  • Deformation of the shape of the stem or - cactus etiolation, occurs as a result of insufficient illumination of the plant for a long time.
For growing cacti indoors, this is a typical problem. Indoors, the plant is placed in the place where the person wants, while "no one asks the opinion of the cactus about this place." After some time, the cactus stem begins to stretch, regardless of the natural form, the color becomes paler. Almost certainly, you can forget about flowering.
Moreover, due to insufficient lighting, the chance of other plant diseases increases. In general, the cactus is losing its beauty.

This is so useful. Thank you for your help. Such a beautiful but misunderstood plant for lighting. It is so important to know there is a huge difference between a cactus surviving in lower light conditions and thriving when we supply as much light as humanly possible. My collection is continually expanding and I am learning more along the journey. A special thank you for the time of day for lighting care. The clarification is very helpful

I am so glad I found your channel! I haven't found as good of information as I have with your videos! Thank you! I bought a Mammillaria cactus about 3 years ago I think at Lowes. I only know it's Mammillaria now because of your videos. My cactus is now 10 inches tall, which I thought was a good, cool thing. 😅 I was impressed with the growth but now know it's not supposed to be a tall cactus. It was on the shorter side for about 1.5 years when it was placed in a window. We moved and I didn't have a window to place it where my cats can't get to (they would knock it down). So, I bought grow lights and put the cactus on a shelf with grow lights and that's when a lot of etiolation occurred. I have a few questions and hope you will see them and help.
    1. Are grow lights ever good enough for cactus plants?
    2. Will my Mammillaria cactus be okay if I begin giving it the right light? I know it won't shrink down but will it be a healthy plant even at 10 inches tall?
    3. If I do decide to propagate it, I should probably wait until spring, right?
    4. I will watch this video again and others, but if I do cut it down, can the top part that gets cut off grow new roots, too?
    5. Since my plant is 10 inches long, where should I cut it? 2 inches above the soil, 3 inches? Could I cut the top into multiple parts and propagate them?
Sorry for all the questions and thank you again for the videos. 😊

Does indoor lighting always do this no matter the intensity?
