  • A quick update so you can see how my seedlings I sowed two videos ago are coming along. My method seems to work quite well for everything Agaves to Burseras to Cactus of various genera and species.

    Your seedlings are coming along very nicely 👍🏻 So rewarding growing these plants from seed, especially from your own plants. Love growing Astros from seed, especially asterias. They’re like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get lol. Cheers for sharing with us. Happy growing 🌵☀️🌼🏜

    I know this is an older video, but Wow, these seeds look great!!! I'm sure you know those Arios look pretty red. I'm getting ready to sow about 30 different cactus seeds so boning up on the sowing knowledge so thanks as always for your cool videos.

    Wow they have a great size to be only one month age, probably the effect of the light I suppose.

    The seedlings look good! Growing from seed has been crazy rewarding. I do ferocactus, stenocereus, echinocereus, harrisia, peniocereus, astrophytum from seed but always expanding. Love your channel if you ever roll through phoenix hit me up my friend.

    Interesting video and results. Thanks! One question regarding the coarse substrate: Aren't the seeds sliding from the surface of the substrate into the dark, lower layers and are then lost for germination? Or do you add fine substrate as well (but simply not visible)? Or does the moisture make the seeds stick to the stones/gravel?

    Hi Hunter, thanks for posting the video. If germinating in the Summer, do I need a heat mat? You're one of my favorite UA-camrs. Stay beautiful!

    Very Nice! Do you water with hydrogen peroxide or sterilized water? And do you have your heating mat sad a certain temperature? And I know you said you couldn’t remember where you got your Copiapoa Cinera seeds, but maybe you might remember where you got your albaspinas from? Thanks in advance! 😊

    How do you know when they are ready for dryer conditions? Mine are a yr old, and brown on and off so not sure why. They seems to brown in direct sunlight so have them on on a east facing window now with a dome over it.

    I havent had great success with growing from seed so i just grafted them. I cant even tell the difference between a grafted plant and non grafted. Even old degrafted lophs are almost indistinguishable to me even looking at roots (unless hard grown) lol

    When do you suggest to transition the seedlings out of their humid environment? I have a some ariocarpus and astrophytum that are a few months old now and am nervous to begin the transition.

    • @CactusQuest
      @CactusQuest  3 роки тому +9

      I have tried to keep them in there for the whole first year with varying degrees of success in some instances I have had to remove the seedlings as early as one month and some I have kept in as long as a year (with additional waterings, where I will open bag to water) transitioning the seedlings out of the super humid baggies must be done very slowly opening the bags a centimeter at a time over the course of two weeks or so. As to prevent them for getting shocked and drying to death.

    • @levihodson2414
      @levihodson2414 3 роки тому +8

      I will definitely be keeping them in there for a lot longer before risking the transition. I’m new to this cacti obsession and you’re one of a few UA-cam channels I’ve found that posts regularly so thank you for quenching my interest and sharing your experiences!

    Wouldn't it make sense to have a longer dark period because of their cam metabolism?

    • @CactusQuest
      @CactusQuest  3 роки тому +2

      I really couldn’t say. It’s just an experiment to see how they do. So far so good. But as they transition into the greenhouse they acclimate to a normal day/night schedule.

  • @deft1abc1

    How do they do it in nature then if they require so much humidity? Obviously in the desert they don't get near as much moisture.

    • @billyjack3580
      @billyjack3580 Рік тому +1

      Not too many of them make it. The few that do are generally found at the base of a rock or a tree/shrub where there’s shade and dew run-off can collect. Brief summer thundershowers can occur in areas where cactus grow, so in wetter years there will be more seedlings.
