The majority of cacti are very slow growing during the first years of life as the plants primary aim is to grow a bigger root network, to not only better anchor the plant into the ground, but to acquire water more easily. This is why very small seedlings won't survive if they're exposed to a manner of normal dormancy where water is withheld for very long periods in the winter. They lose the few roots they have and tend to dry up.
At some point between 2 -5 years old, growth increases and then reaches a plateau, then it depends on the quality of environmental conditions they experience. Most desert cacti grow in stable steps of about 1-3cm a year, the sub tropicals may grow about about an inch up to 3. Tropicals like Pereskia, Eriocereus, and some species of Opuntia more growth again. Fero's and Echinocactus barrels though seem to be different.
These seem to grow faster when they are small, and then they gradually slow down as they age. Why I don't know. This is opposite to most other cacti and there seems to be no explanation behind it. My largest Fero barrel is about 6 inches tall and 5 wide, and still seems a long way off from flowering given the longterm growth rate. It grows a new set of aereoles and spines from each of the stem segments annually, that's all.
Fero's and Echinocactus barrels are true desert dwellers and cacti in they're own right. No image of the Mexican desert is complete without them, especially in flower:- when they add a spectacular carnival of colour of the surrounding landscapes. If these are certain Fero's, you should know by next year, as the classic characteristics of they're large aereoles and coloured spines begin to emerge. Thanks again. J.

They re so gorgeous but i think their nature is savage the ones in the black pot. Lynn , my brown haworthia cooperi had too much sun, thats why its brown, i water it and i put it in side my house and it starts ro producing green leaves🤩🤗🤗🤗🤗
So happy your Haworthia is recovering well and producing green leaves, thats such a relief :-D thanks so much Roberto for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, Sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic weekend ahead XXXX
I've been wating to try growing one of those packets of mixed cactus seeds! Im guessing put them in a warm place, in a sandy mix, kept damp but not moist? Bag or no bag for germination is where I get confused! I have a grow cart that has 4 levels (fits 16 flats) that I positioned over a heat vent in our house, and it has a zippered clear cover, which helps keep in humidity a bit...
Hi Keely :-D I often use the bag method but also have great success sowing seeds without the bags too, I use a sandy mix too :-D thats fantastic that you have a grow cart and with a clear cover that keeps humidity in, this is perfect for seedlings and its best to keep the soil moist and well watered but not too wet, extra heat helps to encourage faster germination too :-D thanks so much for your wonderful support and comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Thursday XXXX
Why my baby saguaro (1 month old) are all Red color?
