Be careful when removing the shaft. If the steering wheel spins freely you could damage the airbag clock spring. I have used a bungee from the steering wheel to the brake pedal. This will keep it from spinning freely and will also keep the it aligned properly for reinstallment.

Thanks for mentioning that. I forgot to mention that in the video. I wrapped the seat belt thru the wheel and buckled it which works as well in holding the wheel in place.

I am having the exact same problem with my 2020 GMC 2500 Denali. Started expierencing the grinding @ about 4,000 miles. Took to to the Dealer and they diagnosed and replaced the steering gear only to find out that the problem was still there. took it back to the Dealer shortly after and they replaced the intermediate shaft. That worked for for bout another 4,000 miles. Dealer says "GM field engineer is aware of the problem" and stated that as of today March 20th 2021 there is still currently "no fix". Absolutely ridiculous!!! I had a 2016 GMC 2500 Denali and never had any steering issues whatsoever. Over 90k miles and no problems. Thank you for the education on this issue. Good luck to you!

My 2022 Denali 2500 just started with the clunking in the steering wheel at 9800 miles. I’ll fix it myself, not wasting my time at the dealer, unless it’s a bigger more costly repair. I still love this truck.

2020 Sierra 1500 - similar issues with intermediate shaft boot. 1st time they repacked, 2nd time they repacked again but this time advised GM is working with the parts supplier on a fix and they added a note to my VIN for this special part once it becomes available. no time frame given.

This is the same problem GM has had since 04 still refuses to admit there is an issue. There used to be a Bearing Ethie bottom of the steering column that I had to replace on my o5 that took care of the problem. This was after 5 intermediate shaft replacements through the dealership

GM has had over 20 years to fix this problem so I would not be counting on a solution from them anytime soon. My new 2022 AT4 is my 7th truck since '02 and I've had to replace that part on every truck, and more than once. Never got more than 20k miles out of them before this issue would start. To this day the dealer will tell you they've never heard of this problem. It's so damn annoying! When they would finally acknowledge there's an issue, all they would do was pump the shaft back and forth to redistribute the grease. That fixed the problem for about a month at the most. So I got tired of dealing with the dealership. Dorman and Borgeson made a good aftermarket shaft for previous models but they have yet to make anything for the 2020 and up. With 33k on my newer '22, all I can do is keep filling it with grease until one of the aftermarket parts come available. 😡

2020 Silverado 2500. Noticed the “clicking” from the steering wheel at about 12000 miles. First visit to Chevy dealer (Jan 2021) replaced intermediate shaft - didn’t correct issue. 2nd visit about a week later - no fix at this time, but GM working on a new part. Feb 2022Just got the new part installed by dealer, which I’m assuming is a re-worked shaft. Didn’t fix the issue…maybe a little quieter?? Will be going back to dealer to at least document that new fix isn’t working while still under warranty.

2021 GMC 2500 Denali HD 6700 miles, same thing, although I dont really feel it in the steering wheel. Dealer repalced Intermediate shaft per "DOC#PIT5809A MAY APPLY" , although they weren't really sure it would fix the problem as it was too intermediate to determine the location and wanted to keep it overnight to test cold in the morning. Told them I'd do the testing (I needed my truck back for towing). It seems better, but still heard it, 2 miles from the dealership. Will be back if this becomes worse again.

Yup, I have heard the same thing.
Buddy of mine knows a mechanic and he said they are different.
But Laura Buick put the same one back in my truck.
I don’t think Laura knows about it yet.

My 2020 has the same clunking noise on the steering wheel when i drive down a dirt or bumpy road. Wtf

Have you noticed the inch play in the steering wheel.
Or how it wanders down the road.
Getting them to fix something is like pulling fingernails.
I’m test driving the 1500 duramax when it comes in.
I should make them give me all my money back

I got a 2020 Sierra 2500HD DENALI and I got the same slop from day one. And now my ac is actin up. Bout to take it in.. no way a 100k truck should be this shitty. My Yukon DENALI was great. I don't want to lemon this truck because then I'll be out of a truck but damn it's driving me mad

My 2020 2500 gmc was awful! I had the same issue. Plus horrible wind noise. Starting at 50 mph. Gm never fixed any of it. I finally dumped the piece of shit. My dealer was pretty good on a trade. I have a 2021 2500 Chevrolet. Seems to be a lot better.

Sad when you gotta work in a new 70k truck. The trucks these days are junk

$80,000 truck, I should of just got a canyon 😏.
Could it really be that dodge is better?
I would buy a Toyota Tacoma before I buy another dodge. I’m sorry they are junk. My last one everything was bad at 50k miles.
Tires were cupping, ball joints, Tie rod ends, -
List to long to put on here.

      I thought about getting a Ford F-150.
If you want the gmc you could look up the Lemon law.
I’m pretty sure they have to buy the truck back if problem is not resolved within like five times

@EFEX3 KANPOL ya I’m getting out. Trading it in on a tundra before they update that.
I drove one and it reminded me of the old crown Vick.
I’m a gm guy but not any more.
If this don’t work out I may try a ford.
If that don’t work I’m going back to a 2000 Toyota Corolla. Not kidding.
      Go from a 80,000 truck to a 4,000 car.
Cheeper all the way around lol

@EFEX3 KANPOL I don’t think gm is going to build anything better any time soon bc people are still in line to get one.
Maybe in 3 or 4 years they will get the hint
