan that non car people don't look twice at.
I own a 2020 M340 and work for BMW, so I drive 330’s all day as well. There is a gigantic difference between the two. The 330 is great, but there is a stark difference. Go and open up the M340 on a track or autocross course and you will see, it is beyond phenomenal. Will give many higher end sport cars a run for their money. Apart from that, great review.
Owned all 3. Best of the bunch for finish, driving experience, comfort, fast drive and lazy drive is the BMNW M340i by a nose. Its fuel economy trumps them as well.
I own a 2018 C43 AMG and I smile everytime I put the car into sport plus and listen to the exhaust 😁😁😁 Also with a stage 1 tune this thing is a monster!

@@audiophilemetallian I did but I drove the M340i first. Honestly the M340i is a total beast compared to the 330i. It sounded great too inside although it was piped in. I honestly felt this review was biased.
The one thing I do appreciate about bmws is the back fires. I have a 2017 bmw m240i xdrive with a Dinan high flow mid pipe. It sounds amazing and crackles and pops with every down shift. Inlines can sound great with a little work done on them.
I'd be very tempted by the C43 AMG but I think that fun but silly exhaust note and the harsher ride would grow old as a daily driver. I also never really fell in love with the shape of the current C-class. BMW looks sleeker to me and it's probably slightly faster, more comfortable, and I love the silky smooth straight-6 so the Bimmer would be my choice.
There’s an optional exhaust switch which was on in the video. When the C43 is in comfort mode it’s exhaust note is very quiet without the loud crackle.
I test drove 2020 s5, 2020 m340i and 2020 C43 coupe and frankly all 3 suspension ride similar. Maybe MB tune c43 to be a little softer for 2020. In the end I took 2020 C43 coupe home because its has way better performance than Audi and BMW. C43 feels more like a real sport car. Try it for yourself.
@@user-jf6fs7ko4j As a valet driver, before the world ended, I've actually driven all of these cars several times since my initial comment. I obviously haven't driven them at proper speed but I got a general feel for all of them over bumps and dips and heard the exhaust notes. The Audi felt like the best calm cruiser with its light steering, quiet exhaust, very well damped ride, and smooth drivetrain. It also felt like the highest quality interior although the Merc and BMW are also very high quality. I could see how the Audi would be a bit boring though. The Merc felt the most sporty even driving at like 30 mph. Steering was quick and direct, the ride was stiffer than the others but still very livable as you alluded to, and the exhaust and drivetrain felt way more aggresive than the others. The BMW kinda split the difference between the Audi and Merc on everything except I feel like the BMW had the best steering feel and probably the smoothest engine. I'd probably still lean BMW because it seems like the best balance of the Audi and Merc and I like the looks the best. Anyways, congrats on buying that beast of a Merc! Wish I could afford these cars rn lol
Getting ready to turn in a C43 on a three-year lease and am switching to the Audi S4, having owned A4s in the past. The C43 is a rocket, no doubt, but it really comes down to how much of a charge to you get out of letting that exhaust pop and snap in Sport mode. Also, the steering is better, heavier .. solid. And I had the Coupe with really heavy doors. All that said, the Audi has a classier interior, feels better put together, and you get less attention .. which can be a good or bad thing, depending on your nature. These cars are all so intentionally designed to compete with one another that there is no glaring 'best' choice.
Someone close to me had an older S4... proved to be a really great car! I test drove an AMG C32 long ago. It was definitely faster than my E46 (which I love), but frankly I think I would have taken the Audi. To me the C32's engine really lacked the refinement of the BMW.
what 'attention' do you get with a c43? i had a 63 and one of the things about it is it doesn't visibly stand out from the rest of the mercedes c class lines as it passes by.
@@davec8730 I get your point and the AMG cars aren't exotics or even like driving a 911. But the Audi has a slightly lower profile than the C class AMGs, particularly the 43 or 63 coupe. The AMG is flashier, less conservative, and draws more of a macho, insecure reaction from other rockhead male drivers wanting to pass or challenge you. Or maybe I just became a bigger jerk when I got that car .. always a distinct possibility. Anyway, I ended up buying a Chevy truck instead.
@@ocan1033 i've had both the 911 and the c63. the 911 was the more 'all round' sports supercar, but the c63 more brutal. the 911 was all wheel drive and more sure footed than the standard 911. but on the shabby roads around here the 63 when in 'sport plus' and heavy acceleration went along like skimming a stone over a pond, it touched the road every now and then, which was far from reassuring.
@@davec8730 I used 'sport plus' mode only a handful of times when I had that car. But you can't really put the AMG cars in the same category as a 911 as far as handling goes. I see them more as a kind of muscle car. They handle adequately but aren't going to corner or hold like the Porsche. What does the 911 cost now? Factoring for depreciation and heavy snowfall this year, I'm content with my truck.
Great review, as always, guys. I recently purchased one of these three after testing them. I was downsizing my 2014 Audi S6 and 2017 718 Cayman S into one car (I loved both of the previous two very much, but needed to narrow the garage at the moment). I'm a big BMW fanboy. And, while I chose the 718S over the M4 a few years back, I thought without doubt I'd get an M340i over the C43 and S4 (actually considered an S5 Sportback). After test driving the three, my opinion on all aspects of the cars is very much inline with yours. The 2019 C43 surprised me in a good way so I got it and have not looked back. Keep up the great work w/ the UA-cam Channel! Cheers.
Great comparison. I have a 2018 S4 and love that it does everything well but one of the most under-rated things is that i love the feel of the shifter as opposed to the Merc's rotary dial for the nav screen. Like to rest my hand on something mechanical not computer-like.
Yeah.. I don't think Audi gave these guys the Sport package(Red Calipers) with Sport Suspension, and Rear Torque Vectoring Differential. Along with Dynamic Steering.
Toro 2017 yeah, I expect some good deals over the next few months. Although I’m now looking at the F31 to save some cash. The G20 prices will drop like a stone over the next few years.
Just DoIt Clearly it’s the driver 😉 With the performance pack they are over 360bhp and 4.2 0-60... If it’s a euro 6 version the engine is being strangled. The B58 lump is what BMW are using in the new M3, it’s a single block and good for over 500hp.
@@aiden359 thats wrong. here are the test proven times from 2 different independent german car magazines: c43 amg: 4.7 seconds. m340i: 4.4 seconds. audi s4: 4.8-4.9. so as you can see the bmw is the fastest, after that the c43 amg and the audi is the slowest. also top speed: all these cars are electronically limited to 250kmh. but if u remove the limiter top speeds are as followed: bmw 298 kmh, c43 296 kmh audi s4 285 kmh.
Audi does such a great job on their interiors, tech and build quality. Mercedes has needed to step up their quality (and quality control) for a while now. That being said, those AMG cars are exciting and I would really like to drive one of the new C43 or C63 variants.

TFL has been disappointing me lately. I'd give honorable mentions to Everyday Driver and Driven. But do check out Track aTime TV. That guy is amazing.
What BMW and Mercedes have done is ingenious if you think about it. They are taking their middle child models and converting them to their high end performance models. C450 is now the C43 AMG. BMW 340 is now the M340. Not true M and AMGs but tuned by them, and performance is a huge step up from the original middle child models. Plus you have AWD, so it’s a better everyday car and better pull off the line. I have an 18 C43. Doesn’t have the power boost the 19 has, but you put that thing in sport + mode, and it flys. Huge difference from a C300.
I investigated and drove all three. S4:fast, smooth, great handling, good ride, MMI is awesome, nice interior. BMW340i: very fast, smooth ride, steering a little num, drive is the best.. Forget the merc C43: noisey, loud tires, harsh ride, Nav is awkward, and dealer was inflexible on an already highest price. I can't decide between the S4&M340.
Love the review! I a big Audi fan, but I just recently went with a BMW 330i. What I first noticed about the car was the sound of the engine, it has a mature noise. Looking at these cars and if money wasn’t an issue, I’d buy the Audi S4. They’re innovation is unbeatable, I absolutely love the Audi cockpit which is where they dominate. Plus I would like a car with very dynamic driving modes such as the AWD Quattro.

I have an Audi A6 3.0 TDI and it is such a smooth car. It is a perfect daily. I would have gotten an S4 if I didn't already have an A6.
B.C. it is incredible that the rs3 is comparable in price to the s4, it’s one hell of a car for the money, you will definitely enjoy it!
M340i smokes it for power and handling.
Exactly right. The difference between the 330i and the 340i is huge and to not notice that is just crazy.
That C43 man... one day I will have one.
I love the Mercedes amg cars. They sound sooo good. Wether it’s a v6 or v8, they both sound amazing. Love those pops and bangs
Owned all 3. Best of the bunch for finish, driving experience, comfort, fast drive and lazy drive is the BMNW M340i by a nose. Its fuel economy trumps them as well.
As much as I absolutely adore the M340i, I have to give it to Mercedes for that sound, that C43 just sounds absolutely AMG-ish mental.
Nope, doesn't sound like an amg. Sounds like a muffled v6 with silly pops. The NA version of the engine sounds better

Ashok teja yes
That is why I asked
330i g20 is 2.0 turbo 4 cilinder
M340 turbo 6 cilinder
Dissapointed how the m340i exhaust crackles weren’t shown or talked about in sport plus, they are quite theatrical
Man said there is not much of a difference between the 330 and M340. Greatest cap of 2020. I've driven both, its night and day.
Please do the 2018/2019 S5 coupe and direct rivals.
If you're in the states Ill lend you mine!
With the valves closed it feels like a C300. It’s a great car, I absolutely love it.
im very big fan of MERCEDES for years but now in this class im agree with you
I test drove 2020 s5, 2020 m340i and 2020 C43 coupe and frankly all 3 suspension ride similar.
I just got a 2019 c43 a few months ago and mannnn you don’t really need to worry about music in the car with that amg exhaust
Cheers.
One of the best intros ever. Laughed my ass off! Bravo!
I have the 2019 c43 and i love it, that little smile you guys had on the upshift, i have it every day. I love it.

Gonna go for the BMW... the C43 sounds cool - but that’s about it!
You will get the most discounts and the best price by a lot with the BMW M340.
Toro 2017 yeah, I expect some good deals over the next few months. Although I’m now looking at the F31 to save some cash. The G20 prices will drop like a stone over the next few years.
Just DoIt disagree, I like my boring F31 320d, does everything I need. Stick a B58 in there with a performance pack and happy days!
Just DoIt Clearly it’s the driver 😉 With the performance pack they are over 360bhp and 4.2 0-60... If it’s a euro 6 version the engine is being strangled. The B58 lump is what BMW are using in the new M3, it’s a single block and good for over 500hp.
Just DoIt yeah the new g20 look like a good car, the 330 is meant to pull well for a 4 cylinder...

A leader drives the BMW. Pure German masterpiece.

Plus I would like a car with very dynamic driving modes such as the AWD Quattro.
