Unboxing Wisconsin: What It's Like Living In Wisconsin

  • Does everyone in Wisconsin hate people from Illinois?
Does everyone in Wisconsin eat cheese with every meal?
Is southern Wisconsin changing this state’s culture?
We’ll talk about that stuff and much, much more. So grab a beer, a brat and some cheese whiz. We’re gonna unbox the state of Wisconsin!
Aww. Look at this. It's a cow. On a dairy farm. Wisconsin is a big dairy state, and dairy is a big part of this state’s culture. Throughout most of Wisconsin you’ll find farmland like this. After all, Wisconsin IS the second leading producer of dairy products. But Wisconsin is a lot more than dairy farms. You might know Wisconsin as a state of farmland, dive bars and terrible Milwaukee neighborhoods. Sure, there’s a lot of that, and we’ll get to that in a little bit. But to REALLY get to know Wisconsin, you need to look at this state from afar and visit each of this state’s unique regions. Then, you’ll truly know what Wisconsin is all about, and you’ll be able to figure out what part of Wisconsin is best for YOU.
This is Wisconsin. It’s a big state, and as you can see, there’s all sorts of stuff to explore. It just depends on where you want to go. We’re gonna start way up here in the northwest part of the state and kinda work our way around a bit.

I’m born and raised in Madison. The best part to live is West Madison or the suburban towns like Middleton (far west) or Sun Prairie (Far East) There has been an uptick of crime in the city but most instances are people with beefs targeting each other.
For whatever reason east Madison has experienced some urban blight over the last 5 years which attracts more undesirable and homeless people. There is a large park that has been taken over as a small tent city by the homeless. The undesirable and homeless people are actually very friendly people that mind their own business, mostly because the social services in Madison is second to none and the help people with food and other needs.
There is early planning to redevelop the blighted areas on the East side. The Madison government is very keen on keeping our city look pristine, unlike Other cities that are just let their towns completely fall apart. Example: The near east side was completely redeveloped with new hi rises, a music venue, bars and restaurants, a new minor league soccer team. there is new development going on as I write this and it’s inching closer to the Far East side.

The Milwaukee Art Museum, Riverwalk, Door County, Oconomowoc, Cedarburg, Student Union at UW Madison, up north, Fox Cities, Summerfest, Port Washington, Dells, cheese curds, beer cheese soup, snowmobiling, ice fishing, boating, brew pubs, supper clubs (with relish tray), biking trails, Holy Hill, Kettle Moraine, thousands of lakes, brats (met Mr. and Mrs. Stayer who founded Johnsonville Brats....nice down to earth folks), hundreds of lovely safe communities, national forests, and many beautiful miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. I am seriously considering retiring in Wisconsin. Then, I won't be a FIB but a proud resident of a great state.

Edit: Nick, you did an amazing job on this video! And also, kudos for the Waukesha pronunciation.
    A few quick things:
    1. Supper clubs are life in Wisconsin. The further north you go, the more prevalent they become. They aren't as popular with the younger crowds but still are pretty much life for Wisconsin folk. This is the same for people having cabins. It's not hard to find someone with a cabin up north, haha!
    2. Don't move your family to West Allis (a lot of division), Racine (crime), or Neenah (creepy cult-like town). You'll thank me later. BUT these three do have some gems to make time for a quick visit.
    3. Illinois people, thank you for appreciating our state but PLEASE stop moving here and trying to make our government like your garbage government. You like Wisconsin for a reason. Let's leave it that way. Thanks.

Janesville is making a comeback after GM went under. Unfortunately, most of the crime is coming from people getting pushed out of Chicago. Madison used to be my favorite city, but that has become trashy and rampant with crime. Much more homeless than there used to be also. Liberal Madison is eating itself alive. Dude I relocated there for 6 months(took a job at Kohls corp) Dec08-June 09 and Milwaukee is totally segregated. I am from SoCal born and raised. I am hispanic and my sister and I went to a Walmart is Milwaukee and we were totally stared down, it took us a while to realize everyone was black and giving us the stink eye, we left and shopped at a Target in West Allis. Also my co-workers (corp office) told me to look at this neighborhood in Milwaukee and when I finally checked it out it was all Mexicans! Like Mexican(from Mexico) - I don't even speak Spanish. I liked Wauwatosa I had a 2br upper duplex for $780/month. When I can back to LA I got a loft for $1300 and appreciated the diversity I grew up being so use too especially in the hispanic community.

I'm so sorry you had to experience that!! West Allis is one of the worst places for segregation. I grew up in Racine. My elementary school was incredibly diverse for being where it was. We had full classrooms of kids who speak Spanish teach us the language every year. I miss that because I don't think other schools in WI had that. Southern California is beautiful. Miss it out there too.

I've heard numerous times that Milwaukee is the most segregated city in the nation. Drive down a residential street and it's beautiful mansions, then there is a cyclone fence and you're in the ghetto, then a few blocks later another fence and middle class homes.

Hate to say it, but it's not that stunning compared to most states. Well depends what you're into I suppose. Much of the state is flat, mind you there are rolling hills scattered throughout. The southern part of the state is farmland. The northern part is forested. There is however a lot of rivers and lakes. We gotta be in the top 5 states with bridges, as there has to be at least one every mile of road. Lake Winnebago is huge, and you can stand in the middle of it, 5 miles from any shore thanks to sand bars.

I miss living in my home state, & hope to return to live there for the rest of my life. I miss butter burgers, fresh meats, basements, (I am currently in Texas. No basements), & the blessed season changes. Snowbirds come down here to escape the winters. Believe me, after no real snow for over 30 years, I miss it. I would love to have a real white Christmas again. And I long to go on the Marian tour in Wisconsin, & of course, go to a Packers game, live! Go Pack Go!!!

    1. Milwaukee is paradise from June through September. You don't need a coat in September.
    2. There are some pretty high escarpments, bluffs, and hills in Wisconsin, but no true mountains. Rib Mountain in Wausau is the closest we have to a mountain.
    3. Milwaukee is a coastal city, a river city and a pro sports city. That's a great combination.

One of my road trip goals is to visit the Apostle Islands in Bayfield (northern - Lake Superior). The French Indians own a large part of that territory there and don’t like the independent ship companies. We mainly go to lake Geneva to Madison. Snake Road and the other rustic roads are stunning especially in the autumn. The lakes are very beautiful
