Apple recently released their much anticipated second generation iPhone SE and so far its definitely lived up to the hype. The budget device’s starting price is just $400 but has features like wireless charging, a True Tone display, stereo recording, and portrait mode. Features that, just a couple years ago, were only available on flagship iPhone models. But the new SE doesn’t only have features from older iPhones, it also shares the same A13 Bionic chipset as the current flagship iPhone 11 Pro which sells for $1,000. And the reason why that’s so important is because budget smartphones almost always compromise on graphics and processing performance since they typically have cheaper, slower chipsets. But that’s changed with the iPhone SE, and it’s not only causing a huge disruption in the smartphone industry, but it’s also leading people to wonder why Apple would even create this device in the first place. Why, after increasing the flagship iPhone’s starting price from 650 to $1,000 over four years, would they then introduce a $400 iPhone that performs just as well as the $1,000 model? At first glance it may appear counterintuitive, but the iPhone SE is likely the last phase of a clever business strategy Apple has been working on for years. People are saying Apple is running out of ideas, but when you look at the competition, they are all copying Apple. Even Android 10 has iOS gestures and animations.

another reason is because by doing this, more people can buy a new iphone and enter the apple ecosystem. by buying an iPhone (this applies to most people but not everyone), majority of people will also join one or more of apple's additional streaming services (apple music, apple tv, etc) and with that comes a monthly fee, which ensures money in their pockets every month even if you don't buy a new product. their services are becoming exceedingly popular especially since they have family plans and more ways to save money as well as the malware to make everything more effortless.

It still functions well and when it becomes obsolete I can’t wait to get the SE 2020, probably second hand.

ricky v Buying it used, pre-owned. Apple products have a reputation for durability and long life so if a person takes care of it, Apple Care isn’t necessary especially if it breaks while the first owner used it.
TheWarrrenator Me too, My original SE has 80% maximum capacity on battery... So when it is a little cold outside it dies RAPIDLY. And for me who lives in the Northern Norway, cold 70% of the year. This phone has lasted me 4 good years, but Im thinking of buying the new SE but am worried about the low battery life on it and larger screen..
I think there is plenty of Apple customers that aren’t tech obsessed but still enjoy the Apple echo system ! For example my mother ( now in her late 50s ) she had an iPhone 5s all this time until today when she picked up a SE. Not because she couldn’t afford an other iPhone but just because the 5s was doing a fine job and she enjoyed that it was very compact

You didn’t mention talk about that the iPhone 8 was released as budget alternative alongside the iPhone X.
iPhone 8 came a few months before with the iPhone X being a limited time product

iPhone 8 was not meant to be the budget. It was just the base model whereas X was meant to offer the top of the line at that time. It was a radical change in Apple's design and features. For the more price-conscious individual, Apple sells older iPhones for discounted prices. I think they still had the first SE in their store. Apple finally discounted selling the iPhone 8 on April 15 to make room for the SE 2020.
The 8/8 plus were never meant to be budget phones.

Like it or not the iPhone SE 2 to really cut into the competitors and after switching to an SE 2 after breaking my 11 promax I could say I have not lost any performance only screen size since the first SE in 2016 I really wasn’t expecting apple to make another iPhone SE and this one is the most powerful little phone ever hands-down

Greg, I wasn’t to hip on the new format till about 1/2 way into the video. Good work on this one and you hit on why I was thinking this came out. It’s a phenomenal gateway for those that want to enter Apple’s ecosystem and a bargain for those of us already in it.

wow. This really is me. Bought the SE to try the apple platform, fast forward a few months later and I'm screaming I'm never going back to android.
I’ve been an IPhone user on and off over the years. In recent years I’ve been using the Sony Xperia and loved it. However, when I found out the Apple was releasing a budget friendly iphone I needed to seriously think about switching back. Yesterday I switched to the SE 2 and love it. It’s smaller than my Xperia (the entire iphone fits in the screen) but now I can sync up my phone with my iPad Pro. Good job Apple for sucking me in. Great video!

Maître Manta Apple’s best a single core performance relevant to a lot of things like gaming. But it’s finally gotten to the point where the Snapdragon 865 out performs the lastesr chipset, the A13, in things like multicore performance.

Very interesting perspective on it. I'm exactly that, an Android user who never could afford an iPhone and never tried. I also don't buy used phones so the SE 2020 is really the perfect opportunity for me. Also fed up with the constant android updates (and the time it takes to install them), one of which corrupted many of my photos.

10:54 yup that's me. Ditched Android after being with it for 8 years. What sold me on the SE 2.0 was obviously the price/performance ratio, and the fact that Apple supports their devices far longer than most Android devices. I mean, it really sucks paying top-dollar (or near top-dollar in my case) for an Android phone that doesn't get any OS or security updates after 2, maybe 3 years is just foolish when the device is still otherwise perfectly functional
I just got an SE. I like it and plan to keep it for some time but also feel like I would rather have gotten a gesture based model when i see how fast the gestures seem. I think Apple are a very clever business. Yes this launch of the SE seems unusual and good but I feel they are cleverly going to make the SE feel outdated mentally that most of us wouldn't keep the phone for 3 years+, just from looking at rumours of future models. Also with 5G rolling out as well.
I think they use to be more focused on innovation and design, but now they have became really smart when it comes to making money. Probably so smart that it isn't obvious.

Some of these cheaper phone manufacturers had to raise costs also partly due to losses they had accumulated due to maintaining a low price point. They had to do this to increase their margins so that they could focus more on software optimization and fix other problems with their earlier handsets. However, I do still agree with Greg that manufacturers have felt authorized/forced to raise prices on their handsets. Great video. :)

Another reason that is not usually thought of is that a smaller phone is actually better for Voiceover users such as myself. Since I have to hold the phone in several ways and do so many different gestures, I don't think a larger screen makes a lot of sense for me to use. Also, I carry my phone everywhere.
But I loved learning about Apple's strategy!

Well done! I have a iPhone 6 and thinking about going to the SE. I like the size of the 6 and the SE is about the same size. The specs of the SE are pretty impressive for the price. Subscribed.
I did that a week ago,
Change from iPhone 6 16GB to SE 128GB and the performance difference is just unbelievable. 6 worked OK in apps but switching between was quite laggy. Had to be patient. Now everything happens in a blink of an eye.
Fun Fact: the new SE is actually the iPhone 9 that we never received 😌

I upgraded from the previous SE to the new one, what I think it’s great about the new SE is that foxxcon is manufacturing here in Brazil, so the products come with a tag written “Brazilian nacional industry “ what is also cool is that I can have a modern iPhone with the previous design, the iPhone X design feels really big in my hands, so if I want to Watch a video I use my iPad

Because there's a huge market to tap in the smaller sized phone market segment.
Because minimal R&D and minimal impact on supply chain & production change when transitioning from iP8, thus saving bucket loads in introducing new product line. Same idea as previous SE version, and a money winner at that!
I've only had iPhone smart phones and bought an SE 2020. My last phone was a 7 and it only had 32 gb of memory. Now I have 128 gb. And since I traded in my 7 for $120, that SE only wound up costing me $329. It was a no-brainer for me. And now I'm back up to 100 percent battery life again. I was down to 86 percent on my 7. Definitely a no-brainer.

That’s probably true. At the turn of the year, a record number of CEOs had voluntarily quit their positions, and bear in mind this was before Coronavirus. Tim Cook ofc held onto his position but also sensed the 10 year continuous stock market climb would sooner than later come to an end so a new strategy was needed. Looks like it might just pay off.

The pixel is somehow popular in the US but in Italy I’ve never seen a pixel in the hand of someone, even stores don’t sell them, you have to buy it online. I don’t know if in other countries in Europe it’s the same.
lol the pixel is "the phone of the myth". in my country i have never seen anyone actually using a pixel in real life. just see them on youtube's review.
I believe the focus into services is more important than undercutting rivals. Since they stopped reporting iPhone sales numbers, undercutting rivals is less important, though not useless. And given their expansion into services such as credit cards, TV shows and active gaming management, getting their customers hooked on the ecosystem to drive services sales is more important
